Motivation

  • The installer used apt-get -qq widely which suppressed useful failure diagnostics and made network/package issues hard to debug.
  • Preserve a quiet user experience for successful installs while exposing actionable apt output when an apt operation fails.

Description

  • Added run_apt_with_error_context which runs apt-get into a temp log and prints the last 40 lines if the command fails.
  • Introduced wrappers apt_update_quiet, apt_install_quiet, and apt_upgrade_quiet that call the helper and keep successful runs quiet.
  • Replaced direct apt-get calls in ensure_system_up_to_date, install_docker_apt, install_docker_compose_plugin_apt, and check_dependencies with the new wrappers to surface failures without noisy success output.
  • No other behavioral or security changes were made; this is diagnostic/operational hardening only.

Testing

  • Ran a syntax check with bash -n install.sh which succeeded (no syntax errors).
