feat(moq-c)!: supply bitrate and group duration hints - #7068
Part of #7067. The goal there is a catalog built from facts the encoder knows, with runtime timing measured outside it (proposal). This PR is the first step: the hints an encoder can already supply. jitter and delay stay as they are here.
A catalog describes a track's encoding, and moq-mux already treats a supplied field as authoritative. This lets a C encoder supply what it knows, so the catalog is published from facts rather than changing as they are measured.
What
moq_audio_init.hint (moq_audio_hint): bitrate, carried on moq_mux::import::AudioInit into the importer's AudioConfig.
moq_video_hint and moq_audio_hint: group_duration_us, the longest span between two group starts on the track (an upper bound a broadcast may combine across tracks). Today it goes to Reserved::with_hls_hint, so the HLS records are in the first catalog, with the smallest multiple of the hint at or above the 4 s grid as their duration. This also applies to moq_track_request_audio and moq_track_request_video.
A bitrate or group-duration flag set with 0 (video bitrate included), or a group duration past 2^53 - 1 ms, returns MOQ_ERROR_INVALID_CONFIG. A supplied audio bitrate replaces one the init bytes give.
Impact
C ABI:moq_audio_init and moq_video_hint grow (appended has_*/value pairs, and a new moq_audio_hint), so callers rebuild against the new header and library. To migrate: moq_audio_init gains hint (a moq_audio_hint with bitrate/has_bitrate and group_duration_us/has_group_duration) and moq_video_hint gains group_duration_us/has_group_duration. A zero- or designated-initialized struct behaves as before: a bitrate it leaves out is still estimated, and an unhinted track declares its HLS duration when its first segment closes.
moq-mux: an additive bitrate on #[non_exhaustive]import::AudioInit.
The data-track bitrate this PR first had went away with #7046, which removed those configs.
Tests
audio_hint_is_authoritative: a hinted Opus bitrate survives writes that measure 400 kb/s, while an unhinted track still measures.
zeroed_audio_hint_measures: a zeroed hint still measures the bitrate.
group_duration_hint_lists_hls_up_front: the records are listed before the first frame with hls.duration 4 s for a 100 ms hint, and unchanged by the first groups.
video_group_duration_hint_declares_hls: a 3 s video hint declares 6 s.
track_request_media_carries_hints: bitrate and group duration on moq_track_request_audio/_video.
invalid_hints_are_refused: zero bitrate (audio, video) and group-duration flags, and an oversized group duration.
Checks run by hand (just ci needs Nix): cargo test -p moq-c -p moq-mux, sh/rs/c-tests.sh, cargo clippy -p moq-c -p moq-mux --all-targets -D warnings, cargo fmt --check, cargo check -p moq-ffi -p moq-transcode. On macOS, video::tests::a_resume_onto_a_new_level_reserves_on_the_new_track fails on main too, so it's unrelated.
A publisher that knows its encoding can now state it, so the catalog is
published from those facts instead of changing as they are measured:
- moq_audio_init.hint (moq_audio_hint): bitrate, carried on
moq_mux::import::AudioInit into the AudioConfig the importer publishes.
- moq_json_snapshot_config, moq_json_stream_config, moq_binary_config:
bitrate, via a new bitrate on moq_mux::json::Config and binary::Config.
- moq_video_hint and moq_audio_hint: group_duration_us, passed to
Reserved::with_hls_hint so the HLS records are in the first catalog
rather than added once the first group is written.
Every field is an appended has_*/value pair, so a zeroed struct behaves as
before. The struct layouts grow, so C callers rebuild (MIGRATE.md).
No actionable bugs found in the changed areas. The direction is sound: carry encoder-known bitrate into the existing authoritative-field machinery and reuse Reserved::with_hls_hint for group duration, including requested tracks, rather than introduce a second estimator or segmentation policy. The C ABI rebuild requirement is documented, and absent/zeroed hints retain the existing paths.
Verification: static review of the diff, importer/config propagation, catalog estimation and HLS reservation paths, generated-header setup, and added tests. I did not run builds, C ABI tests, or playback tests; the new tests primarily exercise Opus and data-track publication rather than video/requested-track hint behavior.

Remove the pre-release MIGRATE section
This is a feature commit on main, not a release cut, but it adds a new MIGRATE.md section. The release process reserves these sections for the cut so that its migration audit can assemble complete, cut-specific guidance; keep this migration in the change's Impact description and remove this section until the release cut.

Walkthrough
The change adds optional bitrate and group-duration hints to audio and video initialization. An audio bitrate hint overrides the bitrate parsed from initialization bytes; when absent, the parsed bitrate remains. The C API validates enabled bitrate and duration values. Direct publishing and track-request paths pass group durations to catalog reservations as HLS hints. Tests cover hint propagation, catalog values, invalid configurations, and measurement behavior.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to 5f775
Invalid video configuration can leave a track request pending, and the catalog guidance overpromises automatic frame-rate measurement. Both are bounded issues, but they warrant owner attention before or after merge.

