Problem

The scheduled TS workflow (.github/workflows/ts.yml) has failed on main every day since 2026-10-21. Last green: run 39428393105 on 2026-10-20. Three causes, all diagnosed from CI artifacts and reproduced locally:

  1. Private PES, broadcast-sized CPB, full leak, full multiplex, headroom (since 2026-10-25): no frame is missing. moq-dev/moq#6453 clocks each declared-reorder group on its own, so the group's first reorder frames decode a tick apart just below its earliest PTS. For example, the I frame's DTS is PTS - 22 us instead of PTS - 80 ms. holes.py graded holes as DTS steps, so every group boundary read as 80 ms of missing video. T-STD and every other check pass on the same captures. The bisect candidates in the quest (moq-dev/moq#6534, moq-dev/moq#6656) are not involved.
  2. MPEG-2 video: the step set MOQ_TEST_RUNS, which binaries refuse since moq-dev/moq#6633, so the relay never started.
  3. Congested and overflowing paths (since 2026-10-21; random from run to run): the export's start slipped by one group, by tens of seconds, or until EOF (trimmed=19433, only the last second captured).
    • Since moq-dev/moq#5713, a track has to start on a whole group: a cut before its first frame goes out takes everything it holds.
    • The source skips a stalled group once it is delay / 2 behind the newest. The CPB-filling video is sent most of a second ahead of its DTS, so the cut lands while the start group's keyframe is still held for its deadline.
    • A path narrower than the media cuts every group, so the start can slip any number of groups.
    • Local debug logs confirmed it: the keyframe of each group arrives, and the export builds its tables at 3.48 s, but each group is cut about 0.77 s after its keyframe and trimmed whole.

Approach

  • test/ts/holes.py: outside --shed, find holes in the sorted presentation timestamps, the basis --shed already uses. Every lost frame still leaves a step. The lanes' other assertions are unchanged.
  • ts.yml: the MPEG-2 step uses HARNESS_RUNS like every other step.
  • moq-mux jitter buffer: a cut no longer trims what a track that has not started holds. That prefix starts on its sync frame and decodes, and the hole after it is shed like any later cut. A frame dropped late or stale before the track starts still takes the queue with it, so a stale join still starts at the next keyframe. The cut counter (Arrival::cut, Buffer::cut, the acquisition's cuts) existed only for that trim, so it is removed from the TS, FLV and MKV exporters and the passthrough release.
  • Tests: a_start_group_cut_short_goes_out (jitter and TS export) and a_late_catalog_starts_on_the_group_in_flight replace the whole-group expectations. audio_dropped_ahead_of_a_moved_start_is_not_started now moves the start with a stale join, the only way left to move it. holes.test.py covers per-group DTS steps that lose nothing, and a lost B picture, both directly and through holes.main() (from CodeRabbit's review; it fails if main() grades decode timestamps again).
  • Docs: test/ts/README.md and the trimmed row in doc/concept/stats.md.
  • Deletes quest/m1/ts-reliability/validation-green.md.

Impact

  • Public API: none. jitter::Arrival and Buffer::cut are crate-private.
  • Wire: none.
  • Behavior (moq-mux TS, FLV and MKV export): when a track's start group is cut short before anything went out, what arrived of it now goes out ahead of the hole instead of being trimmed. stats::Export::trimmed no longer counts it.

Alternatives

  • Fix the declared clock instead of the grader: spacing the leading DTS needs a frame period. feat(mux)!: clock a declared catalog reorder per group in TS, MKV and FLV #6453 deliberately decided against that ("ignoring jitter and framerate").
  • Keep the whole-group start but trim at most one cut start group: the congested lane would still join one group late, and its audio starts 3.024 s after the source, past the 3 s join. That is the "good" mode CI has hit since 2026-10-21.
  • Give the start group a larger skip budget than delay / 2: this lets the export fall further behind on a narrow path and still races the deadline.

Decisions

Both were decided by the maintainer on 2026-10-28, choosing the recommendations:

  1. Start on the prefix of a cut-short start group instead of a whole group. This reverses fix(ts): start an export on a whole group and count every drop #5713's start rule. fix(ts): start an export on a whole group and count every drop #5713 trimmed a cut start group to fix a clean-path flake (moq-dev/moq#5565). moq-dev/moq#5854 removed that flake's cause, a zero budget raised after the first frame, at its source. If it ever came back, the clean-path decode check would fail loudly instead of silently starting a group later. The congestion lanes pass without loosening, and their grader (holes.py --shed) already accepts a start on a group prefix that begins at a sync frame.
  2. holes.py grades on presentation timestamps. This doesn't loosen the check: any missing frame still leaves a gap. The grader just stops flagging a DTS discontinuity where nothing was lost, which T-STD grades separately. feat(mux)!: clock a declared catalog reorder per group in TS, MKV and FLV #6453's declared-clock decision stands.

