Reject extended type byte 0 in the pure Python reader - #499
The pure Python decoder computed type_num = next_byte + 7 for an extended type and then checked type_num < 7, which can never be true. So extended type byte 0 decoded as type 7, a map. The decoder now rejects extended type byte 0 with InvalidDatabaseError.
The test covers extended type byte 0 and byte 9 (type 16, not defined). Both raise InvalidDatabaseError.
This change applies to the pure Python reader only. The C extension gets the type from libmaxminddb, and libmaxminddb 1.14.0 decodes extended type byte 0 as a map. maxmind/libmaxminddb#515 adds that check. The C extension will reject the byte after a libmaxminddb release with that change.
The pure Python reader now raises an invalid database error for an extended type byte of zero instead of interpreting it as a map.
Unsupported extended type values produce errors that identify the byte, and extended type bytes beyond the available data are rejected as invalid data.
The C extension may still interpret a zero extended type byte as a map, depending on the installed libmaxminddb version.

The pure Python decoder now rejects extended type byte 0 and unsupported extended types. Tests cover invalid byte values and bytes beyond data_end. A reader test records that the C extension decodes byte 0 as an empty map, while the pure Python reader raises InvalidDatabaseError.
The decoder rejects extended type byte 0 and reports unsupported types by their extended byte value. Tests cover bytes 0x00, 0x05, 0x06, 0x09, and 0xFF, as well as bytes beyond data_end. The reader test checks the differing behavior of the C extension and pure Python reader. The changelog records that difference.
A system-library build may fail its tests if the build flag is absent during testing. Keep the flag set for both steps.

The check for an invalid extended type byte compared the type number
to 7, so it never matched. Extended type byte 0 decoded as a map. It
now raises InvalidDatabaseError.
The C extension still decodes this byte as a map, because libmaxminddb
does not check it.

This makes the result for one file depend on the mode. The vendored libmaxminddb still decodes extended type byte 0 as a map (get_ext_type in extension/libmaxminddb/src/maxminddb.c has no check). With MODE_AUTO, open_database(path) uses the C extension and returns {} for a record encoded as 0x00 0x00. open_database(file_object) uses the pure Python reader and raises InvalidDatabaseError. If metadata uses this encoding, the pure Python reader fails at open, but the C extension opens the file.
HISTORY.rst documents this. But the full fix belongs in libmaxminddb decode_one, so that both readers agree. The Java reader and the Go v2 reader already reject byte 0. Is an upstream libmaxminddb change planned?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Yes. maxmind/libmaxminddb#515 makes decode_one return MMDB_INVALID_DATA_ERROR for extended type bytes outside 1 through 8. After a libmaxminddb release with that change, the C extension rejects byte 0 too. The new reader test from 6800b21 fails then, so HISTORY.rst gets updated at that time.

This reads the extended type byte with no data_end check. libmaxminddb rejects an extended type byte past the data section (maxminddb.c, "Extended type offset past data section"). This PR rewrites this function, so it is a good place to add the same bound.
In both examples, the type byte is past data_end. In a real Reader, the byte at data_end is always 0xAB from the metadata marker. Thus a last value that ends with a bare 0x00 gives "Unexpected type number (178) encountered", not the bad-data error that libmaxminddb gives.

Added in 2896d9b. _decode now raises the bad-data error if the extended type byte is at or past data_end. The new decoder test uses both of your examples.

Invalid extended type bytes now give two different messages. Byte 0 gives the generic _BAD_DATA message. Bytes 5, 6 and 9 to 255 give "Unexpected type number (N) encountered". The removed message named the extended type problem. Now a byte 0 error has no type information, and it looks the same as a truncated-payload error.
Consider a message that names the extended type, or one message for all invalid extended type bytes. Then the test can also use one regex.

Changed in fa653a5. Byte 0 and bytes 5, 6 and 9 to 255 now all give Invalid extended type byte (N). Only an extended type can reach case _, so it uses the same message. The test uses one regex.

This test calls only Decoder. No reader-level test runs in every mode to check the HISTORY.rst claim that the C extension still decodes byte 0 as a map. If the vendored libmaxminddb starts to reject byte 0, or the pure Python reader accepts it again, no test fails, and the HISTORY.rst entry becomes false. The MODE_FILE and MODE_MMAP reader paths are also not tested for this byte.
The _database(records, ip_version=..., data=...) helper in tests/reader_test.py can build a small database for a test that runs in each mode.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Added in 6800b21. test_extended_type_byte_0 builds a database with _database and runs in each mode. The pure Python modes must raise InvalidDatabaseError, and the C extension with the bundled libmaxminddb must return {}. If the bundled libmaxminddb starts to reject the byte, the test fails. With a system libmaxminddb (MAXMINDDB_USE_SYSTEM_LIBMAXMINDDB), the test also accepts InvalidDatabaseError, because a newer system library can already reject it.

The table tests only 0x00 and 0x09. Bytes 0x05 and 0x06 (type 12, data cache container, and type 13, end marker) and the maximum byte 0xFF are also invalid in records. Add them to the table. Then the test fails if a later change to the match statement adds case 12, case 13 or a wider range.

(This applies to the call at line 354 in _decode, which is outside the diff.)
_read_extended now has a three-line body, but _decode still calls it as a method for each extended-type value. The comment above _decode says to keep type dispatch inline to avoid a call for each decoded value. Each array, boolean, int32, uint64, uint128 and float value has this extra call, and GeoIP2 City records contain arrays and booleans. If the read and the zero check are inlined in _decode, the call goes away and the behavior stays the same.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Inlined in cf9b2db, and _read_extended is gone. I timed pure Python lookups of random IPv4 addresses in GeoLite2-City (MODE_MEMORY, one pinned CPU, 8 interleaved runs per tree). The branch head is within noise of main: median 31.79 µs against 31.63 µs per lookup (+0.5%). Its fastest run was the fastest of all three trees.

_decode called _read_extended for each value with an extended type,
such as arrays, booleans and uint64 values. The read and the byte 0
check are now inline, as the comment above _decode asks. The behavior
does not change.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The decoder read the extended type byte with no data_end check. If the
last byte of the data section was an extended ctrl byte, it read the
next byte as the type. In a Reader, that byte is 0xAB from the metadata
marker, so the error was "Unexpected type number (178) encountered". A
Decoder with a smaller data_end could return a value. The decoder now
raises the bad-data error, as libmaxminddb does.

Extended type byte 0 gave the generic bad-data message, and bytes 5, 6
and 9 to 255 gave "Unexpected type number (N) encountered". Both now
give "Invalid extended type byte (N)", which names the cause.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Bytes 5 and 6 are types 12 and 13, the data cache container and the end
marker, which a record cannot hold. Byte 255 is the largest byte. The
test now fails if a later change to the type match accepts them.

The decoder test called only Decoder. This test opens a database whose
record has extended type byte 0 in each mode. The pure Python reader
must raise InvalidDatabaseError. With the bundled libmaxminddb, the C
extension must return an empty map. If the bundled libmaxminddb starts
to reject the byte, the test fails, and the HISTORY.rst entry needs a
change. A system libmaxminddb can already reject it, so the test also
accepts InvalidDatabaseError when MAXMINDDB_USE_SYSTEM_LIBMAXMINDDB is
set.
