Summary

Clients take tokens as configuration separate from the URL. The first is the connection credential and rides SETUP; each other token rides its own AUTH stream and widens the grant. Finishes and deletes the quest/m1/auth/token-in-band.md quest.

moq-dev/moq#6109 and moq-dev/moq#6137 have landed, so the branch is now main plus this PR's own work. c825cb421 merges main, resolved against the #6109 head (c0b800c7a) the branch had merged, and carries the decided API changes below.

  • Wire (moq-net): lite-07-wip gains a client-only Token Setup Parameter (0x7; main gave 0x6 to Implementation) that fills server::Handshake::token, the way moq-transport's AUTHORIZATION TOKEN option already does. moq-transport clients now write that option too. Client::with_token sets it. setup::Token's Debug prints only its type and length.
  • moq-tokio: connect::Config::tokens (--connect-token, MOQ_CONNECT_TOKEN).
    • The first token rides SETUP, and the URL query too while an offered version has no SETUP token (lite before 07).
    • A URL that already carries ?jwt= keeps it as the connection credential, and then every configured token rides AUTH. No second jwt is appended, and SETUP never carries a different value.
    • Client::tokens() returns a connect::Tokens handle for refresh:
      • every dial reads the current tokens;
      • after an authorization refusal the client redials only if they changed, so a rejected credential is terminal;
      • a live AUTH session presents replacements at once, and withdraws the replaced tokens once every replacement is answered, refusals included, so the grant never narrows in between.
    • The connection holds configured tokens once on its shared auth handle, told each dial's connection credential before that dial starts its session, so a broadcast published before the dial waits on their answers. On a session that cannot send one (moq-transport without the Auth extension), Handle::add answers Answer::Requests; the handle keeps the token for a later session with AUTH, and the dial logs that once at debug.
  • moq-ffi: MoqClientConfig.tokens, and MoqClient::tokens() -> MoqTokens with set(tokens) (decision 1).
  • Wrappers: Python tokens= and client.tokens().set(...), Go ClientConfig.Tokens and client.Tokens().Set(...), Kotlin moq.tokens().set(...) (Tokens alias), Swift client.tokens().set(...) (Tokens class), Dart ConnectOptions.tokens and moq.tokens().set_(tokens: ...) (Tokens typedef; the generator renames set to set_ the way it renames dynamic to dynamic_). C++ is generated: client->tokens()->set(...). Dart's raw bindings are regenerated.
  • moq-c: moq_client_config.tokens / tokens_len, appended so a zeroed struct keeps today's behavior. The hand-written moq-c ships at this cut with binding parity (maintainer decision); a refresh call is left out, since moq-c has no auth API and closing and reconnecting replaces the tokens.
  • js/net: lite-07's Token parameter, the moq-transport AUTHORIZATION TOKEN option, a tokens connect option with the same credential rules (the WebSocket fallback's own URL decides its credential when it wins), and a reloading Connection whose token changes redial only after a refusal and swap AUTH tokens on a live session.
  • Spec: drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-lite.md specs the Token parameter (0x7) in lite-07-wip SETUP.
  • Docs: doc/bin/cli.md, doc/bin/relay/auth.md (the URL token is one member of the union), doc/concept/transport.md, and every doc/lib client page. The ?jwt= form stays documented as the way to reach an older relay.
  • Interop: the Rust client in test/interop/interop.sh moves ?jwt= to --connect-token, so it rides SETUP on the auth version. The binding clients keep the URL form, which covers the query path.
  • Quests: deletes token-in-band.md and its links from quest/m1/auth/README.md, bindings-polish.md, lite07-finalize.md, cluster-routing/identity.md, and api-audit/ietf-private.md.

Public API and wire impact

  • Wire: a new client-only lite-07-wip SETUP parameter, Token (0x7). Additive; lite-07 is still -wip. moq-transport clients now send AUTHORIZATION TOKEN in CLIENT_SETUP when configured.
  • moq-net: Client::with_token. server::Handshake::token is now also set on lite-07.
  • moq-tokio: connect::Config::tokens (the struct is #[non_exhaustive]), connect::{Token, Tokens, EmptyToken}, Client::tokens().
  • moq-ffi: MoqClientConfig.tokens (breaking for a Rust struct literal; MIGRATE.md entry added), MoqClient::tokens(), and the MoqTokens object.
  • moq-c: moq_client_config.{tokens, tokens_len}, appended (additive for a zeroed struct).
  • Wrappers and js/net: the additions above.

Decisions

All three were settled by the maintainer in this comment.

