Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on signed commits, including signing requirements for contributors, apps, bots and workflows.
    • Clarified that pull requests must be squash-merged and that branches containing unsigned commits must be recreated with signed commits. Rebase merges are disabled.

Walkthrough

Both contribution guides document signed-commit requirements, signing methods for people and automated actors, and rules for merging pull requests with signed commits.

not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and force-push the updated
branch. Keep the existing PR; open a new PR only if branch rules prevent
updating the branch.

Use the estate-compliant recovery process in both contribution guides.

The Markdown instructions tell contributors to force-push and retain the existing pull request. The estate signing policy requires checking the rewritten branch, opening a new pull request, closing the old pull request, and not force-pushing. The AsciiDoc instructions also omit these required steps.

‼️ IMPORTANT
Carefully review the code before committing. Ensure that it accurately replaces the highlighted code, contains no missing lines, and has no issues with indentation. Thoroughly test & benchmark the code to ensure it meets the requirements.

Suggested change
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and force-push the updated
branch. Keep the existing PR; open a new PR only if branch rules prevent
updating the branch.

Review comment at @.github/CONTRIBUTING.md around lines 136 - 139:
Update the signed-commit recovery instructions in both contribution guides:
after recreating the branch with signed commits, instruct contributors to check
the rewritten branch, open a new pull request, close the old pull request, and
not force-push. Remove guidance to retain the existing pull request.

Document merge blocking, not push rejection.

The signing policy documents that required_signatures checks each commit on the PR branch and blocks the PR. It does not establish that the push itself is refused. Update both contribution guides to state the documented enforcement point:

Suggested fix
- A ruleset refuses unsigned pushes.
+ An unsigned commit on a PR branch blocks merging the PR.

Apply this change in CONTRIBUTING.adoc and .github/CONTRIBUTING.md.

Review comment at @.github/CONTRIBUTING.md at line 140:
Update the signing-policy wording in both contribution guides to say that an
unsigned commit on a PR branch blocks merging, rather than implying that
unsigned pushes are refused; keep the existing explanation of rebase-merge
behavior unchanged.
