perf(hang): keep a bulk max-delay skip linear in buffered groups - #7523
Benchmark: new js/hang/bench/buffered.ts drives Container.Consumer (Legacy format, stamped µs timestamps on an accepted track, as a hang publisher writes them). It sweeps buffered groups {1, 16, 256, 1024} × frames per group {1, 30}, then publishers {1, 4} × players {1, 8} at 64×30, across four scenarios:
steady: the reader is parked at the live edge. ns_per_op is the write→read frame delay.
lookahead: in-order groups, all decoded before the drain.
sparse: shuffled arrival with a missing sequence between every pair of groups.
burst: G×F buffered, then the max delay drops to 0 and one arrival skips them all. Only that arrival is timed, per skipped group.
Every case checks its exact buffered ranges, timestamp order, and payloads, and that skipped groups are closed. gaps and warnings are output columns, so variants must match on them. Small cases repeat to ≥8192 ops, so Chromium's coarse clock still resolves them.
Coverage: the benchmark runs nightly in Bun (just js buffered-bench, in sh/gh/nightly.sh's js leg) and in Chromium (bench/browser/micro.ts --bench buffered, added to the bench-browser smoke lane in run.sh). The micro harness resolves the consumer from each variant's checkout, as it does for ledger. Timing does not gate anything.
Fix: a bulk skip in #checkMaxDelay rescanned every buffered group for each group it skipped (~G²/2 visits). After the first skip it now reads suffix extrema from one backward pass, so the loop is O(G + K). The first check is the same single scan as before, with no allocation, so the common no-skip path is unchanged. The work is equivalent because a skip removes only #groups[0] and nothing else mutates the remaining groups inside the loop. A new test pins a span that reaches past the new oldest group: group 2 starts below group 1. It passes on both main and this branch.
Warming skip:moq-dev/moq#7518, merged after this PR's last merge, added a backlog-start check inside the same loop. It called #startTarget, which rescans every group for the live edge, so a bulk skip before the first read with a nonzero warmup or min delay went quadratic again. The loop already holds that edge as the span's max, so it now passes max in (#startTarget(reach, known?), with the scan split into #liveEdge()). The skip decisions are identical. The bench's burst case has zero warmup, so its reach is zero and never reaches this path. A scratch run (Bun, 1-frame groups 10 ms apart, 100 ms warmup, max delay dropped to 1.5 s before the first read) skipped 3,936 of 4,096 groups in about 21 ms before the fix and about 1.6-1.9 ms after, with the same skip count.
Quest: the quest file is deleted, and the stale link and numbering in quest/m2/audit-perf.md are fixed.
Public API and wire impact: none.

aa is the same bundle as current, so aa/base is a second sample of the candidate, not a null control. The one-arrival skip of 1024 buffered groups drops from about 2.2-2.7 ms of main-thread work to about 0.2-0.4 ms. Every other case stays within the host's A/A spread, which is wide on this shared machine. Publishers × players scale linearly per player (4.3-5.2 µs per frame per player at 64×30), with no cross-consumer effect.

#updateBuffered owns 40-60% of allocations at large G, mostly the per-call ranges array. The Signal deep-compare of buffered scales with the range count.
Choices made without asking
Fixture timestamps: the fixture stamps frames on an accepted µs track. A first draft used an un-accepted, unstamped Track.Producer. That made @moq/net's Subscriber.#drift walk the whole retained timeline on every read (74% of steady-state CPU at 1024 groups), which says nothing about the hang consumer. That transport behavior is listed under follow-ups.
Instrumented counts are evidence only: the operation counts come from scratch instrumented copies and are not committed. The nightly series is timing plus the deterministic gaps/warnings columns.
Merge with renamed APIs:moq-dev/moq#7311 replaced the maxDelay prop with Delay { min, max }, and moq-dev/moq#7597 moved subscriptions to subscribe({ delay: { max } }) and the type to Track.Delay. The bench and the span test use both. The span test reads one frame before it lowers the max delay, so the age skip runs past the start-warming guard. It expects the gap the skipped media leaves before group 3. The micro harness now picks the bench's directory per benchmark (js/hang/bench for buffered) on top of main's generic ../src/ resolver. sh/gh/nightly.test.py now finds each browser-smoke bench in any js/*/bench, not only js/net/bench. moq-dev/moq#6949 (queued) touches only js/net, not these files.
No new bench row for the warming path: the fix is verified by the scratch run above, not by a nightly row, so the bench's 36-row series stays unchanged.
Skip warnings stay: the bulk-skip warning stays one summary per catch-up, as consumer.skips.test.ts already pins.
Decisions
Per-frame O(buffered groups) scans: accept the measured result, or pursue an incremental candidate? In Chromium the scans in #look, #updateBuffered and #checkMaxDelay cost nothing measurable up to 64 buffered groups, show from 256, and grow large at 1024. Only transient multi-second backlogs reach that depth.
✅ A. Accept it as a measured no-win, and keep the benchmark as the nightly guard. The quest is deleted, as this PR already does. (Maintainer, 2026-11-01.)
B. Keep the quest open for an incremental #updateBuffered/dirty-group #look candidate.
C. Same as A, plus a separate low-priority quest for the incremental candidate.
Follow-ups
@moq/netSubscriber.#drift (js/net/src/track.ts) walks the entire timeline on every read when the track's info is undefined, because the newest-stamped-group search never breaks. Untimed accepted tracks skip the walk. Worth checking whether a real subscriber can sit in the un-accepted state, and with how much history.
Checks
On head 30fb2822df, merged with main bf5e2b0b9b: nix develop --command just check origin/main passes (biome, js check and test, markdown, gh, bench, quest, shell). bun hang/bench/buffered.ts prints all 36 rows, and its self-checks pass. A one-round Chromium run, bench/browser/micro.ts --bench buffered --rounds 1 current aa, completes, and its A/A bundles match. quest check --base origin/main passes.

Add a buffered-group benchmark sweeping groups x frames per group and
publishers x players across steady, lookahead, sparse out-of-order and
burst-skip arrivals, in Bun nightly and the Chromium micro lane.
#checkMaxDelay rescanned every buffered group for each group it
skipped, so a bulk skip of G groups visited ~G^2/2 groups. After the
first skip it now reads suffix extrema from one backward pass.

Browser buffered-group bookkeeping scales with changed data
perf(hang): keep a bulk max-delay skip linear in buffered groups
Nov 1, 2026
Main's Delay { min, max } replaced the maxDelay prop. The span test now reads
one frame first, so the age skip runs past the start's warming guard, and
expects the gap the skipped media leaves before the retained group.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The consumer now reuses suffix timestamp spans when checking whether to skip buffered groups. A regression test covers groups with non-monotonic timestamps. The new buffered-consumer benchmark exercises four read and arrival scenarios and validates frames, ranges, gaps, skips, and warnings. Browser smoke and nightly benchmark runs now include the fixture. Benchmark documentation and performance-survey tracking were updated.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 71826
The consumer optimization has no established blocking defect. The benchmark can miss some playback regressions, so merging is reasonable with follow-up coverage improvements.

No actionable bugs found. The lazy suffix-extrema pass preserves the original span calculation while avoiding repeated scans after a skip; the synchronous discard loop leaves the remaining groups unchanged, and fault-triggered cleanup exits the loop. Keeping this state local to one catch-up is simpler than maintaining persistent extrema through every decode/read. The non-monotonic-span test and buffered-group benchmark cover the important optimization boundary. No public API or wire change.
Verification limits: GitHub source/diff inspection only, including surrounding consumer logic and benchmark/nightly wiring. I did not run tests or reproduce the reported browser measurements.

Bulk-skip fix: Consumer.#checkMaxDelay now scans the buffered groups once on the first skip and then reads suffix extrema from a single backward pass (#spans(), new Spans interface), turning a bulk max-delay skip from ~G²/2 visits into O(G + K). The no-skip path is unchanged (one allocation-free scan).
Benchmark fixture: new js/hang/bench/buffered.ts drives the container consumer across steady/lookahead/sparse/burst, sweeping groups × frames then publishers × players, with exact range/order/payload/closure self-checks and gaps/warnings output columns.
Benchmark wiring: bench/browser/micro.ts gains the buffered variant (36 rows) and redirects the consumer/legacy modules per variant; bench/browser/run.sh, sh/gh/nightly.sh, js/justfile, and bench/README.md register the new fixture.
Test: consumer.skips.test.ts pins the span-over-all-remaining-groups behavior with a group that starts below its predecessor, guarding against tracking only the new oldest group's own start.
Quest bookkeeping: deletes the hang-buffered.md quest, drops its survey link, and renumbers audit-perf.md items plus the "specializes item N's MKV work" reference.
I verified the fix is behavior-equivalent: the suffix array is built over #groups already stripped of g0, index skipped - 1 maps to the extrema over [g_skipped..] that the old per-iteration rescan produced, and nothing inside the loop mutates the remaining groups. Locally: bun test src/container/consumer.skips.test.ts passes (4/4), bun hang/bench/buffered.ts completes all 36 rows with its self-checks passing, biome check is clean on the four changed TS files, and tsc --noEmit passes in js/hang.
…survey/hang-buffered
Resolve the buffered bench onto main's micro harness (bandwidth, replay,
resume-history), keep both the backlog-start tests and the span test, move
the bench and test subscriptions to `delay: { max }` (#7597), and drop the
hang-buffered item from audit-perf's renumbered list.

