Proposal: #860

Summary

Rewrite with AI. Select text you wrote in a field, pick a tone, and Cotabby rewrites it in place. You don't have to copy the draft into a chat window and paste it back.

  • Trigger. While text is selected in a supported field, the field-edge Cotabby icon turns into a wand. Click it or press ⌃⌥R. The shortcut also works when the button is turned off in Settings.
  • Off switch. Rewrite Selected Text in Settings → Rewrite (on by default) turns the whole feature off: no wand, no ⌃⌥R, no selection work.
  • Popup. Five tones (Family, Friendly, Close friend, Formal, Customer), a Fix spelling & grammar tick box (on by default and remembered), and a field for your own instruction.
  • Preview. The rewrite streams into a preview with Replace, Copy and Retry. Shorter and Longer reshape that preview and keep the tone you chose.
  • Replace in place. Replace puts the rewrite exactly where the selection was. If the field, the text or the range has changed since you opened the popup, the rewrite goes to the clipboard instead, with a notice.
  • Same language. A Turkish or German draft stays Turkish or German.
  • Change warning. If the rewrite contains a number or a name that isn't in your text, the preview says what changed, for example "The number changed: you wrote 1000, the rewrite says 100." Plain Replace and Return are then off, and you have to click Replace anyway.

How it works

  1. Selection in the focus snapshot. FocusedInputSnapshot gains selectedText and hostSelection.

    • selectedText is cut from the same bounded window as precedingText and trailingText (FocusSelectionText).
    • hostSelection is the native kAXSelectedTextRange. It is nil for Chromium contenteditables, whose text-marker ranges are window-relative.
    • Autocomplete is unchanged. A selection still blocks suggestions.
  2. Gate. SelectionRewriteEligibility (pure) accepts a selection only when all of these hold:

    • it has at least two words;
    • the field is not secure;
    • it is not a terminal app or an integrated xterm.js terminal;
    • Cotabby is on for the app: not paused, not off in Low Power Mode, and the app is not disabled.

A selection over 2,000 characters is not rejected silently: it opens the popup with a "too long" message. Credential fields that the resolver blocks are never armed.

  3. Coordinator. SelectionRewriteCoordinator runs the state machine: hidden → button → popup → generating → preview.

    • After a 250 ms stable selection, it lends the field-edge icon to rewrite through ActivationIndicatorController.showRewrite / endRewrite. While rewrite owns the icon, focus-driven show/hide calls leave it alone. Only then does the panel take mouse clicks. Otherwise the panel ignores the mouse, as it does on main.
    • Keys go through a new TemporaryKeyTap, a consuming tap installed only while it is needed.
      • ⌃⌥R: one instance exists only while an eligible selection is armed. It is installed after the 250 ms stable-selection delay and removed as soon as the selection goes away. Even with the button off, any eligible selection arms it, so typing passes through one more event tap while text is selected. It consumes only an exact ⌃⌥R. That means ⌃⌥R can collide with a host app's own shortcut: while a selection is armed, Cotabby takes that key and the host never sees it.
      • Esc and Return: a second instance exists only while the popup is open, and is removed once the popup turns into a notice.
      • Master switch: "Rewrite Selected Text" off turns all of it off. No selection is armed, so there is no wand and no key tap.
    • Every async write checks a run id, so a superseded run, Retry, Esc or the user moving on never touches the popup.
  4. Prompt. RewritePromptBuilder (pure) has two shapes:

    • Instruct, for Apple Intelligence and cloud models: the rules go alone in the system message, and the selection goes in the user message under Draft:. A selection that reads "ignore the above and…" is therefore just a draft to rewrite.
    • Base, for the llama GGUF: one "Draft → Rewritten" example for the action, then the selection, ending at Rewritten:. It stops at the next Draft: through a new LlamaGenerationOptions.stopSequences, checked by the pure DecodeStopPolicy.verdict (new reason stopSequence). The list is empty for autocomplete, and a test pins that an empty list never stops, so autocomplete's stop decision is unchanged.

RewriteLanguageDetector names the draft's language. It is limited to the user's Writing languages, because unconstrained NLLanguageRecognizer guesses can misname a short draft typed without accents. Without a named language, Apple's model can answer a draft that mixes in English words in English.

