Serialize the neighbor check with the first stamp
Concurrent first-frame writes can bypass this rule: groups are independently writable and received on independent streams, while GroupState::stamp currently runs under only that group's lock. If two unstamped neighboring groups are written concurrently, each can observe the other as unstamped and accept starts that rewind by sequence. The plan needs to make the neighbor comparison and first stamp atomic under shared track state, with the existing track-before-group lock order, so the promised invariant actually holds.

Validate groups populated before writeGroup
In JS, callers can write frames to a standalone GroupProducer before passing it to track.writeGroup, as existing tests already do. Its start is therefore stamped before the group has any track or timeline context, and the proposed check at state.timestamp ??= frame.timestamp cannot compare neighbors; writeGroup would then cache and fan out the rewind without another stamp. Validate an already-started group when it is attached to the track, before publishing it, and add that pre-populated path to the regression cases.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Agreed. The Plan now checks an already-started JS group when writeGroup attaches it, before it is cached or fanned out, and the regression list covers that path.

Require a mocked wall clock instead of the fallback
When moq-clock has not landed, this fallback still reads host SystemTime; bracketing only changes the assertion bounds and does not prevent a short grant from expiring during scheduling before Grant::validate or Grant::deadline. The prescribed reproduction delay can therefore still make admission fail or panic in duration calculations, so it does not meet the goal of passing under arbitrary load. Make the controlled clock a prerequisite rather than retaining this fallback.

Benchmark stamping across retained cache depths
The existing Rust group_write_frames benchmark creates a fresh track containing only the group being written, so it cannot detect a stamping implementation whose neighbor search scans the retained lookup. Confirming only that benchmark would miss exactly the cache-size slope this change risks. Add a write/stamp row swept over retained group counts, in addition to any JS coverage, so the claimed one-neighbor cost is measured.

Agreed. The Plan now asks for a benchmark row that stamps groups swept over the retained group count, since group_write_frames writes into an otherwise empty track.

One additional P2 plan issue below: a resumed group's first received timestamp is not necessarily its original start.
I also confirmed the existing prefilled-JS-group gap (#5474 (comment)) and host-wall-clock fallback problem (#5474 (comment)); referencing those instead of duplicating inline comments. Bracketing alone cannot prevent a short credential expiring before admission, and the cited auth test can still unwrap an already-past wall expiry.
Overall, the chosen no-rewinds policy and sequence-based two-sided checks are reasonable. The plan should cover all insertion shapes and distinguish authoritative starts from partial observations before tightening the invariant. Controlled wall and monotonic time is the right fix for the auth flakes.

[P2] Distinguish original group starts from resumed tail timestamps
Rust receives partial groups using start_at(hdr.frame_start) (lite/subscriber.rs:910–913), and GroupState::stamp records the first received frame, even when its index is nonzero. A valid overlapping pair can have group 0 start at 100 ms and contain a 166 ms frame, while group 1 starts at 150 ms; moq-mux explicitly accepts this in container/producer.rs:1621–1635. Receiving group 0 from frame 2 alongside cached group 1 would make this proposed neighbor check reject 166 > 150 and abort a non-rewinding track. Specify how original starts are retained/recovered, or handle unknown partial starts without treating them as original starts. Add a resumed/fetched partial-group regression with valid overlapping groups.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed. Only an original start counts now: a group whose first held frame is not index 0 is neither checked nor used as a neighbor's bound, and a resumed partial group of a valid overlapping pair is a regression case.

No new actionable finding. The plan now addresses our partial-start finding: unknown original starts are neither validated as starts nor used as neighbor bounds, and a resumed valid-overlap regression is required. It also covers prefilled JS groups, atomic track-level validation before mutation, and a retained-cache-depth benchmark.
The auth test plan now requires the controlled-clock crate, removes the host-wall bracketing fallback and includes the previously cited vulnerable bracketing test. These changes address the prior plan findings; they are not evidence that the future implementation/tests have passed.
Direction is sound and the added requirements close concrete gaps without changing the chosen policy. Verification: GitHub-only static delta and discussion review; no tests or benchmarks executed.

