test(obs): wait for the rejected candidate to retire - #6829
The OBS candidate test could observe a new pending attempt from a later catalog snapshot after the malformed attempt had already failed and retired. Its shared failure counter and assertion that no candidate remained turned correct continued playback into a Nightly failure.
Watch the captured attempt through a weak Track reference, require a failure for its media role and its retirement, and verify the original active Track still produces output. Apply the same oracle to both video refusal cases sharing the counter. Production behavior is unchanged.
Impact: no public API or wire changes.
Validation: reproduced the original assertion under real ThreadSanitizer; the corrected focused scenario passed 200 repetitions and another 200 with 2,643 SIGSTOP/SIGCONT pauses. The complete standard just obs test TSan suite passed on the refreshed base. Negative controls fail when the rejected attempt remains selected or is canceled before a different attempt processes the malformed data. just ci, quest check --base origin/main, and git diff --check passed.
Alternatives: requiring every future candidate to disappear couples the test to catalog scheduling; capturing the attempt verifies the intended invariant without changing catalog updates or playback.
Wait for the selected candidate failure while its weak handle is still alive, then verify that attempt retired and the original active track continues playback. A new catalog-created attempt no longer makes the assertion racy.

Walkthrough
The OBS test logger now associates relevant failure messages with a watched track candidate. Audio and video tests verify that failed candidates expire while the active tracks remain installed. The nightly checklist entry and the candidate investigation note were removed.

Explanation
The title "test(obs): wait for the rejected candidate to retire" matches the main change. The PR changes the OBS moq-source test so it captures the rejected candidate through a weak Track reference, requires a failure for that candidate's media role and retirement, and checks that the original active track still produces output. The title names the test scope and the core behavior. It does not name the replacement of the shared failure counter, but it is specific enough for a reviewer scanning history.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description explains the problem: a later catalog snapshot can expose a new pending attempt after the malformed attempt has failed and retired, which turns a shared failure counter and a no-candidates assertion into a false Nightly failure. It then describes the fix (weak Track reference, role-specific failure and retirement checks, active-track verification, same oracle for both video refusal cases), states that production behavior is unchanged, and lists validation runs. This matches the changeset, which touches the OBS test and the Nightly README.

No actionable bugs found in the changed test oracle. Tracking the captured attempt weakly, requiring a matching-role failure and retirement, then checking the original active Track and continued output is a better invariant than requiring all future candidates to disappear. The lock ordering and failure-log sites match the surrounding implementation; the added bookkeeping is justified and avoids production hooks or timing-based retries.
No prior review findings to reconcile. Verification: static inspection of the diff, test harness, subscription/audio callbacks and logging macros only; I did not run OBS tests, TSan or the reported stress/negative-control checks.
Merged main into the branch to resolve a quest-only conflict in quest/m0/nightly/README.md: main had removed the windows-relay-expect quest and added net-async-free, while this PR removes obs-audio-candidate. The resolution keeps net-async-free and drops both finished quests. No cpp/ changes landed on main since the reviewed head, so Codex's clean review of 812cb6b still covers the test change. quest check passes; queuing for squash merge.

No new actionable bugs found in the substantive update since my previous review (excluding the main-branch merge). The bounded CHECK(WaitFor(...)) at cpp/obs/test/moq-source-test.cpp:1235–1238 addresses CodeRabbit's unbounded-wait finding: the existing helper returns false after its 10-second deadline, and CHECK records failure instead of hanging on a missing log. The mutex still protects the predicate, and the following source-lock/retirement checks remain intact. Reusing that helper and removing the unused condition variable is the simpler, appropriate direction.
Verification: static inspection of the delta, surrounding assertions and WaitFor implementation only; I did not run tests or TSan.
Addressed CodeRabbit's unbounded-wait finding in 3694ca3: the video candidate failure wait now uses the bounded CHECK(WaitFor(...)) like every other wait in the file, and the condition variable it no longer needs is gone. just obs test and just obs check pass locally, Codex reviewed the new head with no findings, and CodeRabbit resolved the thread. Re-queuing.
Requeue after merge_conflict: merged origin/main into the branch (no rebase). The only conflict was quest/m0/nightly/README.md's Required list, where main added the send-overflow and py-sdist entries next to the OBS audio-candidate entry this PR deletes. Kept main's new entries and dropped this PR's finished quest. The test change itself merged cleanly, since main did not touch cpp/obs. just check and quest check --base origin/main passed, and Codex approved the new head with a thumbs-up. No decisions remain.
Merged origin/main into the branch after the queue run stopped on merge_conflict. The only conflict was the Required list in quest/m0/nightly/README.md: main had removed the landed py-sdist and net-async-free entries, and this PR removes obs-audio-candidate, so the resolution keeps none of the three. moq-dev/moq#6745 had renamed the audio read API in the same test file; it auto-merged cleanly and the log strings this test's oracle matches are unchanged.
Validation on 5803fde5a8: just check, just obs test (ThreadSanitizer suite), and quest check --base origin/main passed; Codex found no issues on this head.
