Summary

Implement D01 on main using the existing React/Base UI kit. Motion tokens are 120/220/320/180ms; rail press scales to 0.97; keyboard focus uses a 2px ring with 2px offset. The persisted Appearance preference synchronizes html[data-reduce-motion] at startup, on switch actions and real cross-window storage events. CSS and kit JavaScript motion honor reduced motion. Banner reuses existing classes and status/alert semantics. No new locale copy.

Recovery commit 5fc8d22 fixes OS-only rail press specificity and subscribes to exact Home control mounts before the second navigation's computed animation assertion. The OS-only active regression keeps the original acceptance assertions; no sleeps or retries.

Validation

Latest SHA: 5fc8d22618cfba6b6de580fcd02327857188d237.

Typecheck, lint, locale audit and production build pass. Unit suite: 64 files, 513 tests pass; one pre-existing optional backend-dependent skip. Full actual Electron E2E: 244/244 pass, zero skipped/flaky/unexpected, retries 0.

Actual native Electron/X11 automation passes at 960x640 and 1440x900 in both themes. Real XTest keyboard, rail press and Appearance switch input; OS-window screenshots inspected. Normal pressed transform is matrix(0.97, 0, 0, 0.97, 0, 0); OS-only reduced-motion transform is none. Toggle sets the root attribute; Getting started ring, Home heading/composer and sidebar animations report none. Native kit catalog verifies 57 enabled controls per theme, exactly three menu items, dialog input/actions and Undo focus. Two actual native windows verify a trusted storage event and first-window motion synchronization. Banner source rendering verifies all three tones and supplied action markup.

Latest CI: https://github.com/CortexLM/desktop/actions/runs/37874346166. All 15 jobs pass, including Linux/macOS/Windows E2E and macOS/Windows packaged launch smoke. CodeQL and CodeRabbit pass. Zero unresolved review threads; the actual specificity finding resolved after fix push.

Evidence: /root/cortex-dev/ux-implementation/D01/REPORT.md, D01-manual-qa.md, recovery-final/. Before/after captures, exact invocations, failed collector attempts and final results retained. No merge or deployment.

Scope and exact remaining manual breadth

Only kit implementation and directly related existing E2E tests change. Related-test exception covers tests/e2e/kit-motion.spec.ts and tests/e2e/chrome.spec.ts. Linux evidence is actual source-built native Electron, not a browser pretending native. OS media preference is emulated in actual Electron; no desktop OS settings application change claimed.

Not claimed: manually traversing every control instance on every product screen; installed macOS/Windows manual screenshot inspection; standalone Banner callback behavior in a native window; shell theme JavaScript burst/track and App startViewTransition invocation outside kit scope. Requested computed ring/route suppression is verified.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a reusable banner for informational, warning, and error messages, with appropriate accessibility announcements.
  • Improvements
    • Improved keyboard focus visibility and pressed-button feedback.
    • Reduced-motion preferences now apply consistently across animations and transitions, including after changing the setting or reloading.
    • Expanded theme controls can extend beyond their container.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The UI kit synchronizes the reduced-motion preference with a document attribute and applies it to motion behavior and styles. The update adds motion and focus tests and exports a Banner component with tone-specific accessibility roles.

Changes

Motion and reduced-motion behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reduced-motion preference synchronization
packages/app/src/kit/ui.tsx, tests/e2e/chrome.spec.ts, tests/e2e/kit-motion.spec.ts
The UI reads the stored preference at startup and updates the document attribute on matching storage events. Segmented controls and mode-switcher animation use the shared reduced-motion check. Tests cover preference changes, persistence, and system reduced-motion behavior.
Motion tokens and interactive styles
packages/app/src/kit/styles.css, tests/e2e/kit-motion.spec.ts
Styles define shared motion durations, rail-button transitions and pressed feedback, visible focus outlines, and reduced-motion overrides. Tests check the tokens, focus outlines, and pressed states.

Banner component

Layer / File(s) Summary
Banner rendering and accessibility role
packages/app/src/kit/ui.tsx
The exported Banner renders children and an optional action with a tone-specific class. Error tone uses role="alert"; other tones use role="status".

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 5fc8d

The saved and OS reduced-motion preferences suppress the relevant motion effects, including rail-button press. No actionable change-related merge risk remains.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5fc8d

The changes are confined to desktop presentation preferences and an additive UI component. No new privileged access path was identified. Cross-window preference behavior and broader security coverage remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected preference flow has document-wide presentation effects and changes UI selection timing. Its traced sinks are DOM attributes, styling, animations and ordinary navigation; no tenant, credential, permission or service authority expansion was identified in this flow.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The persisted preference is recognized only when its value is the literal string true. Banner renders caller-supplied React nodes without adding a raw-HTML insertion or privileged action-dispatch mechanism.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The E2E source covers enabling the preference, persistence across reload, disabling it and OS-only reduced motion. It does not establish cross-window storage delivery, same-document storage-clear recovery or rapid repeated selection behavior.
