Summary

Adds MLX as a fourth autocomplete engine next to Apple Intelligence, Open Source and Local
Endpoint. On an Apple Silicon Mac the user picks "MLX" in Settings → Engine & Model, clicks
Install MLX, picks a model, and Cotabby runs Apple's mlx-lm itself. No terminal needed.

The engine is opt-in. Nothing is installed or launched until the user selects MLX and clicks
Install. On Intel Macs the picker shows "MLX (Unavailable)".

What this is for, measured honestly. The point is MLX-format models (mlx-community
conversions, your own MLX fine-tunes). It is not a big speed win. Measured in Release with
Gemma 4 E4B base, using warm medians over alternating runs:

Per token 8-token suggestion
mlx_lm.server 0.32.0, mlx-community/gemma-4-e4b-5bit 25 ms 254 ms
Cotabby's in-process llama.cpp, gemma-4-E4B-UD-Q5_K_XL.gguf 27–31 ms 287 ms

How it works

  • MLXToolchainProvisioner (Services/Runtime/MLX/) uses an existing mlx_lm.server at
version ≥ 0.32.0 when it finds one: Cotabby's own folder, ~/.local/bin, or /opt/homebrew/bin.
If there is none, Install does the following:
    • It downloads uv 0.12.18, checks the archive's SHA-256, and verifies the binary's
code signature (Astral's team ID). A mismatch on either aborts the install.
    • It then runs uv tool install mlx-lm==0.32.0 --python 3.12 into
~/Library/Application Support/<app>/MLX/. uv brings its own Python, so the system Python is
      never touched.
    • A half-finished install does not count as installed: it has to pass the version probe first.
    • Remove deletes that folder. Downloaded models stay.
  • MLXServerManager owns the mlx_lm.server child process:
    • Launch: it binds to 127.0.0.1 only on a free port, with HF_HUB_OFFLINE=1 (the server
never downloads anything) and a capped prompt cache (default 1 GiB).
    • Readiness: it polls /v1/models, then sends a warm-up completion before reporting ready.
    • Crash: it restarts after 1 s, 5 s and 30 s, and reports failed after 3 failures within
      2 minutes.
    • Dead generator: mlx_lm answers 404 while the process stays up. The engine confirms this
with GET /health before asking for a restart.
    • Stop and orphans: SIGTERM, then SIGKILL after 3 s, on engine change and on quit. At launch
it cleans up a server left behind by a crashed Cotabby (pid file plus a command-line check).
    • Logs: a filtered 20-line tail of stderr, kept in memory, is shown as the failure reason.
Only under -cotabby-debug (the switch that turns on the JSONL logs) is the full stderr also
appended to ~/Library/Logs/<app>/mlx-server.log (rotated at 2 MB). A normal run writes
      nothing to disk.
  • MLXModelDownloader works with the shared Hugging Face cache:
    • It lists usable MLX models there, using one compatibility rule for cached models, custom repo
      ids and the selected model.
    • A model counts as downloaded only when the snapshot refs/main names is complete: every file
is readable and a sharded model's index finds every shard. The offline server resolves the
      repo id through refs/main.
    • Downloads and deletes run through the toolchain's Python and show progress. Delete asks first,
because the cache is shared with other tools.
    • A custom repo id is checked against the Hugging Face API. A pasted model URL, with or without
https://, is reduced to org/name, and dataset or Space links are refused. A custom model's
download shows its progress, Cancel and any error under the custom field.
    • The catalog offers mlx-community/gemma-4-e4b-5bit (recommended) and gemma-4-e2b-6bit.
  • MLXServerDesireResolver (pure) turns engine, model, cache cap, toolchain state and cached
models into one "run this server / stop" decision. CotabbyAppEnvironment applies those
decisions in order, so a quick switch away and back cannot reach the manager out of order.
  • Request path: a second OpenAICompatibleSuggestionEngine instance (Backend.mlx) talks to
    the loopback server.
    • It sends mlx_lm's sampling fields (top_k, min_p, repetition_penalty, seed, and
stop: ["\n"] for single-line fields) and ends the stream at a sentence end using
      DecodeStopPolicy.
    • These fields are only encoded for MLX, so the endpoint engine's requests do not change.
    • SuggestionEngineRouter routes .mlx to this instance. When the server is not ready, the
request fails at once with the reason, with no fallback to another engine.
  • Engine rules:
    • SuggestionEngineKind.isOnDevice treats MLX as on-device: typing history, the document tail
and the local visual-context limits apply.
    • allowsSpeculativeGeneration keeps predict-ahead and speculative continuation off for MLX, as
for the endpoint. mlx_lm.server 0.32.0 does stop a request whose client disconnected: the
handler's next write fails, the request is marked stopped, and the generation thread drops it
at the next token. But every request runs on that one generation thread, queued or batched
beside the request the user is waiting for, so speculative requests would delay real
suggestions. With in-process llama, a speculative decode yields to the real request at once.
    • MLX uses the local debounce, not the endpoint's longer pause. A request abandoned mid-typing
costs the server only about a token before it is dropped, and the stream also ends early at a
      sentence end.
    • While MLX is selected, the llama model is unloaded (LocalRuntimeResidencyPolicy), so two
      models never share memory.

Privacy

During generation nothing leaves the Mac: the server listens on 127.0.0.1 and runs offline.
Nothing the user types is written to disk; mlx-server.log exists only under -cotabby-debug.
The network is used only when the user clicks something:

  • Install downloads uv, mlx-lm and Python.
  • Download fetches a model from Hugging Face.
  • Check looks up a custom repo id on the Hugging Face API.

Local access to the server. The server listens on loopback only, with no authentication
(mlx_lm.server 0.32 has no auth option). While it runs, any local process can send it completions
and use the loaded model. That includes processes of another macOS user on the same Mac. Such a
process cannot read Cotabby's prompts or responses: each request is its own HTTP exchange. These
limits apply:

  • The server runs only while MLX is the selected engine. It stops when the user switches engines
and when Cotabby quits, and an orphan left by a crash is cleaned up at the next launch.
  • Each launch uses a fresh free port picked by the OS (bind to 127.0.0.1:0), not a fixed,
    well-known port.
  • Before reporting the server ready, MLXServerManager checks that the answering socket belongs
to the process it launched (MLXProcessInspector.ownsTCPSocket). If another program answered on
that port, the launch fails, so Cotabby never sends its prompts to it. This check runs once per
    launch, not on every request.

Settings and defaults

  • New UserDefaults keys: cotabbyMLXModel, cotabbyMLXPromptCacheBytes (default 1 GiB, clamped
to 256 MiB–8 GiB), cotabbyBatteryMLXModel and cotabbyPluggedInMLXModel. All of them are in
    the reset list.
  • An older build that reads the engine raw value mlx falls back the way it does today for unknown
    values.
  • The Engine & Model pane has an MLX section: install state and phase, Install / Remove / Retry,
the failure log tail, catalog and cached models with download, cancel and delete, a custom model
field, and an Advanced prompt-cache cap.
  • MLX models appear in the power-source pickers, and the Home status card shows the selected MLX
model or the reason MLX is not ready.
  • The menu bar shows MLX's start-up state and failure reason; it does not show the model.
  • The Settings attention badge lights up when MLX cannot generate.

Resource usage

  • The Performance pane's Live Resource Usage adds the MLX server's CPU and memory while it runs,
with the label "CPU and Memory include the MLX server". Without that, an MLX user's graph would
    read near zero.
  • The menu bar popover shows a compact Cotabby uses CPU · RAM · GPU line, adding "incl. MLX"
when the server runs. It samples only while the popover is open, with its own CPU baselines, so
it never disturbs the Performance pane.

Not included / follow-ups

  • Rewrite with MLX. Selection rewrite is not on main. A later PR can add "Rewrite on every
engine". The per-server pid file and log labels that only a second (rewrite) server needed are
    left out.
  • Performance Tuning integration. It does not exist on main, so the MLX engine's per-request
token and first-token stats are left out. MLX latency is recorded in the existing Performance
metrics under the repo id, like the other engines.
  • The Performance pane's GPU graph does not include the MLX server yet. CPU and memory do.
Including it needs the store's GPU baseline to restart when the watched pid set changes, which
the menu line's GPUShareTracker already does. That is easy to share in a follow-up.
  • Not in v1: native in-process MLX (mlx-swift), MLX in onboarding, Hugging Face tokens for
gated or private repos, and the llama-only extras on MLX (prefill while typing, predict-ahead,
    speculative continuation).
  • Not hash-pinned: mlx-lm's transitive Python dependencies are resolved by uv at install time.
uv itself and the mlx-lm version are pinned.

Test plan

  • Cotabby and Cotabby Dev schemes build (CODE_SIGNING_ALLOWED=NO).
  • The touched and new test classes pass: 388 tests, 0 failures. This covers MLX models, cache
scanner, compatibility, toolchain rules and provisioner, process runner, server manager
(including stop-while-starting, broken generator, orphan cleanup), downloader, desire
resolver, log filter and writer, engine wiring, API client, engine, router, settings, request
factory, selection policy, residency policy, typing history, resource sampling and menu
    monitor.
  • Full suite: 2955 tests, 14 skipped, 1 failure. The one failure is
    AXTextGeometryResolverTests.test_resolveCaretRect_returnsRealGeometry_forNativeTextField, a
known failure on this Mac that is unrelated to MLX. It passed in the previous full run
    (2950 tests, 0 failures).
  • swiftlint lint --strict (0.63.2, as in CI) reports no violations, and xcodegen generate
    leaves the project unchanged.
  • The live test MLXLiveEvalTests (real mlx_lm.server) is compiled only with RUN_MLX_EVAL.
It was not run for this PR.
  • Manual checks, done on the fork's signed Release build (same MLX code, plus the fork's other features), on an M-series Mac:
    • Install MLX, select gemma-4-e4b-5bit: ghost text in daily use across apps; first suggestion ~170 ms after a ~8.6 s server start.
    • Quit Cotabby and no mlx_lm.server remains. Force-quit (SIGTERM to the app) and relaunch, and the orphan is cleaned up.
    • A live dead-generator episode (every request 404 "generation thread died") is what led to the /health-confirmed restart in this PR.
    • Not yet re-checked on this branch built from main: engine switch, kill -9 restarts and the 3-failure "failed" state, Remove MLX.

MLX is a fourth engine kind (raw value "mlx", Apple Silicon only) that counts as on-device:
typing history, the document tail and the local visual-context limits stay available to it,
while predict-ahead and speculative continuation stay off as for the endpoint. Settings gain the
MLX model id, the prompt-cache cap (1 GiB, clamped to 256 MiB...8 GiB) and the per-power-source
MLX models. The MLX values (paths, repo ids, catalog, states) and the pure rules (cache scan,
model compatibility, toolchain rules, server decision, log filter, generator failure) come with
their tests.

MLXToolchainProvisioner finds a compatible mlx-lm (>= 0.32.0) or installs a pinned mlx-lm 0.32.0
with uv 0.12.18, whose download is SHA-256 checked and whose code signature must name Astral's
team. MLXServerManager launches mlx_lm.server on 127.0.0.1 with HF_HUB_OFFLINE=1, waits for
readiness and a warm-up, restarts it after a crash or a dead generator (confirmed through
/health), stops it on engine change and quit, cleans up an orphan from a crashed launch, and keeps
its stderr in mlx-server.log under -cotabby-debug. MLXModelDownloader lists, downloads and deletes MLX models in the
Hugging Face cache. A second OpenAICompatibleSuggestionEngine instance talks to the server with
mlx_lm's sampling fields and stops the stream at a sentence end; the router sends .mlx to it with
no fallback to another engine.

CotabbyAppEnvironment owns the MLX services and drives the server from one pure decision
(engine, model, cache cap, toolchain, cached models); AppDelegate starts that work outside the
test host, unloads the llama model while MLX runs, and stops the server on quit. Engine & Model
gets an MLX section (install/remove/retry, catalog, cached and custom models, prompt-cache cap),
and the power-source pickers, Home, the menu bar and the attention badge know MLX. The
Performance pane's CPU and memory include the MLX server while it runs, and the menu bar popover
shows Cotabby's CPU, RAM and GPU use (with the server) while it is open.

