fix(channels): ask before the Local only button turns the switch on, and cancel on "no" - #480
Follow-up to #451 (#446). Two gaps in sentient/channels/base.py:
Tapping "Local only" in the /model list applied the preset without asking and left the Local only switch off. _preset_button now asks the same question as /model Local only when Local only is off: the button message settles to "Turn on Local only too?" and the chat gets the question. Answering /model Local only yes switches both, as before.
/model Local only no replied "I don't have a model setup called 'Local only no'". The command now treats a trailing yes or no as the answer, and no replies "Okay, I left your models as they are." without changing anything.
The check and the question are shared by the command and the button (_asks_local_only, _local_only_question), and the question now mentions both answers: "Reply /model Local only yes or /model Local only no". Who can answer is unchanged: in a group only the chat's owner can press the button.
pytest tests/channels/test_model_command.py: 10 passed. New tests:
test_local_only_button_asks_before_turning_the_switch_on: tapping the button gives the "Turn on Local only too?" toast and edit, sends the question, changes nothing, and /model Local only yes then switches both.
test_local_only_no_cancels: /model Local only no after the question leaves the models and the switch as they were.
test_model_lists_presets_and_a_button_applies_one now turns Local only on before tapping, so it still covers a button applying a preset directly.
Without the change in base.py, the two new tests fail.
pytest tests/channels: 154 passed, 1 skipped, 2 failed. The 2 failures are the voice-note tests (test_telegram.py::test_voice_note_is_transcribed_and_answered, test_whatsapp.py::test_voice_note_in_and_voice_note_out); they fail the same way on main in my environment, which lacks the voice extras.
ruff check sentient tests: clean.
Real test
Setup: the fake Telegram API used in tests/channels, as the issue asks for. No model involved: the /model command and its buttons are answered by the channel code, never by a model.
What I could not test: a real Telegram or Discord chat, since I don't have a bot set up for them.

New Features
Selecting “Local only” in Telegram or Discord now asks for confirmation before enabling it.
Replying /model Local only yes confirms the selection and enables Local only.
Replying /model Local only no cancels the change and preserves the current settings.
Model presets can be selected by their position in the available list or by their exact name, regardless of capitalization.
Bug Fixes
Declining the Local only selection no longer reports that setup is missing.

Selecting an available Local-only preset from the model command or preset button now prompts for confirmation when Local-only is disabled. The command accepts “yes” to apply the preset and enable Local-only, or “no” to cancel without changing model settings.

Summary
Command confirmation and cancellation sentient/channels/base.py, tests/channels/test_model_command.py, changes/457.fixed.md
The model command resolves complete preset names before interpreting a trailing “yes” or “no” as a response. A “no” response leaves model settings unchanged. Tests cover cancellation and names ending in “yes” or “no”; the changelog describes the updated behavior.
The preset button prompts before applying a Local-only preset when Local-only is disabled. Tests cover confirmation and selection when Local-only is already enabled.
No code risk blocks merging. The CLA check still reports missing signatures.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 97387
The change adds confirmation before a privacy setting changes and makes declining leave settings untouched. No new security exposure was identified in the reviewed paths.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — Preset application changes application-wide model configuration and can enable the application-wide Local-only flag, rather than changing only the initiating conversation. This scope predates the PR.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Non-owner group messages are rejected before command dispatch, and button handling independently checks the group owner before preset dispatch. These controls are unchanged. Affirmative Local-only application retains the all-local-role guard; the changed paths introduce no additional caller category.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The inherited application workflow is not fully transactional across in-memory configuration, undo metadata and disk persistence. Per-chat locking also does not serialize application-wide changes from different chats. These limitations predate the PR; prompting and cancellation add no configuration writes, and the affirmative path reuses existing mutation authority.

Thanks @bernalalexis-try, and welcome! Nice quick turnaround on #457. We test every change end to end before merging, so I'm running this against a real engine with a test Telegram setup now and will follow up with a review.

