fix(mux)!: publish a new track when a rendition's decoder identity changes - #7110
Finishes Rust identity enforcement and deletes the quest. No Rust publisher redefines a track it has published any more. A change to a rendition's decoder identity publishes under a new track name; every other field still updates in place, per the hang draft's Track Identity section.
Taken over from a stale claim: the quest/m1/catalog-identity-rs branch, last pushed 2026-10-16, with no PR. This PR continues the branch's work, three of whose commits had never been pushed, with main merged in.
Changes
hang:VideoConfig::same_identity and AudioConfig::same_identity name the draft's identity fields, so every crate shares one definition. Video: codec, description, container, display aspect, interlaced. Audio: codec, description, container, sample_rate, channel_count.
moq-mux guard:container::Producer::set, replace, and stage refuse an identity change with Error::IdentityChanged.
moq-mux codec importers: the H.264, H.265, AV1, VP8, and VP9 importers mint the next free <name>/<n> for an identity change and finish the old track. This covers a new avcC/hvcC, an SPS with a new profile, level, or scan, and a codec hint the stream contradicts, and it applies to MPEG-TS and moq-rtc ingest through them. The successor keeps the old track's HLS segment duration and declares its own reorder bound, and the old track's HLS records retire once it drops. A size change alone still updates in place.
AV1: an av1C configures from the sequence header in its configOBUs, so the first sync sample's repeat no longer differs in colour fields and mints a track. A record without a sequence header waits for the stream's first one.
MPEG-TS audio: AAC, MP2, AC-3, and E-AC-3 start a new track when a frame header changes the format, instead of ignoring the change. The new track reserves on the program's timebase (AAC's fallback reservation now does too), and the PID's mpegts entry moves to the new name.
FLV: in-band MP3, AC-3, and E-AC-3 reconfigure from every frame header, so a change mints a new track as FLV's sequence headers already did.
moq-video: the capture loop follows the rendition when a reopen onto another mode or backend mints a new track. It idles on the new track's demand with a fresh bandwidth claim, instead of exiting when the old track ends. encode::Producer::demand follows the current track.
Bandwidth in the bindings: the moq-ffiMoqVideoProducer and moq-cmoq_encode_video video producers move their bandwidth reservation and rate follower to the new track after the write that mints it, and MoqMediaTrackProducer::demand follows the importer's current track.
moq-audio:set_bitrate publishes the retuned bitrate in place, through a new container::Producer::set_bitrate that changes only the bitrate (as a supplied value) and keeps every other published field. The encoder rolls back if the publish fails.
moq-c:moq_publish_video_config and moq_publish_audio_config refuse a redefinition of an authored rendition with MOQ_ERROR_MUX.
Tests: tests that asserted in-place rewrites now follow the minted name (h264, h265, AV1, the moq-video resize, the moq-ffi rung). New tests cover the guard, the minting, the TS/FLV audio format changes, the moq-c refusals, and a capture reopen onto a new level.
Naming: a successor is <name>/<n>, counted per base name by the catalog, matching moq-gst (moq-dev/moq#6780) and @moq/publish. The branch used a broadcast-unique {id}/media. A minted rendition gets a new catalog key; it doesn't keep its ID and set track.
moq-c refuses rather than mints: the C caller writes the track under its own name, so moq-c can't move it. The refusal covers names still listed; a removed name that returns with a new identity isn't tracked.
TS AAC: a changed program config element is still refused as a damaged unit, as aac_program_config_changed_mid_stream_refuses_the_unit already decided. Only changed ADTS header fields mint.
moq-ffi video set_bitrate: it keeps the advertised maximum fixed, following moq-dev/moq#6781. That decision is newer than this quest's "moq-ffiset_bitrate should update the catalog's bitrate" line. The rung test now retunes within its declared level, because 3 Mbps moves H.264 from level 2.0 to 2.1, which is a new codec string and so a new track.
moq-audio retune lowers the advertised bitrate: following the quest's decision, a downward retune lowers the advertised bitrate too. CodeRabbit suggested keeping the old maximum (thread); only an explicit caller retune reaches this, so the advertised value tracks what the encoder sends.
Quest deleted: the quest's "later, at lower priority" consumer coverage is left as a suggested follow-up rather than kept as the quest's remainder.
Checks

quest check --base origin/main passes.
Follow-ups
Consumer coverage:@moq/watch and HLS export coverage for in-band resolution changes, rendition switches (now including <name>/<n> successors), reconnects, and late joiners against the contract.
Hints that contradict the stream: a publisher whose codec hint disagrees with the stream still mints once on the first keyframe. moq-video's probe matches the stream at the probed mode. A caller passing VideoInit with a codec should have a check that warns when the first keyframe contradicts it.
Retired-name tracking in moq-c authored configs: remember removed names, so one cannot return with a new identity.
Existing approved batch slot11 transferred untouched from worker A to root. No additional agent or batch expansion.

