Summary

Fixes to the unlisted Realtime Speech to Text pages, from an external-customer integration test of these docs. The pages stay hidden and noindex; docs.json, llms.txt and openapi.json are untouched.

Merge only after fishaudio/realtime-asr#14 is deployed. Items 1–3 describe behaviour that ships with it.

  1. Audio must be MessagePack bin. Do not base64-encode it, and do not send it as a string or an array. A message that does is dropped and gets a recoverable invalid_request. This is covered in the reference, the AsyncAPI spec and the quickstart, which also notes the msgpack default to keep.
  2. Unknown fields.
    • An unknown or misspelled config field gets invalid_config and close 4400, and the message names the field.
    • configure with an unknown field, a changed audio or context.history gets ok: false, and nothing in it is applied. An identical audio is accepted.
    • audio is fixed for the session.
    • The old "context.history is ignored in configure" line is gone.
  3. Errors table. A first message that is not a readable config (a text frame or JSON) is invalid_config. invalid_request now covers only messages after config, including non-bin audio. JSON is not accepted in any frame.
  4. Idle limit. No config within 10 s gives idle_timeout and close 4408. A WebSocket ping counts as client activity, which the reference, the quickstart and the voice-agent cookbook now spell out: Python websockets pings every 20 s by default.
  5. Languages. Turn detection works on speech in every language, eager end of turn included; in some languages a turn can end a little later. The "trained on a set of languages / no eager outside it" text is removed.
  6. vad with short timeouts. At short values a sentence can arrive as several turns, and a word that starts softly can be split across two turns. The pages suggest starting with 500 ms or more.
  7. Sound tags. A new section explains tags such as [laughter] and [pause], and when to strip them. The voice-agent and browser helpers now strip them and collapse whitespace, and the voice agent no longer answers a tag-only turn. Whitespace after a speaker tag can vary.
  8. Smaller fixes:
    • Audio sent before session_started is read once the session starts.
    • Duck caps are about 2 s, and leftover echo opens turns.
    • Write the scheme exactly as Bearer.
    • Language labels: short text usually has none.
    • Concurrency links to the existing concurrent request limits.

There are no prices, language lists, Chinese characters or internal names. The cookbook recipes were run offline against a fake server that speaks the documented wire format (2/2 Python, 1/1 JS, browser strip() 6/6). The AsyncAPI spec parses, the MDX compiles and prettier passes. mint broken-links reports the same 25 issues as before, none in these files.

WebSocket reference and AsyncAPI spec, from the integration test:

- audio.data must be MessagePack bin with the raw PCM bytes; base64,
strings and arrays get a recoverable invalid_request and are dropped.
- config with an unknown field is invalid_config (close 4400, the
message names the field); configure with an unknown field, a changed
audio or context.history gets configured ok:false. audio is fixed
for the session; an identical audio is accepted.
- A first message that is not a readable config (text frame, JSON) is
invalid_config; invalid_request is for messages after config. JSON is
  not accepted in any frame.
- idle_timeout also covers no config within 10 s of connecting.
- A WebSocket ping keeps the session open (keepalive section).
- Audio sent before session_started is read once the session starts.
- Authorization: write the scheme exactly as "Bearer ".
- vad silence_timeout_ms: every pause of that length ends the turn;
start with 500 ms or more for conversation.
- Speakers: whitespace after a tag can vary; new Sound tags section.
- Language: "uh"/"um" ignored; short replies usually get no label.
- Connections count against the account concurrency limit.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Languages: turn detection, eager end of turn included, works on
speech in every language; in some languages a turn can end a little
  later.
- Speakers: trim after stripping tags; point to Sound tags.
- Limits: a connection counts against the same concurrency limit as
other API requests from open to close, linked to the pricing page.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Voice agent:
- words() strips speaker and sound tags and collapses whitespace, so a
turn that is only "[laughs]" is not answered.
- Cap a duck at about 2 seconds; echo can open turns for a whole reply.
- Watch the audio source: client pings keep a stalled session open.
- Languages: turn detection works in every language; vad mode at
500 ms or more for faster turns.

Quickstart:
- data must travel as MessagePack bin, not base64.
- One line on pings and the idle limit, linked to the voice agent page.
- Browser strip() removes sound tags too and collapses whitespace.
- Example output shows the usual space after the speaker tag.

…ns; send only listed fields

Language: "um" is not dropped before detection (it is also a word in other
languages), so list only "okay", "hmm" and "uh" as ignored interjections.

config and configure: not every field outside the documented list is refused,
so say to send only the listed fields and to check session_started.config /
configured.config for the settings in effect. Same in the AsyncAPI spec.

The examples can join transcript words and leave agent playback ducked through a long non-user turn. Correct both before merging unless these limitations are explicitly accepted.

`text` can contain sound tags in square brackets, such as `[laughter]`, `[laughs]`, `[sighs]` or `[pause]`, in every turn detection mode and whether `diarize` is on or off. The set is open: a tag can be any short description, sometimes several words long. A turn's text can be a tag alone. Language detection ignores tags.

Tags are sounds, not words. Strip them when you need only the words, for example for search, word counts, or deciding whether there is anything to answer: remove every match of the regular expression `\[[^\[\]]*\]`, then trim the text and collapse runs of whitespace into one space. If you keep them for a language model, tell it that they are sounds, and do not answer a turn that holds only tags.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Replace sound tags with spaces before collapsing whitespace.

If a transcript contains Good[laughs]morning, the stated procedure produces Goodmorning. The browser and voice-agent helpers follow that procedure. Replace each tag with a space before collapsing whitespace, and update both helpers so they preserve the word boundary.

3. On `user_turn_taken`, the user is taking the turn: stop the agent and send `agent_speaking: false`.
4. On `committed` with `user_turn: false`, restore the volume.
5. Cap any duck on your side to a few seconds: a turn over continuous background noise can last up to 20 seconds. When the user starts talking over such noise, `user_turn_taken` can come a few hundred milliseconds later than usual.
5. Cap any duck on your side at about 2 seconds, then restore the volume even if the turn is still open. For a real interruption, `user_turn_taken` normally comes within about a second of `speech_start`. Non-user turns can stay open much longer: leftover echo of your agent's own voice can open a turn that lasts as long as the reply, and a turn over continuous background noise can last up to 20 seconds. When the user starts talking over such noise, `user_turn_taken` can come a few hundred milliseconds later than usual.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Implement the duck limit in the recipe.

This step says to restore volume after about two seconds, but Agent.on_event has no timer after duck(True) at Line 162. If echo or background noise keeps a non-user turn open, a reader who replaces the duck() placeholder can leave the reply ducked until that turn commits. Add a bounded restoration task and cancel it when a backchannel, barge-in, or commit resolves the turn.
