Runs the m1 interop audit over the runner's 2026-10-23 nightly and the relays page, fixes the one new bug that was ours, and schedules the m2 run.

Fix

  • Omitted IETF priority (moq-net, js/net): the drafts define an omitted DEFAULT_PUBLISHER_PRIORITY (16 on) and an omitted SUBSCRIBER_PRIORITY (15 on) as 128. Since moq-dev/moq#6142 both stacks read either as the unset 0, so moq-relay forwarded such a track or subscription at 127. Cloudflare's draft-18 moq-test client fails data-subgroup-basic through moq-relay on main with carried priority 127, expected 128. Both stacks now share one DEFAULT_WIRE (128) for both omissions and for a message that must carry a priority it was not given (our forward-0 probe); it reads as model priority -1, one step below unset, so a relay forwards it unchanged.
    • Verified: the same client against a main relay with the publisher fix no longer reports the priority. Its two remaining complaints are upstream: cloudflare/moq-rs#281 and cloudflare/moq-rs#282.
    • Tests: a draft-14 max-age-only update restates the unset priority (Rust); omitted SUBSCRIBER_PRIORITY on SUBSCRIBE (drafts 15-22, Rust and JS), FETCH (Rust), and a SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS listing whose PUBLISH restates 128 (Rust and JS); omitted DEFAULT_PUBLISHER_PRIORITY on SUBSCRIBE_OK now pins -1 (Rust and JS).

Classification

Runner 2026-10-23 nightly: 77 of 139 moq.dev cells red (clients moq-tokio 0.19.28 and @moq/net 0.4.4, docker relay moq-relay 0.17.7). Relays page 2026-10-23T09:06Z: 40 of 103 red. A cell can carry more than one cause.

The per-cell detail and what to check first are in the successor, quest/m2/audit-interop.md.

Quests

  • Moves the audit to the end of m2 Required, behind the release cut, with this run's baselines.
  • Runner client bump learns the cut's API port and that its dynamic data-subgroup-basic answer hits the accepted cold-start reset until announce takeover lands.

Public API and wire impact

  • Public API: none. DEFAULT_WIRE is crate-private in Rust and module-internal in JS; it replaces ABSENT/ABSENT_WIRE.
  • Wire: an omitted moq-transport publisher priority (and every draft-14/15 track) or subscriber priority now has model priority -1 instead of 0, so a relay forwards it at IETF 128 instead of 127 and ranks it one step below an unset local track or subscription. A message that must carry a priority it was not given sends 128 instead of 127.
  • Docs: doc/concept/standard.md states the new reading.
  • How to migrate (moved here from rs/moq-net/MIGRATE.md, which PRs no longer write since moq-dev/moq#6610): this corrects the unreleased moq-dev/moq#6142 priority note. On the wire, moq-lite carries priority + 128 and moq-transport 127 - priority, so an unset priority goes out as 128 on moq-lite (was 127) and 127 on moq-transport (was 128), and an omitted moq-transport priority is the drafts' 128, which reads as -1 (not 0). Code that matched an omitted IETF priority as 0 should expect -1.

Decisions

  1. Read an omitted IETF priority as 128. feat!: signed track priorities with a publisher tiebreak #6142 documented "an absent IETF priority is 0" for both priorities; the drafts define both omissions as 128, and reading them as 0 rewrites a forwarded priority.
    • (a) publisher priority follows the drafts, subscriber priority keeps feat!: signed track priorities with a publisher tiebreak #6142's mapping.
    • ✅ (b) read both an omitted publisher and an omitted subscriber priority as 128, as the drafts define them. (maintainer)
    • (c) drop the fix and treat the 127 as by design.
  2. Rust half of moq-dev/moq#6518. moq-dev/moq#6503 keeps the backport JS-only because released Rust passes against Cloudflare d18 and aiomoqt. Released Rust still fails subscribe-namespace-lifecycle against quic-zig and moxygen (it times out on the NAMESPACE, not NAMESPACE_DONE), and a client built on main passes.
    • ✅ No Rust backport; the runner client bump after the cut fixes it. (maintainer)
    • Backport the Rust NAMESPACE fix to release.
  3. Encode fallback for a priority a message must carry but was not given (the forward-0 probe SUBSCRIBE). Picked by the agent as the recommended option. A draft-14 SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE never takes it: the subscriber restates the priority in force there (Codex finding), so a max-age-only update no longer resets an unset subscription.
    • ✅ send 128, the same byte an omission means, so one constant covers both directions.
    • send the unset 127.

Upstream (not posted)

This run had no approval to post outside moq-dev and kixelated. Drafted for the maintainer: a runner PR bumping the moq-dev clients to moq-tokio 0.19.29 and @moq/net 0.4.5 (plus an imquic image rebuild request), and issues for cloudflare/moq-rs (draft-16 relay turns END_OF_TRACK into a Normal object), moqtail (draft-18 forwards no NAMESPACE), floatdrop/moq-go (no default port, IPv6-only dial), and openmoq/moqxr (publish an interop image).

