I'm getting all sorts of errors too 1.133.0 on mac and 1.132.1 on PC, works fine on the provider and with other api consumers only both VS code installations stopped working.

I am using windows also tried on WSL and on latest version of vscode, using agents window with local harness.
OpenAI provider and also checked api key is working fine.

Investigation update. Sharing findings here since the issue is marked info-needed — the short version is that we can explain the blank error, but not yet the failure behind it.

The blank error is a client-side defect, and it's fixed

{"code":0,"message":"","metadata":{}} comes from VS Code, not from the provider. When a Responses stream ends with a terminal event whose error object is present but omits the code/message the API contract requires, our mapping collapsed it to an empty struct — and the BYOK path promotes that struct to the entire user-facing reason. An outage, a malformed request, and a transport fault all produced the same unreadable string.

#331281 makes those failures describe themselves, and includes the provider's response id so a report can be correlated with the provider's own logs.

Worth noting this string is a Responses-path signature. The Chat Completions path forwards the provider error verbatim and never synthesizes code: 0 plus a metadata wrapper, so if you see this exact shape, the request went through the Responses translation.

Not a recent regression, but newly exposed

The mapping was introduced in 1.121.0 and is byte-identical through 1.133.0. What changed is reachability: the Agent Host BYOK proxy moved from Chat Completions to Responses in 1.132.0, first routing Agents Window traffic through it — eight days before the first report here.

The editor-window BYOK path has advertised the Responses endpoint far longer, which is consistent with #327458 reporting the identical string on 1.130.0.

What we ruled out

Against the Copilot SDK version that shipped in the affected build:

• Malformed parameterless tool schema (the shape fixed in Copilot Chat generates invalid tool schema for terminal_last_command when using BYOK Responses API #330610) — the SDK either normalizes an omitted schema to a valid object schema or drops the tool outright; neither reaches the provider malformed on this path.
• Dropped tool-call continuation (related to Fix missing tool outputs when reusing Responses API state #330510) — the continuation replays its function_call_output intact.
• Request shape as a deterministic trigger — 32 live requests against gpt-5.6-luna and gpt-5.5, including agent-sized payloads (64KB context, 60 tools, high reasoning effort) and a counterfactual toggling the two fields we send only to GPT-5.6, all completed normally.

So the request VS Code builds does not appear to be the trigger.

Still open: transport

The most promising remaining lead is the HTTP stack. #327458 reported this same string, found that requests succeeded through a proxy but failed on a direct connection, and resolved it with:

That's consistent with reports here spanning local and WSL hosts, where the available fetcher differs (the Electron fetcher can't load in a remote extension host).

If you're hitting this, two things would help a lot:

1. Does setting github.copilot.advanced.debug.useElectronFetcher to true change anything?
2. The failing entry from the GitHub Copilot Chat output channel — particularly the ccreq: line, which shows the model and elapsed time.

Once #331281 ships, the error itself should say which layer is responsible, which is what unblocks the rest.
