Completes quest/m1/ts-reliability/pat-lifecycle.md (deleted here). It follows the plan the maintainer left when closing moq-dev/moq#6301, built on moq-dev/moq#7171.

Problem

The import already follows a PAT that moves the PMT: it moves its reassembler and updates program.pmtPid in place. But a running export ts kept the PMT on the PID its first tables used, whatever the catalog said later. Its output stayed consistent, but only an export started after the move followed it.

Approach

Since moq-dev/moq#7171, the export's Psi holds the tables as they stand, and every copy not yet begun lays them. So a move is one more state change:

  • Laid records the PMT PID, so Psi::current sees a move. It re-encodes the PAT naming the new PID, at the next version.
  • Export::move_pmt runs on each catalog update. When program.pmtPid names a new PID, it records it as Psi::moving.
  • Export::follow_pmt applies the move once no copy of the tables is mid-flight (Psi::sending is empty). It updates Psi::pmt_pid, calls Schedule::set_tables for the new PID, forgets the old PID's buffer, and restates. Every copy not yet begun takes the move. A copy already on its way finishes on the PID its own PAT named. follow_pmt runs on the catalog update, after each slot is laid, and when tables lead (a rewind may have dropped the copy it waited for).
  • The PAT has its own version_number, stepped only when its network entry or PMT PID changes.
  • A move that can't be followed fails the export. That covers a move onto a PID that a stream in the catalog rides, that SI rides, or that the clock rides alone, and a move to 0x1FFF or above. A move onto a PID that a dropped stream is still draining on waits for that stream to retire, and every catalog update checks the target again while it waits. Changed in b93c166 after review: the first version warned and kept the PMT in place.
  • The PIDs the PMT leaves stay off-limits to streams and to a synthesized PCR PID (Psi::left).
  • Draft: pmtPid changes in place on a moved PMT. A consumer rebuilding the stream must emit a PAT at the next version_number naming the new PID. It must not emit the PMT on the new PID before that PAT, or on the old PID after it. There's a changelog line too.

Tests

Carried over from moq-dev/moq#6301 where they still apply:

  • revision_test::a_moved_pmt_moves_behind_a_new_pat: a live export whose catalog moves pmtPid emits PATs at versions 0 then 1, and the PMT on the new PID keeps version 0. Nothing goes out on the new PID before the moving PAT, and nothing on the old PID after it.
  • revision_test::a_pmt_moved_before_its_tables_go_out_moves_every_copy: the move arrives while every copy is still queued. Exactly one PAT goes out, at version 0, naming the new PID, and nothing goes out on the old PID.
  • revision_test::a_track_recorded_on_the_pmt_pid_after_the_catalog_moves_it_takes_another: now pins the move instead of the PMT staying put. PATs go out at (0, 0x20) then (1, 0x1000). The track takes neither PID, and the program number stays 1.
  • export_test::a_switch_follows_the_last_pat_out: a move that no slot carried, then a switch to another instance. PATs go out at versions 0 then 1. It passes on the base too, as it did in fix(mux): TS programs follow the PAT as it changes #6301; it pins that a PAT laid but never sent burns no version.

New:

  • revision_test::a_pmt_moved_while_its_tables_go_out_moves_behind_them: at 4 packets a slot, with a 3-packet PMT, the PMT moves back and forth every 50 ms. Every PMT packet rides the PID named by the PAT before it, and no two PATs at one version name different PIDs. I checked with a temporary probe that one of the moves lands while a copy is mid-flight and waits for it.
  • revision_test::a_pmt_moved_onto_a_stream_fails_the_export: a move onto the audio PID fails the export.
  • revision_test::a_pmt_moved_onto_a_draining_stream_waits_for_it: a move onto a dropped stream's PID waits. Every unit on that PID is a PES before the PAT naming it, and a PMT section after. It fails without the wait.
  • revision_test::a_stream_returning_to_the_pid_the_pmt_waits_for_fails_the_export: drop a stream, move the PMT onto its PID, then give the PID back to the stream. The export fails instead of waiting forever. This was added after review, and it fails on b93c166.
  • export::tests::a_revision_takes_the_version_after_the_last_laid: extended. Each table steps from its own version. A NIT change bumps only the PAT. A moved PID after 31 PMT revisions re-encodes the PAT at its own next version, naming the new PID.

The three revision tests ported from #6301 fail with move_pmt stubbed out.

Local results: cargo test -p moq-mux --lib ran 1843 tests, all passed, and just rs lint -p moq-mux is clean. Clippy --all-targets -D warnings is clean, and so are just drafts check and quest check --base origin/main.

Choices made without asking

  • Each table has its own version (Laid::pat_version, Program::pat_version), changed in ea49757 after review. The PAT steps from its own last laid version when its network entry or PMT PID changes. The PMT steps only when its content changes, so the PMT on the new PID keeps its version, as in fix(mux): TS programs follow the PAT as it changes #6301. Before this, the PAT took the PMT's next version. That meant 31 PMT-only revisions followed by a move could wrap onto the PAT version a receiver already held. It also means a NIT change no longer bumps the PMT's version. A switch to another instance still advances both.
  • Waiting for a mid-flight copy. With the move applied at once, the rest of a begun copy would go out on a PID the schedule no longer counts in TBsys/Bsys, or in the unpadded layout's tables lane. I couldn't make that change the output at any rate I tried (4, 6, 20, 40, 100 packets a slot): a copy spans slots there because the slot is full, not because of Bsys. So the wait is defensive bookkeeping that no test can tell apart yet. The cost is a delay of a slot or so.
  • Old PMT PIDs stay off-limits to streams for the instance's life, rather than only until the copies on them drain. A receiver that missed the new PAT may still filter the old PID as a PMT. PIDs are plentiful.
  • Not carried over from fix(mux): TS programs follow the PAT as it changes #6301: the import and Programs halves (a_moved_pmt_is_followed already exists on main), and the --sync handling (--sync was removed in moq-dev/moq#6554).

Impact

  • moq export ts follows a moved PMT PID without a restart.
  • No public API change. Output is unchanged for any catalog whose pmtPid never moves.

Suggested follow-ups

  • None required. The epic's "PAT changes" row is now marked landed.

A catalog that moves `program.pmtPid` now moves the export's PMT behind a
PAT at the next version_number naming the new PID. Every table copy not
yet begun takes the move; one already on its way finishes on the PID its
PAT named first. A PID a stream, the clock, or SI rides keeps the PMT
where it is. The PIDs the PMT leaves stay off-limits to streams.

Walkthrough

The exporter now tracks PAT and PMT versions independently. When a catalog changes the PMT PID, the exporter updates the PAT and moves PMT output after in-flight copies finish and the destination PID is available. Tests cover version changes, PID conflicts, draining streams, and moves during table output. Documentation describes the relocation sequence and removes the prior claim that exports retain the initial PMT PID.

Reviewed commit: 99ab11e

P2 — Advance the PAT from its own last version on a PMT PID move (rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/export.rs:1037–1040, passed to encode_pat at 1051). PMT-only revisions increment laid.version while retaining the old PAT bytes. Start with PAT version 0, emit 31 PMT-only revisions (for example stream additions/removals), then move the PMT PID: the shared version wraps to 0 and encodes a different PAT mapping at the same version receivers already have. A receiver using version_number to detect changes can keep listening on the old PID after the exporter stops sending its PMT there. Track/increment the PAT's own last-laid version when its contents change, and add a regression with intervening PMT-only revisions, including this wraparound case.

Direction: updating the existing PSI state and waiting for begun copies to drain is a good fit; the version coupling above needs correction. No other actionable findings from the reviewed changes.

Verification: static inspection of catalog updates, PID reservation, PSI scheduling/versioning, and new tests, with an independent lifecycle/order review. I did not run tests or validate output with an external TS receiver.

P1 Badge Reject PMT moves that cannot be honored

When a catalog moves the PMT onto an occupied PID or names a PID at or above 0x1FFF, this branch warns and returns success, so the running export continues producing a layout that does not honor program.pmtPid. Root AGENTS.md explicitly requires “Error on unsupported or malformed input rather than warn and continue,” and the adjacent SI collision validation already rejects incompatible layouts. Return an error for an unfulfillable move instead of treating the catalog update as successfully supported.

Agreed: AGENTS.md says to refuse, not warn. Fixed in b93c166.

  • A move onto a PID that a stream in the catalog rides, that SI rides, or that the clock rides alone now fails the export. So does a move to 0x1FFF or above. a_pmt_moved_onto_a_stream_fails_the_export covers this.
  • A move onto a PID that a dropped stream is still draining on is a legitimate source pattern (PID reuse), so it waits for that stream to retire instead of failing. a_pmt_moved_onto_a_draining_stream_waits_for_it checks that every unit on the PID is a PES before the PAT naming it, and a PMT section after. That test fails without the wait.

(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)

The PAT took the PMT's next version whenever it changed, so 31 PMT-only
revisions and then a PMT move wrapped it onto the version a receiver
already held. Each table now steps from its own last laid version, and a
switch to another instance advances both.

Codex's P2 is right, and it's fixed in ea49757. The PAT now keeps its own version_number (Laid::pat_version). It steps from its own last laid version only when its network entry or PMT PID changes. The PMT steps only when its content changes. A switch to another instance advances both.

a_revision_takes_the_version_after_the_last_laid now covers the wrap: PMT version 31, PAT version 0, then a move gives the PAT version 1 and leaves the PMT at 31. The old shared version would have put the PAT at 0. One side effect is that a NIT change no longer bumps the PMT's version.

(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)

A move onto a PID the catalog gives a stream or SI, the clock's own PID,
or 0x1FFF and above now fails the export instead of warning and keeping
the PMT in place. A move onto a PID a dropped stream still drains on
waits for that stream to retire, so its packets all go out ahead of the
PAT naming the PID for the PMT.

The prior P2 PAT-version reuse finding is fixed: PAT and PMT advance independently from their own last-laid versions, both carry forward across an instance switch, and the added regression covers PMT version 31 / PAT version 0 followed by a PID move. No new actionable bugs found in this delta from 99ab11e (base unchanged).