  1. Binding refresh API
    • ✅ B: a tokens handle. MoqClient::tokens() -> MoqTokens with set(tokens), mirrored in each binding and matching moq-tokio's Client::tokens(); initial tokens stay on MoqClientConfig. Replaces the earlier MoqClient::set_tokens.
    • A: a setter directly on the client.
  2. How a binding learns a token rides only requests
    • ✅ A: expose the initial presentation result, distinguishing a token the peer accepted over AUTH from one available only for request-carried authorization, through the existing add() future rather than a stored field on Auth. moq-dev/moq#6109 landed it as Handle::add -> (Auth, Answer); MoqAuth::add and the moq-tokio token holder read Answer::Requests instead of inferring support from grant() == None, which a reconnect also produces. Handle::add keeps the legacy request-token behavior.
    • B: make Handle::add require AUTH and redesign the request-token path.
  3. A refused replacement
    • ✅ A: the replacement is authoritative. Replaced tokens are withdrawn once every replacement is answered, outright refusals included. Transient refusals stay unanswered while moq-dev/moq#6109 retries them, so the old token stays presented during that wait. The application normally validates a replacement before handing it to the client. Covered by a_refused_replacement_still_withdraws_the_replaced_token.
    • B: keep the old token until it expires or a replacement is accepted.

Checks

On 71ca4c5dba (merges main at 18d4f0e185), Linux:

  • just check passes every module: Rust (including the new moq-net feature shapes), Python, Kotlin, Swift, Go, C++, OBS compile, js, Dart, drafts, markdown, quest, shell, and the rest.
  • Dart raw bindings regenerated with just dart generate in the Nix dev shell; the only change from main is MoqClientConfig.tokens and MoqTokens.
  • just test interop --all passes.

Follow-ups

  • OBS reconnects can now carry the presented token: quest/m1/auth/bindings-polish.md.

Fix the reconnect test, which shadowed its token and never compiled under
`--all-targets` with tcp; its OOM was the build on a loaded machine, not the
test (it now runs in 0.15s). Hold issued grants instead of leaking them.

Extend `a_handle_backs_one_active_session` to cover a draining session
keeping an unanswered token beside its successor, and a token added after the
drain riding only the successor.

Point the relay auth bench at `moq_net::auth`, update the relay refresh tests
for a transient refusal that now retries instead of failing `add()`, add
MIGRATE entries for moq-net and moq-tokio, and apply rustfmt.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Mirror the moq-net change in js/net. `Auth.Handle` is now a class: a
session-independent handle passed to `connect({ auth })` presents every
token it holds on each session built on it, so a route naming one of its
`Auth`s keeps it across a reconnect. A handle backs one active session at a
time, plus the ones draining after a GOAWAY; attaching another rejects with
`Auth.Duplicate`. Only the peer's verdict, or the handle's end, ends a token.

The reconnect loop owns one handle (`Reload.auth`), surfaced as
`Connection.auth`, and aborts it when the loop closes. A transiently refused
token on moq-lite is presented again after a 1s backoff doubling to 30s, as
in Rust. `Auth.None` is removed.

Update the docs that said to add the token again and re-announce after a
reconnect, and add a MIGRATE entry.

Mark the wire view's auth field internal so the declaration build no longer imports an internal type, and satisfy clippy's field_reassign_with_default in the moq-tokio reconnect test.

…sends

- `MoqSession::auth()` returns a new handle per call, each watching the grant on
  its own and starting from the grant it was made with, so concurrent watchers no
  longer steal each other's changes and `grants()` never repeats the first grant.
- `MoqAuth::add` refuses a token with `Unsupported` when the session cannot send
  it: moq-transport without the Auth extension accepts one only for the requests
  that name it, which no binding can.
- moq-tokio publishes a token's grant before `add` returns.
- OBS keeps the relay's refusal for the dock and presents a retyped token again.
- Docs: AUTH also rides moq-transport draft-17+ with the Auth extension.
- interop.sh guards empty arrays for bash 3.2; the Swift grant wait has a watchdog.

moq-net reports a clean close as Cancel, which the connection's token task surfaced as an error, so client sessions in the bindings saw Cancelled where server sessions saw success.

…notices

- moq-tokio's connection refuses a token as unsupported when its session accepts it
  without AUTH, so a reconnect between the answer and moq-ffi's check can no longer
  turn an accepted token into Unsupported.
- The OBS dock keeps why a token edit was not presented until the next one, instead
  of losing it on the next status refresh.

moq-tokio registered the configured tokens after the dial returned, but the
dial had already started its session's driver, so a broadcast published before
the dial could be judged against the connection credential's grant alone and
close the session before the token that covers it was presented. Each
candidate's tokens are now held before its dial starts; the new test fails
with the old ordering.

js/net decided the SETUP token from the primary URL even when the WebSocket
fallback, dialed at its own URL, won. A fallback URL carrying its own jwt then
sent two different credentials. The winning transport's URL now decides the
SETUP token and the tokens held on AUTH.

Both findings from the OpenAI review are fixed in 4867952:

  1. Register configured tokens before the driver starts. dial_any now holds each candidate's tokens before that candidate's dial starts its session, so the extra tokens are tokens the session presented at setup and auth::Enforce waits on their answers. a_publication_waits_for_a_configured_token dials an in-memory session with a broadcast announced before the dial that only the second token covers. It passes now and fails with the old ordering.
  2. Pick the credential from the winning fallback URL. In js/net, the WebSocket fallback's own URL now decides its credential (tokens.ts fallback): its own jwt, then the primary URL's, then the configured tokens. Whichever transport wins supplies the SETUP token and the tokens held on AUTH, so a fallback ?jwt=B with tokens: [A] sends B as the connection credential and A over AUTH. A unit test covers each case.

just check passes on the new head.

