Control transfers and loops in constant evaluation [GH #401, GH #402, GH #403, GH #404, GH #411] - #419
This reorganizes how the constant-expression interpreter handles control transfers and loops, and fixes five bugs that are hard to fix in the current structure.
Control transfers. Previously, break, continue, and return were tracked by four flags in the call frame (return_active, loop_break_active, continue_active, switch_break_active), checked at various points of the recursive statement interpreter. They are replaced by a single pending control transfer in the interpreter state (an_interpreter_state::transfer, of kind ctk_loop_break, ctk_switch_break, ctk_continue, or ctk_return). While a transfer is pending, the work items between its origin and its target are visited only to perform their cleanup (restoring storage stacks, running destructors, popping call frames), and the target completes the transfer. Because the transfer propagates through all work items, including those of expressions, a break or continue inside a GNU statement expression now exits the enclosing full-expression and loop (#401). The enumeration also has a ctk_throw kind, which is not used yet; it is intended for exceptions in constant evaluation (P3068R6, #368), which build on this.
Switch entry and loops as work items. The entry of a switch statement at a case label is now done by entering the statements that enclose the label (without running their initial parts) until the label is reached (an_interpreter_state::switch_entry), and for-, while-, and range-based for-statements are interpreted as work items instead of by recursive routines. As a result, variables declared before the case label (after an earlier label, or without initializer in the init-statement of an enclosing if- or for-statement) are allocated when their scope is entered and are accessible after the jump (#402), and a for loop entered through a case label is continued after its body completes even when the loop is followed by other statements (#411).
Lifetimes. A condition variable (and a variable of the init-statement of an if- or switch-statement) is now destroyed when the statement completes or, for a while- or for-statement, at the end of each iteration, instead of right after the condition was evaluated (#403). Similarly, the variable of a range-based for-statement is destroyed at the end of each iteration (#404).
Tests:
New changes/gh-401.sft.cpp through changes/gh-404.sft.cpp, and changes/gh-411.sft.cpp.
Updated expectations for imported/clang/cpp/SemaCXX/constant-expression-cxx14.sft.cpp and constant-expression-cxx2a.sft.cpp: errors that were incorrectly issued (for the switch-entry cases and for check_abnormal_termination) are gone. The edg_x86_32 and edg_x86_32_cp recordings of these tests (which differ from the 64-bit ones only in a few target-specific values) were updated by applying the same changes, since those configurations were not run.
New regressions/constexpr-control-flow.sft.cpp, a broader test of loops, switch statements (including Duff's device and case labels in nested loops), early returns, and destruction order for constant evaluation.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved C++20 constant evaluation of break, continue, and return in statement expressions.
Fixed variable access and loop-condition reevaluation when switch cases transfer control into nested scopes or loops.
Corrected the lifetime and destruction timing of condition and init-statement variables, and range-based loop variables, during constant evaluation.
Tests
Added regression coverage for control transfers, switch-case entry, variable lifetimes, and destruction in constant expressions.
The constexpr interpreter now propagates control transfers separately from failures and performs cleanup while unwinding. Resumable loop and switch handling addresses switch case entry and variable lifetimes. Added regression tests, updated expected output, and release notes cover these changes.

Summary
Transfer state and cleanup src/interpret.c
The interpreter tracks pending breaks, continues, returns, and throws separately from failures. Work execution and storage restoration propagate transfers while running applicable destructions. Routine boundaries consume returns.
Resumable loop and switch execution src/interpret.c
Loop and switch interpretation schedules tests, increments, bodies, case selection, and cleanup across resumable work. Switch entry locates the selected case within supported nested statements.
Regression coverage and release notes src/pending_changes/gh-*.txt, tests/tests/changes/*, tests/tests/imported/clang/cpp/SemaCXX/*constant-expression*, tests/tests/regressions/*
Compile-time tests cover statement-expression transfers, switch entry, loop continuation, and variable destruction. Updated expected output removes diagnostics for constant-evaluation cases that now pass. Release notes describe the reported cases.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 3dfc9
This change fixes several constant-evaluation control-flow bugs. Two narrow gaps remain: a for (int i; ...) init declaration without an initializer may not be usable in constant evaluation, and a break or continue inside a __builtin_constant_p operand in GNU mode can wrongly skip the enclosing statement. Both affect uncommon constructs, but they should be fixed or knowingly accepted before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3dfc9
The change remains within constant evaluation and does not introduce a new external interface or privilege boundary. One failure-containment concern remains: speculative evaluation can leave control state that affects the enclosing computation. No security exploit was established.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Speculative __builtin_constant_p evaluation does not contain the new shared control-transfer state. With GNU statement expressions inside an enclosing evaluated function, a break or continue from the argument can remain pending after the builtin produces its false-result fallback, causing enclosing work to unwind. Previously, these flags belonged to the statement-expression frame that was popped. This is an inferred failure-containment regression; privilege escalation, memory corruption, and a concrete security exploit were not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is to enclosing constant-evaluation control flow when supplied source uses GNU statement expressions and the builtin's speculative path. The investigation did not establish cross-process, tenant, credential, or deployment exposure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The builtin disables ordinary side effects and suppresses speculative diagnostics, then restores both flags. It does not similarly restore or consume a transfer produced by that speculative evaluation. The side-effect flag therefore does not itself establish control-state isolation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Failure-only recovery is no longer sufficient for callers of nested evaluation: an unsuccessful result can now carry a live control transfer. Recovery boundaries must distinguish that outcome from unrecoverable failure to preserve containment.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the two themes of the change: control transfers (break, continue, return) and loops in constant evaluation. The raw summary confirms the interpreter now uses a shared pending-transfer state and reorganized loop helpers. The linked issues (#401 to #404, #411) match these themes. The title is long at 96 characters, and it lists five issue numbers, but it is accurate and specific.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR meets the coding requirements of all five active direct issues.
[#401] src/interpret.c replaces call-frame transfer flags with an_interpreter_state::transfer and propagates transfers through expression work items. tests/tests/changes/gh-401.sft.cpp checks GNU-mode break, continue, return, destructor cleanup, and pointer cleanup inside statement expressions.
[#402] an_interpreter_state::switch_entry enters enclosing scopes up to the case label. The new gh-402 tests cover declarations in switch bodies and enclosing for and if init-statements.
[#403] The new work-item state preserves condition-variable storage through the required substatement and loop increment, then restores it at statement or iteration completion. gh-403 tests the required if, switch, while, and for cases.
[#404] Range-based for iteration state now tracks per-iteration storage and cleanup. gh-404.sft.cpp checks destruction for normal iteration, break, continue, and reference iteration.
[#411] Loop statements are work items, and switch entry records the target case. gh-411.sft.cpp checks for, nested for, while, and do loops entered through case labels, including statements after the loop.
The updated imported test expectations and the new constexpr regression test provide additional automated coverage. The reviewed evidence does not include a test execution log, but the test sources and interpreter diff support compliance.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within the linked constant-evaluation control-flow scope. The src/interpret.c refactor implements transfer propagation, scope entry, loop continuation, and destruction timing required by [#401], [#402], [#403], [#404], and [#411]. The new issue tests, the constexpr control-flow regression test, and updated imported expectations verify those behaviors. The ctk_throw kind is unused and adds no exception behavior; it is part of the shared transfer representation described by the control-flow refactor. The pending change notes document the same five fixes. No unrelated functional change is shown.

