Agent-UX delivery for the read-refusal and linked-test receipt surfaces, plus the text-refusal overflow ladder. Four GitHub-reported items and three tracker-only items close in this PR; every one carries its before/after measurement and negative control in the tracker.
What changes
Contract-derived completeness corrections (Agent UX: --brief / --depth brief spellings get no replay correction (the #1528 fix covered only --full) #1626, pm-gh1626). Read refusals now offer a same-command replay for every equivalent completeness spelling, derived from runtime contracts instead of a hand-maintained pair list. CliFlagContract gains an optional values domain (declared on get/context/plan --depth), and resolveReadCompletenessControls joins it with each read-output surface's projection modes. get --brief replays as --depth brief, list --depth brief as --brief, --depth standard drops to the default, and aliased reads replay on their noun-first path. A command without an equivalent lists its own controls instead of pointing at other commands.
Comma-list --unset (Agent UX: --unset a,b is refused as one unknown field, unlike comma-list flags, and gets no replay correction #1633, pm-gh1633).create, update and update many accept comma-separated --unset field lists; each part is validated and refused by name. The split is unambiguous because schema add-field now refuses comma keys and flags (before this it registered foo,bar and advertised an unusable --foo,bar). update many --unset <unknown> refuses before planning instead of reporting no_effect.
Bounded selective test receipts (Agent UX: pm test --run with --only-last (or any selector) still prints every linked test record #1630, pm-gh1630).--match, --only-index and --only-last runs list only the selected tests; count and selection keep the full picture and tests_omitted names pm test <id> --list as the restore path. A 58-test --only-last receipt drops from 8,662 to 2,212 bytes in TOON and from 18,826 to 2,695 in JSON.
Compact lean receipts for quiet successes (pm-covpax). Under --lean, a passing linked-test run with no context mismatch and no failure category projects execution_context to its modes, trust reason and restore path and omits the all-zero failure_categories (2,178 → 865 bytes TOON; 2,645 → 1,166 JSON). Failures, skips, mismatches and default output keep full sandbox provenance.
Dash-leading values in unknown-option recovery (pm-stq61b). A quoted value that starts with -- (a close reason, a comment) is no longer dropped from the advertised replay; it is passed after a -- separator when only options follow, otherwise the refusal explains the parse instead of advertising a lossy retry.
Text refusal overflow ladder (pm-4oc353). Text refusals whose recovery bundle echoes a long argv no longer jump from full rendering to action-only and lose the What happened line. They drop the explanation, then extra collection entries, then the argv echo, then bound an oversized detail, each stage naming --json as the restore path. Short refusals are unchanged. The strict-create refusal for a cleared required option now states the actual rule.
The native read-surface tables move into a dependency-free module so completeness recovery stays off the formatter import path and pm --version works without installed dependencies. The --unset help text is shortened to fit the zero-headroom help-token ratchet.
pnpm changelog:pm:check: clean after regeneration.
Per-item measurements, negative controls and linked tests are recorded on pm-gh1626, pm-gh1633, pm-gh1630, pm-covpax, pm-stq61b, pm-4oc353 and pm-m6ig79.
Improve CLI refusal recovery, mutation ergonomics, and linked-test receipts while preserving actionable diagnostics and addressing dependency advisories.
New Features:
Support comma-separated field lists for --unset across create, update, and bulk update commands with per-field validation.
Provide bounded, selection-aware linked-test receipts with restore commands for omitted tests.
Derive same-command completeness corrections from runtime CLI contracts and read-surface capabilities.
Bug Fixes:
Preserve dash-leading values during unknown-option recovery instead of dropping them from replays.
Keep specific refusal details visible when oversized text diagnostics exceed their output budget.
Clear claim ownership completely when closing an item.
Retain meaningful execution context in lean receipts while omitting redundant success metadata.
Block comma-containing schema keys and flags to keep comma-separated field parsing unambiguous.
Enhancements:
Move native read-surface metadata into a dependency-free module for bootstrap-time recovery.
Build:
Raise dependency overrides for follow-redirects and minimatch to versions addressing registry security advisories.
Documentation:
Document same-command completeness recovery, comma-separated unset fields, selective test receipt restoration, and dependency advisories.
Tests:
Expand integration and unit coverage for completeness recovery, unset validation, selective receipts, lean output, dash-leading values, and bounded refusals.
Chores:
Regenerate the changelog and update tracker evidence and merge receipts.
Summary by cubic
Fixes agent-facing refusal and receipt friction: completeness misspellings replay on the same command, --unset accepts comma-separated lists, selective test receipts only list selected tests, and oversized text refusals keep the specific failure detail. Also raises pnpm overrides for follow-redirects and minimatch to clear two registry advisories that blocked the advisory gate.
Bug fixes
--unset on create, update, and update many accepts comma-separated lists; unique entries that resolve whole (like legacy comma-registered keys) stay intact, and schema add-field now refuses comma keys so the split is unambiguous.
update many --unset <unknown> refuses before planning instead of reporting no_effect, the planner resolves possibly aliased fields into the same keys validation accepted, and runtime fields declared only for update_many resolve under that scope instead of being refused.
close clears claim_principal with assignee, so a closed claimed item no longer keeps an active owner that only pm release could remove.
Quoted values starting with -- survive unknown-option recovery via a -- separator instead of being dropped from the advertised replay.
Text refusals whose recovery echoes a long argv no longer lose the What happened line; they drop explanation, collections, and argv echo progressively, each stage naming --json.
Selective --match/--only-index/--only-last runs list only selected tests, with tests_omitted naming pm test <id> --list plus --pm-path, --no-extensions, and shell escaping when the run used an explicit tracker root or suppressed extensions.
Under --lean, passing mismatch-free runs omit all-zero failure_categories and compact execution_context, while keeping the mismatch and trust booleans since a pass under an explicit override can be untrusted.
Completeness spellings replay on the same command (get --brief → --depth brief), derived from CliFlagContract.values and read-output surface projection modes instead of a hand-maintained pair list.
Read-surface tables moved into a dependency-free module so pm --version works without installed dependencies.
Written for commit eb93c97. Summary will update on new commits.
…-unset
Read refusals now offer a same-command replay for every equivalent
completeness spelling, derived from runtime contracts instead of a
hand-maintained pair list (GH-1626). CliFlagContract gains an optional
`values` domain, declared on get/context/plan --depth, and
resolveReadCompletenessControls joins it with each read-output surface's
projection modes. `get --brief` replays as `--depth brief`, `list --depth
brief` as `--brief`, `--depth standard` drops to the default, and aliased
reads replay on their noun-first path. A command without an equivalent lists
its own controls instead of pointing at other commands.
`--unset` on create, update and update many accepts comma-separated field
lists (GH-1633). Each part is validated and refused by name. The split is
unambiguous because schema add-field now refuses comma keys and flags; before
this, it registered `foo, bar` and advertised an unusable `--foo,bar`.
`update many --unset <unknown>` used to report no_effect in both dry run and
apply. It now refuses before planning, as `update` does.
…lues
Selective linked-test runs (`--match`, `--only-index`, `--only-last`) now
list only the selected tests. `count` and `selection` keep the full picture,
and `tests_omitted` names `pm test <id> --list` as the restore path. The
receipt no longer repeats the selection as a warning string. A 58-test
--only-last receipt drops from 8,662 to 2,212 bytes in TOON and from 18,826
to 2,695 in JSON (GH-1630).
Unknown-option recovery no longer drops a quoted value that starts with
`--`, such as a close reason or a comment. It passes the value after a `--`
separator when only options follow. Otherwise it explains the parse instead
of advertising a lossy retry (pm-stq61b).
The native read-surface tables move into a dependency-free module, so
completeness recovery stays off the formatter import path and `pm --version`
again works without installed dependencies. The `--unset` help is shortened
to fit the zero-headroom help-token ratchet. All four items are closed and
the changelog is regenerated.
Under --lean, a linked-test run that passed with no context mismatch and no
failure category now reports execution_context as its modes, trust reason
and 'rerun without --lean' restore path, and omits the all-zero
failure_categories. A 58-test --only-last run's lean receipt drops from 2,178
to 865 bytes in TOON and from 2,645 to 1,166 in JSON. Failures, skips, non-zero
categories, mismatches and default output keep the full sandbox provenance
(pm-covpax).
The JSON diagnostic projection walks the declared ladder, but text refusals
jumped from the full rendering straight to action-only. A refusal whose
recovery bundle echoed a long attempted command therefore lost its What
happened line, the only sentence saying what was wrong. Text refusals now
drop the explanation, then extra collection entries, then the argv echo,
and finally bound an oversized detail. Each stage appends a notice
pointing to --json. Only text that still overflows falls through to the
action-only projection, and short refusals are unchanged.
The strict create refusal for a cleared required option now states the
actual rule: --unset cannot satisfy a required scalar option, while
repeatable options accept an explicit --clear-* empty set (pm-4oc353).
pm-m6ig79 shipped in #1634. Its final PR run used 15 CI jobs (23 across
all PR workflows), all green, with an uncontended critical path of about
15 minutes. pm-covpax gains the escape class and gate evidence that the
defect evidence gate requires, including the negative control that was
actually run.
Merging origin/main (PR #1629) into this branch produced one field-aware
item merge on the pm-7zs0 reminder (expected_result taken from main).
This stages the durable receipt sidecar and records the reconciled
history stream so the receipt is settled rather than pending.
The merged Unreleased block lacked the pm-m6ig79 and pm-4oc353 entries
closed on this branch after the last generation, so changelog:pm:check
refused. Regenerated from closed tracker items; no hand edits.

… text refusal ladder
The hosted coverage gate reported error-guidance.ts lines 744 and 790
uncovered after #1635's ladder landed: a short suggested_retry kept by the
compact recovery stage, and the return of the full rendering when no stage
fits (which the hard ceiling then projects to action-only). Both stages now
have a regression test; the spec stays sandbox-free.
…two new registry advisories
GHSA-mrwp-f3q8-3g9p (follow-redirects 1.16.0-1.16.1, high) and
GHSA-g3hv-75wg-m249 (minimatch <11.0.1, moderate) were published on
2026-10-30 and the registry feed reported them from the next CI run on
main, so the dependency advisory gate refused every PR and the scheduled
release path. follow-redirects is reached only through the CodSpeed
benchmark plugin's Axios client and minimatch only through ESLint; both
are development dependencies.
The pnpm overrides now require follow-redirects >=1.16.2 and minimatch
>=11.0.1 <12; the lock resolves 1.16.2 and 11.0.3 and nothing else
changes. minimatch 11 keeps dual CJS/ESM exports, so the full eslint run
passes. Both releases clear pnpm's one-day minimum release age without
an exclusion. The advisory gate, cooldown, runtime-lock and bundle
integrity checks pass locally. Tracked and closed as pm-irviv0; the
dependency security guide records the repair and the gate's misleading
catch-all refusal message. Changelog regenerated.
Since the PR opened: 09ea39d adds the two regression tests the hosted coverage gate asked for (compact-recovery and full-fallback stages of the text refusal ladder), and a4a7af5 repairs the two registry advisories published on 2026-10-30 (follow-redirects 1.16.2 and minimatch 11.0.3 via pnpm overrides, tracked as pm-irviv0) that were blocking Gates (static) on main and here.

The new retry strips global bootstrap tokens from the invocation, including a possible explicit tracker path, before advertising a mutation replay.
Replaying the suggestion can close an item in a different tracker, or fail to find the intended item.
This can occur when: A dash-leading close reason is refused in an invocation using --pm-path to select a non-default tracker, and the remaining tokens pass the retry guard.

Review comment at @src/cli/error-guidance.ts at line 1846:
Update the suggestedRetryArgs construction around stripGlobalBootstrapTokens so
a retry preserves an explicit --pm-path and its tracker path from args, ensuring
the mutation replay targets the same tracker as the original invocation.

Resolve bulk --unset runtime aliases before building the preview.
appendUnsetMutationPlans looks up each token by its normalized spelling only. A runtime field's CLI alias, such as lead for metadata key team_owner, is not found, so the dry-run preview omits that clear. Apply passes the raw token to runUpdate, which resolves it. An item whose only change is that alias is skipped and never cleared. This predates the change.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 1a72d089ddf8); the change keeps it reachable.

…he complexity ceiling
The hosted static gate reported projectLinkedTestEvidence at CodeFactor
complexity 18 against the ceiling of 16 after the quiet-success receipt
landed. The shared execution-context resolution and the quiet-success
predicate are now named helpers; behaviour and the pm-covpax receipts are
unchanged (output and test-command suites pass).
The hosted defect evidence gate refused the closed advisory item for a
missing escape class and gate evidence. The item now records
escape_class scanner_finding and a gate_strengthened disposition on the
development-dependency-security gate, with a runnable negative control
that asserts the minimatch version resolved under eslint and the
follow-redirects version resolved under the CodSpeed plugin's Axios are at
or above the patched releases. The gate passes locally with zero findings.
…in restore_with, and cover the refusal ladder branches
Review findings on #1635:
- A legacy field key that was registered with a comma (before schema
add-field refused them) could no longer be cleared, because every --unset
entry was split on commas first. parseCommandUnsetTargets and the
update-many planner now keep an entry whole when it resolves as a whole
and split only unresolved entries.
- A selective linked-test receipt's tests_omitted.restore_with named
'pm test <id> --list' even when the run used an explicit tracker root, so
the restore read would have targeted the current workspace. The receipt
now appends --pm-path <root> (quoted when needed) from the invocation.
- The TESTING guide states that tests_omitted appears only when a
selection skipped at least one test.
- The hosted coverage gate still reported three uncovered branches in the
text refusal ladder: next_best_command retained by the compact recovery
stage, an echo-only bundle dropped entirely, and no dash-leading value
retry when a positional follows the value. Each has a regression test.
e2a477d addresses the three findings (resolve-first --unset entries, tracker path preserved in restore_with, TESTING sentence qualified) and adds the regression tests the coverage gate asked for. Earlier in this round: 74b56a7 split projectLinkedTestEvidence to meet the complexity ceiling and 096f548 classified pm-irviv0 with gate evidence.

…over the remaining review branches
The graph-composition assurance refused the branch at the prose-edge-gaps
ceiling (1,244 against 1,233): the closeout comments on pm-gh1633,
pm-irviv0, pm-m6ig79 and pm-stq61b name twelve lineage items without a
typed edge. Those pairs now carry related edges, which are not
ceiling-bound, and the measurement is back at the ceiling.
The coverage gate's last three partial branches have tests: a dash-leading
value with no invocation argv or absent from it, the restore_with tracker
path flag (absent, blank, plain, quoted) and the resolve-first --unset
expansion without a default resolver. Changelog regenerated.
f86d153: the graph-composition assurance had refused the branch at the prose-edge-gaps ceiling (twelve lineage ids named in closeout comments without a typed edge; they now carry related edges), and the last three partially covered branches from the coverage gate have tests.

…keep code-specific lean rationale, and report an unknown holder origin
CodeRabbit raised six findings on #1637 and hosted coverage found four
uncovered branches. Every finding is fixed here and every branch is
now covered.
Terminal-state no-op (GH-1628):
- A whitespace-only --close-reason on an already-closed item answered
terminal_state_unchanged even with governance.require_close_reason on,
while the same request on an open item is refused. The predicate now
sends a supplied-but-blank reason to the refusing close route only
while a reason is required; an optional blank reason stays a no-op.
- The classification read holds no item lock. If another writer reopened
the item before the field-only write, the request dropped its status.
The helper now checks the status the locked write returned and hands a
reopened item to the closure writer (closeRoutedItem, now shared with
the ordinary route).
- docs/COMMANDS.md now says other requested fields move updated_at and
write history only when they change a stored value.
Lean refusals and typed holder (GH-1610):
- projectLeanErrorEnvelope dropped every why. It now drops only the
generic rationale, matching lean text and the documented contract.
- Mixed example lists kept the generic `pm --help`. The new SDK helper
withoutGenericRefusalExamples filters each generic entry for text and
JSON alike.
- An unreadable or silent history reported the holder as `assignment`.
claim_source / ItemOwnershipConflict.source now say `unknown`. The SDK
surface snapshot acknowledges the union widening; both types are
unreleased and were introduced on this branch.
Coverage (GH-1627 and the above): in-process tests now cover the next
selection-budget audit (camel and snake spellings, intent suppression),
null-column restore without recorded positions, holder rendering without
a time or origin, a changed versus repeated --completed-at, and the
routed not-found refusal. Before this, those paths only ran in spawned
CLI processes.
This also merges the updated #1635 head.
…andUnsetFieldTokens
Removing update-many's private alias table left parseCommandUnsetTargets
as the only caller. It always passes a resolver and returns early when no
--unset values were given, so the optional callback and the undefined-list
fallback were unreachable branches. Hosted coverage flagged them at 99.99%.
The signature now states what the caller guarantees.
Your included review limit is currently reached under our Fair Usage Limits Policy. This review may still proceed through usage-based billing if eligible. Your next included review will be available in 19 seconds.
The lean projections now filter generic examples per entry through
withoutGenericRefusalExamples, which left the all-or-nothing predicate
with no caller. Hosted coverage flagged it as an uncovered function. It
was added unreleased on this stack (absent from main and v2026.10.30),
so it comes out of the ./sdk, ./sdk/contracts and ./sdk/runtime barrels
instead of staying as a dead public export. The SDK surface snapshot
acknowledges the removal.
This also merges the #1635 head, which closes the shared-unset-fields
coverage gap here as well.

… under update_many, and keep lean trust booleans without a rerun hint
CodeRabbit's full review of a26a562 raised six findings. This commit
fixes five; the sixth is tracked separately.
- close: clearCloseAssignee deleted assignee but kept claim_principal,
so every claimed item that was closed kept an active owner until a
separate pm release. Closure now clears both and reports each in
changed_fields. The four closed items still carrying the residue, and
pm-m6ig79, are released through the CLI. Filed and closed as
pm-8xgg7i, with a regression test that fails against the old close.ts.
- update many: the --unset resolver looked runtime fields up under the
update command only, so a field declared just for update_many was
refused before planning and could not resolve on the per-row apply.
Validation, planning and per-row parsing now use the invoking scope.
A plain update still refuses the field. A negative control fails
against the previous sources.
- lean pm test receipts keep mismatch_detected: false and the trusted
boolean, because a pass under an explicit override can be untrusted.
The hint no longer says "rerun without --lean", since a rerun repeats
mutating flags such as --remove-index. It now says the omitted fields
are not retained.
- docs/TESTING.md tells readers to run the stored restore_with command
so --pm-path and --no-extensions are kept.
Not changed here: PowerShell expands $(...) and backticks inside the
CommandLineToArgvW double quotes that quoteCommandArg emits on win32.
That affects every rendered recovery command, so it is tracked as
pm-kjoudp for a single shell-dialect decision.

…and give pm-irviv0 a failing negative control
CodeRabbit's full review of 20821ce found three tracker-record issues.
- pm-covpax: acceptance_criteria, resolution, expected_result and
close_reason still described an explicit restore path. They now state
that the omitted context is not retained and that a separate run
without --lean reports it. closed_at and the append-only history are
unchanged.

that only asserts the safe versions, so it could not fail. It now
checks out the pre-fix commit 1a72d08 in a worktree, installs it,
and expects pnpm quality:dependencies to exit non-zero. Run locally it
installed and exited 1, matching hosted run 41147514600.

…scope with resolvePmRoot precedence
CodeRabbit's fourth full review of #1635 raised one Major and three
minor findings. All four are fixed here, on the branch that now carries
the whole stack to main.
- --unset was declared as a list flag, so bootstrap joined repeated
occurrences into one comma token. --unset 'parent, release'
--unset assignee became --unset=parent,release,assignee, and a legacy
comma-named field entry could be re-split into ordinary fields.
Commander already collects repeated --unset values, so the flag
contracts declare it repeatable (every multi-value consumer treats
repeatable and list alike). The contract snapshot changes exactly that
attribute on the three declarations. The new bootstrap test fails with
the list declaration restored.
- resolveLinkedTestRestoreScope now follows resolvePmRoot: a blank
--path falls through to PM_PATH.
- docs/DEVELOPMENT_DEPENDENCY_SECURITY.md records that minimatch is also
a direct dependency of @stryker-mutator/core, which the override
covers.
- pm-irviv0's negative control is now a valid command. It preserves the
control's exit status through worktree cleanup and also requires both
advisory ids in the gate receipt, so an unrelated feed error cannot
satisfy it. Run locally against 1a72d08, it exited 0 with both ids
present.
This PR's commits now land through #1638, which carries the whole stack (#1635 → #1637 → #1638) to main in one CI cycle. All four CodeRabbit review rounds here are addressed, the last in 647f95d on #1638. GitHub marks this PR merged when #1638 merges, so please don't merge it separately.
…ose and harden lean refusals and holder evidence
CodeRabbit reviewed the 62 files of this stack that #1635's review
rounds had not covered. It posted one Major and eleven Minor findings;
all twelve are fixed here.
Terminal no-op (GH-1628):
- Major. On a closed item, --status closed --unset close-reason took the
repeated-state path and removed a reason that
governance.require_close_reason requires, then reported success.
assertRoutedCloseKeepsRequiredReason now refuses with the closure
writer's close_reason_required before either route writes. It
tokenizes --unset like the update parser and uses the shared
CLOSE_REASON_UNSET_ALIASES.
- The repeated-state path re-checks the reason and completion time, not
only the status, on the item its locked write returned. A concurrent
change goes to the closure writer.
Lean refusals and holder evidence (GH-1610):
- A missing claim_source defaults to unknown, never claim.
- resolveItemOwnershipConflict trusts an assignee history entry only if
it set the current holder.
- Lean text never exceeds the default bounded rendering.
- The text Held by line caps the holder at 120 code points; JSON keeps
the full value.
- Commander usage refusals in text honour --lean.
- projectLeanRecoveryPayload omits an all-undefined remainder.
- COMMANDS.md and AGENT_UX_CONTRACTS.md document the unknown origin.
Ranking policy (GH-1618):
- The floor tier and the weighted reason read the registry's
in_progress_status instead of the literal in_progress.
Tracker:
- pm-irviv0's negative control accepts either the GHSA ids or the
registry feed's numeric ids (1244003, 1244012). Re-run against
1a72d08, it exits 0.
Each behavioural fix has a regression test that fails against the
previous source. The full static chain (except mutation testing) and
4,683 affected tests pass locally.
Lands the agent-UX stack (#1635, #1637, #1638): same-command corrections and bounded receipts, terminal-state no-ops, bounded pm next, lean refusals with typed claim holders, the pm next ranking policy, the close claim-principal fix (pm-8xgg7i), the development-dependency advisory overrides (pm-irviv0), and the pm-changelog 2026.10.31 grammar census.