The separate existing concern about warning and continuing on an unfulfillable PMT move remains unchanged; see the independent finding rather than a duplicate comment: #7182 (comment).

Direction: independent table-version state is the right, small correction to the existing PSI lifecycle. Verification: static inspection of the versioning, reset/handoff paths and updated tests only; I did not run tests or validate an external TS receiver.

Reviewed commit: b93c166

P2 — Revalidate a pending move when its draining stream returns (rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/export.rs:2835–2845). Drop listed stream B on PID X and request the PMT move to X; the new draining support leaves psi.moving = Some(X). If the next catalog re-adds B before it retires, update_catalog marks B cataloged again, but the equal-pending-target early return bypasses the occupied-PID error. B stays listed and keeps its PID; settle cannot remove a cataloged track, while follow_pmt waits for it forever (even after EOF). Output continues on the old PMT PID instead of rejecting this incompatible catalog. Revalidate collisions before treating an existing pending target as a no-op, and add a drop → move → re-add regression.

Prior findings: PAT-version reuse remains fixed. Direct invalid moves now fail as requested by the existing independent finding (#7182 (comment)); the case above is a remaining gap in the newly added deferred-move path, not a repeat of the former warning branch.

Direction: preserving legitimate PID reuse by draining first is sound; pending state must be revalidated against later catalogs. Verification: static inspection of the delta from ea49757, update/settle/PID-assignment paths and new tests, with independent confirmation. Tests and external receiver validation were not run.

A move waiting for a dropped stream to drain skipped the collision check
on later catalogs, so a catalog that gave the stream back its PID left
the move waiting forever. Each update now checks the target again until
the move applies.

The P2 from the review of b93c166 is right, and it's fixed in a572410. move_pmt now returns early only when the catalog names the PID the PMT already rides, which also cancels a waiting move. Otherwise it checks the target again on every catalog update until the move applies. a_stream_returning_to_the_pid_the_pmt_waits_for_fails_the_export covers drop, then move, then re-add. It fails on b93c166, where it times out waiting forever.

The prior P2 pending-move collision finding is fixed. A request for the pending target now rechecks current occupancy, so a returning listed stream is rejected; requesting the current PMT PID explicitly cancels the pending move. The new drop → move → re-add regression covers the reported case. Earlier PAT-version and direct invalid-move fixes remain intact.

No new actionable bugs found in the delta from b93c166 (base unchanged). Direction: removing the pending-target shortcut is a simple, appropriate correction without adding more lifecycle state.

Verification: static inspection of the changed validation/cancellation path and regression test, against the previously reviewed catalog-update and drain lifecycle. I did not run tests or external receiver validation.

The independent pending-move cancellation finding is fixed: #7182 (comment). When the catalog omits the program or records PMT PID 0, move_pmt now clears the pending target; subsequent drain/table completion cannot move to that withdrawn target. The new regression covers PID 0 arriving before a dropped stream drains. Earlier PAT-version, invalid-move and returning-stream collision fixes remain intact.

No new actionable bugs found in this substantive delta from a572410, excluding the previously checked equivalent main merge. Direction: canceling the pending intent at the existing catalog-validation boundary is the simple, appropriate fix.

Verification: static inspection of the changed cancellation path, surrounding move/follow/PID reservation logic and regression test. I did not run tests or external TS receiver validation.

Landing summary for 96ed828.

Change since the approved head (65266e2): CodeRabbit found that a PMT move waiting on a draining stream still completed after the catalog stopped recording a PMT PID (thread). move_pmt now cancels the waiting move on that path, so the PMT stays on its PID, as its doc says. The regression a_catalog_dropping_the_pmt_pid_cancels_a_waiting_move fails without the fix. Codex gave the new head 👍, and the automated review found nothing new.

Choices the maintainer approved:

  • The PAT keeps its own version counter, so a NIT change bumps only the PAT.
  • If the export can't follow a move, the export fails.
  • PIDs the PMT leaves stay off-limits for the rest of the instance.

Local checks: the moq-mux TS tests pass (1397). cargo fmt --check and clippy -D warnings pass on moq-mux. quest check --base origin/main passes.

Landing the reviewed head 539d1a07443ef08b490c3948f6f0c420aad56e12 under the maintainer-approved stale-hold takeover. The predecessor's base merge and test API rename are preserved; this attempt adds no source changes. Codex completed review of this head with no findings.

Local validation passed in the Nix environment, with BASH_ENV=/dev/null inherited by descendants and mbx enabled:

  • quest gate just ci origin/main: passed, including 4,201 selected Rust tests, JS checks/tests, draft validation, and repository checks.
  • quest gate just test interop --all: all checks passed.
  • Trusted installed quest check --base origin/main --branch quest/m1/ts-reliability/pat-lifecycle, run outside the head checkout after fetching base and head: 652 documents OK. Base: c3fcab120688cb00e592895c5930f601c34c5cdb.

Impact remains the approved TS export behavior: a PMT move follows a new PAT, with independent table versions and refusal of incompatible layouts. No public API or MoQ framing change. No additional decisions or follow-ups.
