Summary

Package versions come from the release tag. The release now fails before any packaging unless the tag is exactly v plus the apps/backend/Cargo.toml version, in plain MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH form.

  • xtask checks the tag only on tag builds (GITHUB_REF_TYPE=tag). CI dry-runs pass --version explicitly and are unaffected.
  • AGENTS.md and the release.yml header describe the release step: bump Cargo.toml, then push the matching tag.

Test plan

  • cargo test -p xtask (new release_tags_must_match_the_plain_crate_version)
  • Simulated tag builds: v0.1.0 passes; v0.1.0-beta.1 fails with release tag v0.1.0-beta.1 must be v0.1.0 to match apps/backend/Cargo.toml
  • CI packaging dry-run with --version 0.0.0-ci still passes

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Release Process
    • Release tags must now use the vMAJOR.MINOR.PATCH format and match the version recorded in the backend package.
    • Release builds reject tags that are unprefixed, mismatched, or include a prerelease suffix.
    • Update the package version before creating a matching release tag. The build and release behavior is otherwise unchanged.

Package versions come from the release tag. Reject any tag other than
v<apps/backend/Cargo.toml version>, a plain MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH, before
packaging starts; prerelease suffixes are not valid in every package
format.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Release version selection now uses the backend crate version. GitHub tag builds require a matching vMAJOR.MINOR.PATCH tag. The release guidance and workflow comment describe the required version bump and tag format.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 70700

Explicit --version packaging runs can fail on a tag ref with a mismatched tag, which contradicts the stated contract. Current CI and release workflows are not affected. A small fix to parse the arguments first would remove the gap.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Read --version before validating the default tag.

When GITHUB_REF_TYPE=tag and GITHUB_REF_NAME is missing or mismatched, default_version()? fails before the parser reaches --version. An explicit-version packaging dry-run therefore fails, although the release contract says explicit --version dry-runs are unaffected. Parse the arguments first, then call default_version() only if no version was supplied. Keep tag validation for packaging that uses the default version.
