Webhook body templates JSON-escape values in JSON string literals.

Changes:

  • webhook-tools.mdx: new section "Values in a JSON body". It covers placeholders inside and outside strings, an example, and when a body counts as JSON.
  • dynamic-variables.mdx: the old line said values go into the body template as is. That is no longer true for JSON strings. It now links to the new section.

📝 Walkthrough

The webhook documentation now describes how placeholder values are inserted into JSON bodies. It distinguishes values inside JSON strings from values outside strings and documents content-type handling and header precedence.

Changes: Webhook JSON placeholder documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document JSON placeholder substitution
agents/build/dynamic-variables.mdx, agents/build/webhook-tools.mdx
The documentation states that values inside JSON strings are escaped. It describes content-type detection, Content-Type header precedence, and that placeholders outside strings are not validated as JSON. URL values remain URL-encoded, and header values remain inserted as-is.

The docs give conflicting guidance about unquoted placeholders, which could lead to malformed webhook payloads. Correct the guarantee before relying on these instructions.

Narrow the JSON-validity guarantee.

Line 56 says the platform keeps a JSON body valid. Line 59 says values outside strings are inserted as-is, and Line 75 says those values are not checked. A non-JSON value can therefore produce an invalid body. Limit the guarantee to values inside JSON strings.

 ### Values in a JSON body

-When the body is JSON, the platform keeps it valid. What happens to a value depends on where its placeholder sits:
+For a JSON body, the platform escapes placeholder values inside JSON strings. Values outside strings are inserted as-is and must be valid JSON:

 - **Inside a JSON string**, like `"note": "{{note}}"`: the value is JSON-escaped. Quotes, backslashes, and line breaks in it can't break the body.
 - **Outside a string**, like `"count": {{count}}`: the value is inserted as is. Use this to send a number, a boolean, or a whole object.

Only values inside JSON strings are escaped. A placeholder outside a string
is inserted as is, as the section already says.
