Stacked on #869 (selection rewrite) and #868 (MLX engine). This PR is meant to be squash-merged; the first feature commit does not build on its own (the wiring follows in the second).

What to review, in order:

  • "Give Rewrite a provider per engine that reuses autocomplete's model", "Offer every engine in Settings -> Rewrite and wire the providers", "Document Rewrite on every engine": the feature.
  • "Cut the base model's stop text on the endpoint and MLX completions paths", "Check a popup's whole endpoint URL, not only its host", "Wait for Rewrite's MLX server to stop before autocomplete starts MLX", "Keep a model-list error under the service it belongs to; name Engine & Model in the README": follow-ups from the review of this PR.

The three merge commits only bring in the base PRs: "Merge feat/mlx-engine-main (#868) into the rewrite branch (#869)" (README lines from both, the Xcode project regenerated with XcodeGen, stopWhen threaded through the SSE loop #869 shared between generate and streamChat), and the two "… review fixes into the engines branch" merges. The #869 one carries #869's stop-text cut and Longer budget into this branch's per-engine providers: the budget lives in RewritePromptBuilder.tokenBudget and now serves every provider.

Summary

Rewrite runs on any of autocomplete's engines, with the model you already set up. Settings → Rewrite → Rewrite Model now offers:

  • Same as autocomplete (<engine>), the new default: rewrites run on whatever engine autocomplete uses, but never off this Mac. If autocomplete uses an OpenAI-compatible endpoint on another host, the row reads "Same as autocomplete (on this Mac: your endpoint is not local)" and rewrites run on Apple Intelligence, else Open Source.
  • Apple Intelligence, Open Source, Local Endpoint, MLX: each uses the model configured for autocomplete in Engine & Model. There is no separate rewrite model to download or pick.
  • API model: unchanged from Rewrite selected text with AI (tones, local or your own cloud model) #869 (Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, … with your own key).

A row whose engine can't run right now (no Open Source model, MLX not installed, Apple Intelligence off, no endpoint model) stays visible as "MLX (Unavailable)" and can't be picked; the reason for the selected choice is shown under the picker. Instruction-following models (Apple Intelligence, chat models on an endpoint or MLX) rewrite best; base models give basic-quality rewrites, and the row description says so.

