Conversation
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThis change adds a Rust crate for authenticated device-to-device links and mDNS discovery. It integrates peer serving, dialing, and revocation-list exchange into client enrolment. It also adds peer events, Android multicast-lock handling, and tests. ChangesDevice peer links

- Line 17: Keep the Cargo.lock change out while any Cargo.toml contains an
unpinned git dependency; otherwise, pin each such dependency with a rev or tag
before retaining the lockfile change. The shown workspace entry for
crates/connetto-peer does not itself identify a git dependency, so locate the
unpinned dependency in the manifest files before changing it.
Review comments at @crates/connetto-client/src/enrolment/task.rs:
- Around line 397-413: Update Task::link_peer to account for the clock_off latch
when Standing::of_leaf returns Expired: if the task is already in ClockOff,
return PeerError::ClockOutsideWindow without queuing CertificateExpired;
otherwise preserve the existing expired-certificate behavior. Reuse the latch
maintained by Run::clock_outside and Run::standing, making it available to
link_peer if necessary.
Review comments at @crates/connetto-client/tests/it/enrolment.rs:
- Around line 1872-1882: In the enrolment test, replace the `try_recv` busy loop
with an awaited `next_event` call using the same three-second timeout and
`PeerLinked` predicate; assert that the result is `None` to preserve the
expectation that b does not link c.
Review comments at @crates/connetto-peer/src/node.rs:
- Around line 632-643: Update map_frame so non-rustls FrameError::Io errors
become LinkError::Unreachable while preserving map_rustls for rustls errors. In
exchange_hello, map Ok(None) from read_frame to LinkError::Unreachable with an
UnexpectedEof error instead of Protocol.
- Around line 646-672: Update accept_loop to cap concurrent inbound handshakes
with a bounded semaphore, holding each permit until inbound completes and
dropping newly accepted sockets when no permit is available; define the limit
alongside the existing bounds. Add a short delay after listener.accept errors so
persistent failures do not cause a busy loop.
Review comments at @crates/connetto-peer/src/policy.rs:
- Around line 290-306: Update the due-instance collection in the policy
scheduling flow to sort by each entry’s seq before taking capacity, so queued
dials start oldest first regardless of fingerprint ordering.
- Around line 184-189: Keep running dials counted until dial_result handles
their outcome: in removed, add a removed entry’s fingerprint to orphaned when
entry.dialing is true; remove the dialing resets from linked, unlinked, and
addresses_changed so these transitions cannot release the slot early.

Linked.
ServiceResolvedaccepts the advertised fingerprint and resolved address independently. A publisher can advertise peer A's fingerprint at trusted device B's address.node.link(address)then authenticates and registers B, whileOk(_) => truereports A asLinked. Policy stops retrying A, so a later legitimate address for A does not start autolink.A mismatch must skip that address, continue checking the remaining addresses, and fall through to the existing non-barring
Unreachableresult when none matches. ReturningUnreachableimmediately is not sufficient because it leaves the mismatched address in the instance's address set and can skip a legitimate address on every retry.Suggested fix

This is the third slice of R76. Devices on one network now find each other with no address typed in. While a device serves, it advertises itself over mDNS under a random name. The record carries only the frame version and a hash of its current certificate, so nothing in it names an account, and both change at every renewal. The device also browses for other devices and reports each as
PeerFoundandPeerGone. Unless the app turns autolink off, the client dials what it finds. An unreachable peer is retried from 5 seconds up to 5 minutes. A refused, revoked or expired peer is never dialled again until it advertises a renewed certificate. Since anyone on the network can advertise, at most 8 dials run at once and at most 256 found devices are tracked. Android holds a multicast lock while it browses, and the demo declares the permission for it.The plan records the three decisions behind this, each with its rows in a new discovery table. A device that joins a hotspot will dial the host on the port the join hands over, which arrives with the hotspot slice. The client dials what it finds unless the app turns that off. Discovery is bounded against a hostile network. The proofs run two nodes and two clients on loopback multicast. CI now requires loopback multicast, so a runner without it fails these proofs instead of skipping them. The branch sits on #135.
Peer discovery and device-to-device linking were missing, so clients could not find nearby devices or establish links automatically. The new peer system advertises certificate fingerprints over mDNS, reports peers as they appear or disappear, and supports optional automatic linking.
Discovery bounds concurrent dials and tracked peers. It retries unreachable peers with backoff, and waits for a renewed certificate before retrying peers refused for trust or certificate reasons. Android acquires a multicast lock while browsing. CI requires loopback multicast for discovery proofs.
