The port kept only a list of act summaries, so the ledger a model reads had no size limit, no clean-up of control characters, and no record of failed steps, and nothing existed for a trace page to read. Now every agent, locator, expect, and app call is a recorded step, as in upstream, and the ledger is built from those records with a byte budget, a bounded handoff, and sanitized text. The records are internal for now; the trace page and the app log come in later changes.

Closes #397

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • End-to-end test runs now record app, locator, assertion, and agent operations as steps, with status, timing, and relevant details.
    • Progress updates include step context, activity, replay status, and source location when available.
    • Agent prompts include a chronological summary of completed steps, with older entries omitted when needed to meet the size limit.
    • Unawaited steps are reported as failures, and cancellation is reflected in step results.
    • Error reports include sanitized, bounded messages and source locations when available.
  • Documentation
    • Updated compatibility notes clarify which operations are recorded and document step-recording limits.

The port kept only a list of act summaries, so the ledger could not be
bounded or sanitized and no later report had a step to read. Add
StepRecorder and the step records as upstream has them, record the agent,
locator, expect and app calls, and port serializeLedger with its byte
budget, handoff bound, replayed verdict and sanitizing.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds attempt-scoped step records for app, browser, locator, assertion, and agent operations. It records operation details and progress, classifies and sanitizes errors, and uses completed steps to create bounded agent prompt ledger context.

Step records capture operation metadata, outcomes, verification progress, and progress events. The recorder handles cancellation and unawaited work. Tests cover progress identity, source locations, step ownership, verification, and recorder outcomes.
Shared step recording integration

The session shares its recorder with app, browser, and screen operations. Locator and assertion operations run as recorded steps. Compatibility notes describe recorded operations, exclusions, and expect.poll behavior.
Agent steps and ledger context
src/E2E/Agent/*, tests/E2E.Tests/AgentLedger/*, skills/e2e-dotnet/references/agent.md, COMPATIBILITY.md
Agent operations run as recorded steps and attach explanations and metrics. Ledger serialization projects completed steps into sanitized, bounded prompt context, retaining newer entries when the byte limit is reached. Tests cover ordering, omissions, handoffs, and replayed verdicts.

The change broadens the information shared between test steps. Text filtering and existing execution limits constrain exposure, but attempt completion is not connected to closing the new history. No new privilege escalation or cross-attempt access was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new attempt history is not closed with its owning attempt. Production construction does not connect recorder cancellation to attempt termination, and session completion and disposal do not invoke the recorder's abandonment or settlement transitions. An unfinished operation can therefore retain a running record and update the old history after logical completion, rather than receiving the intended unawaited-step outcome. This concerns ownership of the newly introduced history; it is not evidence that the PR newly permits asynchronous app work to outlive completion or cross into another attempt.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected flow affects later actions within the owning test attempt and disclosure to its configured execution provider. Separate attempt identity and recorder ownership constrain direct history sharing. No new tenant-wide authority or deployment-level privilege was established by this flow.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Recorded natural-language content can influence subsequent decisions, and character sanitization does not make it authoritative or semantically trustworthy. Natural-language completion summaries already entered this context at the base. The broader head input does not itself grant tools: dispatch still rejects unknown tools and uses the existing action path. An introduced instruction-following exploit was not established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Abandonment snapshots running records separately from marking them abandoned. Concurrent completion can therefore precede a later failure overwrite or duplicate terminal publication. No production abandonment caller or consumer of the recorder's verification watermark was found, so this is not treated as a demonstrated current authorization or cache-integrity failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define one atomic recorder-closing transition before integrating termination with reporting or other consumers. It should prevent new steps, arbitrate completion versus abandonment exactly once, and bound settlement before teardown without treating observation of a task as cancellation of its external effects.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #397 requires the step-record model and full serializeLedger behavior, or a compatibility note that the feature is not ported. The PR implements StepRecorder integration for agent, locator, expect, and app calls, including failed-step records. Ledger.ProjectPriorSteps sanitizes record text. Ledger.SerializeLedger retains newest entries within the configured budget, emits entries in chronological order, reports omitted entries, bounds handoffs, and uses the recorded verdict for self-finalized replayed steps. The four requested behaviors have focused tests in SerializeLedgerTests, and control-character sanitization has a focused test in ProjectPriorStepsTests.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed production code supports issue #397. Step recording, failure classification, text sanitization, source tracking, replay handling, and fixture integration provide the records required by the bounded ledger. The added recorder and ledger tests verify this implementation. The compatibility and agent documentation updates describe the recorded operations and ledger limit. The trace page and app-log integrations remain deferred as stated in the current PR description. The evidence does not demonstrate an unrelated change.

Fixed: the waitForURL finding. COMPATIBILITY.md now says Browser.WaitForURLAsync is recorded as expect.toHaveURL. Declined: passing an API name through PollAsync. Upstream records waitForURL as a browser-fixture step, and those steps are not ported yet, so the name changes when they are.