How it works

  1. Choice and resolution. RewriteProviderKind is now sameAsAutocomplete, appleIntelligence, openSource, localEndpoint, mlx, api. The pure RewriteProviderResolver maps sameAsAutocomplete to the provider of the current SuggestionEngineKind, given the autocomplete endpoint's host scope and Apple Intelligence availability: an endpoint that is not loopback resolves to Apple Intelligence (else Open Source) instead, so the default never broadens where text goes. A loopback endpoint keeps resolving to Local Endpoint; an unconfigured one too (it sends nothing and shows its reason). RewriteEngine resolves on every rewrite, so changing autocomplete's engine or endpoint changes where the next rewrite runs. RewriteError.unavailable(reason) carries the provider's own reason to the popup.
  2. Providers (one per engine, each reusing autocomplete's configuration):
    • AppleIntelligenceRewriteProvider and OpenSourceRewriteProvider: Rewrite selected text with AI (tones, local or your own cloud model) #869's LocalRewriteProvider, split in two (file renamed LocalRewriteProviders.swift). Same prompts, budget and stop-text cut as Rewrite selected text with AI (tones, local or your own cloud model) #869.
    • LocalEndpointRewriteProvider: autocomplete's openAICompatibleConfiguration and key. Chat mode streams the instruct prompt (streamChat); completions mode sends the base prompt with RewritePromptBuilder.baseStopSequences through a new general stop field on OpenAICompatibleGenerationOptions (the standard OpenAI field, sent only when non-empty; a non-empty MLX stop still wins, so autocomplete's MLX requests are unchanged). The output and every partial are also cut at the first stop sequence, as Rewrite selected text with AI (tones, local or your own cloud model) #869 does for llama, in case a server ignores stop.
    • MLXRewriteProvider: autocomplete's MLX model (suggestionSettings.mlxModelID).
      • When autocomplete is on MLX, the rewrite goes to autocomplete's server and never starts a second one. If that server is loading it waits (the popup shows "Loading MLX model…" until the first token); if it failed or is off, the rewrite fails with the server's reason.
      • Otherwise MLXRewriteServerController starts an on-demand mlx_lm.server on that model (loopback, 512 MiB prompt cache), and stops it after 5 minutes without a rewrite, when Rewrite starts or stops needing MLX, autocomplete moves to or from MLX, or the MLX model changes, and on quit. A stop requested while a rewrite is streaming waits until it finishes, and a later rewrite that wants the server cancels such a deferred stop. stop() returns only once the server is down, and autocomplete's MLX apply chain awaits it before starting its own server on the same model, so the weights are never loaded twice. The controller is a thin policy layer over a second MLXServerManager and reuses MLXServerDesireResolver, so it never launches what the resolver would refuse.
      • Instruct-named models get the chat prompt, base models the completions prompt with stops and the same stop-text cut.
      • A 404 confirmed by /health as a dead generator is reported to whichever server served the request, as the MLX engine does in Add MLX as an autocomplete engine (Cotabby runs mlx_lm.server for you) #868.
  3. MLX server plumbing (minimal). MLXServerManager takes an optional pidFileURL (MLXPaths.rewriteServerPIDFile), so launch-time orphan cleanup covers the rewrite server too. MLXServerManager.shutdownSync(_:) stops several managers inside one deadline (all SIGTERMs first, one shared 3 s wait, pid files removed last), so quitting with both servers up still takes at most ~3 s. Both servers' pids feed the Performance graph and the menu's resource line.
  4. Migration. A stored local (from Rewrite selected text with AI (tones, local or your own cloud model) #869) becomes Apple Intelligence when it's available, Open Source when it's permanently unavailable (FoundationModelAvailabilityState.unavailable gains a permanent flag for "not eligible" / unsupported macOS). While the answer is transient (model still downloading after login), local stays stored and Open Source runs; the environment finishes the migration on the next definitive availability change. A choice the user makes meanwhile is never overwritten. No stored value → Same as autocomplete. A stored mlx on an Intel Mac falls back to Open Source.

Privacy: what leaves the Mac

  • Apple Intelligence, Open Source and MLX (a 127.0.0.1-only server) never send the selection anywhere.
  • "Same as autocomplete" never sends a rewrite off this Mac on its own. With autocomplete on an endpoint on a LAN or public host, it runs on Apple Intelligence or Open Source, and the Settings row and a note under the picker say so ("Autocomplete's endpoint is not on this Mac, so rewrites run on Apple Intelligence here. Choose Local Endpoint to send them to the endpoint."). Text leaves the Mac only when the user explicitly chooses Local Endpoint for such a host, or a cloud service, as in Rewrite selected text with AI (tones, local or your own cloud model) #869.
  • Explicit Local Endpoint on another host is disclosed in both places:
    • the popup: "The selected text is sent to 192.168.1.50, the endpoint set up in Engine & Model.";
    • Settings → Rewrite, under the picker: "Rewrites go to the endpoint set up in Engine & Model: the selected text is sent to <host>."
    • A loopback endpoint (local Ollama, LM Studio) shows neither line.
  • The popup's destination is fixed when it opens. RewriteEngine.destination() resolves the provider once (RewriteDestination: kind, off-device, host, and the full base URL); the disclosure is built from it and every run of that popup (the action, Retry, Shorter, Longer) goes to it. If Settings changed where that provider would send the text in the meantime (another host, port or path), the run sends nothing and asks to reopen the popup.
  • The README privacy line is updated accordingly. Keys are unchanged: the endpoint provider reads autocomplete's Keychain item; cloud services keep their own.

Settings and defaults

  • Default: Same as autocomplete.
  • Settings → Rewrite → Rewrite Model rows as above; "Same as autocomplete" and "API model" are always pickable (the default shows its reason instead of trapping the user on another row). Notes under the picker: the reason the choice can't run, "Uses your MLX model: <id>", the on-device fallback note, and the explicit endpoint's disclosure. The row titles and pickability are the pure RewriteProviderRowPolicy.
  • RewritePreferences gains no new keys; the provider key keeps its name with new raw values.

Not included / follow-ups

  • Conversation memory. The fork's rewrite memory policy (memory allowed per resolved provider, "send memory off this Mac") is left out because Rewrite selected text with AI (tones, local or your own cloud model) #869 has no memory.
  • Per-server MLX log label. Both MLX servers write to the same mlx-server.log (Add MLX as an autocomplete engine (Cotabby runs mlx_lm.server for you) #868 has no per-server label). Each start still writes its header line with pid, model and port.
  • Open Source rewrite keeps the llama model loaded. Choosing Open Source for Rewrite while autocomplete is on another engine loads the GGUF on the first rewrite, and it stays resident until the next engine switch or quit (AppDelegate only stops the llama runtime when the engine changes). An idle unload like the MLX rewrite server's would fix it.
  • MLX starting vs. on-demand. If autocomplete is on MLX and its server is still loading, a rewrite waits up to 150 s for it; it never starts a second server, by design.

Test plan

  • xcodebuild test, 20 rewrite / MLX / client classes (RewriteProviderResolverTests, RewriteProviderRowPolicyTests, RewritePreferencesStoreTests, RewriteEngineTests, PartialRelayTests, LocalEndpointRewriteProviderTests, MLXRewriteProviderTests, MLXRewriteServerControllerTests, APIRewriteProviderTests, RewritePromptBuilderTests, RewriteTokenBudgetTests, OpenAICompatibleAPIClientTests, SelectionRewriteCoordinatorTests, MLXServerManagerTests, FoundationModelAvailabilityServiceTests, ResourceUsageSummaryTests, MLXEngineWiringTests, OpenAICompatibleSuggestionEngineTests, MLXCacheScannerTests, MLXModelsTests): 231 tests, 0 failures.
    • Resolver for all four engines plus pass-through; "Same as autocomplete" on a LAN / public endpoint resolves to Apple Intelligence or Open Source (engine test: nothing reaches the endpoint stub), loopback or unconfigured keeps the endpoint, an explicit Local Endpoint on any host is kept; local migration (available / permanent / transient / later answer / user choice wins), stored api and mlx, mlx on Intel.
    • Local Endpoint request bodies: chat (messages, no stop) vs completions (base prompt, stop, budget, no MLX fields); stop encoding and the MLX-stop-wins rule in the client; stop text a server left in is cut on the endpoint and MLX base paths.
    • MLX provider: autocomplete's ready server reused with no second launch, waits while it loads, fails with its reason when failed or idle, on-demand server otherwise, base vs instruct prompt shape, 404 + /health reports the serving server broken, a healthy 404 or a cancelled probe never restarts.
    • Controller: refuses to launch without mlx-lm / model / a compatible model, small prompt cache, model change restarts, idle stop, in-flight rewrites block the idle stop and a Settings stop, a later start cancels a deferred stop, a deferred stop() returns only once the server is down (or on quit), retry after failure, shutdown blocks later starts. Manager: custom pid file, shared shutdown order (both SIGTERMs before any SIGKILL, pid files removed last).
    • Popup disclosure wording per destination; every run of a popup uses the destination it disclosed; a destination that no longer matches (incl. another port on the same host) sends nothing; a model-list result or error is kept only for the service and URL it was loaded for; Settings row titles (incl. the on-device fallback title) and pickability.
  • Full suite on the branch: 3172 tests, 14 skipped, 1 failure: the known AXTextGeometryResolverTests.test_resolveCaretRect_returnsRealGeometry_forNativeTextField, which fails the same way on main on this Mac.
  • Full suite on the merge commit before any change: 3069 tests, same single known failure.
  • Cotabby and Cotabby Dev schemes build.
  • swiftlint lint --strict prints nothing; xcodegen generate leaves the tree clean.
  • Manual: with autocomplete on MLX, rewrite (no second mlx_lm.server in Activity Monitor); with autocomplete on Apple Intelligence, choose MLX (on-demand server starts, stops after 5 idle minutes); autocomplete on a LAN endpoint with Same as autocomplete (rewrites run on this Mac, the row says so), then with Local Endpoint chosen (popup and Settings name the host); quit with both MLX servers running (both gone within ~3 s).

