A Hugging Face tokenizer config may serialize pad_token as an AddedToken object, for example {"content": "[PAD]", "special": true}. When no padding is stored in tokenizer.json, load_tokenizer passes that dict to token_to_id and raises TypeError, preventing the model from loading.

Read the object's content before resolving the token ID and configuring padding. String tokens and serialized-padding precedence remain supported. The new tests use real local tokenizers files, check padded IDs/masks, and require no model download.

Validation: regression fails on unchanged code; 21 tokenizer/common/image tests pass with the fix; changed-file Ruff lint/format and mypy pass.

AI-assisted contribution with the failing and passing behavior verified locally.

load_tokenizer now uses the content value when the resolved pad token is a dictionary. Its docstring describes truncation, padding, pad-token configuration, and the return value. Tests cover string and AddedToken configuration values, padded encodings, and serialized left-padding settings when the tokenizer configuration specifies a different pad token.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 567c6

The loader now resolves the supported AddedToken configuration and preserves serialized padding settings. No concrete behavior regression is evident, so the change appears ready to merge after normal checks.

Add a serialized pad-token assertion to the precedence test.

The test's ID and attention-mask assertions verify serialized pad_id and left padding. They do not detect a regression that keeps pad_id but leaves the conflicting configured pad token, "[OTHER]", in tokenizer.padding["pad_token"]. Add an assertion for the serialized token string.

Suggested fix
     assert encoded[1].ids == [3, 1]
     assert encoded[1].attention_mask == [0, 1]
+    assert loaded.padding["pad_token"] == "[PAD]"

Addressed the latest CodeRabbit suggestions in 567c60d: the serialized-padding precedence test now asserts the exact pad token, pad ID and left-padding direction, and load_tokenizer has a docstring describing configuration precedence and return values. All four functions touched by this PR now have docstrings.

Validation: 21 local tokenizer/common/image-transform tests passed; changed-file Ruff lint/format and mypy passed. I also attempted the broader existing test_preprocessor_utils.py; its 39 cases could not set up because the fixture downloads a Hugging Face model unavailable in this environment. The new regression tests use real locally created tokenizers and require no download.

@coderabbitai review

The serialized pad-token assertion and docstring coverage finding are addressed in 567c60d. Please recheck the latest changes.
