test(mux): require export EOF after finishing timing fixtures - #7630
The TS timing fixtures finished video and audio but left the catalog open. Export correctly kept waiting for catalog updates; a 10 ms give-up hid that the fixtures never reached EOF. Replacing the give-up with a strict drain reproduced the failure before finishing the catalog.
Approach
Finish the fixtures' catalog and require real export EOF, advancing controlled time only to scheduled output. A parked export with no output deadline now fails immediately.
Cover both finish orders: media drains while catalog stays open, and media published after catalog EOF drains while its tracks stay open. Live-source polls reject premature EOF; catalog EOF must wake a parked exporter.
Check that every AAC frame reaches the output before EOF and none arrives after it. AAC frames share PES packets, so counting video alone would miss a lost audio tail.
Clarify the CLI end condition and the TS exporter reference. export ts --passthrough is the stated exception: it ends with its track while the catalog stays open (rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/release.rs). Complete and remove the quest and its link.
Impact
Public API: no signature or behavior changes. The existing catalog-and-media end condition is documented for the muxed exports (TS, fMP4, MKV, FLV, Annex-B), along with the passthrough exception.
Wire: none.
Alternatives
Changing production EOF to depend only on media tracks would stop an export while its open catalog can still announce new tracks. No production lifecycle change or replacement timeout is needed.
Choices made without asking
Kept catalog-governed termination, as the quest explicitly permits. Added one lifecycle test using the existing controlled clock and live-source fixture.

CodeRabbit r4442377935, the passthrough end condition: fixed. Release::poll_next (release.rs:182-187) ends on track EOF regardless of the catalog, so the CLI sentence now covers the muxed exports and states the passthrough exception. It also fixes a stray line break.
CodeRabbit nitpick, assert the AAC frames: fixed. The test now reassembles AUDIO_PID PES packets, strips ADTS headers, and compares the result with the fixture's frames before and after EOF.
Finish the timing fixtures catalog and require actual export termination on controlled time. Cover catalog and media finishing in either order and document the catalog lifecycle.

moq export ends when the broadcast ends
test(mux): require export EOF after finishing timing fixtures
Nov 2, 2026
No actionable bugs found. Closing the fixture catalog and requiring actual EOF fixes the test’s missing lifecycle signal rather than changing correct production termination or adding another timeout. The two finish orders, continued publication after catalog EOF, premature-EOF assertions, and catalog wakeup check provide focused coverage using the existing controlled clock.
Verification: static GitHub review of the changes and relevant exporter/fixture lifecycle code only; I did not run tests or independently verify the reported CI results.

Reviewed changes
Strict export EOF in timing fixtures — Live::finish now also finishes the catalog, and a new finish_media closes video/audio while the catalog stays open.
drain no longer tolerates a parked export — the 10 ms give-up is removed; a parked export with no scheduled output now panics instead of silently passing.
Live-path guards — advance and poll_now assert the export has not ended while the broadcast is live.
New lifecycle test — end_waits_for_catalog_and_media covers both finish orders, asserts no premature EOF, stable VIDEO_PID counts, zero drops, and that catalog EOF wakes a parked exporter.
Docs/quest — the doc comment and doc/bin/cli.md state that a stdout export ends when its catalog ends and its media has drained; the completed quest and its link are removed.
The change is test-only on the production side (plus one doc comment), the new assertions match Export::poll_next/next_due semantics, and the removed quest has no remaining references.

Walkthrough
The CLI guide documents when stdout exports and export ts --passthrough end. Export documentation describes the end-of-stream condition. Timing tests check that export waits for both media and catalog completion in either finish order, and verify rendered audio and video. The test drain no longer uses a 10 ms fallback. The quest entry and planning document were removed.

end_waits_for_catalog_and_media emits audio in both finish orders, but its assertions count only VIDEO_PID units. The test can therefore pass when audio frames are lost during completion. After leg.drain(&live.clock), reconstruct the AUDIO_PID PES payload, remove the ADTS headers, and compare the recovered 180-byte AAC payloads with the fixture’s expected frames. This also detects loss when multiple AAC frames share one PES.

lines 469 - 520:
Extend end_waits_for_catalog_and_media to verify audio survives completion:
after leg.drain, reconstruct the AUDIO_PID PES payload, strip ADTS headers, and
compare the recovered 180-byte AAC frames against the fixture’s expected frames.
Ensure the check handles multiple AAC frames within one PES, while preserving
the existing video-count assertions.
Scope the CLI end condition to the muxed exports: `export ts --passthrough`
ends with its track while the catalog stays open (release.rs). The lifecycle
test now also requires every AAC frame out before and only before EOF.

CodeRabbit nitpick from its review on cfdde97, "Assert the expected AAC frames after drain": fixed in e581b0c. end_waits_for_catalog_and_media now reassembles the AUDIO_PID PES payloads, strips the ADTS headers, and compares the frames with the fixture's 180-byte AAC payloads for every frame sent. It checks both before EOF (the media drained while the other side stays open) and after it (nothing more arrives). Since one PES holds several frames, the check also catches a lost frame inside a shared PES.
No new actionable bugs found in the update since cfdde97, accounting for the merged base changes. The AAC payload assertions now check actual frames across PES boundaries in both finish orders, closing the meaningful coverage gap without production changes. The small test-only decoder is proportionate to that check.
CodeRabbit’s passthrough finding and AAC coverage suggestion are addressed: the documented exception matches Release::poll_next, and audio is compared before and after the final drain. My earlier review had no findings.
Verification: static GitHub review of the changed test/documentation and relevant ADTS and passthrough code; tests were not run and reported CI results were not independently verified.

Reviewed changes
Changes since pullfrog's prior review at cfdde97:
Audio coverage in the lifecycle test — end_waits_for_catalog_and_media now asserts the recovered AAC equals the fixture's frames before and after EOF, closing the gap where only VIDEO_PID units were counted.
audio_payload / aac_frames helpers — the fixture payload is extracted into audio_payload(index), and aac_frames(leg) reassembles AUDIO_PID PES packets, strips ADTS headers, and returns one Bytes per frame, matching the existing reassembly in export_test.rs.
Passthrough end condition documented — doc/bin/cli.md now states a stdout export ends when its catalog ends and its media drains, with the export ts --passthrough exception (ends with its track while the catalog stays open), consistent with Release::poll_next in release.rs:182-187.
Exporter doc comment — export.rs records that finishing only the media tracks keeps the export waiting for catalog updates.
Quest cleanup — the completed export-broadcast-end quest and its link are removed.