Audio and video identity edits currently succeed through the catalog setters; regressions require refusal without retaining the edit. Coded size, bitrate, and framerate controls remain allowed. Production unchanged; importer rotations and remaining publisher fixes are pending.
Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>
Refuse identity edits in set/replace/stage and rotate the five elementary video importers onto never-reused names. Size, bitrate, and frame-rate updates remain in place. Guard tests29/29, existing mux suite1392/1392, targeted rotation regression passed. Remaining: C helper scope choice, audio/TS/FLV/GST/video producer integration, docs and full final gates. This is an incomplete checkpoint.
Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>
The proposed refusal expects existing MOQ_ERROR_MUX(-29), while unchanged C production returns success. Production behavior awaits the maintainer scope choice; no ABI changes.
Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>
Update the existing rendition from the live encoder configuration after a successful bitrate change, retaining its track and decoder identity. A regression covers the immediate catalog value and subsequent encoded packets.
Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>
Keep compatible producers live, mint a fresh name when decoder inputs change, and retain finished resolved descriptions through renegotiation and graceful catalog closure. Unresolved reservations release their gates; explicit pad release and failure retain their existing retirement behavior.
Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>
Rework the checkpoint against main: mint successors as <name>/<n> from the
catalog (timeline.rs is gone), treat interlaced as identity, configure AV1
from the av1C's sequence header, and let a minted track declare its own
reorder bound. moq-gst takes main's #6780 sink.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
hang::catalog::{VideoConfig, AudioConfig}::same_identity name the draft's
identity fields; moq-mux refuses an in-place redefinition and moq-c refuses
an authored one. TS AAC/MP2/AC-3 and FLV in-band audio start a new track when
a frame header changes the format, and moq-video's capture follows a reopen
onto a new track.

Walkthrough
The change adds audio and video rendition identity checks and replaces tracks when decoder identity or in-band audio format changes. Codec importers and publisher integrations follow replacement tracks, including updating video bandwidth reservations. C-authored configuration updates reject changes to identity fields. AV1 initialization reads configuration from sequence headers in configOBUs. The audio producer also updates catalog bitrate metadata after retuning.

Retire the old HLS record track when replacing its media track
With HLS enabled (the default), every decoder-identity change leaves the predecessor's record track in hls::Tracks::state.tracks. finish() drops the recorder, and replacing self removes the rendition, but neither calls catalog.retire(); the HLS registry retains its Live state and record-track producer until the whole broadcast ends. A long-lived RTMP/TS input that repeatedly changes configuration therefore accumulates tracks without bound, and existing record-track subscribers never receive their terminal finish. Retire the predecessor after finishing it, as FLV's retire() path already does, and cover the new AAC/legacy TS replacement paths too.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in eb7abfd: container::Producer::reconfigure drops the predecessor and then retires its HLS records, and the TS AAC and legacy audio successors do the same through the program's timebase. The successor tests assert that hls_tracks() stays flat across mints.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Move the FFI bandwidth reservation onto the successor track
When a MoqVideoProducer published against a MoqAllocator changes decoder identity, this replacement closes the track whose demand backs its bandwidth reservation. In rs/moq-ffi/src/video.rs, that reservation is created once in the constructor, and neither VideoProducer::write() nor MoqVideoProducer replaces it when publishing moves to a new name. The allocator consequently stops counting this encoder's traffic, while its rate follower reads the old track's share rather than the successor's demand. This can happen when a disabled rendition resumes at a ceiling requiring another codec level, allowing other encoders to consume bandwidth still being used by this one. Refresh the reservation and follower on migration, as the capture loop already does.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in eb7abfd: after a write moves the rendition to a new track, MoqVideoProducer stops its follower and reserves against the new track's demand, with a new follower (a_rung_resumed_past_its_level_reserves_on_the_new_track). moq-c's moq_encode_video_frame had the same gap and now does the same (a_resume_onto_a_new_level_reserves_on_the_new_track).
Two actionable migration issues remain; inspection confirms the existing independent findings, so no duplicate inline comments:
P1 — Retire predecessor HLS records at rs/moq-mux/src/container/producer.rs:289–290 (and the TS audio replacement paths). finish() releases the recorder but not the registry entry or record-track producer, accumulating retained tracks and leaving record readers open. Retire after finishing and test repeated migrations: existing finding.
P1 — Move FFI bandwidth ownership with the track. The same replacement changes demand, but rs/moq-ffi/src/video.rs:790–808 creates its reservation/follower only once and write() does not refresh them. Rebind both to successor demand, including a disable/retune/resume test crossing a codec level: existing finding.
Direction: shared identity predicates and per-track successors are preferable to restarting the whole broadcast; centralizing successor teardown would reduce lifecycle omissions across video and TS audio. No additional actionable bugs identified in the changed areas inspected.
Verification: static review of the patch and relevant ownership/capture/FFI/HLS code; tests were not run and the PR's reported results were not independently verified.
…idth claim
A minted track's predecessor kept its HLS record track registered until the
broadcast ended, and the moq-ffi and moq-c video producers kept reserving
bandwidth against the ended track. Retire the predecessor once its recorder
drops, on the codec importers and the TS audio paths, and re-reserve against
the new track after the write that moves it.

