feat(hang, publish): publish HLS segment records from the browser by default - #7367
A broadcast published from the browser through @moq/publish carried no per-rendition hls field or record tracks, so an edge could export native broadcasts (moq-mux publishes records by default) as HLS but not browser ones. Quest: quest/m2/js-hls.md.
Approach
@moq/hang/hls ports moq-mux's producer side: Segmenter cuts each track's segments on a pts grid (4 s default, or the smallest multiple of a hint at or past it), numbers its own records, and writes a zero-duration stop at a skipped group, a discontinuity, or the end. Recorder publishes them onto a compressed @moq/json window with moq-mux's track info and checkpoint size, and exposes the hls field to advertise once the duration is declared. A failed report or publish aborts the record track, never the media.
Container.Legacy.Producer takes an optional recorder and reports each frame, group end, and discontinuity marker, as moq-mux's container producer does.
@moq/publish creates <track>.hls beside every video and audio track (not text), hands the recorder to the encoders through rendition.hls(track), and folds the hls field into the catalog. Record subscribers count as demand under onDemand, like moq-mux's Lend. Each rendition's hlsHint (the video keyframe interval, the audio group duration) declares the duration when the track is created, as moq-video hints its GOP, so an on-demand broadcast advertises its records before anything is encoded.
Interop: a new hls records lane (in --tail, auto pass) publishes one fixed schedule from moq-mux and from @moq/hang under Node and Bun, with GOPs on and off the grid, a discontinuity, and a finish. The Rust reader's readout of declared durations and every record must match byte for byte. Ran locally: both runtimes pass.
Impact
@moq/hang: new ./hls export with Segmenter, Recorder, Config, DEFAULT_DURATION, and defaultName (the existing Consumer moves with it, and Hls from the root re-exports it).
@moq/hang/container: Legacy.Producer takes an optional third recorder argument.
@moq/json: Window.Producer.abort(err).
@moq/publish: BroadcastInput.hls (default true), Rendition.hls(track), Rendition.hlsHint. A broadcast now publishes <track>.hls tracks by default, and registering a name a rendition's record track holds throws.
No breaking change: every addition is optional, and Rendition's constructor is @internal.
Choices made without asking
hls: false opts out, mirroring catalog::Config::with_hls(None). Changing it restarts the network broadcast, like maxAge.
Rust's source-declared cuts, and the ceiling that only they reach, are not ported: no JS publisher declares boundaries, so the grid alone decides.
Duration hints: the video keyframe interval (its longest GOP) and the audio group duration. A zero or unbounded value hints 1 ms for both (the shared hlsHint in internal.ts), since any hint at or under the grid declares the 4 s grid. The hint is read when a track is created.
Name collisions: registering a name that a video or audio rendition's records hold throws, like replacement names. A record name already taken, by a rendition registered while hls was off or by an app's own track, leaves that rendition without records rather than down.
Alternatives
Shared JSON vectors checked by both suites, like moq-json's. The Plan asked for the interop suite, and the lane also covers the relay path and Rust reading JS-written records.
Unhinted JS records, like moq-mux's default. This deadlocks under onDemand: an exporter skips a rendition without hls, so it never subscribes to the records that would start encoding.
Follow-ups
A keyframeInterval raised on a live track keeps the declaration fixed at track creation, so its segments can outrun the declared target duration. moq-video has the same shape.
The browser publisher's interop cell doesn't assert its catalog's hls field. Today the lane checks @moq/hang under Node and Bun, and @moq/publish is covered by unit tests.
The m2 README filed this quest as "follow-on capability after the release contract is stable". Its Plan set no waiting condition and quest unblocked reported no blockers, so it went ahead.
@moq/net's "a peer close drains the overtaken fin/group" tests (js/net/src/lite/connection.test.ts) flake under full-suite load on main and can fail a land batch. This PR doesn't touch js/net.
Merge with main (after quest land stopped on merge_conflict)
moq-dev/moq#7238 made audio retain raw PCM and gate its own encode on the media track's demand, bypassing the broadcast's onDemand gate. Resolved so record readers still count as demand for both kinds: the broadcast gate keeps main's audio exemption and counts record readers for video, and the audio encoder now counts them too, through a shared internal wanted(). Regression test: "a record subscriber starts on-demand audio" (fails without the encoder change).
moq-dev/moq#7257 privatized Rendition's constructor into rendition-internal.ts; hlsHint, hls(track), and the recorder lookup moved there, passed through makeRendition.
moq-dev/moq#7027 moved moq-clock into kio::clock; the interop HLS client follows.
Local review finding fixed: an application aborting a media track directly left its records open. The broadcast now ends each recorder from its media track's closed state (abort on error, finish otherwise), replacing the encoder-error-only path. Regression test: "records end with their media however it closes".
Second eject (2026-11-01, quest land stopped on failed_checks)
The fixer's Cannot find module '@moq/libav' came from its own environment (the workspace's @moq/libav package wasn't built). It doesn't reproduce here: @moq/hang passes 534/534 with its libav tests.
Fix: merged origin/main (88e6990626) with no conflicts. No code change.
moq-dev/moq#7218 (Rust records stamped on the broadcast clock) is still open, not merged, so there is nothing to align with yet. JS already stamps records the way JS stamps its catalog groups: through Moq.Time.Timestamp.now(), which reads the single @moq/clock clock. JS has no second runtime clock to diverge from, so fix(mux)!: a broadcast stamps everything from one clock #7218's problem doesn't arise here.

Reviewer: Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, new session after the first main merge.
Round 1 on 1a355882dd2a0460feae50575b75ad5d12a5cc61: 1 finding (medium, js/publish/src/broadcast.ts: propagate media-track closure to its HLS recorder): fixed in cc0cfead70.
Round 2 on cc0cfead70bfc40497cfb624d250ca9c345454e5: no findings.
Head 0a007ef01b adds only a conflict-free merge of origin/main on top of cc0cfead70, so no new local review was needed (quest guide, Reviews). The online review on cc0cfead70 found nothing, and no review threads are open.
Earlier: Codex gpt-6.1-sol on 80c58a0 (no findings), and the online review on 1da9ebb, fixed in 80c58a0.
Checks
On 0a007ef01b, inside nix develop:
just ci origin/main: every module passes except two:
check flake fails while building github-runner (unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map: Operation not permitted). That's the host's nix sandbox; this PR touches no nix.
test js fails only in @moq/net ("a peer close drains the overtaken fin over moq-lite-0x", 3 to 4 failures per full-suite run). js/net matches main byte for byte. The file passes 57/57 three times when run alone, so it's a timing flake on main, not this PR.
The packages that --sequential skipped after the @moq/net failure pass when rerun: @moq/publish 307/307, plus p2p, pattern, qmux, room, sign, signals, video, watch, and moq-doc.
test/interop/interop.sh --tail (rust, js-native-node, js-native-bun): all checks pass, including hls records for js-native-node and js-native-bun.
Port moq-mux's HLS segmenter to @moq/hang as Hls.Segmenter and
Hls.Recorder, report each legacy-container group into it, and have
@moq/publish create a record track per video and audio track and
advertise the rendition's hls field once its duration is declared.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A rendition's hlsHint (the video keyframe interval, the audio group
duration) fixes each new track's segment duration when it's created, so
an on-demand broadcast advertises its records before anyone subscribes.
Registering a name a rendition's record track holds now throws.

Walkthrough
The change adds HLS segment record generation and publishing to the JavaScript media stack. Legacy producers can report media timing to a recorder, and broadcasts can expose HLS record tracks and metadata for audio and video. Record-track demand can activate on-demand encoding. New tests cover segmentation, publishing, and lifecycle behavior. New interop clients compare JavaScript records with Rust output.

One actionable issue remains: independently confirmed the existing P2 all-keyframe video discovery finding. With onDemand enabled and keyframeInterval set to zero, the encoder supplies a zero duration hint, Segmenter leaves the HLS declaration absent, and the exporter skips that rendition. No record subscription then starts encoding, so discovery stalls without a direct media subscriber. Normalize this supported configuration to a positive hint, as audio does, and add a regression exercising the real video encoder's on-demand catalog discovery. Referencing the existing thread rather than duplicating it inline.
No additional actionable findings in the reviewed changes. Checked segment/stop handling against the Rust implementation, recorder lifetime across demand gaps, catalog and track-name wiring, JSON window abort, and the interop fixtures/harness.
Scope and limits: GitHub-only static review of the full diff and relevant context. No builds, tests, browser encoding, or interop runs were executed. The new interop lane exercises the recorder directly, not the browser encoder's discovery path.
A zero keyframe interval hinted a zero HLS duration, which Segmenter
ignores, so an on-demand rendition never advertised the records whose
subscription would start it. Share audio's normalization: a zero or
unbounded group hints a millisecond, declaring the grid's duration.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The earlier P2 all-keyframe HLS discovery finding is fixed. Video now shares audio's positive hint normalization, so keyframeInterval: 0 declares the 4-second grid before media demand. The new regression checks catalog advertisement before encoding and activation when a record subscriber attaches.
No new actionable bugs found in this one-commit, four-file update. Sharing the existing normalization is a focused fix without additional lifecycle machinery; positive finite hints and audio behavior remain unchanged.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the delta and relevant registration/segmenter context. No builds, tests, browser encoding or interop runs were executed.