Cover streamed frame creation in the rewind check
The Rust inventory omits Producer::create_frame and create_frame_owned: both call open_frame, which stamps the group after installing the partial frame and advancing next_index. Preserve timestamp bounds after cache eviction
Exempting evicted groups permits the rewind the quest intends to eliminate. For example, create an unstamped latest group, let its stamped predecessor age out through Rust's evict_expired_scan or JS's #prune, then write the latest group's first frame below that predecessor's start; no lower neighbor remains, so the proposed check accepts it and the track's presentation edge moves backward. Retain enough timestamp history to validate the delayed stamp, or refuse it when its required bound has been discarded, and test this eviction case.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed. The track now keeps the sequence and original start of the highest-sequence group it evicted, and a group above it with no cached lower neighbor is checked against that: one entry, so nothing grows with the cache. The eviction case is a regression test.

Refuse late groups below the eviction watermark
The one-entry scheme only preserves a lower bound for sequences above the eviction watermark. For example, after groups 10@100 and 20@200 are evicted, a delayed group 5@150 has no cached upper neighbor and is accepted; if the legitimate group 10 is later refetched, it is then incorrectly rejected as a rewind. Fresh evidence beyond the prior eviction comment is this supported late/refetched lower-sequence path: JS writeGroup accepts long-evicted sequences, and Rust explicitly permits older groups to arrive after finish. Preserve the needed ordered bounds, or refuse original starts at or below the watermark once their upper history has been discarded, and cover that case in the regressions.

Agreed. A late or refetched group at or below the watermark is now checked only against the watermark as an upper bound and never serves as another group's bound, so a refetched legitimate group is never refused because of it. The Plan states the guarantee as covering the starts a hop still holds, not evicted history, and the regression list covers the late-then-refetch case. Refusing every start below the watermark was rejected because it would refuse legitimate backfill.

The streamed-frame preflight and retained eviction bound address the earlier gaps. Excluding history-incomplete refetches from future bounds also addresses the reported late-group poisoning example. One new P2 remains in that refinement: eviction is not a sequence prefix, so the watermark must not replace surviving authoritative neighbors (inline).

[P2] Keep surviving cached neighbors when checking below the watermark
Eviction is not a sequence prefix: JS #prune retains each recently written group independently (track.ts:831–850), and Rust does likewise (track.rs:1026–1038). Start with 10@100, 20@200, 30@300; keep writing group 10 while idle 20 expires and latest 30 remains protected. The watermark is now 20@200 but authoritative 10@100 is still cached. A late 5@150 passes the proposed watermark-only upper bound, despite rewinding against that retained successor. This violates even the narrowed 'starts it still holds' guarantee. Validate late/refetched groups against surviving authoritative cached neighbors as well as the watermark; only newly admitted history-incomplete groups need exclusion from future bounds. Add a non-prefix-eviction regression. This is distinct from the prior example where both 10 and 20 had been evicted.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed. A late or refetched group below the watermark is now checked against its surviving cached neighbors plus the watermark as an upper bound, since eviction is not a sequence prefix. Only its use as a bound for other groups is excluded. The non-prefix eviction case is a regression test.

Also folded in the follow-up from the latest OpenAI review: a group above the watermark is checked against both its cached neighbors and the watermark, never one in place of the other, and the delayed-stamp variant (10 survives, 20 evicted, 30 stamps at 150) is a regression case.

The below-watermark example in our previous finding is fixed: late groups now consult surviving cached neighbors, with explicit non-prefix eviction coverage.
One residual case of the same non-prefix-bound problem remains in the adjacent, unchanged rule at quest/m1/refuse-rewinds.md:57–58, so I am referencing the existing finding rather than adding another inline thread: #5474 (comment) . Keep authoritative 10@100 active, evict idle 20@200, and leave latest 30 unstamped. Stamping 30@150 sees cached lower neighbor 10, so the proposed 'with no cached lower neighbor' condition skips watermark 20 and admits the rewind. For candidates above the watermark, combine cached and retained historical bounds instead of treating them as alternatives; add this delayed-stamp variant to the regression.
The bounded-history direction remains reasonable; this needs no additional historical entries. Other prior plan corrections remain intact. Verification: static GitHub review only; no implementation or tests executed.