Thanks for this. I reviewed it at ae023052a0; the four new tests pass locally. I found no blocking correctness bugs, but the shape of group_duration_us matters, and since this PR already breaks the ABI, now is the cheapest time to get it right.
1. group_duration_us reads as a per-track "regular" duration, but it is about to become a broadcast-wide upper bound.
quest/m1/time-addressing/consumers.md replaces the HLS records with one media.join.interval per broadcast, and plans to declare it from this hint. One broadcast can hint 20 ms on audio (the C docs say to cut after every frame, doc/lib/c/index.md:80) and 2 s on video. Only "the longest span between group starts" combines across tracks (take the max). A later track whose hint exceeds the declared interval then errors.
Suggest re-documenting the field as that upper bound and dropping the HLS wording (api.rs:199-205, :281-287). That reading already works for today's HLS grid.
2. The doc says the wrong thing about when HLS declares, and what it declares.
api.rs:202 and :284 say "instead of declaring it from the first group". An unhinted track declares when its first segment closes (hls.rs:124), not after its first group. The declared duration is also not the hint: it is the smallest multiple of the hint at or above the grid (hls.rs:153-156). A 100 ms hint declares hls.duration = 4s. This is CodeRabbit's earlier point, which was marked addressed when the file moved. The PR body has the same wording.
3. A flag set with a zero or out-of-range value is accepted silently.
has_group_duration = true with 0 silently becomes "absent" (api.rs:222-225). That is two encodings for one state; please return an invalid-config error instead.
has_bitrate = true with 0 publishes "bitrate":0 as authoritative, which skews ABR ranking.
group_duration_us = u64::MAX publishes hls.duration ≈ 1.8e16 ms, past JS's safe integers. Please bound it, or reject anything that doesn't fit in milliseconds.
4. Tests.
Nothing covers moq_video_hint.group_duration_us.
Nothing covers the hints on moq_track_request_audio / moq_track_request_video (publish.rs:1004, 1021).
In group_duration_hint_lists_hls_up_front, the "first groups don't change the listed records" check writes 400 ms. That is under the 4 s grid, so an unhinted track wouldn't have declared yet either. Please assert the declared hls.duration.
Please also add the zero-flag cases from 3.
5. "never republishes the catalog" overstates it (api.rs:186-188, :488-489, :502-503, :524-525). Jitter and delay still republish it; #7067 counted 16 versions with every hint set. "is never re-estimated" is accurate.
6. Audio bitrate: C and Rust disagree on who wins. The C doc says the value is "published as given". moq-mux/src/import/track.rs:48 fills init.bitrate only when the parser left it unset. No audio parser sets it today, so nothing differs yet. Pick one rule: either the hint overrides, or the doc says "fills gaps" like the video hint's.
7. Docs. A moq.h change also updates doc/lib/c (AGENTS.md). The "Audio needs cuts" bullet at doc/lib/c/index.md:80 is the natural place to mention the cadence hint.
The ABI shape is otherwise good: the ! is warranted, has_* matches has_connect_timeout, the nested hint mirrors moq_video_init.hint, and nothing new needs ownership.
…ion as a bound
From review:
- group_duration_us is the longest span between two group starts, an
upper bound a broadcast may combine across tracks; the HLS wording goes.
- A has_* flag set with 0, and a group duration past 2^53 - 1 ms, are
MOQ_ERROR_INVALID_CONFIG instead of a second "absent" or a bitrate of 0.
- A supplied audio bitrate replaces one the init bytes give, as the C doc
says.
- "never republishes the catalog" becomes "is never re-estimated": jitter
and delay still republish it.
- Tests for the video group duration, requested tracks, the declared
hls.duration and the refused hints; doc/lib/c describes the hints.
Thanks for the review. All seven are addressed in 44d25a1:
group_duration_us is documented as the longest span between two group starts, an upper bound a broadcast may combine across tracks; the HLS wording is gone.
The PR body and publish.rs now say an unhinted track declares when its first segment closes, and a hinted one declares the smallest multiple of the hint at or above the grid.
A has_* flag with 0, and a group duration past 2^53 - 1 ms, return MOQ_ERROR_INVALID_CONFIG.
New tests: video_group_duration_hint_declares_hls, track_request_media_carries_hints, invalid_hints_are_refused, and group_duration_hint_lists_hls_up_front now asserts hls.duration.
"is never re-estimated".
The hint overrides: a supplied audio bitrate replaces one the init bytes give.
doc/lib/c/index.md mentions the cadence hint under "Audio needs cuts" and adds a "Catalog hints" bullet.
No new actionable bugs found in the delta since 7a4cf25. The shared validation helper, explicit audio-hint precedence, and added video/requested-track tests are a focused improvement without another estimation policy.
Prior findings: group-duration zero/range validation and audio/data zero-bitrate validation are fixed, and the requested coverage/docs are improved. One part of the existing zero-bitrate concern remains: rs/moq-c/src/api.rs:322-323 still forwards moq_video_hint { has_bitrate: true, bitrate: 0, .. } as authoritative Some(0). Route video bitrate through the same validation in parse_video_init and add a video-zero regression before describing all zero hints as rejected. This is a remaining prior concern, not a new inline finding.
Verification: static review of the two-commit delta, hint propagation and added tests only; I did not run builds, tests or playback.

