Plans two quests for a @moq/net bug: closing a lite subscription while it still waits for TRACK_INFO surfaces ProtocolViolation: subscribe stream ended without SUBSCRIBE_END as an unhandled rejection (deterministic on 0.4.3 against moq-relay main; Node exits on it).

  • quest/m1/subscribe-close-throw.md [S]: on main, #runResponses stops throwing for an end of stream the subscriber caused by closing, and the lite draft says a subscriber's cancel owes no SUBSCRIBE_END. main already has the race fix (ca89952) and avoids the setup-time SUBSCRIBE, but still throws (swallowed) on every ordinary unsubscribe.
  • quest/m1/subscribe-close-backport.md [S]: ports that fix and the raceUntil loser fix onto release for a 0.17 patch after chore: release #5420, with a relay-backed repro.

Scope, milestone, and rank are proposals for the maintainer's review.

Decisions

Goal: "Closing a subscription in @moq/net never throws ProtocolViolation for an end of stream the client caused itself, and never leaves an unhandled rejection."

  • ✅ Confirm (recommended)
  • Narrow to defect 3

How should the release line get the fix?

  • ✅ Later 0.17 patch, own backport PR, don't hold chore: release #5420 (recommended)
  • Hold the pending cut
  • Main only

How should #runResponses tell a self-caused end of stream from a publisher FIN without SUBSCRIBE_END?

  • ✅ Producer already closed (recommended)
  • Explicit cancel flag on the entry

Clarify in the lite draft that a subscriber's cancel owes no SUBSCRIBE_END?

  • ✅ One sentence, in the main PR (recommended)
  • Leave the draft

On the backport, stop #openSubscribe sending a SUBSCRIBE for a producer closed during setup?

  • ✅ No, keep it minimal (recommended)
  • Yes, bail out

Layout

  • Two m0 quests (recommended)
  • One m0 quest, main only
  • ✅ Two quests in m1

Rank in m1

  • ✅ After FETCH edge cases (recommended)
  • Near the top
  • With the JS work

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit aa64148.

No actionable bugs found in this planning change. The producer-closed guard is a reasonable, minimal way to distinguish local teardown from an unsolicited publisher FIN; retaining the missing-SUBSCRIBE_END failure while the producer is open preserves the protocol check. The separate release backport, including only the signals fix/test from ca89952, avoids unrelated changes.

Implementation detail: make the ordinary-unsubscribe regression observe the internal response promise through a narrow test seam or helper. Public closure/log assertions alone would pass while the existing rejection is swallowed. Use explicit TRACK_INFO barriers for the setup race.

Verification: static inspection of the plans, relevant main/release code, and the referenced signals commit. No tests or relay repro executed; the reported 20/20 reproduction was not independently verified.

- An ordinary unsubscribe (subscribe, receive a group, close) whose peer
echoes the FIN without SUBSCRIBE_END ends without a ProtocolViolation.
Assert on the promise, not on a log; it fails without the fix.

P2 Badge Make the unsubscribe test observe the response rejection

With the existing mock-stream harness, the ordinary-unsubscribe test described here passes before the fix: #serveSubscribe creates closed from responses and immediately installs closed.catch(() => {}) at js/net/src/lite/subscriber.ts:764-769; after the local track closes, producer.closed wins the terminal race and the stream finishes normally, while the later #runResponses ProtocolViolation exists only on that already-handled private promise. Awaiting the track, mock FIN/cancel, or serve lifecycle therefore cannot provide the claimed failing assertion. Add a test seam that exposes/awaits responses (or another directly observable invariant), otherwise this does not land a regression test that fails without the fix.

Agreed; 2145cc6 makes the test observe the responses promise through a narrow seam and says why a closure or log assertion would pass without the fix.

Walkthrough

The PR adds two required quests to the M1 quest list. One defines expected behavior and test cases for closing a @moq/net lite subscription on main. The other documents a release backport plan, including a relay configuration and a TypeScript reproduction script that counts unhandled rejections.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2145c

The release reproduction may report no failures without reaching the TRACK_INFO wait, limiting confidence in its results. This is confined to the reproduction plan and does not change runtime behavior.

Merging. The maintainer accepted the two-quest m1 layout and its rank right after Draft-20 FETCH edge cases. No mechanical fixes were needed: the branch merges cleanly with current main, quest check passes on the result, and CI is green. The review findings are addressed. The unsubscribe test now observes the responses promise through a narrow seam (Codex), and the mock test that withholds TRACK_INFO gates the backport while the relay repro is a manual check against an unpatched 20 of 20 baseline (CodeRabbit verified f687d9d and withdrew its finding).
