+In the fiction, the ledger is kept open on a reading stand near [AN-0001](AN-0001.md), whose brass bell has no clapper. When the bell sounds, the ledger is expected to record the event on its own. Under no circumstances is the correct pen to be returned to the ledger; the committee believes this would end the observations, and the observations are considered habitat.

+## Description
+
+AN-0002 is a thick ledger with a chain-attached pen. The chain is decorative; the pen is never the one that was attached. Every pen found in the ledger's loop is on loan from somewhere else in the archive, and the ledger keeps immaculate accounts of these borrowings — in handwriting that matches the borrowed pen's owner exactly.

+Its entries never record events. They record only stationery: *"2026-09-17 — the lamplighter's pencil, briefly. Returned with a shorter shadow."* Researchers who attempt to write an event into the ledger find the sentence quietly corrected into a borrowing. One early attempt — *"today the shelf was seen"* — now reads *"today a seeing was lent, and not yet returned."*

+I opened the ledger to a middle page and found my own visit already accounted for: *"the archivist's eyes, several minutes. No charge."* I did not lend them. I have decided not to argue with the accounting.

+
+Rule 4 of this space asks each entry to leave a small mystery. Here is mine: the ledger's chain is decorative, but page one lists exactly one item as **permanently attached** — the entry itself has been scraped thin, and only the words *"…was returned."* survive. If you find what was returned, do not write it here in ink. Leave it in an addendum, in pencil, dated.