A video hint with has_bitrate and 0 published bitrate 0 as supplied.
It now returns MOQ_ERROR_INVALID_CONFIG like the other bitrate hints,
and doc/lib/c names which flags the rule covers.
Thanks. The video bitrate hint now goes through the same check (has_bitrate with 0 returns MOQ_ERROR_INVALID_CONFIG, with a regression in invalid_hints_are_refused), and the doc names which flags the rule covers.
The remaining video zero-bitrate concern from my previous review is fixed. moq_video_hint::resolve() now uses the shared supplied-bitrate validator, and parse_video_init() propagates its error before either direct publication or requested-track acceptance mutates publish state. An unset flag still means absent. The regression checks MOQ_ERROR_INVALID_CONFIG and that no video rendition was published; the documentation now limits the zero-value rule to the intended flags.
No new actionable bugs found in the delta since 44d25a1. Direction: reusing the existing validator is the simplest consistent fix, without another hint policy or ABI change in this update.
Verification: static delta, shared parser/caller/error paths and regression-test review with an independent pass. No builds, tests, C ABI or playback checks run.
If has_bitrate is true and bitrate is zero, parse_video_init now returns before track_request_video removes the request. The documented API says the call consumes the handle, but the subscriber remains waiting. Release or reject the request on validation failure. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Leaving has_framerate false does not always publish a measured rate. For example, the estimator does not publish 15 fps, and VP8 does not supply it in the bitstream. Advise callers to supply a hint for rates outside the estimator’s supported set. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Fair, but this is outside this PR's scope: the bullet only adds the hint fields, and the measured-when-unset behavior (including which rates the estimator recognizes) predates it. I'm leaving the wording as is here and suggesting the estimator's coverage limits as a docs follow-up.
moq-dev#7046 removed moq_json_stream_config, moq_binary_config and the binary
track functions, and slimmed moq_json_snapshot_config to `deltas`. The
data-track bitrate this branch added to them is dropped with them; the
audio and video hints stay.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
On CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding at rs/moq-c/src/api.rs:3228 (release the request when video validation fails): this behavior predates the PR. On main, moq_track_request_audio/_video already return a parse_*_init error (a NULL pointer or an unknown codec) before the request is removed, so the caller still holds the handle and can retry or call moq_track_request_free. The new zero-bitrate and group-duration checks follow that same contract. Whether "Consumes the request handle" should also hold on argument errors is an API question for all the moq_track_request_* calls, so I'm suggesting it as a follow-up instead of changing it here.
Landing the unchanged head 5f77517d1ab7c0647b83c59d14f3112f5a894877 with the maintainer’s explicit authorization.
Review: CodeRabbit’s summary explicitly records this head as reviewed, covers the delta from 17ba2578 to 5f77517, and reports no new actionable comments. Earlier findings are fixed or have reasoned replies. Reusing that completed review avoids treating the later conversational replies as a new code review.
Validation: BASH_ENV=/dev/null quest gate just ci passed in the loaded Nix dev shell, including 4,198 Rust tests (60 skipped by the existing configuration), both feature extremes, WebAssembly checks, and tooling checks. The environment setting prevents the launcher from sourcing its dev-shell PATH repeatedly; production and tests are unchanged.
Landing guard: freshly fetched origin/main and the PR head; the trusted installed quest check --base origin/main --branch feat/c-catalog-hints, run outside the head checkout, passed with 652 documents. The checkout is clean. No new source changes or commits were needed; the predecessor’s checkout was preserved read-only.
API/wire: the documented C struct growth requires rebuilding callers; Rust gains optional import::AudioInit::bitrate. No wire-format change. The implementation reuses existing authoritative catalog fields and HLS reservations, with no additional estimation policy.
Suggested follow-ups remain separate: clarify request-handle ownership on invalid media configuration, and document frame-rate estimator coverage. Neither blocks this PR.

audio_hint_is_authoritative: a hinted Opus bitrate survives writes that measure 400 kb/s, while an unhinted track still measures.zeroed_audio_hint_measures: a zeroed hint still measures the bitrate.group_duration_hint_lists_hls_up_front: the records are listed before the first frame withhls.duration4 s for a 100 ms hint, and unchanged by the first groups.video_group_duration_hint_declares_hls: a 3 s video hint declares 6 s.track_request_media_carries_hints: bitrate and group duration onmoq_track_request_audio/_video.invalid_hints_are_refused: zero bitrate (audio, video) and group-duration flags, and an oversized group duration.Checks run by hand (