P1 Partial models appear downloaded

scanDetailed treats a snapshot as downloaded when it contains any .safetensors file. If a shared-cache download stops between files, the config, tokenizer, and some weight shards can remain without an .incomplete blob. The model is then offered for use and may be selected automatically, but cannot load.

Check the weight index's required shards and their readable targets before publishing a cached model. Keep this completeness check separate from the remote compatibility check.

Fixed in 82bf9fb. A new MLXCacheScanner.isComplete check, kept apart from the compatibility
rule, now requires two things:

  • every snapshot entry resolves to a readable file
  • a sharded model's model.safetensors.index.json finds every shard it names

A download stopped between files is therefore "not downloaded". Pinned by
test_shardedModelNeedsEveryShardTheIndexNames and test_danglingSnapshotLinkIsNotDownloaded.

The MLX files were added with a script whose project file differs from
what xcodegen generates, which fails the XcodeGen drift gate.

Wrap long lines (the MLX warm-up prompt uses string line continuations, so its text is
unchanged), pass the MLX server decision its inputs as one struct, replace two large tuples with
a pipe parameter and a small struct, move the dead-generator handling into its own method, and
use failable UTF-8 decoding. The MLX output collector now splits stderr into lines as bytes, so a
character cut across two pipe reads is decoded whole.

reportBroken cleared the live process and only recorded it as stopping inside a task, so a quit
that ran first found nothing to stop and left Python running with its pid file removed. The
report now sends SIGTERM and records the process as stopping before it schedules the wait.

…complete

mlx_lm.server loads the repo id offline, which huggingface_hub resolves through refs/main, so a
snapshot without it is no longer offered. A snapshot now counts only when every entry reaches a
readable file and a sharded model's index finds every shard, so a download stopped between files
is not offered. An unrelated .incomplete blob elsewhere in the repo no longer hides a complete
snapshot.

A model started from the Other MLX Model field has no catalog row until it is cached, so its
download was invisible apart from a disabled button. MLXModelCatalog.downloadWithoutRow picks out
that download, and the custom field shows its progress, a Cancel button and its error.

A pasted datasets/ or spaces/ link became a wrong id such as datasets/org, and a link copied
without its scheme was rejected. Links whose first segment is one of Hugging Face's own pages are
now refused, and a scheme-less huggingface.co link is read like a full one.

…s branch

No conflicts. The on-demand rewrite server follows the same rules: it reads the downloader's cache
scan (now only a complete refs/main snapshot counts), validates the model id with MLXRepoID (which
now rejects dataset and Space links), and the shared quit path in MLXServerManager.shutdownSync(_:)
already waits on a process that reportBroken has SIGTERMed and recorded as stopping.

- A broken-generator report sends SIGTERM and records the process as stopping
synchronously, so a quit right after it still stops Python (with the shared
  two-server shutdown).
- The cache scan counts only the snapshot refs/main names and requires every
  snapshot entry to be readable and every shard the index names to be present;
an unrelated .incomplete blob no longer hides a complete model.
- A custom model's download shows its progress, Cancel and error under the
  custom field (MLXModelCatalog.downloadWithoutRow).
- Dataset, Space and other non-model Hugging Face links are refused; a
  scheme-less huggingface.co link is accepted.
- mlx-server.log is written only under -cotabby-debug, for both the
autocomplete and the rewrite server; a normal run keeps stderr in memory.
- Accurate wording for why MLX gets no speculative requests (shared generation
thread, not "keeps decoding"), menu observer without the dead signal enum,
and the menu resource monitor docs.
- The strict SwiftLint code fixes: byte-wise stderr line splitting in
MLXOutputCollector (a UTF-8 character split across reads decodes whole),
failable UTF-8 decoding, MLXServerDesireResolver.Input (rewrite controller
updated), the dead-generator branch in its own method, no large tuples.

Tests from upstream for each fix are included.