Summary

Rewrite supports every autocomplete engine and reuses its configured model.

  • Selected text opens a popup for rewriting and reviewing the result.
  • Rewrite uses autocomplete’s model by default and keeps remote endpoints opt-in.
  • Autocomplete can run on an MLX model managed by Cotabby.
  • Engine settings and resource displays show MLX alongside other local runtimes.

MLX is a fourth engine kind (raw value "mlx", Apple Silicon only) that counts as on-device:
typing history, the document tail and the local visual-context limits stay available to it,
while predict-ahead and speculative continuation stay off as for the endpoint. Settings gain the
MLX model id, the prompt-cache cap (1 GiB, clamped to 256 MiB...8 GiB) and the per-power-source
MLX models. The MLX values (paths, repo ids, catalog, states) and the pure rules (cache scan,
model compatibility, toolchain rules, server decision, log filter, generator failure) come with
their tests.

MLXToolchainProvisioner finds a compatible mlx-lm (>= 0.32.0) or installs a pinned mlx-lm 0.32.0
with uv 0.12.18, whose download is SHA-256 checked and whose code signature must name Astral's
team. MLXServerManager launches mlx_lm.server on 127.0.0.1 with HF_HUB_OFFLINE=1, waits for
readiness and a warm-up, restarts it after a crash or a dead generator (confirmed through
/health), stops it on engine change and quit, cleans up an orphan from a crashed launch, and keeps
its stderr in mlx-server.log under -cotabby-debug. MLXModelDownloader lists, downloads and deletes MLX models in the
Hugging Face cache. A second OpenAICompatibleSuggestionEngine instance talks to the server with
mlx_lm's sampling fields and stops the stream at a sentence end; the router sends .mlx to it with
no fallback to another engine.

CotabbyAppEnvironment owns the MLX services and drives the server from one pure decision
(engine, model, cache cap, toolchain, cached models); AppDelegate starts that work outside the
test host, unloads the llama model while MLX runs, and stops the server on quit. Engine & Model
gets an MLX section (install/remove/retry, catalog, cached and custom models, prompt-cache cap),
and the power-source pickers, Home, the menu bar and the attention badge know MLX. The
Performance pane's CPU and memory include the MLX server while it runs, and the menu bar popover
shows Cotabby's CPU, RAM and GPU use (with the server) while it is open.

Focus snapshots now carry the selected text and its range in the host's
value. On top of that, the pure rules decide when a selection may be
rewritten, build instruct and base-model prompts (naming the draft's
language), clean model output, flag numbers and names the user did not
write, and check that Replace still targets the same field, text and
range. RewriteEngine runs one rewrite on Cotabby's local model (Apple
Intelligence, else the llama base model) or on a cloud service with the
user's own key: Claude through Anthropic's Messages API, the others
through OpenAI-compatible chat completions, each key in its own
Keychain item.

While an eligible selection is stable, the field-edge Cotabby icon
becomes a wand and Control-Option-R is armed; the key tap exists only
while such a selection is armed. Either opens a non-activating popup
that takes the keyboard (so Return never reaches a chat app): five
tones, a remembered "Fix spelling & grammar" tick box, a custom
instruction, a streamed preview with Shorter and Longer, Replace, Copy
and Retry. Replace pastes over the original selection only when the
same field still holds the same text at the same range, then reads the
field back; otherwise the rewrite goes to the clipboard with a notice.
A rewrite that adds a number or name the user did not write says what
changed and needs "Replace anyway". The popup names the host when the
provider is a cloud service. Settings -> Rewrite has a master switch
("Rewrite Selected Text", on by default) that turns all selection work
off, the model (this Mac, or a cloud service with a model list and a
Keychain key) and the button.

Wrap long lines (the MLX warm-up prompt uses string line continuations, so its text is
unchanged), pass the MLX server decision its inputs as one struct, replace two large tuples with
a pipe parameter and a small struct, move the dead-generator handling into its own method, and
use failable UTF-8 decoding. The MLX output collector now splits stderr into lines as bytes, so a
character cut across two pipe reads is decoded whole.

