Fixes item 1 from the alpha.17 UAT. sedum explore read TYPESAFE_API_KEY directly and ignored provider.apiKeyEnv. A project that keeps its key in a custom variable got "Set TYPESAFE_API_KEY to use the TypeSafe provider" and exit 3, while run and doctor in the same project worked.

  • exploreProvider loads the project config. When the provider is TypeSafe, it reads the key from provider.apiKeyEnv, falling back to TYPESAFE_API_KEY when that isn't set. The shell wins over .env, as before. Named environments don't apply because explore has no --env.
  • The key is always passed to TypeSafeAdapter, even when empty. Otherwise the adapter falls back to process.env.TYPESAFE_API_KEY, which a configured name is meant to replace.
  • The missing-key message and fix name the configured variable.
  • Behavior change: an invalid sedum.config.yaml now stops explore with its diagnostic (exit 3), as it does run. Before, explore didn't read the config at all.

Checked

  • vitest run packages/cli: 340 passed; build, typecheck and lint pass.
  • New test: the key is read from provider.apiKeyEnv and doesn't fall back to TYPESAFE_API_KEY when the custom variable is empty.
  • End to end against a local app, with provider.apiKeyEnv: TYPESAFE_LOCAL_E2E_API_KEY and the key only in .env:
    • alpha.17: Set TYPESAFE_API_KEY…, exit 3.
    • This branch: guided walk runs (Jev: 3 calls), exit 0.
  • This branch, other cases:
    • Custom variable empty and TYPESAFE_API_KEY set in the shell: Set TYPESAFE_LOCAL_E2E_API_KEY…, exit 3.
    • No apiKeyEnv: TYPESAFE_API_KEY from .env works, exit 0.
    • No config file at all: works, exit 0.
    • apiKeyEnv: 9-BAD: config diagnostic, exit 3.
    • --mode random with an unset custom key: runs, exit 0.

Merge after alpha.17 is published. A new commit on main replaces the alpha.17 candidate under UAT. Until #153 is merged, the replacement candidate would also ship this pending changeset under the alpha.17 changelog.

explore read TYPESAFE_API_KEY directly, so a project that keeps its key in
a custom variable failed with "Set TYPESAFE_API_KEY" while run and doctor
worked. exploreProvider now loads the project config and reads the key from
provider.apiKeyEnv when the provider is TypeSafe. It always passes the key
to the adapter, even when empty, so the adapter cannot fall back to
TYPESAFE_API_KEY. The missing-key message names the configured variable.

🟠 config.apiKeyEnv selects a named environment key · src/explore-command.ts:245

Correctness · src/explore-command.ts:245 · in Explore Command & Fuzzer

exploreProvider uses config.apiKeyEnv, which loadProjectConfig resolves from environment: staging; those projects read the staging key name despite the documented top-level-only behavior.

Fix: Read the top-level provider.apiKeyEnv for sedum explore, or add a loadProjectConfig option that skips named-environment overrides.

🟠 loadProjectConfig(cwd, environment) applies named environments in explore · src/explore-command.ts:239

Correctness · src/explore-command.ts:239 · in Explore Command & Fuzzer

exploreProvider passes cwd to loadProjectConfig, which applies raw.environment; when it names staging, explore uses environments.staging.provider.apiKeyEnv despite the documented top-level setting.

Fix: Resolve explore’s key name from the top-level provider.apiKeyEnv and ignore raw.environment and environments.* in exploreProvider.

🟠 loadProjectConfig applies raw.environment despite the new docs · docs/explore-mode.md:300

Correctness · docs/explore-mode.md:300

The new docs say named environments are not applied, but exploreProvider calls loadProjectConfig(cwd, environment), which selects raw.environment; a project configured for staging reads the staging key instead of its top-level key.

Fix: Update the explore docs to say that sedum explore honors environment: from the config and has no --env override.

CodeScene flagged explore at cyclomatic complexity 9. Loading the project
credentials and wording the missing-key message are now their own helpers.

PR-lens pointed out that the docs said explore ignores named environments,
but loadProjectConfig applies the config's default `environment:`. That
matches sedum run without --env, so keep the behavior, document it, and
pin it with a test.