Checks

  • Re-merged main through 0513c07369 after the queue dropped this PR on a quest README conflict: m1 lists neither the interop nor the lint audit, and m2 lists both (main moved the lint audit there too). just check (all but flake, which this sandbox cannot build) passed on the first merge; after the final merge cargo nextest run -p moq-net passes 3127, and just test interop --all passed after each merge.
  • Re-merged main through 4d29eb1ec0 after the queue dropped this PR on a conflict (quest README only); rs/moq-net/MIGRATE.md takes main's version. At the 0f986d9fdb merge: just check passes and just test interop --all passes all 172 checks (a first run lost its binaries to a build-cache cleanup mid-run). After the final merge: cargo test -p moq-net --lib ietf 992 pass, bun test src/ietf src/subscribe_priority.test.ts 870 pass, quest check ok.
  • just check on 308f67c80 (after merging main): passes (rs 8389 + 518 + 226 tests, js, quest).
  • just check on 9c25be863 (after merging main again): everything passes except three moq-uring udp tests that fail in the full parallel run with RLIMIT_MEMLOCK (8 MiB, shared by every process of this user on the host); cargo nextest run -p moq-uring alone passes 67/67. cargo test -p moq-net --lib ietf: 991 pass. quest check on d4fd42f4a: ok.
  • bun test src/ietf in js/net: 809 pass.
  • just test interop --all on 308f67c80: all 172 checks pass. A first run marked the gst client broken (moqsrc not exposed); the plugin loads with gst-inspect-1.0 and a rerun passed every lane.
  • Live (on f7c08f3fe, before the subscriber-priority change): third-party runner images (moq-go, Cloudflare d14/d18, xquic, moxygen) against a main moq-relay; the runner's Rust and JS clients ported to main against quic-zig, xquic-d18, Cloudflare d16/d18, moxygen, and MOQtail; just relays rust→rust from main against six relays.

Follow-ups

  • WebTransport draft 15 in web-transport-proto (moq-dev/web-transport): accept :protocol webtransport-h3 and send SETTINGS_WT_ENABLED, then bump here, so webtransport-go clients (moq-go) connect.
  • Trace moq-dev-js data-subgroup-basic against libquicr.

Drafts 16 on define an omitted DEFAULT_PUBLISHER_PRIORITY as 128. Since
#6142 the IETF subscriber read it as the unset 0, so a relay forwarded every
such track at 127: Cloudflare's draft-18 moq-test client fails its
data-subgroup-basic case through moq-relay on main with "carried priority
127, expected 128". Rust and JS now read the omission as 128; an absent
subscriber priority still reads as 0.

The successor records what the m1 run classified: most red cells are fixed
on main and wait for the cut, the rest are reported upstream, unsupported,
or down. The runner client bump learns the cut's API port and the
cold-start reset its data case will hit through moq-relay.

Outcome of the m1 audit run: one new bug was ours and is fixed here (omitted DEFAULT_PUBLISHER_PRIORITY forwarded as 127). Most other red cells are already fixed on main and wait for the cut. The remainder are reported upstream, drafted for approval, unsupported, or down. The m2 successor quest records the baselines. This stays a draft for the two decisions in the body. just check and just test interop --all (172 checks) pass.

The drafts define an omitted SUBSCRIBER_PRIORITY as 128, the same default as
DEFAULT_PUBLISHER_PRIORITY. #6142 read it as the unset 0, so a relay rewrote
a subscriber's omitted priority to 127 upstream. Rust and JS now share one
DEFAULT_WIRE (128) for both omissions and for a message that must carry a
priority it was not given; it reads as model priority -1, one step below
unset, so a relay forwards it unchanged.

Walkthrough

The JavaScript and Rust IETF clients now use wire value 128 for omitted subscriber and default publisher priorities, while unset priority remains wire value 127. The changes update decoding, encoding, and subscriber handling, including draft-14 update behavior, and add tests for the new defaults. The interop audit moves from the m1 plan to m2, with updated audit documentation, links, and runner-client release notes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is related to the changeset. It explains the omitted IETF priority fix (DEFAULT_WIRE 128 in moq-net and js/net), lists the tests added, and describes the wire impact and the m1/m2 quest updates. It also reports the interop audit results that drive the quest changes.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix: m1 interop audit" is vague and generic. It names the audit but not the fix. The description and objectives show the main code change is the omitted IETF priority fix (DEFAULT_WIRE = 128 replacing ABSENT_WIRE). The title does not describe the code change, so a teammate scanning history would not learn the primary change.

Resolution

Rename the PR to name the code change, for example: "fix: read omitted IETF priority as 128". Keep the audit reference out of the title if the code change is the main point.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 72.22% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 18 functions across 18 files. (2 skipped: 1 unsupported, 1 too large.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Draft-14's SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE carries a mandatory priority, so an update for
the max age alone wrote the omission default 128 and reset an unset
subscription from 127. It now restates the priority in force.

Merge summary: finishes the m1 interop audit and schedules the m2 run. An omitted IETF publisher or subscriber priority now reads as the drafts' 128 in Rust and JS (maintainer chose option b), so a relay forwards it unchanged. A draft-14 SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE now restates the priority in force (Codex finding), and two stale texts are fixed (CodeRabbit, Codex). No Rust backport of #6518 (maintainer). CI is green on d60dd82. just check passes except moq-uring tests that hit the host's shared RLIMIT_MEMLOCK under parallel load; they pass when run alone. quest check passes against the current main.

Merge update: merged main three times as it moved. The quest READMEs conflicted each time; I kept main's new entries and left the interop audit last in m2 Required. moq-dev/moq#6539 changed Subscriber::new to take a Transport, so the new draft-14 max-age test now wraps its scripted session the same way the other tests do. moq-dev/moq#6257 finished the runner-nightly quest and reworded the m1 audit's registry-sync step. That rewording now lives in the m2 successor, its link to the deleted quest is gone, and both m1 files stay deleted. Review threads were already resolved, and Codex gave a thumbs-up on the final head.

Checks on 34ee753: just check passes (rs 8414 + 523 + 226 tests, js, quest). just test interop --all: all checks pass. quest check --base origin/main: ok. Earlier interop runs on intermediate heads each hit one js-native-node audio timestamp-gap failure (once from rust, once from go), which is the flake tracked in quest/m1/test-flakes-2/interop-timestamp-gap.md. Both lanes passed on rerun.