README keeps both features' privacy lines; the Xcode project is regenerated with XcodeGen. The

RewriteProviderKind becomes sameAsAutocomplete (the new default), appleIntelligence, openSource,
localEndpoint, mlx and api. The pure RewriteProviderResolver maps the default to the provider of the
current autocomplete engine, but never off this Mac: autocomplete on an endpoint on a LAN or public
host resolves to Apple Intelligence, else Open Source (an explicit Local Endpoint still sends there).
A stored "local" migrates to Apple Intelligence or Open Source only on a definitive Apple
Intelligence answer (FoundationModelAvailabilityState gains a permanent flag).

The local providers reuse autocomplete's model: Apple Intelligence and Open Source are split out of
LocalRewriteProvider; LocalEndpointRewriteProvider uses autocomplete's endpoint (chat mode with the
instruct prompt, completions mode with the base prompt and the new standard `stop` field); and
MLXRewriteProvider uses autocomplete's MLX server when autocomplete is on MLX, otherwise an on-demand
MLXRewriteServerController server (own pid file, shared quit deadline, idle stop that never kills a
rewrite in flight) and reports a dead generator like the MLX engine. Longer's completions budget is
now always above the other actions'. A popup resolves its destination once (RewriteDestination):
the disclosure names that host and every run of the popup goes there, or sends nothing if Settings
moved it meanwhile.

Rewrite Model lists "Same as autocomplete (<engine>)", Apple Intelligence, Open Source, Local
Endpoint, MLX and API model. A row whose provider cannot run stays visible, marked and disabled
(RewriteProviderRowPolicy). "Same as autocomplete" says when it keeps rewrites on this Mac because
autocomplete's endpoint is on another host. The selected choice's reason, the MLX model it uses, and
the host an explicit Local Endpoint on another machine receives are shown under the picker. The environment builds the
per-engine providers and the on-demand MLX rewrite server, finishes the "local" migration on
availability changes, stops that server when the resolved provider, autocomplete's engine or its MLX
model changes, cleans up its orphan at launch, counts it in the resource samplers, and AppDelegate
stops both MLX servers inside one 3 s deadline on quit.

The llama path returned the stop sequence with the rewrite, so a base
model that began its next example left "Draft:" in the preview and in
the field; the output and the streamed partials are now cut at the
earliest stop sequence. Longer gets a token budget that matches what
the cleaner lets it grow to, instead of being cut off mid-sentence.
The base prompt now keeps a refinement's tone and says when the
"Fix spelling & grammar" tick box is off.

Names now match whole words, so "Sam" is flagged even when the draft
says "same". Numbers compare by value: thousands separators are
ignored, but a decimal point and a time's colon are kept, so 3.5 never
equals 35. Refinements are checked against the original selection
rather than the earlier preview, so a change the user never accepted
stays flagged through Shorter and Longer.

mlx_lm.server loads the repo id offline, which huggingface_hub resolves through refs/main, so a
snapshot without it is no longer offered. A snapshot now counts only when every entry reaches a
readable file and a sharded model's index finds every shard, so a download stopped between files
is not offered. An unrelated .incomplete blob elsewhere in the repo no longer hides a complete
snapshot.

A model started from the Other MLX Model field has no catalog row until it is cached, so its
download was invisible apart from a disabled button. MLXModelCatalog.downloadWithoutRow picks out
that download, and the custom field shows its progress, a Cancel button and its error.

A pasted datasets/ or spaces/ link became a wrong id such as datasets/org, and a link copied
without its scheme was rejected. Links whose first segment is one of Hugging Face's own pages are
now refused, and a scheme-less huggingface.co link is read like a full one.

- The app gate now honours the per-domain disable list as well, and is
asked again before the popup opens and before a rewrite runs, so a
pause, Low Power Mode or a disabled domain that comes on while a
  selection stays armed stops it.
- Words are counted at word boundaries, so a Japanese or Chinese
sentence is a draft, not one word.
- While the popup is open and the host has the keyboard, Return is
always taken: it replaces when it may and is swallowed otherwise, so
a chat app never sends the original draft.
- Without a host range (Chromium), the text around the selection must
match too, so another copy of the same phrase is never replaced.
- A paste is confirmed only by the rewrite sitting where the selection
was, not by a shared opening.