Reviewed commit: 0d47f01418239acd3f3f92ea2c9017f4b8a30428, compared with my previous review at 696e0480896a1373f2d063804f0dfebe836db6da, separating merged base changes from the follow-up fixes.
Both previously referenced P1 findings are addressed in the inspected code:
HLS predecessor retention: video and TS audio replacements now drop the predecessor before retiring its HLS records; tests assert the retained record-track count stays flat.
FFI reservation migration: writes detect the changed track and recreate the reservation/follower against successor demand. The same gap is covered in the C encoder path, with migration regression tests and handle-lifetime documentation.
No new actionable bugs found in these updates. Direction remains sound: explicit retirement and reusing the follow-grant path keep the fix focused without restarting the broadcast.
Verification: static review of the changed lifecycle paths, surrounding follower ownership, and added tests only; tests were not run.

Refresh the media FFI demand handle after track replacement
When a whole-frame video importer changes decoder identity, this replacement leaves MoqMediaTrackProducer watching the predecessor forever. In rs/moq-ffi/src/media.rs, from_import() caches import.demand() once, and demand() always clones that cached handle, even after write_frame() moves the importer to another track. Consequently, even reacquiring demand returns the old name and a terminal watcher rather than the successor's subscriber demand, breaking callers that use it to gate publishing. Obtain demand from the current importer, as MoqMediaTrackStreamProducer::demand() already does.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 204118f: MoqMediaTrackProducer no longer caches the demand; demand() reads it from the importer, as the stream producer already does. Covered by video_track_demand_follows_a_new_level.

Reviewed commit: 204118f92f5054cc42cfcdd8c928b90594f32a44; incremental review since 0d47f01418239acd3f3f92ea2c9017f4b8a30428 (same base).
The independently reported stale whole-frame FFI demand handle is fixed: MoqMediaTrackProducer::demand() now obtains the current importer's demand under the same mutex used for writes. The added level-change regression checks the successor name, and the Dart checksum changes with the updated API documentation. No new actionable bugs found in this incremental change.
Direction: removing the redundant cached handle is the simplest fix and matches the stream producer. The two P1 fixes verified in my preceding review are unchanged. Other newly posted comments concern unchanged areas and were not re-reviewed here.
Verification: static inspection of the three-file update and surrounding write/demand ownership; tests and binding generation were not run.
…mpegts entry
container::Producer::set_bitrate advertises a supplied bitrate without
replacing the rest of the config, which moq-audio's set_bitrate now uses,
restoring the encoder when the publish fails. A TS PID whose format change
mints a new track moves its mpegts entry to the new name.

Reviewed commit: 297dfded1b4b82ba19b9a2c828fbbc8564196899, incrementally since 204118f92f5054cc42cfcdd8c928b90594f32a44 (same base).
No new actionable bugs found in this update. The independently reported audio-retune metadata/publication issues are addressed: only bitrate changes, published jitter/delay and other fields are preserved, and publication failure attempts to restore the encoder rate before returning. The TS successor mapping now replaces the predecessor's PID/descriptors entry and has a catalog-extension regression assertion. Previously verified HLS/FFI fixes are unchanged.
Direction: the focused bitrate setter and PID-to-name map are simpler than rebuilding whole configs or retaining stale entries. The downward-retune contract is unchanged, not a new finding here. Direct regressions for metadata preservation and publication-failure rollback would strengthen the audio coverage.
Verification: static inspection of the five-file delta and surrounding catalog/TS lifecycle code; tests were not run.
Merge summary at 297dfded1b4b82ba19b9a2c828fbbc8564196899:
All review findings are addressed: the HLS predecessor retirement and the FFI bandwidth move (eb7abfd), the media FFI demand handle (204118f), and the audio retune fields, rollback, TS PID mapping, and moq-c MIGRATE name (297dfde).
CodeRabbit withdrew its "keep the advertised maximum" point after the reply that an explicit caller retune should advertise what the encoder now sends.
CI is green and quest check --base origin/main passes on this head. The quest is deleted.
Follow-ups are left for /quest-plan: consumer coverage of <name>/<n> successors in @moq/watch and HLS export, a warning when a VideoInit codec hint contradicts the first keyframe, retired-name tracking for moq-c authored configs, and direct regression tests for the audio retune metadata preservation and publish-failure rollback.