fixer result written
No changes were needed. The original failing GStreamer test passed eleven runs on the unchanged batch and one on the base alone. Its failure was unroutable; this PR does not change that in-memory routing path.
The touched JavaScript packages passed type checks, builds, unit tests, and API report checks. The JavaScript native HLS interop client type-checks, the Rust HLS interop example builds, and all 238 Rust CLI tests passed. Validation used the batch checkout; the pinned PR branch is unchanged.
A broader Rust suite also encountered moq-tokio::integration::backend::quic_client_close_drains_finished_track failing with subscribe failed: Unroutable; an isolated rerun passed. Both routing flakes should be followed up separately. No blame is assigned to this PR.
quest land watch: the merge queue removed this pull request at 0a007ef because it conflicts with main (merge_conflict).
The land fixer works on it in the background, and the watcher re-enqueues it at the back of the queue once it is fixed or judged flaky, or hands it back here with what it needs.
Merged the base publication-state refactor while preserving HLS record creation, catalog advertisement, demand gating, and record termination. Retained both branches’ tests and combined their rendition fixtures. Publish: 319 tests passed; Hang: 537; JSON: 180. CLI tests and the interop-hls example build/test passed; native JS type checking and bundling passed. Hang tests required copying the matching prebuilt LibAV artifact from the local Nix store. Protected paths contain only the unchanged results of the base merge.

Pass the final video content endpoint to the recorder during teardown.
181-185: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Pass the final video content endpoint to the recorder during teardown.
Video teardown calls producer.discontinuity() without an endpoint. Legacy.Producer then reports the final frame timestamp to Recorder, but Segmenter.end() requires the point where content extends beyond that frame’s start. The resulting stop record can truncate the final frame’s HLS range.
Provide the final frame’s content endpoint to the recorder at this boundary while preserving the existing no-end media discontinuity behavior.

Review comment at @js/hang/src/container/legacy.ts around lines 181 - 185:
Update the video teardown path so the recorder receives the final frame’s
content endpoint, not merely its start timestamp, when ending the segment.
Preserve the existing no-end behavior for media discontinuities, and keep the
`reached` calculation and `#recorder.end` call consistent with that distinction.

Preserve the publisher exit status.
The Rust publisher prints hls acknowledged before session.close().await?. A close error can therefore make the publisher exit nonzero after acknowledgement. harness_wait "$pid" || true discards that failure, so matching reader records can produce a false pass.

Review comment at @test/interop/interop.sh around lines 2388 - 2390:
Preserve the publisher’s exit status in the `harness_wait` call instead of
ignoring failures; set `why` when the publisher exits unsuccessfully while
retaining any existing reason, so an acknowledgement cannot mask a failed exit.

The queue failed while compiling moq-cli tests because moq-relay's Pacer::new was unused without its QUIC transport features. The constructor and its callers are unchanged from base, so no PR is blamed. After merging base, the fix compiles the constructor only for unit tests or the transport features that call it. CLI tests (291), relay tests (414), JavaScript tests (1036), JavaScript builds/type checks, and the Rust HLS example build passed. The CLI build used the already-installed ALSA pkg-config directory.
quest land watch: armed auto-merge on this pull request at 4f71ff8, so it joins the back of the merge queue once its required checks pass, with the land fixer's fix (codex / Codex): Merged base and cfg-gated Pacer::new to its existing callers (no behavior change); passed CARGO_BUILD_WARNINGS=deny RUSTC_WORKSPACE_WRAPPER=clippy-driver cargo nextest run --locked --tests -p moq-cli --features moq-cli/play,moq-cli/openh264 (291 tests, local ALSA PKG_CONFIG_PATH); CARGO_BUILD_WARNINGS=deny RUSTC_WORKSPACE_WRAPPER=clippy-driver cargo nextest run --locked --tests -p moq-relay (414 tests); cargo build --locked -p moq-cli --example interop-hls --features moq-cli/play,moq-cli/openh26.
No new actionable bugs found in the update since the last review, separating upstream merges from branch changes. The HLS wiring follows the upstream Publication/Slot refactor without changing the segmenter or record format; the earlier all-keyframe discovery fix remains intact.
The new build fix at rs/moq-relay/src/auth/caps.rs:91 is appropriately narrow: the constructor's cfg matches the QUIC caller, Linux io_uring module, and unit-test callers, rather than suppressing unused-code checks broadly. No new runtime behavior is introduced by that guard.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static comparison and caller/feature inspection. No builds, feature-matrix checks, tests, or browser/interop runs executed. This incremental review does not reassess the separate existing video-endpoint follow-up in review 5734783735.