  5. Engine. RewriteEngine sends the request to the provider chosen in Settings → Rewrite.

    • LocalRewriteProvider (default) uses Apple Intelligence when it is available, with a fresh session per rewrite. Otherwise it uses the selected llama model. It shares LlamaRuntimeManager with autocomplete: the core already serializes generations, and it reuses a cached prefix only when the tokens match.
    • APIRewriteProvider sends Claude through Anthropic's Messages API (AnthropicMessagesClient: raw HTTP and SSE).
      • It sends output_config.effort: "low" on the 5-series models, the documented top-level effort parameter, which needs no beta header.
      • On the models whose classifier refusals it covers (Fable 5.1, Fable 5, Opus 5.5, Opus 5, Sonnet 5.5), it asks for Anthropic's documented server-side refusal fallback (fallbacks: "default" with the server-side-fallback-2026-07-01 beta header). A decline is then retried on Anthropic's recommended model in the same stream. Haiku 5.5 has no server-side fallback, so it is never sent.
      • A refusal that survives is reported as an error.
      • An empty key fails before any request with "Add your … API key in Settings → Rewrite."; this applies to every named service. Only a custom URL may go without a key, for example local Ollama. OpenAI, Gemini, Mistral, Groq, OpenRouter, xAI, DeepSeek and a custom URL go through a new OpenAICompatibleAPIClient.streamChat. That call sends only model, messages and stream, because hosted models differ in which sampling fields they reject. The SSE loop is now shared with autocomplete's generate. That refactor drops a sawEvent = true write in the [DONE] branch, which was dead because the branch returns immediately. Autocomplete behaves exactly as before.
  6. Cleanup and checks.

    • RewriteOutputCleaner strips prefaces ("Here is…:"), code fences and wrapping quotes. It keeps the selection's own leading and trailing whitespace. It rejects output that is empty or too long (more than 3× the selection; Shorter may not grow).
    • RewriteSpecificsCheck and RewriteChangeWarning find and describe added numbers and names.
    • Before pasting, SelectionReplaceValidator checks that the field, the text and the range are the same. If focus came back from the instruction box with only a caret, it restores the original range once through AXHelper.setSelectedTextRange.
    • The paste goes through SuggestionInserter.pasteAtCaret: a paste, never typed keys, so a line break can't send a chat message. Afterwards the coordinator polls the field to confirm the text landed, and copies the rewrite if it didn't.

Privacy: what is sent where

  • Default: nothing leaves the Mac. The default provider is local: Apple Intelligence, or the Open Source model.
  • Cloud only when you choose it. The selected text goes to a cloud service only if you pick one in Settings → Rewrite and enter your own key. Only the selection and the tone or instruction are sent. The rest of the field, the screen, the clipboard and other apps never are.
  • Disclosure. Settings and the popup both name the host ("The selected text is sent to api.anthropic.com."). For a loopback custom URL, such as local Ollama, neither shows the line, because the text stays on the Mac.
  • Keys. Each service's key is its own Keychain item (<bundle id>.rewrite-endpoint.<service>). It is separate from autocomplete's endpoint key and is never stored in UserDefaults.
  • Nothing stored. Nothing about a rewrite is persisted.

Settings and defaults

A new Settings → Rewrite pane, with its own RewritePreferencesStore (UserDefaults keys cotabbyRewrite*):

  • Rewrite Selected Text: the master switch, on by default.
  • Rewrite Model: Local (default) or API model.
    • With API model: the service (Claude by default), a base URL for Custom, and a model field.
    • Choose offers suggested models; Load models fills the list from the service.
    • The API key field saves to the Keychain 600 ms after typing stops, or when you leave the pane.
  • Show Button on Selection: on by default. Changing it applies to the next selection. A wand that is already showing stays until that selection changes.

The tick box state is remembered from the popup. The pane labels the local option "Apple Intelligence" or "Cotabby's model — basic quality", depending on live availability.

Quality note

Base models (Open Source) give basic rewrites: typo fixes are fine, but tone changes are weak. A base model continues text rather than following instructions, so it only gets one example per tone. Apple Intelligence and chat/instruct cloud models rewrite well.

Not included / follow-ups

  • Conversation memory in rewrites. My fork can also use the Memory module (Proposal: an optional on-device Memory & Answers module (local RAG) #850) in rewrites: facts from the same conversation, and your own earlier messages as style, with a separate opt-in before memory goes to a cloud model. This PR ships without it and has no memory hooks. That part follows if Proposal: an optional on-device Memory & Answers module (local RAG) #850 is accepted.
  • Every engine as a rewrite provider. On the fork, the local provider can also be "same as autocomplete" (MLX, the configured endpoint). That depends on the MLX engine PR and comes as its own follow-up.
  • TemporaryKeyTap, pasteAtCaret and stopSequences. These are small shared helpers that my answers feature on the fork also uses. They are added here in a neutral form so this PR stands alone.
  • No language-model eval numbers. This adds a separate generation path and does not change autocomplete's prompt, budgets or sampling, so the eval and recall suites are unaffected.