The cleanup releases variant paths of pointer locals that may not be initialized.
vars_initialized is a block-wide guess. It does not track the state of each variable. Two reachable states break it:
A transfer exits the block before a pointer local gets a value. This case is new with the GNU statement-expression transfers that this change adds. An example is int *p = ({ if (c) break; &x; }); inside a loop:
stmk_init allocates p through do_constexpr_alloc_variable.
do_constexpr_init_variable returns FALSE with ctk_loop_break pending, so p is never marked initialized.
The block cleanup sees !ips->failed && ips->transfer.kind != ctk_throw and calls release_variant_path_if_needed(var_bytes) on storage that holds stale bytes. A C++20 int *p; if (c) break; p = &x; follows the same path.
The block fails during its own iwp_start visit. Examples are a failing do_constexpr_alloc_variable for a large initk_none array, a failure in init_static_variables, or the switch-entry diagnostic. In these cases, result is FALSE but ips->failed is still FALSE, because end_work_visit sets it only later. The condition then evaluates to TRUE, and the initk_none pointer locals that were already allocated hold stale bytes.
In release builds, alloc_complete_object does not scramble the data bytes, so the storage-stack bytes come from earlier allocations. Those bytes can contain an a_constexpr_address with CA_VARIANT_PATH set. release_variant_path then puts entries that were already released back on free_variant_path_entries. That can create a cycle or a double free in the free list.
The fix is to check each variable. Pointer variables are marked through mark_complete_object_initialized when they get a value, either by do_constexpr_init_variable or by the first eok_assign. do_constexpr_condition_cleanup already uses this check. A separate issue exists before this change: for a variable that this block did not allocate, get_stack_bytes can return the storage of an outer recursive activation. The postfix alloc_seq_number check in do_constexpr_unmap_variable would also exclude that case.

Allocate declaration-only for init variables on the normal path.
At src/interpret.c:9595-9628, the normal path pushes a stmk_decl initialization to process_stmt_work, whose stmk_decl handler does not allocate variables. The switch-entry path already allocates those entities. A declaration-only init such as for (int i; ...) can therefore leave i unmapped on the normal path.

Clear a transfer left pending by the speculative __builtin_constant_p operand.
This code is unchanged, but the new transfer model makes it reachable. The operand is evaluated speculatively. If that evaluation fails, the builtin returns 0 and interpretation continues. Before this change, every failure ended the operand evaluation and nothing leaked out. Now run_pushed_work can return FALSE with ips->transfer still pending.
How it can be triggered in GNU modes: a statement expression inside the operand reaches a break or continue, as in r = __builtin_constant_p(({ if (c) break; 1; })); inside a loop.
What happens next:
The builtin sets the result to zero_int and returns TRUE.
process_call_work ends with result TRUE.
The pending transfer is still set. run_pushed_work then pops the enclosing work items that do not need cleanup without running them.
As a result, the assignment to r is dropped and the loop is exited.
GCC does not evaluate this operand at run time, so no branch should take effect. The same pattern exists in do_assumption_check, which also recovers from a failed evaluation.
The fix is to discard any transfer after the failed speculative evaluation.

Fixes #403.
Fixes #404.
Fixes #411.
This reorganizes how the constant-expression interpreter handles control transfers and loops, and fixes five bugs that are hard to fix in the current structure.
Control transfers. Previously,
break, continue, andreturnwere tracked by four flags in the call frame (return_active,loop_break_active,continue_active,switch_break_active), checked at various points of the recursive statement interpreter. They are replaced by a single pending control transfer in the interpreter state (an_interpreter_state::transfer, of kindctk_loop_break,ctk_switch_break,ctk_continue, orctk_return). While a transfer is pending, the work items between its origin and its target are visited only to perform their cleanup (restoring storage stacks, running destructors, popping call frames), and the target completes the transfer. Because the transfer propagates through all work items, including those of expressions, abreakorcontinueinside a GNU statement expression now exits the enclosing full-expression and loop (#401). The enumeration also has actk_throwkind, which is not used yet; it is intended for exceptions in constant evaluation (P3068R6, #368), which build on this.Switch entry and loops as work items. The entry of a switch statement at a case label is now done by entering the statements that enclose the label (without running their initial parts) until the label is reached (
an_interpreter_state::switch_entry), and for-, while-, and range-based for-statements are interpreted as work items instead of by recursive routines. As a result, variables declared before the case label (after an earlier label, or without initializer in the init-statement of an enclosing if- or for-statement) are allocated when their scope is entered and are accessible after the jump (#402), and a for loop entered through a case label is continued after its body completes even when the loop is followed by other statements (#411).Lifetimes.