Reviewed commit: 4867952

Both findings from the previous review #6177 (review) are addressed:

  • Rust registers configured AUTH tokens before each candidate dial starts its session driver, with a regression for a pre-announced publication.
  • JavaScript derives SETUP and held AUTH tokens from the winning transport's credential, preserving a fallback URL's own jwt. Credential-selection tests cover this case.

No new actionable bugs found in the changed areas. These focused fixes preserve the shared-auth design without unnecessary machinery.

Verification: GitHub-only static inspection of the delta and relevant surrounding code. I did not execute builds, tests or interoperability checks.

Use the grant signal for lite-07 and retain the absence-of-close wait for lite-06.

This integration test uses a live loopback TCP relay, so the unit-test wall-clock rule does not apply. However, lite-07 exposes a grant through session.auth().grant(). Await that grant instead of waiting 500 ms. Keep the wall-clock check for lite-06 because older versions do not provide an AUTH grant.

The relay test awaits lite-07's AUTH grant instead of waiting out a refusal,

Addressed #6177 (review) in 206cfdd, after merging main (040906d):

  • Nitpick taken: a_configured_token_is_the_connection_credential now awaits the lite-07 AUTH grant; only lite-06, which has no AUTH answer, keeps the bounded wait for a refusal.
  • Dart doc references and the URL-token exposure note fixed; the draft (b) notation declined in its thread.

The merge adapted rs/moq-tokio/tests/integration/tokens.rs to main's Request::reject(SessionError) and kept main's MalformedAuthToken among the terminal codes in js/net's reload, still redialing when the tokens changed. just check and just test interop --all pass on 040906d.

No new actionable bugs found. The lite-07 credential regression now waits for an actual AUTH grant rather than inferring admission from a 500 ms absence of closure; retaining the old check for lite-06 is appropriate because that version has no AUTH answer. Dart API references and URL-token logging guidance match the implementation.

Both earlier findings remain fixed: configured Rust tokens precede session startup, and JavaScript uses the winning transport’s credential. The focused test improvement strengthens verification without adding runtime complexity.

Verification: static inspection of the delta after 040906d, surrounding credential test and token URL-selection logic; the preceding merge was checked against the last published review at 4867952. No builds, tests or interop checks run.

Maintainer decision (2026-10-25): the hand-written moq-c ships at this cut with parity for every m1 binding feature. So "no new libmoq API, since it gets no more feature work" no longer holds: moq-c needs the tokens config too.

Reviewed commit: 71ca4c5

No new actionable bugs found in the changes since the last published review (206cfdd), accounting for the main-branch merge.

The new C token configuration copies and validates credentials through the existing token path, with focused coverage for ordering, empty defaults and empty-token rejection. Reusing that path keeps binding parity without introducing a second authentication mechanism. The regenerated Dart bindings retain the negative-duration guard; the JS API report and async-only Rust documentation correction match the exposed APIs.

Both earlier findings remain fixed: Rust registers configured AUTH tokens before the candidate dial, and JavaScript uses the winning transport's credential.

Verification: GitHub-only static inspection of the branch-specific delta, relevant C parsing/token-validation code, regenerated bindings and the earlier fixes. No builds, tests or interoperability checks executed.

Took this over after it left the merge queue with failed_checks.

  • Queue failure: @moq/net build refused a stale js/net/api/index.api.md. main's API report check postdates this branch's ConnectProps.tokens and ConnectionProps.tokens; 0056878 records them.
  • Conflict: c3a4d36 merges main. The notable resolutions: Client::with_token now sits beside main's Client::with_url, the binding wrappers pick up main's typed durations, the lite SETUP test uses 0x1 because main dropped Token::CAT, and the quests main deleted stay deleted (api-audit/README.md loses its link to the finished quest).
  • moq-c (per the maintainer decision): f42958f adds moq_client_config.tokens / tokens_len, appended so a zeroed struct behaves as before. I left out a refresh call because moq-c has no auth API, and closing and reconnecting replaces the tokens.
  • 2a79fc4 removes an intra-doc link from Version to the async-only Client, which main's new feature-shape check flagged. 71ca4c5 regenerates the Dart raw bindings with the pinned generator.

On 71ca4c5, just check and just test interop --all pass, the gate passes, and the OpenAI review of this head found nothing new.

#6719 finishes quest/m1/congestion by deleting its README, so the app-limited estimate and test seed quests move to top-level m1. The auth entries sit below Binding auth polish, clear of #6177's edit.

Take #6177's SETUP tokens on the uni SETUP only, since the moql SETUP now
negotiates lite alone, and #6729's two-relay conformance cell on draft 18.
Drop the stale draft 14-17 notes left in js/net comments and test names.

Carry the churn and idle benchmark draft changes into the moved
benches/session/mod.rs. Two moq-tokio token tests from #6177 named drafts
14 and 17: the SETUP-credential case now offers draft 18, and the
no-AUTH case runs draft 18 against a server that offers no MoQ Auth.
