Summary

Run AutoData natively with uv sync and uv run

Detailed description

  • AutoData ran only in its Docker image or in a conda environment built by conda_installer.sh. This adds a uv project, so a Linux x86_64 GPU host can install the stack Arena's lock validated with uv sync --locked and run commands with uv run --locked.
  • pyproject.toml replaces setup.py. The Sim, Lab and Arena stack is the default sim dependency group, the test tools are dev, and cuRobo is the opt-in curobo group. The resolver settings mirror Arena's [tool.uv].
  • uv.lock is seeded from Arena's lock, so every package both locks share keeps Arena's version and dependencies. autodata_tests/utils/test_uv_lock.py checks this and the mirrored settings.
  • CI: a CPU job runs uv lock --locked and that test, including for fork PRs. The nightly adds a native GPU job: uv sync --locked, the unit tests and the Franka MimicGen test.
  • The installation page (including cuRobo), support matrix, quickstart, testing, troubleshooting and SkillGen preflight pages, the README, AGENTS.md and the dataset-generation skill describe the uv environment. The skill scripts use Isaac Sim's Python in the container and the active environment's python elsewhere.
  • The recording e2e test puts the repository root on its child's PYTHONPATH, which only the container set.
  • Docker stays the recommended installation and the premerge GPU environment. pip ignores the uv-only tables, so the image builds as before. conda_installer.sh is unchanged. The uv route requires uv 0.12.21 or newer.

Test plan

  • uv lock --locked and pytest autodata_tests/utils/test_uv_lock.py: 2 passed. The test fails on an unseeded lock, on a lock written by uv 0.13.5, and with an edited override.
  • Fresh uv sync --locked with uv 0.12.21 on Ubuntu 24.04: 359 packages; the submodules stay clean.
  • uv sync --locked --group curobo builds cuRobo for the detected GPU; the installed version matches the lock.
  • uv run --locked pytest autodata_tests/e2e/ autodata_tests/interfaces/ autodata_tests/core/ autodata_tests/utils/: 366 passed, none skipped, including SkillGen (24 min).
  • skills/autodata-generate-datasets/scripts/run_generation.sh under uv run --locked generates and validates two Franka demos.
  • The Docker image builds from this branch with both pip check steps passing, and test_uv_lock.py passes in the container.
  • pre-commit run --all-files and make -C docs html SPHINXOPTS=-W pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Run AutoData natively on Linux x86_64 with a locked uv environment, including optional cuRobo support for SkillGen.
    • Run dataset generation and replay from either the development container or native uv environment.
  • Documentation

    • Added native installation, setup, testing, troubleshooting, and dataset-generation guidance.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Updated visualization dependency guidance and fixed recorder test imports.
  • Chores

    • Added automated checks for dependency-lock consistency and native GPU workflows.

Add uv project metadata and a uv.lock seeded from Arena's lock, so
`uv sync --locked` and `uv run --locked` work on a Linux x86_64 GPU host
without a container. Docker remains the recommended installation.

- pyproject.toml replaces setup.py and mirrors Arena's resolver settings.
- A drift test keeps shared packages at Arena's locked versions and
dependencies. A CPU CI job checks the lock; a nightly GPU job runs the
  native installation.
- cuRobo installs with `uv sync --locked --group curobo`.
- The docs, AGENTS.md and the dataset-generation skill describe the uv
  environment.

📝 Walkthrough

The project adds a locked native uv environment for Linux x86_64. Generation scripts, setup guidance, and SkillGen instructions support native execution alongside Docker. CI adds lockfile checks and a GPU test job that uses the uv environment.

Changes: Native uv Environment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Project metadata and build configuration
pyproject.toml, setup.py, docker/Dockerfile.autodata, docs/conf.py
Project metadata, dependencies, resolver settings, and package discovery are defined in pyproject.toml; setup.py is removed. The Docker build no longer copies setup.py, and the docs version comes from project metadata.
Native interpreter selection and test setup
skills/autodata-generate-datasets/scripts/*, autodata_tests/e2e/test_recording.py, autodata_interfaces/motion_planners/curobo/plan_visualizer.py
Generation scripts can use the active Python when Isaac Sim Python is unavailable and isaaclab_arena imports. The recording test adds the repository root to PYTHONPATH; the Rerun error message names rerun-sdk.
Native setup and generation guidance
AGENTS.md, README.md, docs/pages/*, skills/autodata-generate-datasets/*
Instructions describe locked uv setup and command execution alongside Docker. SkillGen guidance identifies the uv curobo group as an alternative to the cuRobo container.
Lock validation and native CI
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/nightly.yml, autodata_tests/utils/test_uv_lock.py
CI checks lockfile consistency and resolver settings against Arena. A GPU job syncs the locked environment and runs unit tests and a Franka MimicGen test.

Include the curobo group in the native SkillGen command.

The command shows only uv sync --locked, while the comment says SkillGen needs --group curobo. A user who copies the command gets the default groups and then fails with missing cuRobo dependencies. Show uv sync --locked --group curobo for the SkillGen setup.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Separate Docker prerequisites from the native uv path.

The Quick Start lists Docker, NVIDIA Container Toolkit, and an NGC account as unconditional prerequisites, then requires docker login nvcr.io and ./docker/run_docker.sh before presenting native uv. Move the Docker-only prerequisites and launch steps into a Docker-specific path so native Linux x86_64 users can proceed directly to uv sync --locked.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Invoke the generation helper through uv.

After uv sync --locked, Step 3 runs the helper directly. Without an activated environment, run_generation.sh can select the host python, fail to find isaaclab_arena, and exit before generation. Document the native command with the uv environment:
