quest: plan the studio's MoQ-native and OBS-polish backlog - #6876
The studio epic covered the OBS-parity basics but not what makes a MoQ-native studio different (per-track delivery, viewer composition, relay failover, replay from held groups), nor the polish creators expect from OBS (undo, transitions, effects, snapping, guided setup, per-app audio).
Approach
Plans the backlog as quests, with each decision and its reason recorded in the quest's Plan (decided with the maintainer on 2026-10-26).
New under the studio epic (quest/m3/studio/):
Viewer-side composition (epic compose/): each source publishes as its own track plus a layout track (hang JSON on the media clock); moq-scene composes it in the browser (@moq/watch), headless on a server (moq compose), and in the studio, with one parity rule across the three hosts. Children: source tracks, layout track, browser composition, server composition, viewer controls.
[L] Undo and the scene model: persistent undo history, linked vs cloned sources, copy and paste, a downstream keyer, per-item filters.
[L] Live encode control: simulcast rungs that follow the bandwidth grant, live bitrate and resolution changes, keyframes on request.
[M] Relay failover: the same epoch on two relays, so a relay failure does not drop the stream.
[M] Instant replay and DVR: replays and clips from held groups; viewer scrubbing through the archive.
[L] HTML/CSS overlays: script-free HTML and CSS through Blitz natively and the DOM in the browser.
[M] Animation and transitions, [M] Video effects, [S] Snapping and guides, [M] Guided setup.
Extended:
Audio filters gain ducking and out-of-process VST3/CLAP hosting; mixes gain clap/flash sync measurement and per-guest mix-minus.
Per-app audio: a new [S] macOS quest (ScreenCaptureKit), folded into the Linux (PipeWire nodes) and Windows (WASAPI process loopback) capture parity quests.
Merged main after moq-dev/moq#6839 landed, so the links to its autosave and scene-editing quests resolve. In the studio's Required, viewer composition stays first (its recorded decision) and the scene model second (its Plan lands it right after composition, before features build on the model); moq-dev/moq#6839's autosave, scene editing, broadcast sync, and Wayland sources follow, then the rest of this backlog. Reorder if you rank them differently.
Impact
Quest files only; no API or wire change.
Alternatives
Keeping the studio a composited-program-only publisher like OBS. Declined: per-track delivery is MoQ's advantage, so the program becomes the fallback for protocols and players that cannot compose.
Adds the viewer-side composition epic (source tracks, a layout track, and
browser, server, and studio hosts), the scene model and undo, live encode
control, health, failover, replay, HTML/CSS overlays through Blitz,
animation, effects, snapping, and guided setup. Folds per-app audio into the
capture quests and extends mixes and audio filters.

[P2] Reconcile replay availability with on-demand encoding — quest/m3/studio/replay.md:12-15 assumes recent groups are already on hand for the goal of replaying any source or the program. But compose/sources.md:7-12 and compose/README.md:39-41 deliberately stop encoding unsubscribed tracks, including the unused fallback program. For example, when all viewers compose sources themselves, the program has no encoded history to replay; a source toggled off by every viewer has the same gap. Retention or a later time-range subscription cannot recover frames never encoded. Either scope replay to available retained coverage and expose gaps, or explicitly arm a local replay subscriber with a retention window and account for its ongoing encode cost. Include the no-external-subscriber case in the replay acceptance criteria.
Overall direction: reusing one scene model/compositor and existing subscription machinery is a sensible way to avoid host-specific implementations. Keeping replay as a normal local consumer would preserve that direction rather than introducing a separate recording pipeline.
Verification limits: static review of the quest diff, protocol documentation and encoder demand behavior only. No builds, tests, hardware probes or compositor-parity checks were run; this PR changes plans, not runtime implementation.
Fixed the replay finding in the latest commit: replay is armed per source or program as a local subscriber with a retention window, so an armed track keeps encoding with no external subscriber and its cost shows like any subscriber's. An unarmed track replays only what was encoded and shows the gaps. Acceptance now covers the case where nothing outside the studio subscribes to the program.
The previous replay-coverage P2 is fixed in the plan (quest/m3/studio/replay.md:17-25): arming replay creates a local subscriber with retention and visible encode cost; unarmed tracks expose missing coverage; acceptance explicitly includes an unsubscribed fallback program. This keeps the simpler existing pull-model design rather than adding a separate recorder. No new actionable bugs found in the delta from c8bcc62; the base is unchanged.
Verification limits: static review of the plan change and surrounding demand/retention contracts only. No builds, tests or runtime replay checks were run.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds plans for per-app audio capture on Linux, Windows, and macOS. It also adds studio documentation for scene editing, viewer-side and server-side composition, audio processing, and stream operations. These documents describe proposed approaches and requirements; they do not implement the documented capture or studio features.
Priority: Pending latest changes
Merge Risk: Low · up to c8bcc
This PR only adds planning documents, so nothing ships that can break at runtime. A few plans leave design gaps that should be tightened before implementation starts, such as shared-track subscription handling, plugin hang handling, and overlay asset enforcement.

Define the provenance of each health metric.
The stats contract joins publisher and viewer snapshots by catalog rendition ID. State that join in the Plan. Also map bandwidth granted to a defined field and aggregation rule, or remove it. The contract exposes target bitrate and transport rate gauges, not a field named “bandwidth granted.”
Narrow end-to-end latency to viewer-reported stages or mark it unavailable. The latency ledger states that no clock currently spans the publisher-to-viewer path, so end-to-end latency remains null.

Specify the layout-track handoff in the browser plan.
The goal names the layout track, but the plan specifies only VideoFrame delivery. Define how the browser decodes Hang JSON snapshots, resolves source and contribution references, and applies updates on the shared media clock. Include these inputs in the parity fixture.

Reviewed the substantive plan updates since 685ae7e; base unchanged. The earlier replay-coverage finding remains fixed. Shared-track demand aggregation, source-scoped ML effects, nonblocking plugin failure handling, and browser-enforced overlay isolation make the direction clearer without adding parallel mechanisms.
Existing P2 still partly open, not a new finding:CodeRabbit's failover prerequisite comment. quest/m3/studio/failover.md:15-17 now requires epoch support, but not matching protocol/draft across links. Two relays can both support epochs yet negotiate different moq-transport drafts; doc/concept/moq-lite.md (Multiple CDNs) explicitly says differing copied track info is refused and ends the track. Require compatible protocol/draft negotiation at setup as well, or explicitly narrow the seamless-failover guarantee. Referencing the existing thread instead of duplicating an inline comment.
No additional new actionable findings in this delta. Verification limits: static review of the revised plans, existing review threads and repository contracts only; no builds, tests, platform probes or failover experiments run.
The remaining failover prerequisite finding is now fixed in quest/m3/studio/failover.md:15-18: both links must negotiate the same protocol/draft with publisher epochs, and mismatches are refused at setup. This matches the documented track-info constraint while preserving the simple encode-once design. No new actionable findings in the one-file delta from d6a9e56; base unchanged.
Verification limits: static plan/contract review only. No builds, tests or live failover checks were run.
Landing summary: merged main after moq-dev/moq#6839 so its autosave and scene-editing links resolve, and ranked its four studio quests right after viewer composition and the scene model. Review rounds fixed replay coverage (replay is armed as a local subscriber), shared-track subscriptions, source-scoped ML effects, plugin-host deadlines, browser overlay sandboxing, persisted undo history, uplink probing, per-app audio selection on all three platforms, and same-draft failover links. Codex had no findings on d6a9e56; the final one-file change was reviewed clean.