Validation

On 61c5b53dc7 (047b122925 only merges main, with no moq-mux or test/ts changes; 5fa32f0662 only adds a holes.test.py case, and just ci and holes.test.py pass on it):

  • just check: pass. cargo nextest run -p moq-mux --all-features: 1807 passed. cargo clippy -p moq-mux --all-targets --all-features -D warnings: pass. quest check --base origin/main: pass.
  • Local just test ts lanes:
    • congested path --headroom --rate 7000000 --duration 120: PASS. Joined at 3.48 s as on 2026-10-20, trimmed=0. Before the fix it failed locally the same way as CI: trimmed=19627, start at 120.48 s.
    • overflowing path (CUBIC, --queue 250ms): PASS, with 438 datagrams overflowed.
    • passthrough overflowing path: PASS (with gaps).
    • --hrd, --klv --strict, --mpeg2, and the clean round trip: PASS.
    • just rs ts-recovery: PASS.
  • holes.py (new) passes the 2026-10-27 CI captures of private PES, CPB, leak, full multiplex and headroom. compliance.py, klv.py and overhead.py pass on them too.
  • CI: the whole TS workflow, dispatched on 047b122925, passed every step, including the scheduled-only lanes (run 40666940712). The PR's required checks also passed.

Follow-ups

  • Every exporter's start still races delay / 2 cuts against send-ahead for a stale start group. That is now only reachable through lateness, which a narrow path can also produce. It could merit a paused-clock test of a congested join at the export level, beside long_faults_hold_their_latency.

The declared decode clock (#6453) derives each group's DTS from that group's
frames alone, so a reordered group's first frames decode a tick apart below its
earliest PTS. holes.py read the resulting DTS step at each group as missing
media; grade gaps in presentation order instead, as --shed already does.

The MPEG-2 lane set MOQ_TEST_RUNS, which binaries refuse since #6633.

A path narrower than the media cuts every group, so a track waiting for a
whole start group could stay dark for the whole run: the congested TS lanes
started up to the last second, or one group past their join. What a track
holds of a cut group starts on its sync frame and decodes, so it goes out
ahead of the hole like any later cut. The cut counters the jitter buffer
kept only for that trim go with it.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 047b122

No actionable bugs found in the changed areas. Keeping the received sync-led prefix of a cut start group is a reasonable, simpler alternative to extending its skip budget; stale/late-frame trimming and recovery handling remain separate. Using sorted PTS for missing-frame detection correctly avoids treating per-group DTS reconstruction as lost media, while the existing join/tail checks remain in place. The HARNESS_RUNS correction is consistent with the workflow's other lanes.

Inspected the shared jitter-buffer change, TS/FLV/MKV/passthrough callers, and revised regression tests. Static review only: I did not run tests, replay CI captures, or independently verify the reported workflow/compliance results.

Walkthrough

The jitter buffer no longer carries cut counts. Track start behavior now retains available frames from a cut-short starting group and clears held frames after pre-start loss until a sync frame arrives. Exporter tests and TS recovery expectations were updated. The TS gap-check tool now uses presentation timestamps. The workflow harness variable changed, and the TS reliability report and its README entry were removed.

Exercise holes.main() with the reordered DTS boundary case.

PerGroupDecodeTimes only tests holes() directly. The MPEG-2 PesPacket path preserves the original PES timestamps, so it does not create the synthetic per-group DTS values used by this test. No existing test invokes normal holes.main() with this mismatch. Add a focused main-path assertion:

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 5fa32f0

Reviewed the test-only delta from 047b122. No actionable bugs found. The new main-path test addresses CodeRabbit's coverage suggestion: it checks both an intact reordered stream succeeding and a missing B picture failing through holes.main(), rather than testing only the helper. This is a focused improvement without changing production behavior; the earlier review's direction remains unchanged.

Static inspection only; I did not execute the Python tests or independently reproduce the reported CI results.

  • Reviews: Codex (no findings, 👍) and the OpenAI review both cover head 5fa32f0662. CodeRabbit's only nitpick on 047b122925 (exercise holes.main() with per-group decode steps) is fixed in 5fa32f0662: PerGroupDecodeTimes.test_main_grades_presentation_timestamps checks that an intact reordered stream passes and a lost B picture fails through main(). It fails if main() grades decode timestamps again.
  • Decisions: both recorded in the body were made by the maintainer on 2026-10-28; nothing new was decided here.
  • Checks: required CI passed; just ci and holes.test.py pass locally on 5fa32f0662; quest check --base origin/main passes.
  • Follow-up for /quest-plan: a paused-clock export test of a congested join, where a stale start group's delay / 2 cut races send-ahead (see the body's Follow-ups).

Re-land summary after the queue dropped this PR with merge_conflict (2026-10-28T17:01Z):

  • Merged main into the branch locally (no rebase). The only textual conflict was the Required link list in quest/m1/ts-reliability/README.md, and quest's merge driver resolved it: export-si-order (moq-dev/moq#7048) is gone, and this quest's entry stays removed.
  • Semantic conflict: repeated_switches_keep_the_delay, added by moq-dev/moq#7049, built a jitter::Arrival with the cut field that this PR removes. I dropped that field from the test in ffce73a. That's the only hand edit.
  • just ci origin/main (through quest gate) passes: 4174 Rust tests, plus clippy, docs and JS. holes.test.py passes, and quest check --base origin/main passes.
  • Codex reviewed head ffce73adcb and found nothing. Required CI checks pass.