- A Claude stream that ends without message_stop is an error rather
than a partial reply that looks finished.
- Settings -> Rewrite forgets a loaded model list when the Custom URL
changes, and ignores a list that arrives for another service or URL.

CotabbyTests/App/Coordinators/Rewrite/SelectionRewriteCoordinatorTests.swift: 1

108-113: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Replace the wall-clock waits with polling on the observed state.

The tests synchronize on fixed sleeps. Examples: send sleeps 5 ms, the actions sleep 10–50 ms, and the verify tests sleep 1.2 s. These sleeps do not wait for the real event: the rewrite result, the paste, the copy fallback, or the verify poll.

  • Under CI load, a step can still be pending when the assertion runs. The test then fails at random.
  • When an assertion expects that something did not happen (output.pasted.isEmpty, copied.isEmpty), the test can pass because the work has not run yet, not because it was suppressed.
  • The 1.2 s waits in test_pasteTheHostIgnoredIsCopied, test_verifySucceedsWithoutCopy and test_verifyMatchesAcrossCollapsedParagraphs also make the suite slow.

Use the existing waitUntil { ... } helper with a bounded timeout for positive conditions. Examples: presenter.popupModel?.phase == .preview(...), !output.pasted.isEmpty, output.copied == [runner.result].

For negative conditions, wait until a positive end state is visible first, then assert the absence. For example, wait until presenter.popupModel == nil. Another option is to inject the verify-poll delay into the coordinator, so the tests do not have to sleep for 1.2 s.

This follows the retrieved learnings: a fixed sleep does not synchronize with the background action, and tests should poll the observed state with a bounded timeout.

406-499: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Move the cross-suite test doubles to CotabbyTests/TestSupport. Some test doubles are defined inside one suite's file but used by several other suites. SOURCE_LAYOUT.md says "shared fixtures remain under CotabbyTests/TestSupport". If a host file is renamed or split, unrelated suites stop compiling.

  • CotabbyTests/Services/Runtime/MLX/MLXServerManagerTests.swift#L406-L499: move SleepGate, MLXFakeProcess, MLXFakeLauncher and MLXFakeProbe into a new CotabbyTests/TestSupport file, for example MLXTestDoubles.swift. MLXEngineWiringTests, MLXRewriteServerControllerTests and MLXRewriteProviderTests use them.
  • CotabbyTests/Services/Runtime/OpenAICompatible/OpenAICompatibleSuggestionEngineTests.swift#L356-L362: move HealthProbeGate into the same TestSupport file, because MLXRewriteProviderTests also uses it.

As per coding guidelines (SOURCE_LAYOUT.md).

… engines branch

FuJacob#869 cut the base model's stop text and gave Longer room to finish in LocalRewriteProvider, which
this branch split into the per-engine providers of LocalRewriteProviders.swift: the cut stays in
OpenSourceRewriteProvider, and the new budget lives in RewritePromptBuilder.tokenBudget, which now
serves every provider (the separate completions budget is gone; Longer already has more room). Its
budget test moves to RewriteTokenBudgetTests. The coordinator keeps both the popup's destination
and FuJacob#869's per-run app check. The Xcode project is regenerated with XcodeGen.

No conflicts. The on-demand rewrite server follows the same rules: it reads the downloader's cache
scan (now only a complete refs/main snapshot counts), validates the model id with MLXRepoID (which
now rejects dataset and Space links), and the shared quit path in MLXServerManager.shutdownSync(_:)
already waits on a process that reportBroken has SIGTERMed and recorded as stopping.

FuJacob#869 cuts the llama path's output at the first base-prompt stop sequence. The Local Endpoint's
completions mode and MLX's base-model path use the same prompt, and a server that ignores `stop`
(or streams part of a stop sequence before it matches) could leave "Draft:" in the preview and the
field. Both now go through one LocalEndpointRewriteProvider.generateBase that cuts every partial
and the result with RewritePromptBuilder.cutAtBaseStop.

