feat(net): pace relay ingest by the group's fastest reader - #7388
First slice of quest/m1/unbounded-groups/fastest-reader.md. With this, a relay's ingest stops reading a group's stream once it is more than 16 MB (half the 32 MB tail) past the group's fastest reader. Stream flow control then pushes back to the publisher. A per-session cap bounds the receive credit that paused streams hold. The quest file is rewritten to cover what remains.
Decisions
Settled by the maintainer on 2026-10-30:
How to cap the receive credit that paused streams hold.
Partition credit statically (size the stream window against the connection window).
✅ Pause under a per-connection budget: moq-net counts, per session, the credit paused groups hold, capped at about half the connection window. A group past the cap keeps reading and shedding.
The shape of the readiness future for origin producers.
✅ Make group::Producer::poll_ready(&self, waiter) -> Poll<()> public, plus async fn ready(&self): pending until a reader exists and the 16 MB window has room.
A write-side write_frame_paced.
Later, in m2, not this PR: instead of moq-quic granting MAX_STREAM_DATA automatically, a stream could be paused or given an explicit allow(fastest + 16 MB), so flow control never grants credit past the pacing window. This is recorded in quest/m2/receive-pool.md.
Summary
Byte-measured reader progress (rs/moq-net/src/model/pace.rs). Each frame entering a copy's log records where it ends on a cumulative byte scale, counting its payload plus its slot, as the live tail does.
Cursors fetch_max the end of the last frame they take, including a prefetched batch.
Shedding records the byte front.
The writer is paced only while front <= read < written and it is more than 16 MB past read. The check is a few atomic loads, with no lock and no log access.
A reader waiting on the writer never stalls it. This covers a reader that has taken every committed frame, one streaming the open frame, and one that skipped to a frame not yet written. So a frame larger than the window cannot deadlock against a whole-frame reader.
A reader that fell off is not waited on. If its next frame was shed, the writer stops waiting on it. Shedding under cache pressure wakes a parked writer.
A paused stream still sees a reset. A paused stream is not read, so it is watched for one instead. poll::RecvStream::poll_reset and poll::Chunks::poll_reset are new provided methods that default to pending forever. They wait for a peer reset or a connection close without taking bytes or granting credit. A paused reader polls it, and a reset fails the wait, so ingest aborts the group. moq-quic answers it through moq-tokio and moq-uring (received_reset, which is lease-aware), and the memory transport through its channel.
No reader, no pacing for ingest. A group with no reader never waits, and the last reader leaving or an abort wakes the writer.
The ingest gate has two parts, both in coding::Reader, so moq-lite, moq-transport subgroup, and FETCH ingest all pause:
poll_admit holds a frame back until its declared size plus its metadata fits the window. moq-transport objects that are empty with status 0 go through it too, for their properties. Admitting a frame trims the tail to fit it, so without this a large frame would shed bytes the fastest reader still wants.
The payload loop of poll_read_frame waits on group::Producer::poll_paced (crate-private) as the frame fills.
The credit cap (Decision 1).
transport::poll::Session::receive_window() is new and defaults to None. It returns a ReceiveWindow { connection, stream } and is read live, so a relay widening limits after the handshake is followed.
The boxed session (rs/moq-net/src/transport/boxed.rs) keeps one paused-credit counter. Each received stream holds a weak handle to it.
Before a stream pauses, it reserves its stream window. If that would push the total over half the connection window, it doesn't pause, and the group reads on and sheds. Resuming or dropping the stream returns its share.
A transport that reports no window never pauses a stream.
Window reporting.
moq-quic gains Connection::receive_window() and Connection::stream_receive_window(). The second returns the largest stream window ever in force, since credit already granted outlives a shrink.
moq-tokio's QUIC backend and moq-uring forward these. The memory transport reports an unbounded connection with its stream buffer.
Public readiness (Decision 2).group::Producer::poll_ready / ready() stay pending until a reader holds the group and the writer has room. A closed group is ready, so the next write surfaces why.
Docs: the moq-lite concept page's congestion section and the relay [cache] docs, both now covering the cap.
Choices made without asking
What a paused stream is charged. It is charged its whole stream window, because the session can't see what the transport has buffered for it. With moq-uring's defaults (4 MiB per stream, 128 MiB per connection), that allows 16 paused groups per connection.
No window, no pausing. quinn, iroh, qmux, browser WebTransport and the FFI adapters don't report a window yet, so their ingest never pauses. Unknown credit could stall the connection. The quest's remainder lists the reporting for these transports.
Where the budget lives. It sits inside the boxed session's Arc, and the per-stream hold sits inside the boxed stream's heap allocation. Session and stream layouts are unchanged, so no state machine grows. A stream that outlives its session holds only a Weak, so it never keeps the transport open.