#7518's backlog-start check recomputed the live edge over every buffered
group on each skip, making a bulk skip before the first read quadratic
again. The loop already holds that edge as the span's max, so pass it in.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…benches in any package
#7597 moved the delay type to `Track.Delay`. The nightly coverage test read
every browser smoke bench from `js/net/bench`, but `buffered` lives in
`js/hang/bench`.

No new actionable issue found. Accounting for main's warming and delay API changes, reusing the current suffix maximum preserves the start target while avoiding repeated scans.

Made a warming bulk max-delay skip O(1): #checkMaxDelay now passes its already-computed span max into #startTarget(reach, known?) instead of rescanning for the live edge, with the scan split out into #liveEdge(). Behavior is unchanged since max is exactly the max of group.latest the old scan produced.
Retyped the buffered bench and the skip test to Track.Delay after main moved the type and the subscription shape changed to subscribe({ delay: { max } }).
Made the nightly JS-coverage test find each browser smoke bench in any js/*/bench package, not only js/net/bench, since buffered lives under js/hang.
I re-derived the warming fix: on the #edge === undefined branch both min and max are already defined (guarded above), max equals #liveEdge() over the current #groups, and reach === 0 short-circuits before known is read, so every skip decision is identical to the previous per-iteration rescan. #liveEdge() remains live via #reachStart and the post-skip block. Locally: bun test src/container/consumer.skips.test.ts passes (7/7), tsc --noEmit -p js/hang/tsconfig.json clean, biome check clean on the three changed TS files, and python3 sh/gh/nightly.test.py NightlyTest.test_every_js_bench_runs_nightly passes.

Reconciled the benchmark registry with main's benchmarks map ({ entry, rows }), re-registering buffered with its full js/hang/bench/buffered.ts entry and rows.
Added the dir constant and generalized the bundle onResolve hook from a hardcoded js/net/bench to /${dir}/, so buffered's ../src/ imports resolve to each variant's js/hang/src.
I traced the merge resolution: for non-frames benches the entry is now resolve(import.meta.dir, "../..", selected.entry), dir matches the entry's directory for every registered benchmark, and buffered.ts's ../src/container/* imports resolve to root/js/hang/src/.... The registration is intact across micro.ts, run.sh, sh/gh/nightly.sh, js/justfile, and bench/README.md. python3 sh/gh/nightly.test.py passes (14 tests). sh/gh/test-inventory.test.py cannot run in this environment (no just on PATH), but micro.ts names the full js/hang/bench/buffered.ts path so the inventory treats it as named, and the nightly recipe reaches it.
In a lookahead run, every group is written before it is drained, and the sequence has no missing groups. A gap read reports a discontinuity the fixture does not contain. drain counts these reads and returns the total, but measure never checks the total. A lookahead run that reports gaps still exits 0. The count appears only in the gaps CSV column.
If the current lookahead rows already report gaps, the new check fails on those rows. Investigate that result first.
Suggested fix

Check payload bytes in the steady and burst read assertions.
The steady and burst read checks compare only the frame kind and timestamp. A consumer that returns the expected timestamp with wrong payload bytes passes both checks. The lookahead and sparse cases already check the first payload byte through drain, so these two cases are the gap.
The fix applies the same first-byte check that drain uses:

Add a baseline comparison for the buffered benchmark's gaps and warnings.
js/hang/bench/buffered.ts prints gaps and warnings for each case but never compares them. bench/browser/micro.ts checks only the row count. A skip-path change that alters these counts does not fail the run.
The browser lane in bench/browser/run.sh runs only current and aa. These bundles are identical, so their counts cannot reveal a regression in the skip path. Add a baseline variant, such as before, to the lane. Then compare gaps and warnings for matching cases between the baseline and current in bench/browser/micro.ts. Fail the run on a mismatch.
Confirm that these counts are stable across rounds before making the comparison strict. Otherwise, normal variation can fail the run.

