fix(virtual-core): render Solid lists after template insertion - #1360
Solid lists inside <Suspense>, or using a signal set in ref outside Suspense, can stay empty after insertion. Core first adopts the scroll element in a template document without a window, so the built-in observers do not attach. After insertion it sees the same element and skips reattaching them.
_willUpdate now reattaches observers when the element's window changes too. Custom observers still receive windowless elements; window scroll elements and elements that stay in a document with a window are unchanged.
Still empty after this change: a virtualizer created outside <Suspense> whose scroll element is inside it, with a plain or signal ref. Nothing calls _willUpdate after Suspense inserts the element, so the observers never reattach. That needs a change in the Solid adapter and is left for a follow-up.
Two tests cover the fix and fail without it. virtual-core/tests/dom-observers.test.ts inserts a template-cloned scroll element with the built-in observers and expects 13 items afterwards (0 without the fix). solid-virtual/tests/suspense.test.tsx renders the #1011 shape, a virtualizer inside a component suspended on a resource, and expects rows 0 to 3 once it resolves (no rows without the fix).
Core and Solid test:lib, test:eslint, test:types, build and test:build pass. The React, Angular and Marko e2e suites pass on the core change with Chromium 1228 instead of the pinned 1194.
I have tested this code locally with pnpm run test:pr.
Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Virtualized lists now render correctly when their scroll element is added to the document after the list is created. This also fixes lists inside suspended views and lists that use a signal ref, which could otherwise remain blank. Observers reconnect when the scroll element’s owning window changes.
Solid clones nodes from a <template>, and a suspended <Suspense> keeps them
in the template's document until it resolves. _willUpdate adopted such an
element with targetWindow null, so no observers were attached and the
viewport stayed 0; the call after insertion saw the same element and
returned early, leaving the list empty. Treat an element whose document has
no window like a missing one, so it is adopted once it is inserted.
The new dom-observers test fails without the change.
Keep handing windowless elements to custom observers, and re-adopt the same element when its document gains a window. This preserves late signal refs with custom observers while fixing Solid Suspense and synchronous signal refs with the built-in observers.
Use built-in observers in the template insertion regression test so the base fails on the missing rows rather than on an observer call count.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The virtualizer now reattaches observers when an unchanged scroll element gains a different owning window. Tests verify that items render after document insertion and after a Suspense resource resolves.

TanStack/virtual#1350: Both changes address Solid lifecycle timing around delayed DOM availability. #1350 invokes _willUpdate() through onSettled; this PR changes core observer reattachment when an element gains a window.

Explanation
Directly linked issue #1011 requires that an async Solid virtualized list render its rows after Suspense resolves. Whole-PR diff (merge base 0a368c7 to head 53e757c) changes Virtualizer._willUpdate in packages/virtual-core/src/index.ts. The condition now also reattaches observers when the scroll element has an ownerDocument whose defaultView differs from this.targetWindow. Solid creates the element in a template document with no window, then inserts the same element into a document with a window. The second call attaches the built-in observers. Window scroll elements have no ownerDocument and are unchanged. Test coverage at head: (a) packages/virtual-core/tests/dom-observers.test.ts adds a template-clone test. It expects 0 items before insertion and 13 after. (b) packages/solid-virtual/tests/suspense.test.tsx is new at head. It renders a virtualizer inside a component suspended on a createResource, and expects rows 0 to 3 after resolution. This matches the shape described in #1011 (virtualizer inside the suspended component). Neither test was executed in this review. Their pass or fail state relies on the PR description. Residual gap, disclosed by the PR and not in scope for this PR: a virtualizer created outside Suspense whose scroll element is inside it still receives no reattachment, because no _willUpdate call follows Suspense insertion. The #1011 codesandbox is not accessible, so it is not confirmed whether the reported reproduction uses that shape. The issue has no non-coding requirements.

(2) packages/virtual-core/tests/dom-observers.test.ts adds one regression test for the template-insertion case. This tests the same fix. (3) packages/solid-virtual/tests/suspense.test.tsx is a new Solid test for the #1011 shape. It tests the same fix at the adapter level. Reattach Solid observers after a windowless scroll element is inserted.
1082-1087: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Reattach Solid observers after a windowless scroll element is inserted.
When createVirtualizer runs outside a <Suspense> boundary and the scroll element sits inside it, _willUpdate can run while the element has no window. The onMount call has already run by then, and insertion does not trigger another update. The new reattach branch never runs, so the list stays empty. Trigger a _willUpdate after insertion, or attach the observers from the insertion path.

Ensure the Solid integration reruns `_willUpdate` or reattaches its observers
when a windowless scroll element is inserted after `onMount`, so the virtual
list initializes without another unrelated update. Locate the reattachment
condition using `this.scrollElement` and `this.targetWindow`; preserve its
existing behavior for scroll elements that already have a window.
Add Solid adapter coverage for a scroll element that is set after mount.
Add Solid adapter coverage for a scroll element that is set after mount.
The new core test calls _willUpdate() by hand after appendChild, so it does not run the Solid adapter. In packages/solid-virtual/src/index.tsx, the adapter calls _willUpdate() in onMount, in the createComputed body, and in onChange. A scroll element that becomes available later through a signal ref reaches the virtualizer only through these calls. The existing Solid test uses getScrollElement: () => null and asserts only sizes. No Solid test checks rendered rows for a deferred scroll element, Suspense, or a signal ref, so a regression in these calls can go unnoticed by the Solid suite.
Add a test in packages/solid-virtual/tests/index.test.ts. Make getScrollElement read a signal, set that signal to an element after the virtualizer is created, and assert the rendered item count.

Review comment at @packages/virtual-core/tests/dom-observers.test.ts around
lines 277 - 280:
Add a Solid adapter test alongside the existing cases in the test suite, using a
signal-backed getScrollElement that initially returns no element and is updated
to an element after virtualizer creation. Assert the rendered item count after
the signal update to verify deferred scroll-element handling through the Solid
adapter.
Thanks @clean99, nice small fix. Checked it locally: the core test fails on main and passes here, and I ran a few Solid probes. The repro from #1011 (virtualizer inside the suspended component) and the signal ref without Suspense both render rows now 🚀
One case is still empty though, the one CodeRabbit flagged in its review body: virtualizer created outside <Suspense>, scroll element inside it (signal or plain ref). Nothing calls _willUpdate after Suspense inserts the element, so the observers never reattach. Probably needs a fix in the Solid adapter, fine as a follow-up imho, but could you mention it in the description? Also, the description says Solid checks cover Suspense and signal refs, but there are no Solid tests in the diff. Could you add one for the #1011 shape in packages/solid-virtual/tests?
Cover the TanStack#1011 shape through the Solid adapter: the virtualizer is
created inside a component that suspends on a resource, and its rows
render once the boundary resolves. Without the virtual-core change the
list stays empty.
Thanks for running the probes. I added packages/solid-virtual/tests/suspense.test.tsx for the #1011 shape, which fails without the core change, and the test paragraph in the description now covers only those two tests. The outside-<Suspense> case is now in the description as a follow-up for the Solid adapter.