The admission gate counts the next frame. An idle reader now holds 15 MB, not 16, before ingest pauses. The first integration test's range is 15..=18.
Public ready() doesn't take a size. That keeps the decided signature. A local frame larger than the room left still trims the publisher's tail; the doc says so, and the quest's remainder lists a sized check.
What progress counts. The pace scale counts payload, metadata (fields.heap()), and the frame slot, matching GroupState::trim, so a writer of tiny frames, or of frames carrying large properties, is bounded too.
Within-frame pacing. Taking or streaming the open frame counts as being at the edge, so there is no within-frame pacing against a streaming reader. A frame larger than the window grows unpaced, as today, until byte holes sheds segments.
A departing fastest reader. Progress is a monotonic max. If the fastest reader leaves while slower ones remain, the writer stays paced against where that reader got. This only makes it more lenient and never stalls it.
Waker slot. A group has one writer, so Pace keeps a single Mutex<Option<Waker>> instead of a WaiterList, to keep per-group overhead small.
Two pool-boundary tests moved.CACHE_OVERHEAD counts the new Pace (about 80 bytes per group). Two track.rs tests that sat exactly at a 10 KB pool boundary now use an 11 KB pool.
The reset watch defaults to never. Only transports that report a receive window pause a stream. So the provided poll_reset is pending forever, and only moq-tokio's and moq-uring's QUIC streams, the memory transport, and the test mock implement it. The quest's remainder notes that a transport gaining window reporting must also answer poll_reset.
Wake check. The fastest reader's wake check loads parked before swapping it, so a read with no parked writer pays one locked RMW, not two.
Cursor size unchanged.Cursor reaches access and pace through the group's existing Arc<Alive>.
Tests
All tests are deterministic: model tests poll by hand, and session tests use moq_clock simulated time.
model::pace tests:
the fastest reader paces the writer, and its read wakes it, while a slower reader is ignored;
an open frame counts toward the window;
a large frame waits to be admitted;
a local writer waits for a reader and for room;
no reader means no ingest wait;
a reader at the edge, or one that skipped ahead, never stalls the writer;
a reader that fell off is not waited on;
shedding and abort wake the writer;
metadata counts toward the window, both committed and when admitting a frame.
coding::reader tests: a reset ends a paused stream, whether it waits for admission or for the payload.
transport::boxed tests:
paused streams hold at most half the connection window, and resuming or dropping a stream returns its share;
a transport without a window, or a stream that outlived its session, never pauses.
moq-quic: the stream-window bound reports its peak.
tests/integration/fastest_reader.rs, over moq-lite-06, moq-lite-07-wip and moq-transport-22:
an idle reader holds the relay's copy at 15 to 18 MB of a 30 MB group, then receives every frame;
a 20 MB frame after 15 MB waits for an idle reader, which still receives every frame. This test fails without the admission gate;
a session past its credit cap reads all 30 MB on;
a slow reader ends Evicted while the fast one reads a 48 MB group in step;
a publisher's reset ends a paused relay copy while its reader takes nothing. This test times out without the reset watch.
quest gate just check origin/main passes on 27dfa2553f, including test rs and rs_shapes.
Benchmarks.group_paced (new, rs/moq-net/benches/group.rs) holds a writer at the window. Each round it polls poll_ready and parks while past it, then 1, 8, or 64 readers take one frame each. On this host it measured about 437 ns, 1.07 µs, and 2.85 µs per round. I ran an A/B against origin/main of group_read_frames, group_relay_frames, and group_contended, but the host was at load ~38 on 24 cores, and repeats swung by up to ±50% in both directions with no consistent sign. The comparison is inconclusive, so a quiet-host comparison stays in the quest's remainder. The reader-side cost is one relaxed load per frame or batch, plus a fetch_max only for the fastest reader. Pausing adds one Weak upgrade and one CAS per pause, not per frame.
Merge
Merged origin/main at 878e91b359 in cdf934617b, with no conflicts. The land queue ejected this PR because tests/integration/fastest_reader.rs still used moq_clock, which moq-dev/moq#7027 moved into kio::clock. 646e6e1a1c follows that rename: #[moq_clock::test] becomes #[kio::test], and moq_clock:: becomes kio::clock::. quest gate just ci origin/main passes on 646e6e1a1c, covering 10086 Rust tests plus the JS, markdown, quest, and other modules.
Coordination
moq-dev/moq#7576, still open, adds a requirement to this quest's decisions: TRACK_INFO and control messages always get connection credit, even while streams are parked waiting for TRACK_INFO. That is outside this slice, so it stays with the quest's remainder. Whichever of the two PRs merges second needs a local merge of the quest file.
moq-dev/moq#7339 (evicted refill) touches track.rs and doc/concept/moq-lite.md in other places. Its batch-fill follow-up, pacing across groups, stays open in the quest's remainder.
Follow-ups
The quest file keeps these:
receive-window reporting for the transports that report none yet;
a sized readiness check for local writers;
JS parity;
a two-relay chain test with memory measured near the window;
a quiet-host benchmark comparison against the base;