Update the buffered benchmark output and browser benchmark flow to include a

variation makes strict checks unreliable.

It sweeps buffered groups {1, 16, 256, 1024} × frames per group {1, 30}, then publishers {1, 4} × players {1, 8} at 64×30, across four scenarios:steady: the reader is parked at the live edge.ns_per_opis the write→read frame delay.lookahead: in-order groups, all decoded before the drain.sparse: shuffled arrival with a missing sequence between every pair of groups.burst: G×F buffered, then the max delay drops to 0 and one arrival skips them all. Only that arrival is timed, per skipped group.Every case checks its exact buffered ranges, timestamp order, and payloads, and that skipped groups are closed.
gapsandwarningsare output columns, so variants must match on them. Small cases repeat to ≥8192 ops, so Chromium's coarse clock still resolves them.Coverage: the benchmark runs nightly in Bun (
just js buffered-bench, insh/gh/nightly.sh'sjsleg) and in Chromium (bench/browser/micro.ts --bench buffered, added to thebench-browsersmoke lane inrun.sh). The micro harness resolves the consumer from each variant's checkout, as it does forledger. Timing does not gate anything.Fix: a bulk skip in
#checkMaxDelayrescanned every buffered group for each group it skipped (~G²/2 visits). After the first skip it now reads suffix extrema from one backward pass, so the loop is O(G + K). The first check is the same single scan as before, with no allocation, so the common no-skip path is unchanged. The work is equivalent because a skip removes only#groups[0]and nothing else mutates the remaining groups inside the loop. A new test pins a span that reaches past the new oldest group: group 2 starts below group 1. It passes on both main and this branch.Warming skip: moq-dev/moq#7518, merged after this PR's last merge, added a backlog-start check inside the same loop. It called
#startTarget, which rescans every group for the live edge, so a bulk skip before the first read with a nonzero warmup or min delay went quadratic again. The loop already holds that edge as the span'smax, so it now passesmaxin (#startTarget(reach, known?), with the scan split into#liveEdge()). The skip decisions are identical. The bench'sburstcase has zero warmup, so its reach is zero and never reaches this path. A scratch run (Bun, 1-frame groups 10 ms apart, 100 ms warmup, max delay dropped to 1.5 s before the first read) skipped 3,936 of 4,096 groups in about 21 ms before the fix and about 1.6-1.9 ms after, with the same skip count.Quest: the quest file is deleted, and the stale link and numbering in
quest/m2/audit-perf.mdare fixed.Public API and wire impact: none.

micro.ts --bench buffered --rounds 5 base=main current=. aa=., median ns/op, ratio median [min-max] over 5 alternating rounds)aais the same bundle ascurrent, soaa/baseis a second sample of the candidate, not a null control. The one-arrival skip of 1024 buffered groups drops from about 2.2-2.7 ms of main-thread work to about 0.2-0.4 ms. Every other case stays within the host's A/A spread, which is wide on this shared machine. Publishers × players scale linearly per player (4.3-5.2 µs per frame per player at 64×30), with no cross-consumer effect.Attribution (Chromium CDP: CPU profile, sampled allocations with collected objects included, traced GC; main)

Track.Producer. That made@moq/net'sSubscriber.#driftwalk the whole retained timeline on every read (74% of steady-state CPU at 1024 groups), which says nothing about the hang consumer. That transport behavior is listed under follow-ups.gaps/warningscolumns.maxDelayprop withDelay { min, max }, and moq-dev/moq#7597 moved subscriptions tosubscribe({ delay: { max } })and the type toTrack.Delay. The bench and the span test use both. The span test reads one frame before it lowers the max delay, so the age skip runs past the start-warming guard. It expects the gap the skipped media leaves before group 3. The micro harness now picks the bench's directory per benchmark (js/hang/benchforbuffered) on top of main's generic../src/resolver.sh/gh/nightly.test.pynow finds each browser-smoke bench in anyjs/*/bench, not onlyjs/net/bench. moq-dev/moq#6949 (queued) touches onlyjs/net, not these files.consumer.skips.test.tsalready pins.Decisions

@moq/netSubscriber.#drift(js/net/src/track.ts) walks the entire timeline on every read when the track's info is undefined, because the newest-stamped-group search never breaks. Untimed accepted tracks skip the walk. Worth checking whether a real subscriber can sit in the un-accepted state, and with how much history.Checks