Refuse unprovable groups below the eviction watermark
Fresh evidence beyond the prior eviction threads is that the final plan now explicitly weakens the guarantee to retained history. For example, after groups 4@100 and 20@200 are evicted, the watermark is 20@200; a late group 5@50 with no surviving neighbor passes the watermark's upper bound even though it rewinds from group 4. That contradicts the goal of never holding a rewind and lets the timestamp-dependent delivery logic see one. Preserve enough lower-bound history for these sequences, or refuse a late group when its required lower bound has been discarded.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The Plan now makes this an explicit open decision rather than a silent weakening. Recommended: accept a late group whose lower bound was evicted as unverified, and keep it out of every other group's bounds and out of timestamp-driven expiry, so backfill below the watermark keeps working (fetched backfill is already served by sequence only). Alternative listed: refuse it, which keeps the Goal absolute but refuses legitimate backfill of evicted history. Keeping full lower-bound history would grow with everything ever evicted. The maintainer settles this in the implementation PR.

History-incomplete backfill is now an explicit implementation-time maintainer decision, with the accept-unverified versus refuse tradeoff documented; it is not yet a settled policy. The auth plan also correctly identifies Grant::validate() and deadline() as clock consumers.

Keep per-frame rewind detection
Do not delete these consumer checks after implementing only the stated first-frame rule. For example, group 0 can start at 100 and group 1 can contain frames at 200 and then 50: the model accepts group 1 when its first frame lands, while the existing Rust check in rs/moq-mux/src/container/consumer.rs:302-305 and JS check in js/hang/src/container/consumer.ts:541-543 reject the later frame below the previous group's start. A foreign wire publisher bypasses the container producer's per-frame floor, so either save and enforce the neighboring floor on every model write or retain these consumer checks and add this regression.

Abort ingress tracks when a rewind write fails
Wire the new error into the ingress-specific track-abort paths rather than relying on the model write failure alone. Mark the reused error as a wire behavior change
When a peer sends a rewinding group, the implementation will newly expose TimestampMismatch code 0x39 and abort the track, so this changes observable wire behavior even though the numeric code already exists. The planned draft-description update confirms that its wire semantics are broadening; reporting Wire: none could cause the implementation PR to omit the required cross-language interop validation. Describe this as a backward-compatible wire behavior change and run just test interop --all.

Two quests, scoped by the maintainer in session (no interview).
quest/m1/refuse-rewinds.md[S]A timed track refuses a group whose first frame is earlier than the previous group's, in Rust and js/net. Untimed tracks are exempt. Follows the 2026-10-13 decision on #5446 to never support timestamp rewinds.
Decision prompts recorded in the Plan:
TimestampMismatch(0x39) and broaden its description (recommended): no new code or variant.TimestampRewindwith its own stream code.reachdoc comment:reachto the first stamped group above (now safe; left as a follow-up).Reconciled with existing quests:
hop-aligned-import.mdandepoch-anchor.mdalready treat a rewind as fatal at the importer, so nothing contradicts; both are linked. The container-layer refusals (moq-muxcontainer::Producer, js/hangConsumer) stay on the producer side; only unreachable consumer checks go.quest/m1/test-flakes-2/auth-refresh-mock-time.md[XS]an_outage_refuses_transiently_and_never_extends_the_expiry,renewal_outlives_the_initial_credential_and_withdrawal_ends_only_its_grant, anda_fixed_lease_still_expiresfailed under load on 2026-10-13 (#5148, #5462, #5446). They mix wall-clockSystemTimegrant expiry with paused Tokio time or real sockets.quest/m1/time/crate.md. The fixed-lease test moves onto in-memory sessions, andan_outage_keeps_the_session_until_expiresjoins the same clock.SystemTime, so a short grant can still expire before admission under load, and bracketing the bounds cannot stop that.Review follow-ups folded into the rewind quest: the neighbor check and first stamp are atomic under the track state, the check runs before the frame commits, only an original (index 0) start counts so resumed partial groups are not misjudged, a JS group written before
writeGroupis checked on attach, the streamed-frame path (open_frame) is covered, the track keeps the last evicted group's start and checks it alongside cached neighbors, and a benchmark row sweeps retained group count.Left open in the rewind quest for the implementer and maintainer: a late group below the eviction watermark whose lower bound was evicted.
This replaces
auth-refresh-expiry.md, which covered only the outage test with the same root cause; its analysis is folded in.Public API: none. Wire: none (quest files only).
