feat(moq-video)!: capture encodes while enabled, on demand as an opt-in - #7164
moq_video::encode::publish_capture now keeps the camera open and encodes whether or not anyone is watching. A late subscriber or fetch can now get the recent past from the track's cache, within its max_delay. The new Capture::on_demand option brings back the old behavior: the camera closes between viewers.
Probe camera reused. The capture keeps the camera opened by the startup probe instead of closing it and opening it again. That avoids a second open at startup, which could mean a second permission prompt or (on compositors without restore-token persistence) a second portal picker. On demand, the probe's camera closes right away, as before.
Unwatched bitrate. Following the epic's decision, an encoder nobody watches goes back to its configured bitrate and ignores the grant. The next viewer's rate control starts fresh from that ceiling. The new rest helper in producer.rs does this. Encoder::set_bitrate already skips an unchanged rate, so this costs nothing when nothing had backed off.
Rendition moves. When a frame moves the rendition to a newly named track, the always-on capture keeps the same camera and encoder and continues on the new track, with a claim against it. On demand, it releases the camera as before.
Demand helpers.until_wanted became until_capturing(demand, on_demand, run). When the capture should run or release now depends on the mode. Either way, the track ending is a clean exit.
Docs. Updated the docs that described capture as gated on viewers: crate docs, README, doc/lib/rs/moq-video.md, the PipeWire/portal notes, doc/bin/cli.md, the moq-cli comment, moq-transcode comments, and a moq-net test comment.
Quests. Deleted the video quest and its links. The CLI quest now names Capture::on_demand.
Impact
Public API: behavior change: publish_capture encodes while unwatched by default. To migrate, set Capture { on_demand: true, .. } to keep the old behavior. The new field is additive, since Capture is #[non_exhaustive]. moq publish capture now keeps the camera open by default; --on-demand comes with the CLI quest.
Wire: none.
Tests
an_unwatched_capture_keeps_its_past: with no subscriber, the capture writes groups from the probe's camera without opening it again, and a subscriber that arrives later with max_delay reads them.
on_demand_opens_the_camera_for_a_viewer: on demand, the probe's camera closes and only a viewer opens it again; when the viewer leaves, it closes again.
an_unwatched_capture_rests_at_its_ceiling: a watched capture follows its grant. Once unwatched, it goes back to the ceiling and ignores grant changes. The next viewer's grant applies fresh.
The clock fixtures and the abandoned-open test now set on_demand: true, since they test idle restarts. The cut/refresh driver tests now run on the default path.
just ci passes locally.
Choices made without asking
Named the option on_demand: bool on Capture, matching the JS quest's onDemand. The sibling audio PR moq-dev/moq#7159 should use the same name.
The capture reuses the probe's camera instead of opening it again (see above).
Implemented the epic's unwatched-bitrate decision here, since this is where Rust video first encodes with no viewer.
Updated doc/bin/cli.md and the moq-cli comment now, because this change made them wrong. The CLI quest still adds the flag.
moq-dev/moq#7054 adds an_hls_only_viewer_starts_capture. That test depends on capture being demand-gated, so with this PR it has to set on_demand: true. Its module-doc line also conflicts with the rewrite here. I trial-merged its head (9dd28c0) into this branch: the merge resolves with the test ported onto the shared local helper and on_demand: true, and all 25 producer tests pass. Whichever PR lands second needs that change.
Suggested follow-ups
moq-audio's "unwatched rests at its ceiling" logic will repeat this loop's rest. If audio ends up with the same pattern, a shared helper in moq_mux::rate (for example a Follower that pauses while its track is unwatched) could replace both.
`publish_capture` keeps the camera open and encodes whether or not anyone
watches, so a late subscriber or fetch finds the recent past in the
track's cache. It captures from the probe's open instead of reopening the
source, sparing a second permission prompt or portal picker.
`Capture::on_demand` restores the close-between-viewers behavior.
While nobody watches, the encoder returns to its configured bitrate and
ignores the grant; the next viewer's rate control starts over from there.
A rendition move keeps capturing onto the new track instead of reopening
the camera, unless on demand.

moq-video captures and encodes while enabled
feat(moq-video)!: capture encodes while enabled, on demand as an opt-in
Oct 29, 2026
Capture publishing now keeps the probed camera open and encodes continuously by default, even without subscribers. The new public Capture::on_demand option restores demand-dependent capture. In that mode, viewer or HLS-record demand starts capture. The encoder follows the connection grant while watched and returns to its configured bitrate when unwatched. Tests and documentation cover or describe these modes.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to 87117
With the new default of continuous capture, a rendition move followed by a rare transient encoder retune failure leaves the encoder at a fixed bitrate for the rest of the run. Viewers lose bandwidth adaptation but keep working video. The fix is small and localized, and the issue is not merge-blocking.

No actionable bugs found in this change. I reviewed probe-camera reuse, the always-on/on-demand demand races, cancellation, timestamp mapping, rendition moves and reservation replacement, and the unwatched bitrate reset. The new fixtures meaningfully cover cached pre-subscription groups, avoiding a second camera open, on-demand release, and fresh rate control when viewers return.
Direction is consistent with the eager-encoding design. Keeping one loop with an explicit on_demand policy and reusing the probe stream is simpler than maintaining separate capture pipelines. The documented default behavior change matters for camera lifetime and resource use; the CLI opt-in flag remains a separate follow-up. I would keep the rate helper local until the audio implementation demonstrates a genuinely shared abstraction.
Static source/test review only; I did not run tests or CI, exercise physical cameras/portal permissions or hardware encoders, or reproduce the trial merge with #7054. The reported passing checks are not independently verified.
Reviews: Codex gave a 👍 with no findings, and the OpenAI automated review found nothing actionable. Both cover this head. CodeRabbit was rate-limited, so it doesn't count. No unresolved threads.
Checks: 12/12 passing. quest check --base origin/main passes on this head.

Reviewed the capture/HLS integration delta since 3061bca, excluding unrelated changes merged from main. No new actionable bugs found; there were no earlier actionable findings to resolve.
The #7054 reconciliation is now represented in source: the HLS-only-viewer test explicitly selects on_demand and checks that subscribing only to records opens the second camera and produces a record. Moving the clock fixture's record subscription until after capture finishes preserves its intended idle/restart scenario now that record readers themselves create demand. These are meaningful integration tests, not merely a cosmetic merge; the production eager-capture loop remains unchanged. This is the right, minimal adaptation.
Static diff/test review only; I did not execute these tests, CI, hardware capture or HLS playback, or re-review every unrelated main-branch change.
Merged origin/main (f0a38ae, after moq-dev/moq#7054 landed) into 8711757, resolving the conflict that dropped this PR from the queue:
rs/moq-video/src/encode/producer.rs module doc: kept the always-on wording and extended the Capture::on_demand sentence, so Demand::wanted is Some when "a subscriber is watching, or reading its HLS records".
quest/m1/eager-encode/cli.md: the plan names both moq_video::encode::Capture::on_demand and moq_audio::encode::Capture::on_demand. I dropped its Required section, since the audio and video children are both done.
The moq-audio docs from moq-dev/moq#7159 already match the video wording, so they needed no change.
Local checks: cargo test for moq-video (capture,openh264), moq-audio (capture), moq-mux, moq-net, moq-cli and moq-transcode pass; clippy with -D warnings on all targets passes; cargo fmt --check passes; quest check --base origin/main passes.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
On a track move, rebuild the rate follower against the new claim whether or not rest succeeds.
Line 900 replaces *claim with a new reservation and drops the old one. The current rate follower still reads claim.consume() from the old reservation. A consumer of a dropped reservation reports None from then on (see dropping_a_reservation_releases_it in rs/moq-net/src/model/bandwidth.rs). rest rebuilds the follower only on the Ok(()) branch. A transient set_bitrate error in rest keeps the old follower. Its comment says "the follower still matches the rate the encoder kept", but here that follower reads a dead reservation.
The consequence applies only in continuous mode (on_demand == false). After a rendition move plus one transient retune failure, the encoder keeps its current bitrate for the rest of the run. Viewers on the new track never get bandwidth adaptation. On-demand mode breaks out and builds a fresh follower on reopen, so it does not have this problem.
🐛 Proposed fix
watch = demand.clone();
watched = false;
+ // The old follower reads the reservation just dropped, so bind it to the new claim+ // even if the retune below fails.+ if rate.is_some() {+ rate = Some(rate::Follower::new(claim.consume(), rate::Policy::new(ceiling)));+ }
rest(&mut encoder, &mut rate, claim, ceiling).await;

Resolves capture against main's always-on capture (#7188, #7164): the
audio source is now moq_audio::encode::Capture, with_report also arms
the TS republish, and the video loop reports the ceiling when an
unwatched encoder rests back to it.
