chore(deps): remove redundant build, schema, and codec helpers - #7601
Build and runtime manifests retain helpers with no consumer or with an existing replacement. The off-cycle dependency quest also needs measured costs and a fresh judgment of the recurring audit's keep list.
Approach
Removed
Replacement and measured cost
rimraf in 19 JS builds
rm -rf dist, supported by Bun's cross-platform shell. 261,819 installed bytes; warm nested-output deletion median 24.33 ms through its Bun CLI versus 2.41 ms through bun exec rm -rf (30 runs). No exclusive-transitive saving claimed.
@zod/mini
Its JS/type entrypoints only re-export zod/mini. Keep direct zod declarations in all six runtime and two peer consumers, including @moq/room's metadata schema, which main added on @zod/mini after this branch started. Removes 5,615 installed bytes, no exclusive transitives.
async-mutex
Unused @moq/net runtime declaration, with no source, script, test or emitted-type consumer. Removes 63,046 installed bytes; shared tslib stays.
hang's regex
Existing numeric helper plus fixed AV1 field parsing. Normal/build closure 183 to 179 packages; regex/automata/syntax/aho-corasick cost 3.12 s summed compiler-unit time and 23,447,622 rlib bytes in a fresh standalone Nix dev build. Other consumers retain them in Cargo.lock. These are dependency costs, not workspace wall-time savings.
Root Bun registry names fall from 729 to 726. Every retained lock resolution and integrity is unchanged; no upgrades. Cargo.lock changes only hang's direct edge. Each dependency removal has its own commit.
Refresh the recurring audit's baselines, justified keep list, duplicate-chain guidance and small hand-written helpers. Preserve its schedule and release blocker, create no successor, and delete the completed off-cycle quest. Redirect the build-time quest's stale dependency link to the recurring audit.
Impact
Public API: no exported items or signatures removed. Emitted schema types now import the identical definitions from zod/mini; built-package consumer checks resolve them using declared dependencies.
Wire and catalog format: unchanged. AV1 retains the same accepted grammar and malformed-input refusal.
No user-facing feature, codec or transport removal; no package version bumps.
Alternatives
Keep nontrivial thread-ownership, fallible I/O, duration Serde, codec, platform logging and benchmark instrumentation dependencies instead of owning equivalent code. The audit records the costs and consumers. Keep unrelated lock entries rather than rehoist the existing override tree.
Validation
Rust: hang lint/doc and all 150 library tests pass. 19,598 original/replacement parser comparisons agree.
Existing nightly moq-mux --bench catalog now benchmarks short/full/partial AV1 fields; all three run. Paired optimized scratch medians: 113/248/45 ns before, 14/53/22 ns after (five million parses per case). No timing gate.
All JS checks/builds pass. Regenerated API reports then pass without update mode, including isolated built-package declarations for all six published schema consumers. Frozen install passes; no remaining emitted @zod/mini or async-mutex reference.
Separate full just js test passes, including 2,676 net tests. Full gate attempts also observed intermittent, untouched legacy lite-01..04 close-drain failures at connection.test.ts:394; focused cases pass. A pristine origin/main archive with the original dependencies and required epoch fixture passed all 2,676 net tests, so that archive did not reproduce the intermittent failure. Keep the failed gate evidence; a later passing run is not a full-CI pass.
quest check --base origin/main, Markdown, formatting and diff checks pass after fixing the removed quest's backlink.
Full just ci does not pass here: workspace Rust docs and the clippy-gate fixture encounter the known mbx E2BIG; the flake runner-image build cannot create a user namespace. No validation bypass. The gate also captured the legacy JS failures above; its earlier quest-link failure is fixed and rechecked separately.
Root Bun audit reproduces the same two pre-existing glob/minimatch advisory groups on the before/after locks. No clean security-audit claim.
Review
Codex, GPT-6.1 Sol (gpt-6.1-sol), medium effort, via quest review --base origin/main. Round 1 of a new session (main's agent instructions changed, so the old session could not resume) reviewed ae08309204: no findings. Earlier Codex rounds on e9305e79, 98f9ac77 and cd2b0e08 also had no findings. CodeRabbit's two audit-doc findings on d2a6877 were fixed in 98f9ac7; Pullfrog found nothing on any later head.
Iteration changes since b2b881cb, which the merge queue removed with failed_checks. The failing test, moq-tokio::integration backend::quic_client_close_drains_finished_track ("subscribe failed: Unroutable"), also fails on main and is tracked by quest/m0/test-flakes-2/tokio-close-drain.md. It passed in this gate. The changes come from one merge of main through 2738588c:
js/hang/api/index.api.md conflict: kept main's import list, including its new ZodMiniType, on this branch's zod/mini path.
Main's new js/hang/src/report.ts imported @zod/mini. It now imports zod/mini; @moq/hang already declares zod.
bun.lock and Cargo.lock merged cleanly. Versus main they differ only by this branch's removals: 31 deleted bun.lock lines and hang's regex edge in Cargo.lock, with nothing added. bun install --frozen-lockfile passes.
quest gate just ci origin/main on ae08309: every module passes (11,383 Rust tests, including the close-drain test; all JS checks, builds, API reports and tests) except check flake. That one fails on this host's known user-namespace limit (unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map: Operation not permitted while building the github-runner image), which this PR does not touch.
Follow-ups
Existing moq-dev/moq#7590 covers the legacy close-drain flake. moq-dev/moq#7296 has since merged into main. Test deletion/optimization stays with moq-dev/moq#7600; source/generics/generated-code build costs stay with the concurrent build-time audit. The recurring dependency audit retains the known advisory and backend comparisons. No follow-up created or planned here.

Remove the dependencies that don't earn their weight
chore(deps): remove redundant build, schema, and codec helpers
Nov 2, 2026
No actionable bugs found. The direction is sound: remove redundant wrappers and the unused mutex dependency, retain declared Zod dependencies, and reuse the existing numeric parser for AV1's fixed grammar rather than keeping a regex dependency. The replacement preserves field widths/ranges, short-form defaults, and refusal of partial or trailing fields; the added boundary cases and benchmark fit that change. Bun-driven builds make the simpler cleanup command appropriate.
Verification limits: static GitHub source/diff review, including parser callers/helper, package manifests, API-report changes and build/package scripts. I did not run tests, builds, benchmarks or security audits; the PR's reported full-CI limitations remain unverified here.

Reviewed changes
rimraf -> rm -rf dist in 19 JS build scripts, relying on Bun's cross-platform shell. Lock diff is removals only; the glob/minimatch stack other tools need stays.
@zod/mini -> zod/mini across six JS packages, their .api.md reports, and dependencies/peerDependencies. Verified against the published packages: @zod/mini@4.6.7 is export * from "zod/mini" for both JS and types, and zod/mini is the implementation with no reverse dependency, so the swap preserves symbol and type identity.
async-mutex dropped from @moq/net; no source, test, or emitted-type reference remains.
regex dropped from rs/hang; AV1::from_str is now a split/byte-pattern parser over the existing codec_number helper, with a new field_boundaries rejection test.
New bench_av1_codec in rs/moq-mux/benches/catalog.rs (short/full/partial; partial is an intentionally malformed, error-path input).
Quest docs: quest/m1/prune-deps.md deleted, its README bullet removed, the build-time quest's dependency link redirected to /quest/m2/audit-deps.md, and the audit baselines/keep-list rewritten.
I independently confirmed the AV1 rewrite is behaviorally equivalent to the removed regex: same accepted/rejected set and same parsed values, including the byte-length vs char-length check (neutralized by codec_number's ASCII-only digits), multi-byte UTF-8, trailing-dot empty fields, the all-or-nothing optional extra group, and Rust's $ not matching before a trailing newline. No dangling references to any removed dependency or the deleted quest remain. The PR is honest about the known environmental just ci failures (#7594, flake user namespace) and the pre-existing intermittent JS close-drain flake (#7590), neither of which is introduced here.

Walkthrough
JavaScript packages now import Zod Mini from zod/mini, remove selected dependencies, and use rm -rf dist instead of rimraf. Rust replaces regex-based AV1 codec parsing with ordered field validation and adds boundary tests and a Criterion benchmark. Dependency audit documentation and quest records are updated.

No new actionable bugs found. Extending the direct zod/mini import to room metadata keeps the dependency removal complete after the base merge; its runtime zod declaration remains. The simpler direction still holds without adding another abstraction.
Verification: static GitHub review of the incremental changes and room metadata/manifest. No tests, builds or audits run; this does not establish passing CI or a clean security audit.

