Problem

A moq-transport datagram with Object ID greater than zero could become a plain payload at the same group sequence on an untyped lite hop or through Rust's plain datagram reader. With arrivals [1, 2, 0], the complete untyped hop reproduced delivering object 1 in place of object 0.

Approach

Drop nonzero Object IDs at the two boundaries that cannot identify them: the plain Rust reader and lite publishing without the negotiated ietf extension. Log the new per-hop drops and reject unrepresentable payloads before egress metering, leaving the existing status, oversized-datagram and congestion-attempt policies unchanged. Keep ingestion and typed IETF/extension forwarding unchanged, and correct the existing datagram/range docs.

Consumers are applications using recv_datagram and viewers behind a lite hop without ietf. A rejected object never refuses the track: following ordinary datagrams and stream groups keep flowing.

Impact

  • Public API: unchanged. No Object ID field, new statistic, or new track refusal.
  • Wire format: unchanged. Untyped surfaces now deliver only normal object 0; typed IETF and negotiated lite forwarding retain IDs and metadata.
  • Existing egress counters exclude newly dropped nonzero payload objects; no counter or schema is added.
  • JavaScript already drops nonzero IETF datagram objects and needs no change.

Alternatives

The settled Plan rejects dropping nonzero objects at ingress, which would remove existing typed passthrough, and rejects refusing the track. No new policy or API choice was made.

Validation

  • Before production edits, deterministic tests reproduced both failures: the plain reader exposed object 1, and the full memory-session lite hop substituted object 1 for object 0 arriving last. An initial test-only assertion compilation error was corrected before those source failures were measured.
  • Plain-reader controls cover objects 0..2, 0 last and 0 absent, polling after each arrival. A parallel typed cursor retains each exact object and metadata; a later ordinary datagram and clean end remain readable.
  • The complete lite memory-session test covers all four extension-offer combinations × those three arrival orders, inspecting the stored wire form rather than the plain reader. It verifies metadata/order when negotiated, only object 0 otherwise, and a following plain datagram and ordered stream group. This exercises SETUP negotiation, subscription, actual encoded datagram transport and decoding with deterministic event barriers.
  • Existing IETF dispatch/relay passthrough and Object ID range controls pass. The range control now declares ietf on lite-07, preserving its nonzero-object bound assertions at a surface that can carry them.
  • A tagged Publisher Registry reproduced two unsupported objects counting as two datagrams / 14 bytes despite never being sent. The ID guard now runs before metering. Controls check nonzero-only and object-0 streams on typed/untyped hops, exact bytes/datagrams/groups/frames, and preserved status/oversize-attempt accounting.
  • Focused source/protocol controls passed. A first strict gate exposed a resume fixture that expected object 4 through the plain reader; the subsequent audit and full net run identified two ingress fixtures with the same stale expectation. They now preserve typed ID/payload positives and plain-reader negative/object-0 positives. Alias/status filtering, malformed-input rejection and the exact contradictory-end ProtocolViolation controls remain. No case or assertion was retired.
  • Full moq-net suite: 3,263 passed, 12 skipped after those fixture corrections, using the normal runner and --no-fail-fast to collect every case rather than repeatedly stop at the next stale fixture. just fix origin/main, diff formatting and trusted quest check (614 documents) passed.
  • Full just test interop --all passed at production head afc237ffb247, including browser/native language media, refusal, datagram, compression and drop controls. Final head 1ff9b76104f8 changes only the three existing fixtures inside cfg(test) modules afterward, including a valid END_OF_TRACK at group 10 after the last payload at group 9; production source is identical. Final clean-head nix develop --command just ci origin/main passed: 9,133 selected tests / 97 skips, plus 1,291 no-default-feature model tests and the remaining strict boundary checks; 564 seconds total.
  • The first interop launch failed before its matrix because the enclosing development environment injected four unrelated MOQ_* variables. Corrected launches remove exactly MOQ_CARLA_LIBS, MOQ_CODEX_DEVENV, MOQ_CODEX_PROJECT_DIR, and MOQ_COUNTRY_DATABASE after entering Nix; the deliberate CLI validator and all harness scope, admission and timeouts remain unchanged. Earlier pre-meter checks were canceled for the reproduced source finding and are not credited as passes.

Follow-ups

No additional quest or API work selected. The current release ingress already drops nonzero Object IDs, so its existing path does not need this passthrough-boundary fix. Pending draft-removal moq-dev/moq#6753, checked at db6606c930ac, edits another clause of the same standard.md paragraph and flattens passthrough_accepts_datagrams_past_object_zero to draft 22. Integration must retain its supported-draft selection and this PR's typed-ID, plain-negative and late-object-0 assertions. Typed forwarding remains required.

