# LangChain MCP Integration

ProofLayer wraps LangChain-compatible MCP tools before they are made available to
LangChain or LangGraph agents. The integration scans tool descriptions, tool
arguments, and tool outputs with the same deterministic rules engine used by the
MCP gateway and LangGraph integration.

## Install

```bash
pip install "prooflayer-rules[langchain-mcp]"
```

The optional extra installs `langchain-mcp-adapters>=0.3.1` and
`langchain-core>=0.3.0`.

## Usage

```python
from langchain_mcp_adapters.client import MultiServerMCPClient
from prooflayer.integrations.langchain_mcp import SecurityConfig, SecurityMiddleware
client = MultiServerMCPClient({...})
tools = await client.get_tools()
middleware = SecurityMiddleware(
config=SecurityConfig(
tool_poisoning="block",
exfil="block",
tool_abuse="block",
emit_to=["stdout", "logfile:./audit.jsonl"],
)
)
safe_tools = middleware.wrap_tools(tools)
```

Use `safe_tools` anywhere the original LangChain tools would be passed. The
wrapper preserves common LangChain tool methods including `invoke`, `ainvoke`,
`run`, `arun`, and direct calls.

## Security Checks

- Tool descriptions are scanned for tool poisoning before agent exposure.
- Tool arguments are scanned before MCP server execution.
- Tool outputs are scanned before returning to the agent.
- Explicit `allowed_tools` and `blocked_tools` policy is enforced before calls.
- Audit events include `integration="langchain_mcp"`, rule IDs, timestamps, and
sha256 chain-of-custody fields.

## Local Example

```bash
python3 examples/integrations/langchain_mcp/basic_tool_security.py
```

# LlamaIndex Integration

ProofLayer wraps LlamaIndex-compatible tools and can scan retrieved context
chunks before they are added to an agent or RAG prompt. The integration is
dependency-light at import time and only requires LlamaIndex when customers use
real LlamaIndex objects.

## Install

```bash
pip install "prooflayer-rules[llamaindex]"
```

The optional extra installs `llama-index>=0.14.23`.

## Usage

```python
from prooflayer.integrations.llamaindex import ProofLayerToolWrapper, SecurityConfig
wrapper = ProofLayerToolWrapper(
config=SecurityConfig(
prompt_injection="block",
tool_poisoning="block",
exfil="block",
emit_to=["stdout", "logfile:./audit.jsonl"],
)
)
safe_tools = wrapper.wrap_tools(mcp_tools)
safe_context = wrapper.scan_context_chunks(retrieved_nodes)
```

Use `safe_tools` anywhere the original LlamaIndex tools would be passed. The
wrapper preserves common LlamaIndex tool methods including `call`, `acall`, and
direct calls.

## Security Checks

- Tool descriptions are scanned for tool poisoning before agent exposure.
- Tool arguments are scanned before tool execution.
- Tool outputs are scanned before returning to the agent.
- Retrieved context chunks are scanned for prompt injection and exfiltration.
- Context audit events include source metadata when the chunk exposes it.

## Local Example

```bash
python3 examples/integrations/llamaindex/basic_tool_security.py
```

Phase 2 should add `prooflayer.integrations.langchain_mcp` and
`prooflayer.integrations.llamaindex` using these shared primitives. It should
not add package extras until exact supported dependency versions are confirmed.

## Phase 2 Status

Phase 2 adds the first two shared-primitive integrations:

| Integration | Public API | Protected surfaces |
|---|---|---|
| LangChain MCP | `SecurityMiddleware.wrap_tools(tools)` | tool descriptions, arguments, outputs |
| LlamaIndex | `ProofLayerToolWrapper.wrap_tools(tools)` | tool descriptions, arguments, outputs, retrieved context |

The optional extras are:

```bash
pip install "prooflayer-rules[langchain-mcp]"
pip install "prooflayer-rules[llamaindex]"
```

Both integrations keep optional framework imports out of the base import path.

# LangChain MCP Integration Example

This example shows how to wrap LangChain-compatible MCP tools before they are
passed to a LangChain or LangGraph agent.

Run:

```bash
python3 examples/integrations/langchain_mcp/basic_tool_security.py
```

The example uses a local fake tool with the same `name`, `description`, and
`invoke()` surface used by LangChain tools. It demonstrates:

- clean calls passing through
- exfiltrating arguments blocked before tool execution
- poisoned tool descriptions blocked before agent exposure
