Summary

netlify init now sets up the Netlify MCP server for the AI coding agents it finds: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, Kiro CLI, Windsurf and Cline. At project scope, the default, it writes the entry into each agent's own project config file after checking for an existing Netlify server. Claude is the exception: it has a per-project command, so init runs claude mcp add --scope local and nothing lands in the repo. --mcp-scope user widens setup to all projects, where Claude and Codex run their own CLIs and every other agent gets a printed npx -y add-mcp@2.4.1 command.

Agent Project scope (default) --mcp-scope user
Claude Code runs claude mcp add --scope local runs claude mcp add --scope user
Codex appends [mcp_servers.netlify] to .codex/config.toml runs codex mcp add
GitHub Copilot CLI writes .mcp.json (mcpServers, type: http) prints add-mcp -g
Cursor writes .cursor/mcp.json (mcpServers) prints add-mcp -g
VS Code writes .vscode/mcp.json (servers, type: http) prints code --add-mcp
Gemini CLI writes .gemini/settings.json (mcpServers, type: http) prints gemini mcp add --scope user
Kiro CLI writes .kiro/settings/mcp.json (mcpServers) prints add-mcp -g
OpenCode writes opencode.jsonc (mcp, type: remote) prints add-mcp -g
Windsurf, Cline not offered: no per-project config prints add-mcp -g

Gemini's entry is url with type: "http", the shape its own gemini mcp add --transport http writes; Gemini's older httpUrl key is marked deprecated in its source. When init can't edit the file, or at user scope, it prints that gemini mcp add command rather than add-mcp, so the file and the command agree. Codex reads .codex/config.toml only once the project is trusted, and init says so after writing it. Copilot CLI's .mcp.json is also read by Claude Code, which shows the entry as a project server pending approval; that's harmless, and the existing-server check ignores pending servers.

How a config file is written. init changes nothing in a file but the netlify entry it adds. JSON (and JSONC) is parsed with jsonc-parser, which gives the position of the server map, and the new property is spliced in after the last existing one, so comments, trailing commas, one-line arrays and every other byte stay as they were. The result is re-parsed before writing. A missing file is created. Where an agent accepts more than one file name, every one the project has is read for the existing-server check (OpenCode: opencode.json or the .opencode/ variants; Copilot: .github/mcp.json), the entry goes to the first, and the default is created only when none exists. .codex/config.toml is never rewritten: the table is appended and the result re-parsed first, so an inline mcp_servers table is refused. A file is also refused when it isn't valid JSON, when a .mcp.json is in Copilot's bare format (servers at the top level), when the server key isn't an object, or when the path resolves through a symlink to somewhere outside the project. A refusal prints the agent's command with the reason, saves nothing, and leaves the agent to be offered again next run. Existing entries under the file's server key go through the same rules as the Claude check: our URL means "already there", any other Netlify server means "kept"; an entry that's turned off (enabled: false) is reported as such and left off. Files are written atomically (temp file and rename), so a crash mid-write can't leave a truncated config.

When a person runs init in a terminal, they get a checkbox of agents that support the chosen scope. Agents found from the editor terminal or project folders are preticked; other installed agent CLIs are listed unticked.

  • A tick writes the agent's project file (or runs Claude's command) and says which file it wrote and that it should be committed only if everyone on the project should get it. When the file can't be edited, the agent's own command is printed instead (gemini mcp add for Gemini, add-mcp for the rest) and nothing is saved, so the agent is offered again next run.
  • Windsurf and Cline have no per-project config, so they're left out at project scope and only offered with --mcp-scope user. -g is never printed at project scope.
  • With --mcp-scope user, Claude and Codex run their own CLIs after the existing-server check. VS Code can't be checked first, so its command is printed with a note that running it replaces an existing netlify entry. The other agents, OpenCode included, get the add-mcp command with -g.
  • Answers are saved in .netlify/state.json under agentMcpSetup.<scope>.<agent>, as accepted, declined or kept (an existing server left alone). A rerun only asks about new agents, and each scope keeps its own answer. --reset-mcp-setup asks again.

When an agent runs init, an agent init knows (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and the others in MCP_AGENTS) gets no prompt. That agent's project file is written (or, for Claude, its command run) after the existing-server check; if the check fails, nothing is installed. A saved "no" for that scope is honored, and nothing goes user-wide without --mcp-scope user. With --reset-mcp-setup, the saved "no" is skipped for that run and replaced once the server is added or already there. That's the only time an agent run writes .netlify/state.json; a failed add or a printed command leaves it untouched. An agent init doesn't know gets the checkbox when a terminal is attached; without one, it gets the generic add-mcp command with how to run it without its questions (-y -a <agent>, list-agents).

Existing servers are left alone. Claude is checked with claude mcp list (every scope and plugin servers; servers still pending .mcp.json approval don't count), Codex with codex mcp list --json. With --mcp-scope user, a Claude entry only counts if claude mcp get reports it at user scope, and Codex is checked from the home folder so project config isn't read. The hosted URL is matched exactly. Any netlify or plugin:*:netlify server, a Netlify MCP host, or @netlify/mcp counts as an existing Netlify server, under any name, and is reported instead of duplicated.

Skills and MCP are skipped when init runs from the file system root. From the home directory, skills are skipped, and MCP is too unless --mcp-scope user is passed. Agent CLIs are found only through absolute PATH entries, using isexe.

Tests

  • npm exec vitest -- run tests/unit/utils/init/: 150 passed, including the config writes against real files: a Cursor file keeps its other servers, 4-space formatting, a one-line array and CRLF line endings; a commented opencode.jsonc keeps its comments; an existing or other Netlify entry is left alone (also in .github/mcp.json, and when it's turned off); an existing opencode.json gets the entry and no opencode.jsonc appears, and both OpenCode files are read when present; a bare .mcp.json, a non-object mcpServers, a .cursor symlink outside the project and an inline Codex table are refused; the Gemini fallback prints gemini mcp add; and saving and resetting against a real .netlify/state.json
  • npm exec vitest -- run tests/integration/commands/init/init.test.ts: 21 passed, using a fake claude on PATH, including init from the home directory (with and without --mcp-scope user), a saved "no" held until --reset-mcp-setup, and a Gemini agent run that writes .gemini/settings.json once and reports it present on the rerun
  • typecheck, lint, format:check and docs regeneration are clean
  • Reviews: fresh full-PR reviews found nothing blocking. The config-file writes got a fresh review and a second pass briefed to refute it before pushing.

Risk

  • claude mcp list health-checks every approved server and can take up to 30s.
  • An agent init knows skips the prompt even with a terminal attached, which Copilot and Cursor need since they run commands in the editor's terminal. A person whose shell sets NETLIFY_AGENT or CLAUDE_CODE_CHILD_SESSION=1 gets Claude configured for the project without being asked.
  • Saved choices go in the nearest .netlify/state.json, which can be an ancestor folder's in a monorepo.
  • Windows runs the unit tests, including the relative-PATH ones and the config writes; the integration tests that need the shell-script fake claude skip there, and the Gemini config-write test runs.
  • jsonc-parser 3.3.1 is a new runtime dependency (MIT, no dependencies of its own; the parser VS Code uses). It only locates nodes here; the text splice is ours, so the failed fallback covers anything it can't place.
  • The file paths and entry shapes come from each agent's docs and add-mcp 2.4.1. An agent that changes its format later gets a file it doesn't read; the printed fallback and --reset-mcp-setup are the way out until the table is updated.
  • At user scope, only the first Netlify entry's scope is checked. With our server set for this project only and another Netlify server user-wide under a different name, a second user-wide Netlify entry gets added. That's rare, so it's left unhandled.

Related: #8646 (rerunning init on a project linked without git created a duplicate site) is merged into this branch.

Rollback: revert this PR. Anyone who already has the entry can remove it with claude mcp remove --scope local netlify (--scope user if they used --mcp-scope user), or delete the netlify entry from the agent's project file named in the table.

init now runs `claude mcp add --scope local` for the hosted server, so
nothing lands in the repo. Agent setup also skips the home directory and
folders with no project marker, which stops skills leaking into ~/.claude.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added MCP server setup options to init, including project or user scope, the ability to skip MCP setup independently, and an option to reset saved setup choices.
    • init can configure MCP support for detected AI coding agents and recognize existing server configurations.
    • Project-scoped setup is skipped in home-directory and filesystem-root locations; user-scoped MCP setup remains available.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the init command documentation with the new options and clarified what --skip-agent-setup skips.

The init command adds options to configure the Netlify MCP server for supported AI agents, select project or user scope, skip MCP setup, and reset saved setup choices. The change adds agent discovery, server lookup, selection, and choice persistence. Setup checks the project location before installing skills or configuring MCP. Documentation and tests cover the options and setup behavior.

Pick the agent running init, or ask a person with a checkbox preticked
from their editor terminal and project folders. Claude, Codex, OpenCode
and VS Code get the server at user scope through their own CLIs; other
agents get a pinned add-mcp command. Regenerate init docs.
@domitriusclark domitriusclark changed the title feat(init): add Netlify MCP server for Claude Code feat(init): add Netlify MCP server to detected AI agents Oct 20, 2026
Save each prompted yes or no in the global config, keyed by agent and
server URL, so reruns only ask about new agents. --reset-mcp-setup asks
again. Agent-driven runs are unchanged.
The project-marker check skipped skills in an empty folder, the usual
start for an agent building a new site. Block only the home directory
and the file system root, and apply that guard to skills, not MCP.

[blocking] An agent-driven run adds the server at user scope with no prompt, and ignores a saved "declined".

Say someone unticks Claude Code in the checkbox, then later Claude Code runs netlify init for them. It gets added anyway. --reset-mcp-setup doesn't reach this branch either. And the header in agent-detection.ts says its result is "never for authorization" — this is the thing deciding whether to write to someone's user config.

[blocking] On Windows this can run a claude.cmd (or codex.cmd, code.cmd) from the project folder instead of the one on PATH.

execa goes through cross-spawn, which resolves the command from cwd, and the Windows lookup checks the current directory before PATH. So a repo with a claude.cmd at the root runs it when someone runs netlify init in their clone, without a prompt if an agent is driving.

