Yes — closing. This cannot merge, and it is the same situation as mapbox/mapbox-cli-private#135, from the same Dependabot branch (cargo-b0d2ae7c79).

It moves Cargo.lock alone: rand 0.8.8 and its subtree come out, while Cargo.toml on main still declares rand = "0.8". Those are incompatible, so every --locked invocation refuses —

error: cannot update the lock file … because --locked was passed to prevent this

— hence build red on macos-14, ubuntu-latest and windows-2022. Re-running won't change it.

#6 is the version that works, because it moves the manifest too. Two things it found along the way:

• The migration removes six crates and adds none. The lock already carried rand 0.10.2, because quinn-proto needs it through reqwest — so rand = "0.8" was forcing a second, older copy alongside it. 207 packages to 201.
• There was no urgency. The advisories job passes on 0.8.8 (and passes on this PR too, as you can see above), so nothing shipped was vulnerable. The 0.10.1 soundness and 0.10.2 memory-safety fixes in the changelog don't apply to the version we were on.

Worth knowing this will recur until #6 lands: a grouped cargo update containing one out-of-range entry poisons the whole PR, so the weekly lockfile bumps this repo's dependabot.yml is meant to keep flowing stay blocked meanwhile. After #6 the manifest is at 0.10 and ordinary lockfile moves go through cleanly.
