## What this means in practice

- You keep your copyright. The CLA grants the Project a license, not ownership.
- Your code will be available under the MIT license in the public repo.
- Your code will be available under the [Stroke License](../../LICENSE) in the
public repo.
- The Project may also include your code in a commercial Pro build under a
separate proprietary license. This is necessary to sustain the project.
- You will be credited in the project's contributor list.

Stroke Sustainable Use License
Version 1.0

Copyright (c) 2026 Nischal Dahal and Stroke contributors

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plain-English summary (not legally binding — the terms below govern):

- You CAN use Stroke for free — personally, in your company, in schools,
anywhere — and you can read, modify, and build the entire source code,
including the Pro features.
- You CANNOT sell Stroke, charge money for it, rebrand it as your own
product, or offer it to others as a paid product or hosted service.
- Pro features are key-gated in official builds. The source is public so you
can audit and contribute to it, but removing or bypassing the license-key
checks in builds you distribute is not permitted.
- Official builds and updates come from this repository and stroke.click.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Terms

1. Grant. Subject to the conditions below, you are granted a worldwide,
royalty-free, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use, copy, modify,
and create derivative works of this software, and to distribute copies of
it, in source or compiled form, for any Permitted Purpose.

2. Permitted Purposes. A Permitted Purpose is any use EXCEPT:

a. selling the software, charging any fee for it, or including it in a
product or bundle that is sold or licensed for a fee;

b. providing the software to third parties as a hosted, managed, or
embedded service, whether paid or as part of a paid offering;

c. distributing the software, modified or unmodified, under a different
name or brand, or in a way that suggests it is your own product;

d. removing, disabling, modifying, or circumventing the license-key
functionality that gates Pro features, in any copy you distribute or
provide to others. (You may study and modify that code — including for
local development, testing, and contribution — but builds you give to
anyone else must leave the key gating intact.)

3. Conditions. Any copy or substantial portion you distribute must retain this
license text, the copyright notice above, and a link to the official
repository. Modified copies must be clearly marked as modified.

4. Pro features and updates. Activation of Pro features in official builds
requires a valid license from stroke.click. Official releases and updates
are distributed only through the official repository and stroke.click;
this license grants no right to operate a competing update or distribution
channel for the software.

5. Trademarks. This license grants no rights to the "Stroke" name, logo, or
other trademarks of the copyright holder.

6. Contributions. Unless you and the copyright holder agree otherwise in
writing, contributions you submit to the official repository are governed
by the project's Contributor License Agreement (.github/cla/cla.md) and may
be distributed under this license.

7. Termination. Your rights under this license end automatically if you
breach it. Rights are reinstated if the breach is fully cured within 30
days of you becoming aware of it, unless the copyright holder notifies you
otherwise.

8. Warranty and liability. THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY
OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND
NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE
LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF
CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE
SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.

For uses outside these terms (reselling, OEM bundling, managed hosting, or
anything you are unsure about), contact the copyright holder via
https://stroke.click.

You may do whatever you want with the Stroke source code and other source
files (from here on referred to as the "Stroke Source"), with the following
restrictions:

- If you publish any work derived from the Stroke Source, you must make it
apparent in some way that it is derived from Stroke.
- If you have created an executable program (from here on called "Your
Program") compiled from some source code and/or other source files (from
here on called "Your Source"), and if Your Source includes files or source
code copied or derived from the Stroke Source, then you may only publish
Your Program under the following conditions:
- Your Program does not contain any malware or hidden malicious content.
- You may not charge users money for Your Program, and Your Source must
contain the monetization systems present in the Stroke Source,
including the license-key activation, trial period tracking, and
payment system, without any alterations. All of these systems must be
active and working as intended in Your Program, and payments made
through them must go to the original author of Stroke. That is unless
Your Source features substantial improvements or additions to the
Stroke Source, such that Your Source should be considered its own,
derivative work, separate from the Stroke Source. Removing, bypassing,
or replacing the monetization systems, renaming or restyling the app,
or other cosmetic changes do not by themselves count as substantial
improvements or additions.
- Your Program is not published under the name "Stroke", or under a name
or icon so similar to Stroke's that users could mistake Your Program
for Stroke.

AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER
LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM,
OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE STROKE SOURCE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN
THE STROKE SOURCE.

# Notes on the Stroke License

The Stroke License is based on the MMF License, which Noah Nuebling wrote for
Mac Mouse Fix (https://github.com/noah-nuebling/mac-mouse-fix/blob/master/License).
The MMF License is itself based on the MIT and DBAD licenses.

I wrote it with two goals in mind:

1. To stop people from publishing apps built from Stroke that contain malware,
or that look just like Stroke except that when you buy a license, someone
other than me gets paid.
2. To let everyone else do anything they like with the Stroke source code.
That includes reusing it in their own free and paid projects, publishing
bug fixes and improvements to Stroke, and building something substantially
better on top of Stroke and charging for it.

There are no restrictions on how you use the source code. You can read it,
change it, build it, and run it yourself. The restrictions only apply to
publishing apps compiled from it.

Stroke is source-available, not open source. The Open Source Definition from
the Open Source Initiative does not allow conditions like the ones above, so
this is not an OSI-approved open source license.

Stroke is a paid app with a free trial. Buying Stroke Pro at
https://stroke.click buys a license key for the Stroke app. It does not change
these terms, and you do not need one to use the source code.

## Earlier contributions under the MIT License

Some code in Stroke was contributed while the project was licensed under the
MIT License. That code is included in the Stroke Source under the terms of the
MIT License, and the following notice applies to it:
