fix(net): a lowered resume floor backfills from the serving route - #6759
Lowering a resumed (front) reader's floor with with_range / withRange now offers the groups below the old floor that the reader never read, as a direct reader does.
Before, a new route's copy is subscribed from the newest group handed out, and Copy::start clamps the local floor to that resume point. So once the replaced copy that cached the lower groups was let go, a lowered floor offered nothing below the resume point, even when the serving copy cached them.
Now a lowering adds a backfill: another copy of the newest route, asked for just the groups the floor newly covers (lowered start .. min(old floor, resume point), within the reader's ranges). It is bounded and kept like a replaced copy, so it goes once nothing under its bound is unread or may still land within the reader's budget. It is skipped when the reader's delivered record already covers the window (an ordered reader, or one past its budget), and a floor lowered again does not ask twice.
Supporting changes:
A route can now back two copies of one reader, so a peeked candidate names its copy by lease instead of generation (which also drops the generation retarget on a route flap), and the route's own copy is found newest-first (flap-back reuse, Recover::adopt, JS copy(generation)).
A backfill never bounds the copies it replaced (observe skips replaced copies).
Rust (rs/moq-net/src/model/resume.rs) and JS (js/net/src/resume.ts) mirror each other. Both get a two-copy test: switch routes with a high floor, let the old copy go, lower the floor, and expect the groups only it cached, whether the serving route caches them or gets them once asked; an ordered reader asks for nothing.
Closes the quest quest/m1/resume-floor.md (deleted here).
Choices made
The quest's recommended option: ask the serving route on demand once the floor drops, rather than keeping replaced copies alive for a lowering that may never come.
"Ask" is a bounded subscription of the newest route (one wire request range, aggregated into that route's demand), not per-group fetches: the lowered window is caller-sized and may be huge, and a subscription returns only what the route has.
Groups between the old floor and the resume point stay unowed from the new copy, as before: only the window the floor newly covers is asked for.
Impact
Public API: behavior only. with_range / withRange docs note the one exception to "a local filter": on a track served across route changes, lowering the floor asks the serving route again for the newly covered groups within the subscription's ranges.
Wire: no format change. A front reader that lowers its floor now widens the serving route's subscription for that window.
Checks
just check: pass (rs + js).
just test interop not run: no wire format or FFI change.

A lowered resume floor re-offers a released copy's groups
fix(net): a lowered resume floor backfills from the serving route
Oct 25, 2026
The JavaScript and Rust readers now request bounded backfills from the newest route when an unordered resumed reader lowers its floor. They skip intervals already covered by delivered groups or an existing same-route copy. Tests cover cached and uncached groups, ordered and arrival-order reads, and repeated floor changes. Documentation describes the route-change behavior. The m1 quest entry and planning document were removed.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 0b689
Readers can miss newly requested groups when the serving route changes during a floor update. Preserve those requests for the replacement route before merging.

No actionable bugs found. The bounded, on-demand backfill is a reasonable alternative to retaining retired route subscriptions indefinitely. Keeping the serving copy last and identifying Rust candidates by lease correctly accommodates multiple subscriptions to the same route. The added cases cover cached and delayed backfill, repeated floor changes, and ordered-reader non-rewind behavior.
Verification limits: static review of the diff and surrounding JS/Rust resume, retention, and delivered-range logic. Tests were inspected, not run.
No actionable bugs found in this update. The independent simulated-time finding #6759 (comment) is fixed: the lowered-floor test now uses a manual clock, drains queued work without advancing time, and restores the clock during cleanup. This follows the existing test pattern without weakening its assertions or changing production behavior.
Verification: static review of the test delta since the previous equivalent main merge, surrounding helpers and manual-clock implementation, accounting for base changes since the last published review. Tests were inspected, not run.
Merged main after moq-dev/moq#6758 landed. The only textual conflict was quest/m1/README.md (both quests are now gone); resume.rs and resume.ts auto-merged, and the backfill sits before the serving copy, so 6758's drop reporting still reads verdicts from the route's own copy. The new lowered-floor JS test now runs on a Manual clock (Codex thread).
Known gap from combining the two, left as a follow-up: drop verdicts that a backfill copy receives (a SUBSCRIBE_DROP for a group in the lowered window) are not reported to a reader asking for dispositions, in either language, since only the serving copy's verdicts are read.
just check (rs, js, markdown, quest) and quest check --base origin/main pass; Codex and the OpenAI review cover 0b68937. Landing.

Defer lowered-floor backfill until a serving route exists.
Route.park() clears the route source but retains each reader copy. If withRange lowers the floor while the front is parked, #backfill() sends the request to the departed copy from #copies.at(-1). The next serving copy starts at #newest, so the newly covered interval is not requested again if the departed copy cannot serve it.
Keep the uncovered interval pending while no route serves, then request it from the new serving route during sync().

Defer lowered intervals until a serving copy exists.
If the current serving route fails, Reader::sync can observe route.copy == None and leave the failed route's copy as self.copies.last(). A subsequent with_range lowering therefore calls backfill on that departed copy. When the next route is spliced, its subscription starts at self.newest, so it does not request the newly covered interval. The reader can miss groups that only the new route still has.
Keep the lowered interval pending while no current serving copy exists. Apply it through backfill when sync attaches the next serving route, then clear the pending interval after it is covered. The unused-reader park path is not the trigger: Action::Park follows Event::Unused, which means that the last reader has left.

Summary
Lowering a resumed (front) reader's floor with
with_range/withRangenow offers the groups below the old floor that the reader never read, as a direct reader does. Before, a new route's copy is subscribed from the newest group handed out, and
Copy::startclamps the local floor to that resume point. So once the replaced copy that cached the lower groups was let go, a lowered floor offered nothing below the resume point, even when the serving copy cached them. Now a lowering adds a backfill: another copy of the newest route, asked for just the groups the floor newly covers (
lowered start .. min(old floor, resume point), within the reader's ranges). It is bounded and kept like a replaced copy, so it goes once nothing under its bound is unread or may still land within the reader's budget. It is skipped when the reader's delivered record already covers the window (an ordered reader, or one past its budget), and a floor lowered again does not ask twice.Supporting changes:
