Problem

Installing the Python sdist fails during Cargo metadata because disabled optional path dependencies, including moq-ice, are absent. A hand-maintained crate list regresses whenever another optional workspace dependency is added.

Approach

Include the Rust workspace in the sdist, excluding native build output and the existing test corpora/cache exclusions. Keep the nightly wheel-from-sdist build and add installation plus an import from outside the source package. Delete the completed quest and its parent link.

Stacked on #6798; this PR targets its planning branch while it remains open.

Impact

  • Public API and wire: none.
  • The local compressed sdist grows from 6.8 MiB to 8.5 MiB.

Alternatives

Chose workspace source coverage over another per-crate exception or a custom dependency-packaging backend. The existing nightly lane checks the real source install before release; no extra merge-gate native build was added.

Validation

  • Reproduced the missing rs/moq-ice/Cargo.toml failure with pip wheel on the original sdist.
  • Corrected sdist builds, includes moq-ice and the generator, excludes build/cache directories, and passes pip metadata preparation.
  • Workflow lint and recipe checks, quest validation, and repository tooling tests pass.
  • A wheel built from the sdist installs and imports successfully in a clean Python 3.12 environment outside the source directory.
  • just ci origin/claude/quest-audit-planning-700add passes, including Python lint/formatting, editable build, type checking, documentation samples/rendering, all 105 Python tests, repository tooling, workflow checks, and quest validation.

Follow-ups

None.

Seven parallel audits checked every quest against main and open PRs.
Stale plans, broken references, and missing links are corrected, and the
maintainer's answers to the open planning decisions are recorded.

New quests: resume checked against a model, transport frame offsets,
demand is wanted everywhere, and two Nightly fixes. The generated C line
moves to m2; the hand-written moq-c ships at the cut with parity.
rs/moq-net/AGENTS.md drops the partial-groups rule, as the maintainer asked.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 519950e

No actionable bugs found in the changed packaging configuration and sdist installation check. Including the Rust sources is a simpler, more maintainable approach than extending a per-crate exception list; retaining build-output exclusions limits the trade-off. Building a wheel from the archive, installing it, and importing outside the source package exercises the relevant consumer path, and the existing nightly/release workflow retains that check.

Verification: static GitHub inspection of the diff, workspace/FFI/generator manifests, Python import path, and release/nightly workflows only. I did not build an sdist, run tests, or independently verify the reported local results.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a release-workflow check that imports moq_ffi from a wheel built from the source distribution. It broadens the Rust files included in source distributions and excludes target directories. The remaining changes revise CI, release, API, protocol, performance, and roadmap plans across m0, m1, m2, and m3 quest documentation.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · up to 51995

The packaging fix and its new import check look safe to merge. The remaining items are planning-document gaps. The E2EE resume-allocation and fed-WebRTC empty-candidate plans should be clarified before implementation starts, but they do not block merging these documents.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(py): include optional workspace dependencies in sdist" matches the main change. The raw summary shows pyproject.toml now packages all of rs/**/* in the Maturin sdist and excludes /target/, which addresses missing optional workspace dependencies such as moq-ice. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the problem (sdist install fails during Cargo metadata because optional path dependencies such as moq-ice are missing), the approach (include the Rust workspace in the sdist with existing exclusions, plus a wheel-from-sdist install and import check), and validation steps. This matches the file changes in pyproject.toml and .github/workflows/release-py-ffi.yml, and it also covers the quest document removals.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (106 skipped: 106 unsupported.)

Align this decision with the E2EE body budget.

The 1200-byte limit is the datagram body cap. E2EE reserves 24 bytes for the widest header and 16 bytes for the AEAD tag, so its maximum plaintext is 1160 bytes. Clarify this in the decision instead of implying that E2EE accepts 1200-byte plaintext. Existing boundary tests already cover the limit.

Suggested clarification
-[E2EE](/quest/m2/e2ee/README.md) sizes its plaintext on the 1200 cap.
+[E2EE](/quest/m2/e2ee/README.md) uses a 1160-byte plaintext cap
+(`1200 - 24 - 16`) so the protected datagram remains within the
+1200-byte body cap.

Align the FETCH codec scope with the draft cut.

The repository supports only moq-transport drafts 18 and 22. This plan still requires FetchOk and FetchFrame behavior and tests for drafts 14–17. Remove those requirements, or document a separate JavaScript legacy matrix and its dependency.

sequence (`replacement_refuses_reused_sequences`). Decided 2026-10-25
(maintainer): resume always. The claim keeps the name's high-water marks
across every broadcast of the generation, and a re-served or re-created
name resumes above them, `create_track` included. This replaces the
2026-10-17 refusal, under which `create_track` returns `Error::Reuse` for
a name the generation already claimed (`generation.rs` `claim`). Reason:
resuming keeps every `(group, frame)` identity unique without releasing the
claim, so nonces never repeat, and an on-demand handler can drop an idle
track and serve it again. An explicit sequence at or below a high-water
mark is still refused. Test a dropped and re-served name and a re-created
track resuming above their marks.

Define atomic allocation for resumed track names.

When create_track recreates a claimed name while its previous producer remains live, both producers can select the same next (group, frame) identity. Persisting high-water marks is not sufficient. Define whether overlapping producers are rejected or the old producer is closed, or require one shared serialized allocator and an overlap test.

Update create_track and the generation claim/high-water-mark handling so
recreating a claimed name while its previous producer is live cannot allocate
duplicate (group, frame) identities. Enforce exclusive ownership by rejecting or
closing the prior producer, or serialize allocations through a shared allocator;
add an overlap test that verifies the chosen policy.

Qualify the opening headless-group decision.

The opening sentence can be read as dropping every mid-group stream without a head. The later plan preserves subscriptions that never requested a fill. Limit the decision to cases where a requested fill or joining FETCH does not supply the head.

Preserve non-empty ICE candidates in fed mode.

moq_ice::Socket::new rejects empty candidates. The bound mux currently falls back to its local address when ice_candidates is empty. The fed plan maps advertised directly to ice_candidates, but the fed mux has no bind step. An empty configuration can therefore fail fed session construction. Reject empty candidates in fed mode or derive a fallback from the shared socket, and test the empty-input path.

Define the pacer time contract before planning SCM_TXTIME.

moq_congestion::Controller exposes pacing metrics, but it does not expose an absolute next-send timestamp. Define how SCM_TXTIME obtains the train release time from the pacer, or add a typed timestamp API before depending on it.

Merged main into the branch after moq-dev/moq#6798 landed (f47612c). Every quest conflict resolves to what landed in #6798, so the diff against main is again only this PR's own change: the sdist include/exclude in pyproject.toml, the install-and-import step in release-py-ffi.yml, and deleting quest/m0/nightly/py-sdist.md with its parent link.

The eight CodeRabbit threads target quest files from the #6798 planning branch, which showed up here only while this PR diffed against main before the merge. Those files are no longer in this PR's diff, so they are out of scope here; any that still apply belong to a quest audit against main.

Checks: quest check --base origin/main and just check pass locally; Codex reviewed the merge head with no findings.
