bench(relay): measure admitted sessions over memory - #6681
The in-memory session benchmark models relay origins but bypasses relay admission, auth, cluster scoping, and stats. Relay-layer costs therefore do not appear beside the model's existing publisher/subscriber and dash sweeps.
Approach
Share the existing scenarios and delivery accounting behind a benchmark-only backend. The new relay target serves each memory link with Accepted and Connection, embedded auth, a real cluster origin, and enabled stats. The original model keeps its benchmark names; relay results add relay_. Both sweep the same publisher/viewer axes and verify complete payload delivery, including constrained stream credit and blocked writes. Run the new target in its own measured Nightly leg.
Fixture choices:
Ordinary publishers/viewers retain ordinary grants. The dash viewer has a peer grant to discover hidden stats paths on older protocols; mesh links also use peer grants. Fixed embedded grants avoid retaining obsolete admission handles across repeated joins.
The benchmark uses the existing peer announcement limit for ordinary-client announcement capacity so large broadcast sweeps measure routing rather than hitting admission caps. Production defaults do not change.
Idle remains model-only because its measurement reads the server Session handle. The relay seam intentionally owns that handle internally; no new production export was added to expose it.
Validation
Dash ran first, including the full 35-relay / 5-project / 24-track shape on lite-06 and transport-22. All 362 relay cases and 389 model cases pass in Criterion test mode.
Explicit Clippy for both session targets passes with warnings denied. Selected Rust compile/clippy/test matrix passed 9,984 default tests, 524 additional feature tests, and 240 CLI tests. Workflow lint and repository tooling tests pass.
just ci is blocked locally by the unchanged Nix VM-image builder: unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map: Operation not permitted. Affected checks run independently pass; no workaround changes are included.
Sequential quick measurements using the existing Nightly settings, at 4,080 tracks per tick:
Protocol
Model
Relay
moq-lite-06
208.03 ms
275.96 ms
moq-transport-22
208.50 ms
290.74 ms
These are observations on a busy shared host, without CPU pinning. They establish runnable measurements, not an acceptance bound or a production CPU claim. Both targets use memory transport, so this does not measure QUIC or kernel costs.
Impact
Benchmark sources, a dev dependency on the existing workspace kio version, tooling, workflow, and completed quest removal only.
No supported production build/runtime behavior, feature contract, public API, wire, package version, or production export changes.
Alternatives
Sharing scenarios keeps the axes and byte accounting aligned without duplicating a second harness or changing production APIs to reach benchmark internals.

Walkthrough
The model session benchmark implementation moves into a shared suite that defines delivery, join, stats, churn, idle, and withdrawal scenarios. A new relay benchmark target runs shared scenarios through relay connections. The Nightly workflow runs and reports the relay benchmark. Benchmark documentation adds relay commands and settings, and removes the earlier relay benchmark plan.
Priority: Low
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to f438f
This adds a relay-level session benchmark and includes it in Nightly reporting, without touching production runtime behavior. No actionable merge-blocking risk is identified from the supplied evidence.

Explanation
The title "bench(relay): measure admitted sessions over memory" matches the main change. The PR adds a relay-layer session benchmark that runs over an in-memory transport with relay admission, so the title names the primary change. It is short, specific, and follows conventional commit style.

Landing. Took over a stale merge hold from a stopped agent. Merged main: kept this PR's split of benches/session.rs and ported main's origin::Publication field types from #6464 into session/mod.rs; dropped two quest links whose files are gone. Clippy, fmt, moq-net + moq-relay tests (3574 passed), the gh module, and quest check pass; the local flake module cannot build its runner image here (unshare). Codex found nothing on a05df54 and the CodeRabbit finding was fixed in 6955fd5.
No actionable bugs found. Sharing scenarios and delivery assertions behind a benchmark-only backend is a reasonable way to compare the model with admitted relay connections without adding production APIs. The separate Nightly leg and documented peer/announcement-limit exceptions keep the comparison understandable.
The existing path-only kio dependency finding #6681 (comment) is fixed; no duplicate finding.
Verification: static comparison against the current base, inspection of the shared harness, relay admission/cache/stats integration, and Nightly runner including absent-base-target handling. No tests or benchmarks run; memory-transport measurements do not establish QUIC/kernel performance.
Ports main's fetch_range bench (#6724) into the shared session
module and registers it on both backends. The relay bench now names its
peer target with Client::with_url (#6749) and enables moq-net's
fuzz module, which the shared FETCH path needs.

Use a path-only internal benchmark dependency
This internal dev-dependency inherits the workspace's version requirement, so packaging retains a registry dependency with the benchmark-only fuzz feature instead of omitting the local development dependency. rs/AGENTS.md explicitly requires internal dev-dependencies to be path-only so releases can publish. Use path = "../moq-net" with the existing feature selection, matching the adjacent internal dev-dependencies.
Compared with the last published review at 9604f02, accounting for main integration: no new actionable bugs found. Sharing the new FETCH-range scenario across model and relay backends preserves the intended comparison; the range-fill guard, delivery assertions, registration and required fuzz feature are consistent. The peer URL adaptation preserves the admission target.
The independently reported moq-net dev-dependency issue is now fixed: #6681 (comment). The latest commit makes it path-only while retaining fuzz; no duplicate inline finding.
Verification: static inspection of the shared scenario, relay integration, URL handling and manifest delta. No tests or benchmarks run; no performance conclusion.