Hi @bernalalexis-try, welcome to Sentient, and thank you for picking up #457 so quickly! Reusing #451's question for both the command and the button is exactly right, and the tests read really well. I ran it on a real engine with a test Telegram setup:
tapping Local only now asks;
/model Local only no leaves everything as it was;
/model Local only yes turns on both the setup and the switch;
in a group, only the person who paired it can do any of this.
Two small things before we can merge:
A setup name ending in "no". CodeRabbit's note on lines ~1083-1085 is right: a saved setup whose name ends in "no" (or "yes") can't be picked by typing any more. For example, /model Just say no replies "I don't have a model setup called 'Just say'". Could you look for an exact match on the full text first, and only treat a trailing yes/no as the answer when nothing matches? Plus a quick test.
The CLA check is waiting on you: just post a comment with "I have read the CLA Document and I hereby sign the CLA".
Tiny optional nit: /model Cloud no replies "Okay, I left your models as they are." even when nothing was asked.
…and cancel on "no"
Tapping "Local only" in the /model list applied the preset without asking
and left the Local only switch off. It now asks the same question as
"/model Local only". "/model Local only no" answers that question by
leaving the models as they are, instead of looking for a setup called
"Local only no".
Closesexistence-master#457
Hi @bernalalexis-try, I think the latest push may not have included your changes. The code is the same as before; only the commit's email changed. Two things are still open:
Typing a setup whose name ends in "no" or "yes" still doesn't work:/model Just say no replies "I don't have a model setup called 'Just say'", and with "Work" and "Work yes" both saved, /model Work yes picks "Work". Please check for an exact match on the whole text first, and only read a trailing yes/no as the answer when nothing matches, plus a test.
The CLA check needs a comment from you on this PR: "I have read the CLA Document and I hereby sign the CLA". Changing the commit email doesn't sign it.
@bernalalexis-try, checking in. Are you still planning to work on this? Two things are needed before it can merge: the review's change, and the CLA (the CLA bot's comment above has the one line to post). We'll handle merging main and any other chores. If we don't hear back in a week, we'll close this with thanks and reopen #457 for someone else.
Hi @bernalalexis-try, I merged the latest main into your branch so it's up to date: merge commit a711db4c (no conflicts, your change is untouched). After the merge, ruff check sentient tests packaging is clean and the 162 tests in tests/channels pass locally. You don't need to do anything for this; any earlier review points still stand where they are.
Thanks for the re-test and for merging main. Pushed the fix (dca421e): /model now looks for an exact match on the whole text first (number or name), and only reads a trailing yes/no as the answer when nothing matches. So /model Just say no picks that setup, and with both "Work" and "Work yes" saved, /model Work yes picks "Work yes".
The lookup moved into a small _find_preset helper. New test: test_a_setup_named_with_a_trailing_yes_or_no_is_picked_by_its_full_name. tests/channels/test_model_command.py passes (11), ruff check is clean, and tests/channels is 157 passed with the same two voice-note failures as on main (missing voice extras here).

Thanks @bernalalexis-try! Your fix works: /model now finds the exact name or number first, as the last review asked, and the button asks before anything changes. I made two tiny fixes on your branch (below) and I'm approving. The one thing still blocking the merge is the CLA. Your signature is in, but commit dca421e is authored by a second account, @alexisnahuel-sys, which hasn't signed. If that's also you, please post this line from that account:
I have read the CLA Document and I hereby sign the CLA
What I pushed (df128bb, on top of your work, no force-push): both cases are in _model_command, and each has a new test in tests/channels/test_model_command.py.
/model undo no ran the undo. The trailing "no" was removed before the undo check, so "no" went back to the previous setup. It now replies "I don't have a model setup called 'undo no'", as main does.
A setup named Local only no or Local only yes took over the question's replies (CodeRabbit's open thread). With such a setup saved, answering "no" switched to that setup. Answering "yes" did too, and left the Local only switch off. Those two replies now always answer the question, and a setup with one of those names is still picked by its number or button.
How I tested it: a real engine (main at 2a3f848, then dca421e, then df128bb) on a fresh home, driving the real Telegram channel over HTTP with SENTIENT_TELEGRAM_API.
Simulated: Telegram's servers, a small fake Bot API on this computer with a made-up token. Messages and button taps from "Maya" were injected as updates through getUpdates. No real Telegram account or Discord was used.
Real: the engine, its config and REST API, the channel code, and a final chat on the local ollama_chat/qwen3:8b.
The starting setup was claude-code/sonnet with the switch off. After each step I read models back from GET /api/config.
Asks, nothing changes: "Turn on Local only too, so nothing leaves this computer? Reply /model Local only yes or /model Local only no"

After the "yes", a chat from the fake Telegram user was answered "pong" with primary ollama_chat/qwen3:8b and the switch on.
Review threads: none open. I replied to CodeRabbit's thread and resolved it. CodeRabbit's newest note suggests testing group members typing the answers. No change is needed, because other members' messages never reach a command by design (ADR 0029, _note_other).
Checks on df128bb: Lint, Changelog, Secret scan, Desktop and Engine tests on Linux and Windows all pass. 165 tests in tests/channels pass locally. The branch is 16 commits behind main with no conflicts, so I didn't merge main. CLA is the only red check.
