From prod telemetry of free-tier Gemini/ChatGPT sessions (2026-10-27):
Several exact edits to one file now apply in order. This was the real cause of ChatGPT's two failed commits (2 and 9 edits to pages/index.tsx): commit/stage refused any second edit to a path ("edited more than once in one commit"), so it fell back to whole-file rewrites. Each edit applies to the text the earlier ones left; per-file expect_blob values must agree. The test pinning the old refusal was deleted.
Edit mismatches: every failing edit is reported at once, with its index, path, match count and the closest line-numbered window, plus a whitespace-only hint pointing at line_edits.
show_commit: ChatGPT pulled the template root commit 6× at 140 KB. It now returns a per-file stat list (never cut) and a patch budgeted at ~20 KB with truncated. Root or cut commits point to open_app / read_files. Optional path/paths filter. The patch is sent in the text block only; it was duplicated in structuredContent.
-32602 invalid params (Gemini's read_files failed twice, then gave up): errors name the tool, field and expected shape and carry data: {tool, shape}. The rejected argument shape (types + keys, never values) is logged at info. read_files also accepts files: ["a.ts"], paths: [...], a single path, and file; search_code takes a string paths. The canonical schema is unchanged.
Live on prod (outer:3349d95, throwaway account deleted after):
show_commit of a fresh app's root commit: 25 KB (was 140 KB).
Two edits to pages/_nav.ts in one commit: success.
A mismatched pair: both reported, with the whitespace-only hint and line numbers.
read_files with string files / single path: OK.
files: 42 → read_files: \files` must be an array of {path, start_line?, end_line?}; got a numberwithdata.shape`.
fmt, clippy, cargo test (1070 + 7) green. No migration.
…reports
- show_commit caps the patch at 20 KB behind an uncut per-file stat
list (+/- counts, status), flags root commits, and takes an optional
path/paths filter. Points at open_app / read_files when cut.
- Invalid params name the tool, field and expected shape (-32602 with
data {tool, shape}); the rejected arg shape (types/keys only) logs at
info. Applied centrally in the MCP dispatcher.
- read_files accepts string entries, paths alias, single path/file;
search_code accepts a string paths/glob alias. Schemas stay canonical.
- Exact-edit failures report every bad edit (index, path, match count)
with the closest file window for zero matches, whitespace-only
detection included; shared by commit and stage.
- Regen web/docs/reference/tools.md.

Walkthrough
The pull request updates exact-edit failure reporting, commit display results, and MCP tool input handling. It adds aggregate edit diagnostics, path-filtered commit patches with complete file statistics, and more flexible tool arguments with structured invalid-parameter details.
Exact-edit validation collects failures before applying replacements. Errors include each edit’s index, path, and match count, with closest-region details for zero matches. MCP errors and tests use the aggregate format.

Truncated window gives a wrong line_edits range in the hint.
closest_region caps the shown text at MAX_CLOSEST_LINES, then sets end_line to shown. The Display impl uses end_line in the suggestion use line_edits lines {start}-{end}. If old spans more than 15 lines, the suggested range covers only the first 15 lines of the matched window.
An agent that follows the hint replaces only part of the intended block. The remaining lines of the block stay in the file. The whitespace-only branch is the most likely to cause this, because the agent trusts it as an exact fix.
Keep the full window bounds for the hint. Use the capped bound only for the displayed text. For example, set end_line to end and append a truncation marker to text when shown < end. Alternatively, add a separate window_end_line field and use it in the hint. Update the ClosestRegion::end_line doc comment to match, because it currently says "Last line shown". Add a test with a window wider than 15 lines.

The negative assertion cannot fail. Check a path that exists in this fixture.
seed() in this module commits only pages/index.tsx and pages/about.ts. No lib/moderate.ts exists here, so !one.patch.contains("lib/moderate.ts") is always true. The assertion would still pass if the path filter did nothing. Assert on pages/about.ts instead. That file is in the commit and not in the filter.

Count and display the path that read_files uses.
When files is a string, the parser reads one file, but this summary records 0 file(s). When a caller uses paths, path, or file, the summary counts the files but omits their paths. Normalize the selected input form before building the persisted action summary. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Bound object keys in rejected argument shapes.
When an unauthenticated caller omits the required docs.topic, the call returns -32602. The caller can also supply an arbitrary object key. shape_of copies that key without a length or count limit, and handle_call writes the resulting shape to an info-level log and the response. The 32 MiB request cap still permits a very large log event on each rejected call. Cap object-key count and length before logging the shape. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

parse_string_list hardcodes read_files: in its error text. search_code also uses this helper.
SearchCodeInput::deserialize calls parse_string_list for paths and glob (Lines 177 and 182). A bad search_codepaths or glob value therefore produces an error that names read_files. The error is meant to name the tool, so a weak client gets misleading guidance.
The new search_code_paths_string test does not catch this. It asserts only message.contains("search_code"). That check passes only because the RPC layer adds the tool name as a prefix.
Pass the tool name into the helper:
Proposed fix
-fn parse_string_list(value: &Value, field: &str) -> Result<Vec<String>, String> {+fn parse_string_list(value: &Value, tool: &str, field: &str) -> Result<Vec<String>, String> {

@@
- "read_files: {field} must be an array of strings; got {}",+ "{tool}: {field} must be an array of strings; got {}",
Then update the three callers. ReadFilesInput passes "read_files". SearchCodeInput passes "search_code" for both paths and glob. Also assert that the search_code error message does not contain read_files.