A popup resolves its destination once and every run goes there, or sends nothing if Settings moved
it. The check compared only the host and whether the text leaves the Mac, so an endpoint moved to
another port or path on the same host (192.168.1.50:8000 to :9000) passed. RewriteDestination now
also records the provider's full base URL (`endpointURL`, for the Local Endpoint and API providers)
and the engine compares it before sending.

Switching autocomplete to MLX while a rewrite streams on the on-demand rewrite server deferred that
server's stop until the rewrite ended, but autocomplete's server started at once on the same model,
so the weights were loaded twice for a while. MLXRewriteServerController.stop() now returns only
once the server is down (a deferred stop returns when it ran, or early when a new rewrite cancels
it or the app quits), and the environment's MLX apply chain awaits it before applying a running
desire.

…& Model in the README

A failed "Load models" whose request outlived a switch of service or URL showed its error under
the new service; the success path already checked. Both now use RewritePreferences.isModelListSource.
The README called the engine pane "Settings → Engine"; it is "Engine & Model".

P2 Unchanged names trigger warnings

The new whole-word check flags unchanged hyphenated names. Rewriting “send it to Jean-Luc” as “Send it to Jean-Luc.” now reports that the name was added: words(in:) splits the source into jean and luc, while properNames(in:) keeps Jean-Luc together. This shows a false warning and forces users to click Replace anyway instead of using normal Replace or Return.

Use matching word boundaries on both sides while preserving names with internal hyphens.

Fix in Codex Fix in Claude Code

CI (Xcode 26.3, macOS 26 runtime) crashed in RewritePreferencesStoreTests with "pointer being freed
was not allocated", in exactly the eight migration tests that built a store directly instead of
through the retaining makeStore(). Releasing a MainActor-isolated object on that runtime goes
through the back-deployment executor shim, which double-frees in its StopLookupScope (the same bug
SuggestionSettingsModel and the log writers work around). The store gets a nonisolated deinit, the
tests build every store through makeStore() again, the controller tests' StopFlag gets one too,
and a new test deliberately releases 50 stores through the migration path with Apple Intelligence
unavailable.

…b#869, FuJacob#870)

Brings the review and review-bot fixes from feat/selection-rewrite-main and
feat/rewrite-every-engine-main into the fork build, keeping the fork's
memory gathering, named API services, tones and field-icon wand.

- "Rewrite Selected Text" master switch (cotabbyRewriteEnabled, default on):
off arms nothing, so there is no wand and no shortcut key tap.
- "Same as autocomplete" never leaves the Mac on its own: with autocomplete
on a LAN or public endpoint it runs on Apple Intelligence, else Open
Source. An explicit Local Endpoint still sends, with the disclosure.
- A popup resolves its destination once (RewriteDestination); every run
goes there and the memory policy is decided for it; a changed endpoint
  URL sends nothing (destinationChanged).
- Change check moves to RewriteSpecificsCheck: whole-word names, decimals
and times keep their value, always against the user's own selection
  (plus this run's memory facts).
- Arming and every run honour disabled domains, pause and Low Power Mode;
Return never reaches the host while the popup is open; Replace needs the
surrounding text where the host has no range; a paste is confirmed only
when the rewrite is in place.
- Base-model stop text is cut on every path; one token budget, Longer
count*2+100 capped at 800; base prompt keeps a refinement's tone and the
  tick box.
- Anthropic: missing key fails before any request, an unfinished stream is
an error, documented effort/fallback models. Named services need a key.
- Bounded preview height, model-list results and errors stay with their
service, loopback hosts are not disclosed, Esc/Return tap removed for a
  notice, dead presenter surface removed.
- MLX rewrite server: a stop waits for an in-flight rewrite, a later start
cancels a deferred stop, autocomplete's MLX waits for the rewrite server.
- RewritePreferencesStore and TemporaryKeyTap get nonisolated deinit (the
macOS 26 executor-shim double free); tests build stores via makeStore.
- Fixes the fork's memory stripping, which dropped tone and the tick box.
- Colleague names and personal samples replaced in rewrite tests/comments.