Test plan

  • Cotabby scheme builds (CODE_SIGNING_ALLOWED=NO)
  • Cotabby Dev scheme builds
  • Rewrite and related classes: 152 tests, 0 failures. swiftlint --strict is clean, and xcodegen generate leaves the tree clean.
    • New: SelectionRewriteCoordinatorTests (incl. master switch off and turned off while armed), RewriteEngineTests, PartialRelayTests, APIRewriteProviderTests (request shape, key, system/user split, missing key fails before the request, keyless custom URL), AnthropicMessagesClientTests (incl. empty key, Haiku without fallback), RewritePreferencesStoreTests, RewritePromptBuilderTests, RewriteOutputCleanerTests, SelectionReplaceValidatorTests, SelectionRewriteEligibilityTests, RewriteLanguageDetectorTests, RewriteChangeWarningTests, RewriteSpecificsCheckTests, FocusSelectionTextTests, and ActivationIndicatorRewriteTests (the plain icon stays click-through; only the wand takes clicks; focus updates leave the wand alone).
    • Extended: OpenAICompatibleAPIClientTests (streamChat) and DecodeStopPolicyTests (an empty stop list never stops; verdict stops at a stop sequence even with the sentence stop off).
    • Unchanged, also run: SettingsIndexTests.
  • Full suite: 2,902 tests, 14 skipped, 1 failure: the known AXTextGeometryResolverTests.test_resolveCaretRect_returnsRealGeometry_forNativeTextField ("Caret rect should not be empty"), which fails the same way on plain origin/main on this Mac
  • Manual: select a draft in TextEdit, a Chrome field and a chat app → wand → tone → Replace. The field shows exactly the preview.
  • Manual: rewrite, then change the selection, then Replace. The rewrite is on the clipboard and the field is untouched.
  • Manual: Settings → Rewrite → Claude with a key → Load models → rewrite. The disclosure names api.anthropic.com.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Rewrite selected text with a chosen tone, typo fixes, or custom instructions. Preview results before replacing text, or copy them instead.
    • Start rewriting with ⌃⌥R or the wand shown beside eligible selections. Replacements are checked for changed names or numbers, with an option to replace anyway.
    • Choose local rewriting by default or configure a cloud service in Settings → Rewrite. Cloud use is disclosed, and API keys are stored securely.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved replacement safeguards to avoid applying a rewrite to a changed selection; text is copied when it can’t be safely inserted.

Summary

Adds selected-text rewriting through local models or a user-configured API service.

  • Selected text opens Cotabby’s rewrite popup from a wand or shortcut.
  • A rewrite preview streams text and offers tone, retry, and length controls.
  • Rewrite settings choose local models or a cloud service with its own key.
  • Cotabby checks changed details and the live selection before replacing text.

One new non-blocking issue remains: unchanged names containing punctuation trigger false warnings.

senadaruc accepted leaving an already-visible wand until the next focus change after power-saving settings change, to keep the stacked #870 diff small. Opening or running a rewrite now checks those settings again.

Focus snapshots now carry the selected text and its range in the host's
value. On top of that, the pure rules decide when a selection may be
rewritten, build instruct and base-model prompts (naming the draft's
language), clean model output, flag numbers and names the user did not
write, and check that Replace still targets the same field, text and
range. RewriteEngine runs one rewrite on Cotabby's local model (Apple
Intelligence, else the llama base model) or on a cloud service with the
user's own key: Claude through Anthropic's Messages API, the others
through OpenAI-compatible chat completions, each key in its own
Keychain item.

While an eligible selection is stable, the field-edge Cotabby icon
becomes a wand and Control-Option-R is armed; the key tap exists only
while such a selection is armed. Either opens a non-activating popup
that takes the keyboard (so Return never reaches a chat app): five
tones, a remembered "Fix spelling & grammar" tick box, a custom
instruction, a streamed preview with Shorter and Longer, Replace, Copy
and Retry. Replace pastes over the original selection only when the
same field still holds the same text at the same range, then reads the
field back; otherwise the rewrite goes to the clipboard with a notice.
A rewrite that adds a number or name the user did not write says what
changed and needs "Replace anyway". The popup names the host when the
provider is a cloud service. Settings -> Rewrite has a master switch
("Rewrite Selected Text", on by default) that turns all selection work
off, the model (this Mac, or a cloud service with a model list and a
Keychain key) and the button.