A session's ingest stops reading a group's stream once it is more than
16 MB (half the 32 MB tail) past the first frame the group's fastest
reader has not taken, so stream flow control pushes back to the
publisher. Readers report the frames they take; each log entry records
its cumulative byte end, so the writer measures bytes, lock-free.

Readers report the byte end of the last frame they take, shedding records
the byte front, and the writer compares the three without touching the
log, so group::Producer keeps its size. Docs and the quest's remainder
follow.

Keeps Cursor and Prefetch at their old size, so the session state
machines' layouts (and their large_enum_variant expectations on wasm32)
are unchanged.

A reader parked on a frame the writer has yet to commit, wherever it
skipped to, reports the edge, and shedding past the fastest reader under
cache pressure wakes a parked writer.

Fastest-reader pacing
feat(net): pace relay ingest by the group's fastest reader
Oct 30, 2026
Each stream a session's ingest pauses to pace a group's writer reserves
its stream window from a per-session budget of half the connection
window, read live from the new poll::Session::receive_window. A stream
that would exceed it keeps reading and shedding, and a transport that
reports no window never pauses. moq-quic reports its windows through
moq-tokio and moq-uring.
group::Producer::poll_ready and ready() are now public: pending until a
reader holds the group and the 16 MB window has room.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Admitting a frame trims the live tail to fit its declared size, so a
large frame could shed what the fastest reader still wants before the
payload gate ran. Ingest now waits on the declared size first, under the
same per-session credit cap. moq-quic reports the largest stream window
ever in force, since credit granted outlives a shrink.

Walkthrough
The change adds fastest-reader pacing to group writers and ingest paths. Readers report progress, and writers wait when data exceeds the pacing window. Receive streams can pause under a per-session receive-credit cap and poll for resets while paused. Transport implementations report receive-window limits and support reset polling. Tests and benchmarks cover pacing, credit limits, resets, and reader eviction. Documentation describes pacing behavior and remaining work.
Merge Risk: Low · up to bea3f
The new docs say relay ingest is paced for every hop, but pacing only applies to transports that report a receive window. Operators on other transports could expect backpressure they won't get. The code changes show no concrete failure. Merge is low risk once the two doc paragraphs name the covered transports.

Actionable issue: Confirmed the existing upstream-reset finding, rather than duplicating it inline. rs/moq-net/src/coding/reader.rs:486 and :420-423 can park before polling the transport; lite/subscriber.rs:1000-1007 checks local aborts but discovers a remote stream reset only through ingest. With an idle reader holding the pacing gate, a publisher's reset consequently does not terminate the received group, and Consumer::finished() can keep waiting. Keep reset/error observation independent of payload pacing and test a reset while admission and payload are paused.
Direction: Shared admission/payload gating and a session-level credit budget are appropriate boundaries and avoid duplicating pacing across protocol implementations. The public readiness API is additive and the wire format is unchanged. Preserve that separation when fixing reset propagation; do not unblock it with a timeout. The existing benchmark request also remains relevant to the new shared reader-progress hot path.
Verification: static review of the changed pacing, ingestion, credit accounting, transport forwarding and tests. I did not run tests or benchmarks; the PR's reported runs were not independently reproduced.
A paced ingest stops reading its stream, so a publisher's reset went
unseen until the group's reader moved. `poll::RecvStream::poll_reset`
(and `poll::Chunks::poll_reset`) wait for a reset without taking bytes
or granting credit; a paused reader polls it and fails the group.
moq-quic answers it through moq-tokio and moq-uring, and the memory
transport through its channel. The default never completes, which suits
a transport that reports no receive window, since its streams never
pause.

…rked
`group_paced` keeps a writer at the pacing window over 1, 8, and 64
readers, so the per-read progress report and the park and wake show up
together. The fastest reader's wake check now loads `parked` before
swapping it, so a read with no parked writer costs one locked RMW, not
two.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The live tail charges a frame's payload, metadata, and slot, but the
pace scale and frame admission left the metadata out, so frames whose
properties outweigh their payloads could fill the tail and shed bytes
the fastest reader still wanted before ingest paused. Both now charge
it, and admission takes the frame's header to do so.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An object with no payload and status 0 skipped the admission gate, so a
stream of them with large property blocks could fill the live tail past
the fastest reader. It now waits in `Admit` like any other object, and
finishes as soon as it is admitted.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Merged origin/main. The only conflict was the FrameIngest::poll / GroupIngest::poll signatures, resolved by keeping both sides.
Upstream reset while paced (thread): a paused stream is now watched through the new provided poll::RecvStream::poll_reset / poll::Chunks::poll_reset, implemented for moq-tokio and moq-uring QUIC and for the memory transport. Unit and integration tests were added on lite-06, lite-07-wip, and moq-transport-22.
Hot-path benchmark (thread): group_paced was added. The A/B against main was noise-dominated on the loaded host, so a quiet-host comparison stays in the quest's remainder. The wake check now skips the locked swap when no writer is parked.
Local review (Codex, 3 rounds): metadata now counts toward the pace window and admission, empty moq-transport objects are admitted for their properties, and shrinking live limits was refuted because no runtime caller shrinks them.
Checks:just check origin/main and quest check pass on the head.
Decisions I took under the maintainer's overnight authorization:
The reset watch is an additive provided method on the public transport traits, defaulting to never, rather than a lease probe. A lease probe would advance moq-quic stream credit and undo the back-pressure.
The shrinking-limits finding is deferred, not fixed.
The benchmark finding is closed with a new bench and an honest noisy A/B rather than blocking on a quiet host.

No new actionable bugs found in the update. The previously reported paused-ingest reset issue is addressed: both admission and payload waits now watch resets independently, with forwarding through the supported transports and focused unit/integration coverage. Metadata accounting and admission of empty status-0 objects also fit the existing pacing model.
Direction: the reset watch fixes the cause without consuming payload or granting credit, preserving backpressure. The additive transport methods do not change the wire. The new multi-reader group_paced benchmark addresses the missing coverage; the reported noisy A/B remains inconclusive, not evidence of zero overhead.
Verification: static review of the follow-up diff and relevant transport/reset paths. Tests and benchmarks were not run or independently reproduced.

codex / Codex land fixer: This maintainer pick already used its mechanical fi·x attempt. Run /quest-iterate to diagnose the repeated failure, then pick it again.
quest land watch: the merge queue removed this pull request at 646e6e1 because it conflicts with main (merge_conflict).
The land fixer works on it in the background, and the watcher re-enqueues it at the back of the queue once it is fixed or judged flaky, or hands it back here with what it needs.
Resolved the two adjacent-addition conflicts in reader.rs by preserving the PR pacing trait and reset test alongside the base small-frame copying constant and test. No implementation logic was changed beyond the base merge. All-target checking and doc tests passed for moq-net, moq-quic, moq-tokio, and moq-uring; nextest passed all 4,700 tests (41 skipped). The initial plain cargo test invocation encountered a shared-process global tracing subscriber collision in setup::tests::credentials_stay_out_of_traces; that test passed with nextest process isolation.

State which transports the pacing covers.
The paragraph says the relay stops reading a stream once it is 16 MB past the fastest reader. It does not say this holds only for transports that report a receive window. The quest file lists quinn, iroh, qmux, browser WebTransport, and the FFI adapters as not reporting one. On those transports ingest never pauses. An operator reading this page cannot tell which connections get pacing.
Add one clause that names the covered transports, or states that others receive and shed unpaced.

Update the 16 MB pacing paragraph to state which transports it covers, using the
established receive-window capability to define the boundary; explicitly say
transports that do not report a receive window continue receiving and shedding
without this pacing.

State the conditions of the pacing claim.
This paragraph says "Each hop" stops reading at the 16 MB window. Per the quest, only moq-quic through moq-tokio and moq-uring, plus the memory transport, report a receive window. The following paths do not pause ingest yet:
quinn, iroh, qmux, and browser WebTransport
the FFI adapters
JS (no parity yet)
The page does not say this, so it overstates what ships.
State the covered implementations, or say that other hops receive and shed unpaced. Keep the edit inside this paragraph.

Qualify the 16 MB per-hop pacing claim in the long-group paragraph: state that
it applies to moq-quic through moq-tokio, moq-uring, and the memory transport,
which report a receive window. Clarify that other implementations receive and
shed without this pacing, keeping the edit within this paragraph.

quest/m1/unbounded-groups/fastest-reader.md. With this, a relay's ingest stops reading a group's stream once it is more than 16 MB (half the 32 MB tail) past the group's fastest reader. Stream flow control then pushes back to the publisher. A per-session cap bounds the receive credit that paused streams hold. The quest file is rewritten to cover what remains.Decisions
Settled by the maintainer on 2026-10-30:
group::Producer::poll_ready(&self, waiter) -> Poll<()>public, plusasync fn ready(&self): pending until a reader exists and the 16 MB window has room.write_frame_paced.MAX_STREAM_DATAautomatically, a stream could be paused or given an explicitallow(fastest + 16 MB), so flow control never grants credit past the pacing window. This is recorded inquest/m2/receive-pool.md.Summary

Each frame entering a copy's log records where it ends on a cumulative byte scale, counting its payload plus its slot, as the live tail does.fetch_maxthe end of the last frame they take, including a prefetched batch.front <= read < writtenand it is more than 16 MB pastread. The check is a few atomic loads, with no lock and no log access.poll::RecvStream::poll_resetandpoll::Chunks::poll_resetare new provided methods that default to pending forever. They wait for a peer reset or a connection close without taking bytes or granting credit. A paused reader polls it, and a reset fails the wait, so ingest aborts the group. moq-quic answers it through moq-tokio and moq-uring (received_reset, which is lease-aware), and the memory transport through its channel.coding::Reader, so moq-lite, moq-transport subgroup, and FETCH ingest all pause:poll_admitholds a frame back until its declared size plus its metadata fits the window. moq-transport objects that are empty with status 0 go through it too, for their properties. Admitting a frame trims the tail to fit it, so without this a large frame would shed bytes the fastest reader still wants.poll_read_framewaits ongroup::Producer::poll_paced(crate-private) as the frame fills.transport::poll::Session::receive_window()is new and defaults toNone. It returns aReceiveWindow { connection, stream }and is read live, so a relay widening limits after the handshake is followed.rs/moq-net/src/transport/boxed.rs) keeps one paused-credit counter. Each received stream holds a weak handle to it.Connection::receive_window()andConnection::stream_receive_window(). Arc, and the per-stream hold sits inside the boxed stream's heap allocation. Session and stream layouts are unchanged, so no state machine grows. A stream that outlives its session holds only aWeak, so it never keeps the transport open.15..=18.ready()doesn't take a size. That keeps the decided signature. A local frame larger than the room left still trims the publisher's tail; the doc says so, and the quest's remainder lists a sized check.fields.heap()), and the frame slot, matchingGroupState::trim, so a writer of tiny frames, or of frames carrying large properties, is bounded too.Pacekeeps a singleMutex<Option<Waker>>instead of aWaiterList, to keep per-group overhead small.CACHE_OVERHEADcounts the newPace(about 80 bytes per group). Twotrack.rstests that sat exactly at a 10 KB pool boundary now use an 11 KB pool.poll_resetis pending forever, and only moq-tokio's and moq-uring's QUIC streams, the memory transport, and the test mock implement it. The quest's remainder notes that a transport gaining window reporting must also answerpoll_reset.parkedbefore swapping it, so a read with no parked writer pays one locked RMW, not two.Cursorreachesaccessandpacethrough the group's existingArc<Alive>.Tests

group_paced(new,rs/moq-net/benches/group.rs) holds a writer at the window. Each round it pollspoll_readyand parks while past it, then 1, 8, or 64 readers take one frame each. On this host it measured about 437 ns, 1.07 µs, and 2.85 µs per round. I ran an A/B againstorigin/mainofgroup_read_frames,group_relay_frames, andgroup_contended, but the host was at load ~38 on 24 cores, and repeats swung by up to ±50% in both directions with no consistent sign. The comparison is inconclusive, so a quiet-host comparison stays in the quest's remainder. The reader-side cost is one relaxed load per frame or batch, plus afetch_maxonly for the fastest reader. Pausing adds oneWeakupgrade and one CAS per pause, not per frame.Merge

moq-dev/moq#7576, still open, adds a requirement to this quest's decisions: TRACK_INFO and control messages always get connection credit, even while streams are parked waiting for TRACK_INFO.
