fix(create): bound optional package-manager version probes - #553
A stalled package-manager shim can block optional version detection and delay cancellation. This bounds the lookup and cleans up its owned process tree before returning the existing unknown-version fallback.
AI review notes:
Refreshed against current main, preserving its cancellation contract. Timeout and abort share one cleanup task. POSIX uses an owned process group; Windows uses taskkill /T /F with a five-second cleanup bound. The optional lookup deadline remains 15 seconds, inherited output pipes are closed, and an already-aborted lookup never spawns a child.
Five real subprocess cases cover trimmed output/target cwd, a stalled shim, a descendant retaining pipes, cancellation with a descendant, and cancellation before launch. A naive merge that only passed cancelSignal into Execa failed the new cancellation case, waiting about 14.7 seconds after abort. The corrected case passes the seven-second cancellation bound and verifies that the descendant is gone.
Current normal hooks passed all 10 builds, lint, 574 unit tests and all 22 blocking browser cases. CLI dist JavaScript is unchanged; create dist is +2,566 raw bytes and +598 gzip bytes against current main, within applicable budgets. These are artifact figures, not a new startup or memory benchmark.
The focused Windows job uses the existing pinned setup action and preserves the required jobs. Fresh hosted Windows validation and TanStack Core codeowner review remain required for the refreshed head.

Bug Fixes
Package-manager version checks now stop after a reasonable time instead of waiting indefinitely, helping project creation continue when a package manager stalls.
If a version check is canceled, it is stopped cleanly. When a version can’t be detected, the existing unknown-version fallback remains available.
Package-manager version checks now return undefined after a 15-second timeout, on cancellation, or on execution errors. Timeout and cancellation trigger platform-specific process termination. Tests cover successful output, working directory, cancellation, and stalled-process cleanup. Windows CI runs the probe tests.

Summary
Version probe timeout and validation packages/create/src/environment.ts, packages/create/tests/environment-version-probe.test.ts, .github/workflows/pr.yml, .changeset/bounded-version-probe.md
The version check now handles a 15-second timeout and abort cancellation. It attempts to terminate the process tree, with a fallback to killing the probe process. Tests cover output trimming, working directory, timeout, cancellation, and cleanup. Windows CI builds @tanstack/create and runs the tests. The changeset declares a patch release. The memory environment change is formatting only.
Optional package-manager version checks are now bounded. Two narrow edge cases remain: a stalled probe can be left running if the CLI exits mid-probe, and in theory an unrelated process group could be signalled. Both are low-likelihood and worth addressing as follow-ups.

Refreshed this against current main and kept cancellation intact.
AI review notes:
At f828b575, timeout and abort share the same owned-tree cleanup. A real negative control showed that simply forwarding the new cancel signal delayed abort until the 15-second timeout; the new cancellation case now passes and checks that the descendant is gone. A second case confirms that an already-cancelled lookup never starts a subprocess.
Normal hooks passed 10 builds, lint, 574 units and all 22 browser cases. CLI gzip is unchanged and create is +598 bytes against current main, within budgets. Fresh Windows CI and the existing Core codeowner review are still required.

Assert that cancellation prevents the execa call.
If the early return is removed, cleanup can kill the shim before it writes probe.pid. The test can then pass even though it launched a probe. Use an execa spy or mock to assert that the package-manager probe was not called.

On POSIX, if the CLI exits during a probe, Execa does not clean up the detached process. The timer also stops with the CLI, so a stalled shim and its descendants can remain running.
Add parent-exit cleanup for the probe group. Preserve the existing timeout and cancellation cleanup.

If the shim exits and an escaped descendant retains its pipes, the probe can remain pending after the original group disappears. If the group ID is reused before timeout or cancellation, stop() can kill an unrelated group.
Preserve cleanup of descendants that remain in the original group; a shared exit guard would skip them after the shim exits.

A stalled package-manager shim can block optional version detection and delay cancellation. This bounds the lookup and cleans up its owned process tree before returning the existing unknown-version fallback.