Do not add one-file Rewrite/ folders.

This PR adds two new folders that each hold one file:

  • Cotabby/App/Coordinators/Rewrite/ holds only SelectionRewriteCoordinator.swift.
  • Cotabby/Models/Rewrite/ holds only RewriteModels.swift.

The layout rule says a child folder needs at least two files with a stable responsibility. Do one of the following:

  • Put SelectionRewriteCoordinator.swift directly in App/Coordinators/, next to SettingsCoordinator.swift. Keep RewriteModels.swift in the nearest existing subsystem.
  • Explain in this document why each folder will grow soon.

If you move a file, regenerate Cotabby.xcodeproj and move its mirrored test (CotabbyTests/App/Coordinators/Rewrite/) with it.

As per coding guidelines: "Add a child folder only when at least two files form a stable responsibility with a predictable name. Do not create one-file folders merely to shorten a file list."

P1 The wrong phrase gets replaced

SelectionReplaceValidator accepts matching text without checking its position when hostSelection is nil. Chromium contenteditables take this path. If the user selects another occurrence of the same phrase while the popup is open, SelectionRewriteTarget also stays equal. The popup remains open, and Replace overwrites the new occurrence.

Preserve enough information to check the original selection, or copy instead when its position cannot be checked.

Valid. With no host range (Chromium), another copy of the same phrase passed both the target equality and the validator.

Fixed: 20390439: SelectionRewriteTarget now keeps 32 characters of text on each side of the selection. Without a host range on either side, the validator requires those to match, and a different copy also makes a new target, so the popup closes. Test: test_withoutAHostRangeTheSurroundingTextDecides.

P1 Changed numbers pass unnoticed

numbers(in:) removes decimal points and time separators before comparing values. A draft saying 3.5 and a rewrite saying 35 both become 35, so a tenfold change passes without a warning. Likewise, 1:30 and 13:0 compare equal.

Keep separators that affect the value. Only remove separators that are known to mark thousands.

Valid. Stripping every separator made 3.5 equal 35, and 1:30 equal 13:0.

Fixed: c4899bbc: only real thousands groups lose their separators. A decimal comma becomes a point, and a colon stays. The warning now treats any term starting with a digit as a number. Tests: test_decimalsAndTimesKeepTheirValue, test_thousandsSeparatorsDoNotMatter, test_changedDecimalIsNamedAsANumber.

P2 Ignored pastes look successful

verifyInserted considers a paste successful if the rewrite's first 30 characters occur anywhere in the current field, including the original selection. A failed paste of Please send the quarterly report today. over Please send the quarterly report tomorrow. passes because the shared opening is already there. Cotabby then closes the popup without copying the rewrite or showing the promised notice.

Check the expected replacement at the original location rather than an arbitrary matching prefix.

Valid. Finding the first 30 characters anywhere in the field confirmed a paste that had not landed.

Fixed: 20390439: a pure pasteLanded(_:replacing:in:), which ignores whitespace on both sides, confirms a paste in one of two ways. Either the text before the caret ends with the rewrite (its last 1,000 characters for a long one), or the whole rewrite is in the field and the original selection is gone. Test: test_pasteLandedNeedsTheRewriteInPlace (the "today/tomorrow" case, run-together paragraphs, caret moved).

The llama path returned the stop sequence with the rewrite, so a base
model that began its next example left "Draft:" in the preview and in
the field; the output and the streamed partials are now cut at the
earliest stop sequence. Longer gets a token budget that matches what
the cleaner lets it grow to, instead of being cut off mid-sentence.
The base prompt now keeps a refinement's tone and says when the
"Fix spelling & grammar" tick box is off.

Names now match whole words, so "Sam" is flagged even when the draft
says "same". Numbers compare by value: thousands separators are
ignored, but a decimal point and a time's colon are kept, so 3.5 never
equals 35. Refinements are checked against the original selection
rather than the earlier preview, so a change the user never accepted
stays flagged through Shorter and Longer.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01BWE41JyPDYvSWqdCX5EM69
- The app gate now honours the per-domain disable list as well, and is
asked again before the popup opens and before a rewrite runs, so a
pause, Low Power Mode or a disabled domain that comes on while a
  selection stays armed stops it.
- Words are counted at word boundaries, so a Japanese or Chinese
sentence is a draft, not one word.
- While the popup is open and the host has the keyboard, Return is
always taken: it replaces when it may and is swallowed otherwise, so
a chat app never sends the original draft.
- Without a host range (Chromium), the text around the selection must
match too, so another copy of the same phrase is never replaced.
- A paste is confirmed only by the rewrite sitting where the selection
was, not by a shared opening.

