Problem

The m1/quic work left moq-quic's public surface rough, per an API audit:

  • Datagrams took (data, group, order) while streams joined a group through setters after opening, so the same scheduling shape was spelled two ways, and order meant what priority means everywhere else.
  • SendDomain, SendGroups::open_domain/close_domain, and the domain argument of SendGroups::open were public with no consumer outside moq-quic's own tests.
  • SendDatagramError was not #[non_exhaustive].
  • Stale docs, and changelogs missing several unreleased breaks.

Approach

  • Send options, modeled on W3C WebTransport's WebTransportSendOptions { sendGroup, sendOrder }. A small SendOptions { group: Option<&Group>, priority: i64 } (default: ungrouped, priority 0) in moq-quic and moq-net's transport::poll. Stream creation and datagram send take it at every layer. The setters stay, since a peer-opened bidi stream joins a group through them.
  • moq-net's publishers build the options from their rank and pass them to the open, which deletes the open-then-set_group/set_priority code (Rank::place, Writer::set_group).
  • The runtime adapters (moq-tokio, moq-uring, moq-ffi, moq-wasm) apply a new stream's options through the existing setters, since their backends open through web_transport_trait.
  • Send domains are #[cfg(test)] in moq-quic; the DRR machinery and its tests stay for the track-priority-scope quest.
  • SendDatagramError is #[non_exhaustive].
  • Docs and the moq-quic README updated. The per-package MIGRATE.md guides (moq-quic, moq-net, moq-tokio, moq-uring) show the final SendOptions signatures, and moq-relay and moq-cli gain the feat(relay): widen QUIC limits for cluster peers #5674 entries they lacked; each was checked against origin/release.
  • Quest hand-off notes in drop-web-transport-trait and track-priority-scope.

Impact

No wire change. Public API (all unreleased on trunk except where noted):

  • moq-quic: new SendOptions<'a, G = SendGroup>. Streams::open(dir) is open(dir, SendOptions). Datagrams::send(data, group, order) is send(data, SendOptions). SendGroups::open(priority, domain) is open(priority). SendDomain, open_domain, close_domain are no longer public. SendDatagramError is #[non_exhaustive].
  • moq-net transport::poll (released traits change): new SendOptions<'a, G>. poll_open_uni(cx)/poll_open_bi(cx) take SendOptions, as do the open_uni/open_bi helpers. send_datagram(payload, group, order) is send_datagram(payload, SendOptions).
  • moq-tokio quic::driver (hidden): new SendOptions alias. Connection::open_uni/open_bi/send_datagram take it. quic::web::Session::open_uni/open_bi/send_datagram take it. SendDatagramError's UnsupportedByPeer/Disabled/TooLarge fold into one transparent Refused(moq_quic::SendDatagramError), so a new moq-quic variant needs no panic.
  • moq-uring quic: new SendOptions alias. Connection::send_datagram and web::Session::send_datagram take it.
  • moq-ffi, moq-wasm: internal adapters only; no binding changes.

Alternatives

  • Positional (data, priority, group), the first proposal. Superseded by the struct, which matches W3C.
  • send::Options, or a #[non_exhaustive] struct. Decided by the maintainer: keep SendOptions, exhaustive, so callers build it with a struct literal. A new field such as W3C's waitUntilAvailable would be a breaking change.
  • Erroring on a send group from another connection instead of panicking. Decided by the maintainer: keep the documented panic. It is a programmer bug (quinn-style contract, like a stream id from another connection) that moq-net never triggers, since each session opens its own groups, and it is checked before anything is allocated. An error would add variants to moq-quic's open (today an Option), set_group, both drivers' open/set_group/send_datagram, and make moq-net's infallible set_group fallible. The panic is documented at each layer.

Follow-ups

  • quest/m2/drop-web-transport-trait.md: driver drift (two send_datagrams through Deref, setter receivers, send_group receivers, Send + Sync, hidden modules), and native options on open once backends implement moq-net's traits.
  • quest/m1/track-priority-scope.md: expose domains and give send_group its domain in one trait break.

Walkthrough

The change adds SendOptions to stream-opening and datagram-sending APIs. The options carry an optional send group and an i64 priority. QUIC scheduling and transport adapters consume or forward these options, and publishers provide rank options when opening streams. Call sites, tests, benchmarks, fuzzing, and migration notes are updated for the revised APIs. Some backends ignore datagram options or drop datagrams when they lack capacity.

Comment thread doc/setup/upgrade.md Resolved

moq-quic's SendDatagramError is non_exhaustive, so the tokio driver's
wildcard would panic on a new variant. Carry it in one transparent
Refused variant, and link the upgrade note to the poll trait docs.

Merging at c44f3e9: CI green, CodeRabbit findings fixed and acknowledged, Codex +1 after the head merge of main.

The maintainer considered a Group(u64) newtype and kept the Option<&Group> handle: group priority lives on the group across idle gaps, Drop releases it, ids can't collide, a group from another connection is refused, and None is the ungrouped tier like W3C's null sendGroup. The id shape may be revisited in the quest/m1/track-priority-scope.md trait break.
