Summary

  • provider: Groq rejects every request — prompt_cache_key is unsupported #291 — strict OpenAI-compatible servers (Groq, for one) answer 400 for unknown request fields, and prompt_cache_key is one. Same pattern as the existing reasoning / previous_response_id retries: a 400 that names prompt_cache_key as rejected replays the request once without it, on both the chat and Responses paths. No host list.
  • Explicit key vs inherited plugin provider — a nested gray -p inherits the parent session's plugin provider via env; that (or a saved plugin provider) silently overrode an explicit --api-key/GRAY_API_KEY + base URL. An explicit key now drops the plugin selection. gray-fusion, which selects plugins via env, already unsets GRAY_API_KEY, so it's unaffected.
  • native API 400 "tool use concurrency issues" breaks stream after tool-list prefix change; retries sometimes exhaust #289 (gray half) — compaction summaries carry an x-gray-isolated header to plugin relays (never real APIs). Needs gray-claude-sub#17.

Closes #291. Refs #289.

Test plan

  • cargo test -p gray-provider (24), new explicit_key_tests in gray
  • cargo clippy --locked --workspace -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --check
  • Real Groq: 0.2.10 reproduces provider: Groq rejects every request — prompt_cache_key is unsupported #291 exactly (key was revoked before the PR build could run)
  • Fake Groq (exact 400 body): 0.2.10 fails; PR build sends with key → 400 → retries without → reply
  • Nested run with inherited claude plugin env: 0.2.10 routes to the plugin (404); PR build honours the explicit key; without a key the plugin inheritance still holds
  • Live run with gray-claude-sub#17

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • OpenAI requests now retry without a prompt cache key when the service rejects that key, helping compatible requests complete successfully.
    • Isolated requests routed through relay endpoints now retain their isolation status.
  • Configuration
    • A nonempty --api-key or GRAY_API_KEY now takes precedence over saved plugin credentials. In this case, plugin selection is ignored.

Walkthrough

The change adds an isolation header to qualifying dynamic relay requests, retries certain Chat and Responses requests without prompt_cache_key, and changes configuration resolution when an explicit API key accompanies plugin credentials.

Changes: Isolated relay requests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Carry isolation state to relay requests
crates/gray-provider/src/openai.rs, crates/gray-provider/src/openai/dynamic.rs
Dynamic stream requests carry the isolation flag. The request adds x-gray-isolated: 1 only when the request is isolated and credential metadata contains relay_url. Tests cover all four isolated and relay-metadata combinations.

Cache-key rejection fallback

Layer / File(s) Summary
Identify cache-key rejection responses
crates/gray-provider/src/openai/request.rs
A shared rejection-hint list and predicate identify HTTP 400 errors that mention prompt_cache_key and a rejection hint. Tests cover matching and non-matching errors.
Retry Chat and Responses requests
crates/gray-provider/src/openai/streaming.rs
Chat and Responses requests retry qualifying failures without prompt_cache_key. The retry preserves the existing attempt and retry state.

Explicit API key precedence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve explicit keys against plugin credentials
crates/gray/src/config.rs
When a nonempty CLI or environment API key accompanies plugin credentials, configuration resolution clears the selected provider and plugin credential references. Tests cover when plugin selection is cleared or retained.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Possibly related PRs

  • vstaln/gray#273: Adds isolated provider completion tasks; this change carries isolation state into dynamic streams and marks isolated relay requests.
  • vstaln/gray#286: Adds a separate compaction provider and fallback summary flow; this change preserves isolation on the related summary request path.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 5ac61

The explicit API key precedence change can send a user's key to a saved plugin relay endpoint. It can also make nested sessions drop or fall back to the wrong provider. The cache-key retry misses some rejection wordings. These should be fixed before merge, along with the two earlier open cancellation and keep-warm concerns.

Explanation

The changed provider code directly implements #291. The RequestGate changes cover the overlapping turn, keep_warm, and compaction requests described for #289. The compaction and deadlock tests support those changes. No unrelated change is established by the reviewed summary or focused diff.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title identifies the main provider changes: avoiding rejected prompt_cache_key values and handling isolated provider requests. It is specific and related to the changeset, although it is longer than necessary.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[ #291 ] PASS: ModelCaps disables prompt_cache_key for api.groq.com, and the Responses, Chat Completions, and dynamic-profile assignments now honor that capability. The supplied summary also reports a Groq capability test. [#289] FAIL: the PR adds RequestGate serialization for turn, warm-cache, and compaction requests, including in-turn deadlock avoidance. It does not implement or establish the issue's required detection and repair of malformed parallel tool_use/tool_result history, and no focused test proves that the tool-list-change path preserves the required history structure.

Resolution

For #289, add the required partial parallel tool-call history detection and repair before resend, or provide reviewable existing-path evidence and focused automated tests that prove the history is already repaired and that the tool-list-change path does not reserialize it incorrectly. Keep the request gate if it is also required to prevent overlapping session requests.

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 7 functions across 7 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Assert the serialized Groq request body.

The new test checks the capability value only. The existing request tests either use a non-Groq mock host or test request mapping without applying ModelCaps. They do not detect a regression that leaves prompt_cache_key in an outgoing Groq request. Add a provider-path test that uses Groq capabilities and asserts that the serialized body omits this field.

Make the gate wait cancellable.

self.request_gate.lock_turn().await is outside the tokio::select! that watches ctx.cancel. Another request can hold the gate. Examples are a background compaction summary or a keep_warm refresh stream. In that case the turn waits until that request finishes. User cancellation is ignored during the wait. Before this change, cancellation worked at this point.

Race lock_turn() against ctx.cancel.cancelled(). lock_turn is cancel-safe. Dropping the future while it waits on lock() leaves no state behind, because the flag is set only after the lock is acquired.

Re-check the refresh deadline after acquiring the gate.

The current turn's warm task starts before the turn acquires request_gate. If the turn holds the gate past deadline, dropping the turn guard does not cancel the warm task. The task can acquire the gate afterward and send a late refresh using the same provider request.

Add the deadline check after acquiring the gate.

Compaction summaries run under IsolatedStream, but the dynamic (relay)
path never told the relay. gray-claude-sub then took a background summary
for the next turn of its live conversation: it queued the summarize
prompt into the pooled child and superseded the tool calls still parked
there, desyncing the native transcript from gray's history — the source
of the sticky '400 due to tool use concurrency issues' (#289).
Strict OpenAI-compatible servers (Groq, for one) answer 400 for unknown
request fields. Same pattern as the reasoning and previous_response_id
retries: a 400 naming prompt_cache_key as rejected replays the request
once without it. No host list.