…del list

- A preview taller than about 18 lines scrolls inside a fixed height,
so Replace, Copy and Retry stay on screen.
- A Claude stream that ends without message_stop is an error rather
than a partial reply that looks finished.
- Settings -> Rewrite forgets a loaded model list when the Custom URL
changes, and ignores a list that arrives for another service or URL.

Require the selection to collapse before accepting a field-wide match.

When the paste is ignored but the selection remains, a pre-existing rewrite at the end of precedingText can satisfy the suffix check. The field-wide check also treats a rewrite containing the original as evidence that the original is gone. verifyInserted then returns without copying the rewrite.

Ignore obsolete model-load failures.

loadModels() has one caller: the Load models button. Changing service or base URL does not re-enable that button, so the direct premature-reset race is not reachable in the same pane instance.

The settings container can recreate RewritePaneView when navigation leaves and returns to the Rewrite pane. The new view can start another request while the old unstructured task is still pending, but the old task does not establish a reset of the new view’s @State loading flag. The supported issue is that the old task can still display an obsolete failure after the service or URL changes.

Track request identity for completion status. Do not require the loading reset guard for the current button flow.

P2 Unchanged names trigger warnings

Rewriting “Please ask Jean-Luc tomorrow” without changing the name still flags Jean-Luc. words(in:) splits the source into jean and luc, but properNames(in:) keeps Jean-Luc whole. This disables plain Replace and Return even though the user already wrote the name.

Use matching word boundaries on both sides while preserving the whole-word check.

… engines branch

FuJacob#869 cut the base model's stop text and gave Longer room to finish in LocalRewriteProvider, which
this branch split into the per-engine providers of LocalRewriteProviders.swift: the cut stays in
OpenSourceRewriteProvider, and the new budget lives in RewritePromptBuilder.tokenBudget, which now
serves every provider (the separate completions budget is gone; Longer already has more room). Its
budget test moves to RewriteTokenBudgetTests. The coordinator keeps both the popup's destination
and FuJacob#869's per-run app check. The Xcode project is regenerated with XcodeGen.

FuJacob#869 cuts the llama path's output at the first base-prompt stop sequence. The Local Endpoint's
completions mode and MLX's base-model path use the same prompt, and a server that ignores `stop`
(or streams part of a stop sequence before it matches) could leave "Draft:" in the preview and the
field. Both now go through one LocalEndpointRewriteProvider.generateBase that cuts every partial
and the result with RewritePromptBuilder.cutAtBaseStop.

Brings the review and review-bot fixes from feat/selection-rewrite-main and

memory gathering, named API services, tones and field-icon wand.

- "Rewrite Selected Text" master switch (cotabbyRewriteEnabled, default on):

- "Same as autocomplete" never leaves the Mac on its own: with autocomplete

- A popup resolves its destination once (RewriteDestination); every run
goes there and the memory policy is decided for it; a changed endpoint
  URL sends nothing (destinationChanged).
- Change check moves to RewriteSpecificsCheck: whole-word names, decimals
and times keep their value, always against the user's own selection
  (plus this run's memory facts).
- Arming and every run honour disabled domains, pause and Low Power Mode;
Return never reaches the host while the popup is open; Replace needs the
surrounding text where the host has no range; a paste is confirmed only
when the rewrite is in place.
- Base-model stop text is cut on every path; one token budget, Longer
count*2+100 capped at 800; base prompt keeps a refinement's tone and the
  tick box.
- Anthropic: missing key fails before any request, an unfinished stream is
an error, documented effort/fallback models. Named services need a key.
- Bounded preview height, model-list results and errors stay with their
service, loopback hosts are not disclosed, Esc/Return tap removed for a
  notice, dead presenter surface removed.
- MLX rewrite server: a stop waits for an in-flight rewrite, a later start
cancels a deferred stop, autocomplete's MLX waits for the rewrite server.
- RewritePreferencesStore and TemporaryKeyTap get nonisolated deinit (the
macOS 26 executor-shim double free); tests build stores via makeStore.
- Fixes the fork's memory stripping, which dropped tone and the tick box.
- Colleague names and personal samples replaced in rewrite tests/comments.