[blocking] Does opencode mcp add take a name and --url? The OpenCode CLI docs show it as an interactive wizard with no flags, and the tests mock execa, so nothing here runs the real thing.

Agent-driven runs now look up and print the add command instead of
writing user config, and honor a saved no and --reset-mcp-setup. Agent
binaries resolve from absolute PATH entries only, so a project-local
claude.cmd never runs. A server on another URL is reported, not counted
as present.
A ticked agent whose netlify server was left unchanged is no longer
saved as accepted. Clarify the message for non-hosted entries, note
when VS Code or OpenCode may have replaced one, and drop a dead branch.

Default to project scope: Claude via claude mcp add --scope local, other
agents via a printed add-mcp project command. --mcp-scope user keeps the
user-wide path. Check every scope and plugin for an existing Netlify

and match the hosted URL exactly.

Agent runs now install at the chosen scope (project by default) after
the same existing-server check as a ticked agent. A saved no and
--reset-mcp-setup still apply, and nothing goes user-wide without
--mcp-scope user.
Agents with no lookup get a printed command instead of a silent
replace; project scope never prints -g and reports Windsurf and Cline
as unsupported; Codex is checked with mcp list --json across all names;
--reset-mcp-setup only deletes an existing saved choice. Tests cover
the real .netlify/state.json.
--reset-mcp-setup in an agent run now bypasses a saved no in memory
instead of deleting it, so agent runs never write .netlify/state.json.

Check scope before treating a Claude entry as user-wide, skip pending .mcp.json servers, let reset replace or forget saved choices, allow --mcp-scope user from home, and tighten URL matching and printed names.
Follow-up from review: a user-wide server under another name now counts, failure output is printed without control characters, and the skip hint names what was skipped.
Check only the matched entry's scope at user scope, print agent errors as-is, and drop two tests that repeat the in-memory reset checks.

Left notes inline. The description's out of date in a few spots too: agent runs do write state.json on a reset, the home directory with --mcp-scope user doesn't skip MCP, and the relative-PATH tests don't skip on Windows anymore.

[consider] Only the first Netlify entry gets its scope checked. A project-local netlify plus a user-wide Netlify server under another name comes back none, and a second user-wide entry gets added. cdde3f9 handled this and 49efae0 took it back out, along with its test.

Leaving this out on purpose. It needs our server set for this project only plus another Netlify server user-wide under a different name, which is rare, and the fix cost an extra claude mcp get per entry. It's listed under Risk in the description. If you've seen it happen, I'll put it back.

Check Codex from the home folder at user scope so project config doesn't count, keep a saved no unless the server is installed, filter agent error output, and check the add's working folder.

Check the filesystem root before the home directory.

When the home directory is /, findProjectSetupBlocker returns place: 'home'. setUpAgents then skips the root block, so --mcp-scope user sets up MCP from /. Move the root check above the home check. The reason text also shows the home message at /, so the root check fixes that too.

Forget saved choices for agents that are not detected on an interactive reset.

--reset-mcp-setup must forget the saved choices for the active scope. The interactive reset path only handles detected candidates. A saved accepted, declined, or kept entry for an agent that is not detected stays in .netlify/state.json. When that agent is installed later, the entry hides it from the prompt on a later run.

Clear the entries for agents that are not candidates. This includes the case where no agent is detected. Keep the agent-driven path unchanged. A failed add on that path must not write or delete state.

Workaround: run the reset again while the agent is detected.

At project scope, init now adds the Netlify MCP server to the agent's
own config file instead of printing an add-mcp command, which agents
and people often skipped. A file is only edited when it can be
reproduced byte for byte; Codex's TOML is appended and re-parsed.
Anything else falls back to the printed command with the reason.

[consider] Have you seen Codex pick up an entry written here? Last time you couldn't get a project entry to show up on codex-cli 0.158.0, even in a trusted folder, and init reports this one as added.

I haven't seen it load one. Codex's config reference says project .codex/config.toml is read only for a trusted project, and codex mcp list didn't show project entries on 0.158.0, so I can't confirm it from the list command. 96e187a adds "Codex reads it once this project is trusted" after the added line.

[consider] The description says keeping comments would need a JSONC editor as a dependency, but comment-json is already one. src/recipes/vscode/settings.ts uses it to edit VS Code settings without dropping comments.

Went with jsonc-parser instead (new dependency, 3.3.1). comment-json keeps comments but re-serializes the file, so the one-line arrays from your other comment would still get expanded. jsonc-parser gives the node offsets, and the insertion leaves everything else byte-identical. Happy to switch if you'd rather not add it.

The JSON edit now splices in only the netlify property, located with
jsonc-parser, so comments, one-line arrays and the rest of the file
stay byte for byte. Refusals no longer save a choice. Symlinks that
leave the project are refused, every existing OpenCode file is read,
a disabled entry is reported as such, and Gemini gets its own
mcp add command and the entry shape that command writes.

The file read already checks for an existing server, and an older
Codex without mcp list --json blocked the write. The symlink test
uses a junction so Windows needs no symlink privilege.