Problem
A broadcast published from the browser through
@moq/publishcarried no per-renditionhlsfield or record tracks, so an edge could export native broadcasts (moq-mux publishes records by default) as HLS but not browser ones. Quest:quest/m2/js-hls.md.Approach
@moq/hang/hlsports moq-mux's producer side:Segmentercuts each track's segments on a pts grid (4 s default, or the smallest multiple of a hint at or past it), numbers its own records, and writes a zero-duration stop at a skipped group, a discontinuity, or the end.Recorderpublishes them onto a compressed@moq/jsonwindow with moq-mux's track info and checkpoint size, and exposes thehlsfield to advertise once the duration is declared. A failed report or publish aborts the record track, never the media.Container.Legacy.Producertakes an optional recorder and reports each frame, group end, and discontinuity marker, as moq-mux's container producer does.@moq/publishcreates<track>.hlsbeside every video and audio track (not text), hands the recorder to the encoders throughrendition.hls(track), and folds thehlsfield into the catalog. Record subscribers count as demand underonDemand, like moq-mux'sLend. Each rendition'shlsHint(the video keyframe interval, the audio group duration) declares the duration when the track is created, as moq-video hints its GOP, so an on-demand broadcast advertises its records before anything is encoded.hls recordslane (in--tail, auto pass) publishes one fixed schedule from moq-mux and from@moq/hangunder Node and Bun, with GOPs on and off the grid, a discontinuity, and a finish. The Rust reader's readout of declared durations and every record must match byte for byte. Ran locally: both runtimes pass.Impact
@moq/hang: new./hlsexport withSegmenter,Recorder,Config,DEFAULT_DURATION, anddefaultName(the existingConsumermoves with it, andHlsfrom the root re-exports it).@moq/hang/container:Legacy.Producertakes an optional thirdrecorderargument.@moq/json:Window.Producer.abort(err).@moq/publish:BroadcastInput.hls(defaulttrue),Rendition.hls(track),Rendition.hlsHint. A broadcast now publishes<track>.hlstracks by default, and registering a name a rendition's record track holds throws.Rendition's constructor is@internal.Choices made without asking
hls: falseopts out, mirroringcatalog::Config::with_hls(None). Changing it restarts the network broadcast, likemaxAge.hlsHintininternal.ts), since any hint at or under the grid declares the 4 s grid. The hint is read when a track is created.Alternatives
moq-json's. The Plan asked for the interop suite, and the lane also covers the relay path and Rust reading JS-written records.onDemand: an exporter skips a rendition withouthls, so it never subscribes to the records that would start encoding.Follow-ups
keyframeIntervalraised on a live track keeps the declaration fixed at track creation, so its segments can outrun the declared target duration. moq-video has the same shape.hlsfield. Today the lane checks@moq/hangunder Node and Bun, and@moq/publishis covered by unit tests.quest unblockedreported no blockers, so it went ahead.@moq/net's "a peer close drains the overtaken fin/group" tests (js/net/src/lite/connection.test.ts) flake under full-suite load on main and can fail a land batch. This PR doesn't touchjs/net.Merge with main (after
quest landstopped on merge_conflict)onDemandgate. Resolved so record readers still count as demand for both kinds: the broadcast gate keeps main's audio exemption and counts record readers for video, and the audio encoder now counts them too, through a shared internalwanted(). Regression test: "a record subscriber starts on-demand audio" (fails without the encoder change).Rendition's constructor intorendition-internal.ts;hlsHint,hls(track), and the recorder lookup moved there, passed throughmakeRendition.moq-clockintokio::clock; the interop HLS client follows.closedstate (abort on error, finish otherwise), replacing the encoder-error-only path. Regression test: "records end with their media however it closes".Second eject (2026-11-01,
quest landstopped on failed_checks)check rs(check jsandcheck shellwere cancelled). This PR's Rust change is one[[example]]entry for the interop client. The land fixer traced the rs failure to a stale rustdoc link in batch-mate moq-dev/moq#7258, which it fixed, and refactor(congestion)!: namespace configs and remove downcasting #7258 has since merged.Cannot find module '@moq/libav'came from its own environment (the workspace's@moq/libavpackage wasn't built). It doesn't reproduce here:@moq/hangpasses 534/534 with its libav tests.88e6990626) with no conflicts. No code change.Moq.Time.Timestamp.now(), which reads the single@moq/clockclock. JS has no second runtime clock to diverge from, so fix(mux)!: a broadcast stamps everything from one clock #7218's problem doesn't arise here.Review