Closes #6885

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 06d0a9d

No actionable bugs found. Dropping nonzero payload objects at the two untyped boundaries is the right narrow fix: typed relay metadata remains intact, and the lite guard runs before egress metering without changing status/oversize accounting. This is simpler and safer than rejecting ingress or refusing the track.

The added controls cover object 0 arriving last or never, all extension-offer combinations, subsequent datagrams/stream groups, and exact traffic counts. The adjusted ingress/resume fixtures retain typed-object assertions rather than deleting coverage.

Verification: static review of the changed code, tests, and surrounding send/read/resume paths; I did not run tests or independently reproduce the PR's reported CI/interop results.

Walkthrough

The changes distinguish relay paths that preserve datagram Object IDs and statuses from plain-reader and lite-hop paths that deliver only normal Object ID 0 payloads. Lite hops without the ietf extension skip nonzero payload objects before metering. Tests cover reader behavior, extension negotiation, relay metadata, and datagram accounting. Documentation and the m1 quest list were also updated.

Explanation

Changes address the Object ID loss in #6885. The lite publisher guard (rs/moq-net/src/lite/publisher.rs) drops nonzero payload objects on untyped lite hops before metering. The plain reader (rs/moq-net/src/model/track.rs) skips nonzero objects. Tests cover typed retention, untyped drops, egress accounting, status handling, and the Lite07 ietf-enabled range control. Documentation edits in rs/moq-net/src/model/datagram.rs and doc/concept/standard.md describe the same behavior. The resume.rs and ietf/subscriber.rs test changes update fixtures that expected plain-reader delivery of nonzero objects. The deletion of quest/m1/datagram-object-drop.md and the matching quest/m1/README.md entry remove the plan document for this same change. No unrelated product behavior was found in the reviewed diff.

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 4 files. Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#6885] asks that the datagram Object ID limitation become visible to a moq-transport publisher or subscriber. The examples are a rejected publish or subscription, an error, or PUBLISH_DONE. The PR does not add any of these. The head diff of rs/moq-net/src/lite/publisher.rs adds a guard in serve_datagram that returns early and emits only a local tracing::debug! entry. The plain Rust reader (rs/moq-net/src/model/track.rs) skips nonzero objects with no signal. The PR description states that no error signal and no track refusal are added. The new tests check local delivery, metering, and continued delivery. None checks an endpoint-visible signal. The changes since the previous review (pre-metering guard, documentation, test fixture updates) do not add a peer-visible signal, so the earlier FAIL still holds. The PR also keeps the ingress path unchanged. The PR notes that the current release ingress already drops nonzero Object IDs, which the PR does not address.

Resolution

Either (a) add an endpoint-visible protocol signal for the unsupported nonzero-object case, such as a defined error or PUBLISH_DONE on the affected subscription, and add an automated test that observes that signal from the moq-transport publisher or subscriber; or (b) obtain an explicit requirement update from the issue owner stating that local logging and silent endpoint behavior satisfy #6885, and record that decision in the linked issue before merge.

Reviewed commit: 1ff9b76

No new actionable bugs found in the update since 06d0a9d. The only delta corrects the fixture in rs/moq-net/src/ietf/subscriber.rs: group 9's object-0 payload now precedes END_OF_TRACK at group 10, addressing the independently reported invalid sequence. Typed-ID/payload, plain-reader filtering, and malformed-status assertions remain intact.

This is an appropriately minimal test correction; production behavior and the previous review's direction are unchanged. The separate endpoint-notification proposal was withdrawn, not implemented.

Verification: compared both commits and inspected the surrounding fixture and review threads. Static review only; I did not run tests.

Merged origin/main at 818b95e29007 into this branch (no rebase); head is now c464cfc0d24c.

Conflict resolution:

  • rs/moq-net/src/ietf/subscriber.rs: passthrough_accepts_datagrams_past_object_zero keeps moq-dev/moq#6753's draft-22-only selection (no draft 15 loop) with all of this PR's assertions: the typed cursor keeps Object ID 6, the plain reader stays pending, and a late object 0 reaches the plain reader.
  • doc/concept/standard.md: took main's paragraph and reapplied this PR's datagram clause (moq-lite peers without the extension see only Object ID 0 payloads; other objects and statuses are dropped there).
  • quest/m1/README.md: both sides removed their own finished entry (empty-segments on main, datagram-object-drop here); every other entry is kept.

One semantic conflict with moq-dev/moq#6648: it removed &str into Path, so this PR's egress metering test now builds its stats label with Path::from_static("egress") (test-only).

Validation on the merged head: just check (8,879 tests passed, 96 skipped), just test interop --all (all checks passed), and a trusted quest check --base origin/main (613 documents ok).
