an interactive Stroop test game

UNSYNC//SYSTEM — STROOP_TEST

A browser-based Stroop interference test with auditory chaos, score diagnosis, and error replay.

What It Is

This is a cognitive interference test. It presents the classic Stroop challenge with an added layer of difficulty: a synthesised voice simultaneously reads out a different color name to disrupt your focus. After 25 samples, the system scores your performance, delivers a neural diagnosis (just for fun, not real or accurate), and replays every mistake so you can see where your cognition broke down.

What Is the Stroop Effect?

The Stroop Effect is a psychological phenomenon first described by John Ridley Stroop in 1935. When the name of a color is printed in a different ink color — for example, the word RED written in blue ink — the brain experiences a conflict between two competing signals. Reading words is a deeply automatic process, so suppressing the word meaning and responding to the ink color instead requires deliberate cognitive effort.

This conflict slows response times and increases error rates, and is used widely in psychology and neuroscience as a measure of selective attention, processing speed, and executive function. Adding an auditory distractor — hearing a third, different color spoken aloud — compounds the interference further, forcing the brain to filter out two competing inputs at once.

How to Play

  1. Open the page and read the briefing on the welcome screen, then click INITIALIZE_SYSTEM.
  2. A color word will appear on screen, printed in a mismatched ink color. A voice will simultaneously speak a third, unrelated color name.
  3. Ignore both the word and the voice. Click the button that matches the ink color of the displayed word.
  4. You have 5 seconds per trial across 25 trials. Faster correct answers score more points.
  5. When all trials are complete, you will receive a Neural Diagnosis based on your score.
  6. Close the diagnosis to enter Replay Mode, where every error is shown with the correct answer highlighted.