Reviewed changes
Changes since the prior pullfrog review (d2a6877eb1): the CodeRabbit-driven audit-doc corrections, two conflict-free merges of main, and the cleanup extended to the newly-merged @moq/room package.
Audit doc scope corrected — the recurring audit no longer claims the root lockfile is clean; only the Worker and standalone lockfiles are, with the glob/minimatch advisories noted below.
Lock-edit procedure tightened — a transitive-only bump now also updates the entry's dependencies object, and a new release that adds packages uses a version-scoped root override instead of a hand edit.
@moq/room deps pruned — @zod/mini -> zod/mini in js/room/src/metadata.ts and its manifest, rimraf -> rm -rf dist, with the bun.lock workspace entry hand-edited to match.
zod-consumer count refreshed — the audit's removal bullet now reads six runtime and two peer declarations; verified against the tree (runtime: auth, hang, moq-boy, msf, room, js-native interop; peer: json, net).
I confirmed no @zod/mini, async-mutex, rimraf, or prune-deps reference remains anywhere in the working tree, and that the room conversion is a mechanical import-path swap with zod still declared. No Pullfrog review threads were open to retire.
Keep main's code and dependency versions; carry this branch's @zod/mini to
zod/mini swap into main's new auth wire and hang HLS imports. bun.lock is the
clean three-way merge (only this branch's removals versus main), verified with
a frozen install; Cargo.lock regenerated from main's lock.

Merged current base and resolved the two catalog import conflicts by retaining zod/mini together with base’s InstanceSchema and Path imports. Kept base’s deletion of the retired build-time quest; the PR only updated a link in that file.
Validation passed: cargo test -p hang -p moq-mux --all-targets (150 hang tests, 1,973 moq-mux tests, and benchmark checks); bun run --cwd <directory> build, check, and test for every script defined in the touched JS packages: js/auth, js/clock, js/e2ee, js/hang, js/json, js/loc, js/moq-boy, js/msf, js/net, js/p2p, js/pattern, js/publish, js/qmux, js/room, js/sign, js/signals, js/ui, js/video, and js/watch. Also passed bun run --cwd test/interop/clients/js-native check and bun x --no-install biome check js/hang/src/catalog/contribution.ts js/hang/src/catalog/path.ts.
Dependencies were installed with bun install --frozen-lockfile --ignore-scripts. Rust validation used installed pkg-config, libclang, and system-header paths. Hang tests passed after supplying the installed moq-libav 0.1.0 artifact. No dependency manifests or protected paths were edited for these environment adjustments.

Changes since the prior pullfrog review (e9305e79): a base merge of main (3407e5db) that resolved catalog-import and retired-quest conflicts.
Merged main with conflicts resolved — the branch's @zod/mini -> zod/mini swap is preserved across js/hang/src/catalog/*.ts while adopting base's Epoch -> Instance rename (EpochSchema -> InstanceSchema, ReferenceEpoch -> ReferenceInstance, and Epoch dropped from the @moq/net import in path.ts).
Base's uuid removal adopted — js/net/package.json and bun.lock drop uuid; base removed it and no source reference remains.
Retired-quest edits reconciled — base deleted quest/m1/prune-build-time.md, so the branch's earlier link redirect to it drops out; the branch's own prune-deps.md deletion and its README.md bullet removal remain.
I verified the resolution preserved every branch hunk: no @zod/mini, async-mutex, rimraf, or prune-deps reference remains anywhere; InstanceSchema is consistently imported and used across the hang catalog with no stale EpochSchema/ReferenceEpoch; and rs/hang/src/catalog/video/av1.rs plus rs/hang/Cargo.toml are untouched by the merge (the merge's rs/hang changes are base's rename). No pullfrog review threads were open to retire.

Built and ran cargo test --locked -p moq-tokio --test integration backend::quic_client_close_drains_finished_track -- --exact --nocapture on both heads, using installed pkg-config, libclang, and glibc header paths. Each initial run passed. Repeating the resulting test binary reproduced the exact failure on attempt 3 on the PR and attempt 1 on base. The test itself is unchanged by this PR. These intermittent failures prevent successful validation; changing close/subscription ordering or test synchronization needs review beyond the permitted mechanical fixes.

Changes since the prior pullfrog review (b2b881cb4): a merge of main (through 2738588cf, including the browser publisher/player report feature #7222) with its js/hang conflicts resolved.
Merged main with conflicts resolved — js/hang/api/index.api.md keeps main's full import list, including its new ZodMiniType, on the branch's zod/mini path, and the new js/hang/src/report.ts imports zod/mini instead of @zod/mini (@moq/hang already declares zod).
Branch removals preserved — js/hang/package.json still drops @zod/mini and rimraf, Cargo.lock drops only regex from hang, and bun.lock keeps only removals.
git diff 2738588cf..HEAD equals the PR's intended 71-file removal patch, so the resolution dropped no main content and added nothing beyond the branch's changes. No @zod/mini, rimraf, async-mutex, or prune-deps reference remains outside the audit doc's prose. No pullfrog review threads were open to retire.

Problem
Build and runtime manifests retain helpers with no consumer or with an existing replacement. The off-cycle dependency quest also needs measured costs and a fresh judgment of the recurring audit's keep list.
Approach
rimrafin 19 JS buildsrm -rf dist, supported by Bun's cross-platform shell. 261,819 installed bytes; warm nested-output deletion median 24.33 ms through its Bun CLI versus 2.41 ms throughbun exec rm -rf(30 runs). No exclusive-transitive saving claimed.@zod/minizod/mini. Keep directzoddeclarations in all six runtime and two peer consumers, including@moq/room's metadata schema, which main added on@zod/miniafter this branch started. Removes 5,615 installed bytes, no exclusive transitives.async-mutex@moq/netruntime declaration, with no source, script, test or emitted-type consumer. Removes 63,046 installed bytes; sharedtslibstays.hang'sregexRoot Bun registry names fall from 729 to 726.
Impact
zod/mini; built-package consumer checks resolve them using declared dependencies.Alternatives
Keep nontrivial thread-ownership, fallible I/O, duration Serde, codec, platform logging and benchmark instrumentation dependencies instead of owning equivalent code. The audit records the costs and consumers. Keep unrelated lock entries rather than rehoist the existing override tree.
Validation
moq-mux --bench catalognow benchmarks short/full/partial AV1 fields; all three run. Paired optimized scratch medians: 113/248/45 ns before, 14/53/22 ns after (five million parses per case). No timing gate.@zod/miniorasync-mutexreference.just js testpasses, including 2,676 net tests. Full gate attempts also observed intermittent, untouched legacy lite-01..04 close-drain failures atconnection.test.ts:394; focused cases pass. A pristine origin/main archive with the original dependencies and required epoch fixture passed all 2,676 net tests, so that archive did not reproduce the intermittent failure. Keep the failed gate evidence; a later passing run is not a full-CI pass.quest check --base origin/main, Markdown, formatting and diff checks pass after fixing the removed quest's backlink.just cidoes not pass here: workspace Rust docs and the clippy-gate fixture encounter the known mbx E2BIG; the flake runner-image build cannot create a user namespace. No validation bypass. The gate also captured the legacy JS failures above; its earlier quest-link failure is fixed and rechecked separately.Review
Codex, GPT-6.1 Sol (
gpt-6.1-sol), medium effort, viaquest review --base origin/main. Round 1 of a new session (main's agent instructions changed, so the old session could not resume) reviewed ae08309204: no findings. Earlier Codex rounds on e9305e79, 98f9ac77 and cd2b0e08 also had no findings. CodeRabbit's two audit-doc findings on d2a6877 were fixed in 98f9ac7; Pullfrog found nothing on any later head.Iteration changes since b2b881cb, which the merge queue removed with
failed_checks. The failing test,moq-tokio::integration backend::quic_client_close_drains_finished_track("subscribe failed: Unroutable"), also fails on main and is tracked byquest/m0/test-flakes-2/tokio-close-drain.md. It passed in this gate. The changes come from one merge of main through 2738588c:js/hang/api/index.api.mdconflict: kept main's import list, including its newZodMiniType, on this branch'szod/minipath.js/hang/src/report.tsimported@zod/mini. It now importszod/mini;@moq/hangalready declareszod.bun.lockandCargo.lockmerged cleanly. Versus main they differ only by this branch's removals: 31 deletedbun.locklines and hang'sregexedge inCargo.lock, with nothing added.bun install --frozen-lockfilepasses.quest gate just ci origin/mainon ae08309: every module passes (11,383 Rust tests, including the close-drain test; all JS checks, builds, API reports and tests) exceptcheck flake. That one fails on this host's known user-namespace limit (unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map: Operation not permittedwhile building the github-runner image), which this PR does not touch.Follow-ups
